Rosie couldn't contain her excitement as her Uber approached Ben's place. She decided to see him first, ditch her stuff at his apartment, and surprise the rest of the family at the basketball game. She grinned as she saw his beat-up car parked out front, his "new" car that she saw pictures of and heard countless stories about over the past few months. Just like Dad.

She gently rapped on the door to his loft, silently hoping she wasn't disturbing anything inside. She and Becca had FaceTimed and texted, and Rosie probably knew more about the relationship than Ben at this point. Girl talk was always full of details.

"It's open, Ro!"

Rosie turned the handle and entered the loft with a look of surprise of her own. "How did you…?"

Ben met her with a grin and a huge hug. "I'm almost a cop, remember?"

Rosie returned the hug gratefully but wasn't pleased with his vague answer. "Spill it."

Ben laughed. "The next time you want to surprise me, you need to remove my account from the Southwest app."

Rosie giggled. "Dammit. I thought I was being so sneaky. Does anyone else know?"

"Nope- I kept it to myself. I knew you wanted to surprise everyone, but it's not safe, Ro. You need to at least let one of us in on your secrets, just in case."

"Ugh. Does this family always have to be so careful? Don't answer that." She shook her head and smirked at her rhetorical question. Looking around the loft, she noticed the quiet. "No Becca today?"

"She's coming to the game. I figured we could have some time to catch up for a bit. She's dying to meet you in person."

"Same. She's a keeper, Benji. She reminds me of Mom." Ben groaned, and Rosie laughed. "You know what I mean- she's smart and beautiful."

"I know. I just don't want to make this Oedipal, if you don't mind."

They both chuckled. Ben reached into the fridge and grabbed her favorite iced coffee from the shop around the corner. "I figured you'd miss this."

"You rock! Thanks." They sat at his counter, sipping coffees and catching up on life face-to-face.

"Speaking of Mom…"

"And Dad…"

Rosie sighed. "They aren't going to retire."

"You caught onto that, huh?"

"What is it about the job? It's just a job!"

Ben sat quietly at first, taking in his sister's worry. He almost felt guilty adding himself into a career that filled Rosie with dread. "It's more than a job, and you know it. They have poured themselves into it, heart and soul."

"I know. I'm so proud of Mom and Dad and what they've accomplished. But they have paid their dues. They don't need to do this anymore." Rosie finally blurted out the secret she had held from her brother for the last five years. "Dad's working in Vice."

"I know." Rosie's eyes widened, but she stopped short of shock. Of course, he knew. "He told me right before I started the Academy. Even though his involvement is very hush-hush, he didn't want me accidentally hearing anything from anyone else."

"And how do you feel about it?"

"It's complicated. As a soon-to-be cop, I understand the reasons why. As his son, no way."

Rosie shook her head. "I know they have kept themselves safe since those early days before we were born. But anything can happen at any time. I can't even think about it."

"I know… I found out something else. Mom was injured on the job two years ago."

"WHAT?! How?"

Ben sighed. Maybe he shouldn't have said anything. "We got a case study in class, and it was from Homicide. The team cornered a suspect, not realizing his accomplice was hiding around the corner. The "Captain" was back up at the scene and was the first person to encounter the second suspect. They both fired guns at the same time. Mom killed the guy, but not before she took a bullet in the arm."

"How do you know it was Mom? How would she have been able to hide that from us?"

"We sometimes get case files from other municipalities, but I knew. Our instructor referred to the Captain as a 'she' and acted like she knew the person well. Lieutenant St. John kept throwing me glances as if I already knew all about the case. Anyway, you were dorming, and I remember she had her arm in a sling for a couple of weeks- said she injured it during her department physical and tore a muscle. Yeah, because a freakin bullet went through it. Next time you see her in a tank top, check out her left arm. There's a tiny scar."

"See! That is why they need to be DONE!"

"Thinking back, I remember Dad was not himself during that time. You know them, they never fight, and there were lots of raised voices when I was at work or with friends, and they thought Sam was asleep. She was worried, but then you came home for the summer, and everything went back to normal."

"Well, Dad shouldn't talk. He's doing just as dangerous work with these Vice raids." Rosie eyed Ben with frustration. "I hate that you are becoming a cop."

Ben smiled. "C'mon Rosalie, it's not all bad. They would have never met if it wasn't for the job. I mean, their love story could be a Hallmark movie."

Rosie laughed. "Gram would be thrilled, that's the only channel she watches."

"Speaking of love stories," Ben countered, "any significant others I should know about?"

"I'm too busy for a relationship. I have girlfriends, but they are girls that are friends. I think all of the possibilities are hibernating for the Buffalo winter."

"You know, Becca has a sister…"

"Really? Well, that's intriguing."

"Let's all grab a beer together this week. No pressure, just meet her. She's great. Her name is Maggie, and she's a nurse at Edgewater Hospital."

"Really? Gorgeous Becca has a sister in the medical field. I'm not the only one with surprises today."

"Feel up to grabbing a quick bite before the game?"

"Burgers and a beer at Benny's? I'm desperate to see the ocean."

"You got it."
