Fragile Hearts: Thirty-One

Naruto woke up long before Hinata did, but he decided not to disturb her. His cerulean blue eyes stared at the Hyūga's sleeping face that was facing him for a few long minutes. She looked paler than usual which made him frown knowing that it was because she was worried about him.

He reached forward and stroked her cheek with his thumb then picked up her limp hand and pressed the back of it to his lips. Placing it back down slowly he then proceeded to roll out of bed. He needed to shower and change his clothes...maybe even make breakfast for Hinata if she didn't wake up.

He got up slowly and winced from the pain he felt in his side, maybe sleep wasn't all he needed to get better. It took longer than expected but he finally got his clothes and locked himself inside his bathroom. Naruto looked at himself in the bathroom mirror and pulled his lips into a thin line. His eyes were dull and the band aid that was pressed over the cut on his cheek was a showstopper. Sighing he realized that Hinata had seen him when his face looked much worse, which made him cringe.

The blonde stripped off his clothes and got under the spray of the warm water. It was really relaxing, but it made him feel sleepy at the same time. Naruto's thoughts roamed as he took a shower; he thought of the fight he had with Toneri last night, of what he did and of Hinata of course. He needed to know why she came back so quickly and if she was okay. As much as he was going through a crisis at the moment he still wanted to make sure that she was doing well.

It was a while before Naruto was completely finished inside the bathroom. He stepped out with a towel to dry his wet hair and went downstairs. The blonde stopped when he saw Kurama sleeping in the couch in the living room. He smiled knowing that he'd usually sleep at the foot of his room, but since Hinata was there he didn't bother.

The Uzumaki continued to the kitchen and thought of what to make for Hinata. He knew she loved cinnamon rolls; Naruto scratched the back of his head as he didn't know where to even start when making them.

Let's just start with coffee.

He smiled at the thought and began making a fresh pot of coffee...something he was capable of doing.

Hinata didn't wake up until about an hour later. The sun had risen and the spot beside her was empty. The Hyūga slowly rubbed her eyes and yawned while using her free hand to feel for another body. When she felt only the bed cover she quickly turned to see if Naruto really wasn't there.

Where could he...?

Her thoughts trailed off as she got out of bed and started looking around. She didn't care how she looked, finding a certain blonde was her only priority at that moment. Her search led her downstairs where she passed Kurama sitting by the front door. Bending she rubbed his head gently, bidding him a good morning.

Suddenly there was a loud hiss that came from the kitchen followed by the sound of something falling. Kurama ran off towards the source of the sound with Hinata following behind; a puzzled expression plastered on her face. Upon entering the kitchen she saw Naruto with a finger in his mouth, while his other hand was busy turning on the tap.

"A-are..." She closed her eyes for a moment, trying to find her voice. "Are you okay?" It came out a bit hoarse due to her drowsy state.

The blonde placed the finger that was in his mouth under the running water. "Yeah don't worry," he said with a nod.

Hinata looked around the kitchen with a blank expression as she tried to figure out what was happening. "What h-happened?"

He turned off the pipe and turned to face her. "I uh...I accidentally burned myself," he explained with a crooked smile. The light from the kitchen window seemed to illuminate his golden head of hair, making it glow in the morning light. The cerulean blue-eyed boy was dressed casually in a grey T-shirt and knee length shorts. He looked better than he was last night, but Hinata was still worried about him.

"Let me see," the Hyūga responded squinting because of the brightness of the room. She walked towards him and took his hand with the injured finger; holding it up to her face she examined it.

"It's nothing," he said leaning against the counter.

"Hmm," she said looked at how red the skin was. "What were you doing?"

Naruto blushed and pulled back his hand slowly. He glanced at her through his peripheral vision and took note of her appearance. Hinata's hair was disheveled and her eyes were barely open, in all she looked extremely adorable which made explaining everything harder for him. "I was...making breakfast..." The Hyūga nodded and began looking around. He followed her gaze and finished his sentence, "...for you."

The pale girl froze and slowly turned around to face him. His eyes met hers and suddenly she found herself drowning in an ocean of blue...though it wasn't the first time and by then she knew it wouldn't be the last. "M-me?" She stuttered not sure if she had heard correctly. Naruto placed a hand on the back of his neck and nodded shyly unsure of her reaction. Hinata blushed but didn't look away for her counterpart seemed more embarrassed than her. "W-why?" She whispered starting to become more clearheaded.

The blonde shrugged, "I wanted to..." Hinata didn't respond which forced him to continue, "I've always wanted to have breakfast with you and I wanted to thank you for last night so I just thought that...I'd make...I don't know—something for..." He was becoming more and more frustrated with his inability to form coherent sentences.

Hinata smiled sweetly as she listened to him ramble, knowing the feeling all too well. Placing a hand on his she stopped him, "thank you...Naruto-kun." He nodded and she gave his hand a light squeeze. "So what did you make?"

"Well I tried to make your favourite—"

"Cinnamon rolls?" She gasped.

He nodded and pointed to the tray on the counter adjacent to them. "Yeah that's how they turned out..."

She arched her eyebrows and turned around to look at them. Her feet carried her closer, but it was not because of the smell. Hinata's lips parted as she stared at the burnt cinnamon rolls, she was speechless. "Uh..." She trailed off.

"I know they're horrible," Naruto admitted.

"M-maybe they actually taste good," she said trying to make him feel better.

"I doubt it," he muttered.

She picked one up, "it can't be..." She got distracted by Kurama's tail brushing against her leg and trailed off. Hinata looked down at the vermilion-colored dog who was busy sniffing a fallen cinnamon roll cautiously. It caught Naruto's attention and they watched as the dog turned away from the burnt roll. Slowly, the pale girl placed the one she had in her hand back down on the tray. "...that bad."

The Uzumaki frowned and sighed, "I'm sorry."

Hinata shook her hand and approached him once more. "It's the thought that counts so stop beating yourself up over it." He looked at her then nodded, but he was still quite sad. The pale girl panicked, not knowing what to do to cheer him up, she didn't like seeing him this sad. She bit the inside of her cheek and opened her arms slightly indicating that she wanted a hug.

Naruto didn't catch on quickly enough which made Hinata hesitate about continuing. Her hands touched both his sides where her fingers griped his T-shirt, only then did he realize that she was about to hug him. "Um," she whispered still not close enough.

Maybe this isn't a good idea...

The blonde shook his head with a playful smile on his face and pulled her into his embrace. She was surprised, but she didn't pull away. Her face was pressed against his shoulder, her eyes looking through the window.

He smells good.

She mentally scolded herself for being weird. Naruto's hands ran up and down the length of her back in a soothing way which made her wonder who was comforting who. "Are you okay?" He asked, but the way he said it in a deep and concerned voice was slowly lulling her back to sleep.

She closed her eyes and turned her face towards the crook of his neck. "Yes...you?"

Naruto let out a huff of air before responding with a simple, "yes." He picked up a stand of her hair and looked at it as he thought about what to ask her next. "Did you sleep well?"

Hinata blushed and was about to pull away but he stopped her by tightening his arms around her. "Don't go..."

I hate you.

She hated the things he did to her and the way she would easily fall under his spell with only a few words. She hated him because he gave her what she craved the most. Love.

"I did sleep well, but I'm more concerned about you."

"Don't be, I'm fine as long as you're with me." He said with a smile.

She blushed crimson and buried her face further into his shoulder to hide her flustered face. "You're the oddest creature."

Naruto chuckled and rested his chin on the crown of her head. "You never let me forget."

...

"You can't be serious," Hinata said following behind the Uzumaki.

"I am," he said fixing his tie.

"B-but you're not better yet."

Naruto smirked, "Hinata I'm fine."

"Still, you should at least take the day off," she said grabbing his car keys that were on the table.

"They need me."

But so do I.

"I'm not letting you leave," she said standing her ground. Naruto rolled his eyes and held out his right hand. "What?"

"My keys," he said trying not to laugh at how adorable she looked.

She shook her head, there was no way she was letting him go to work in his condition. "No."

Naruto groaned and glanced at his watch, "Hinata."

"No, you need to rest Naruto-kun."

He smirked and placed a hand in his pants pocket, "admit it, you just want to take care of me."

"W-what?" Naruto started walking towards her which made her take a few steps back. She then remembered that she needed to stand up to him and stopped.

"You like having me around," he stopped in front of her. She shook her head and he inched closer, "you love me."

Hinata stared up at him, "w-what n-no," she said averting her eyes.

Naruto smirked while keeping his eyes on her, "come on Hinata, if you admit it I'll stay."

Her eyes widened and she faced him once again, but this time she didn't respond. They merely stared at each other until Naruto's eyes left hers and trailed down to her lips. He bent his head and she didn't object, they were centimeters apart and getting closer by the second. It was going great, until a knock on the door disturbed them. Naruto and Hinata broke apart quickly, both annoyed that they were unable to kiss.

The Uzumaki walked towards the door with a blank expression and opened the door. To his surprise his friend was the one standing there. "Sasuke?"

The black-haired man sighed and gave him an apologetic look before pulling out a handcuff. "I'm sorry Naruto," he whispered.

The blonde furrowed his eyebrows, "what? Why? What's going on?" He asked looking at the other police officers that were outside.

"You're under arrest for assault and battery," he said as he was about to take one of Naruto's hands, but he pulled back.

"What's going on?" Hinata asked coming to the door. Sasuke's eyes widened upon seeing her.

"Hinata, stay inside," Naruto instructed.

"Don't resist arrest Naruto," Sasuke hissed. "It'll only make it worse for you."

"But Sas—"

"Naruto," he said giving him a stern look. The blonde sighed and allowed Sasuke to handcuff him.

Hinata furrowed her eyebrows, "what are you doing? Sasuke-san?"

"Take him," the Uchiha instructed another officer.

"Yes Sir," he responded taking a hold of Naruto's right arm.

Hinata shook her head and was about to grab his other arm when Sasuke grabbed her wrist, stopping her. "Don't Hinata."

"Sasuke-san s-stop," she said trying to pull her hand back. "This isn't right," she said getting louder as Naruto was being escorted to the police car.

"There's nothing I can do," the raven-haired man said with his head hung.

Tears filled the Hyūga's eyes as she stared at Naruto's back. "You can't do this," she sobbed.

"I have no—Hinata stop!" Sasuke yelled grabbing her arm, she was halfway out the door when he stopped her. Naruto turned around when he heard the commotion and looked at her.

"You can't just take him. H-he didn't do anything wrong," she sobbed looking at him. Sasuke pulled her back and made her face him.

"It's okay Hinata," Naruto said with a small smile. She shook her head, but didn't respond, "I'll be alright...Sasuke."

"Yes?" He answered still looking at Hinata.

"Take care of her."

"I can't promise you that."

Naruto frowned, "why?"

Sasuke finally looked at him, "because that's your job." Naruto scoffed getting the hidden meaning. He nodded and allowed himself to enter the police car. He took one last look at Hinata and sighed, things didn't look good, and she usually made him feel like it was all okay.

But this time he wasn't sure
