Chapter 4

.

He looked up at Gia, his heart beating so fast, as if it was about to leap out of his chest." What did you just say?" he asked, while staring at her, his voice low, the look on his face desperate, making Gia feel a tug at her heart.

She did feel sorry for the man. He'd been through so much— that, Gia was certain of. She remembered how much effort he put into finding his wife years ago. For months, he went searching for his wife, not a hair on his head thought of giving up. Gia knew how much she meant to him, and at first was against it, when she was ordered to make him believe that his wife was dead. She remembered like it happened yesterday, when she led Christian Grey to his 'deceased wife' into the morgue.

**FLASHBACK**

.

One hour before Christian Grey walked into the City morgue, Detective Gia Matteo had received orders to make him believe his wife was murdered. She was fiercely against it, but no matter what she said or suggested, the plan stayed the same. She had to deceive a man— this man named Christian Grey.

As she stepped out of her car and stepped inside the morgue, she dreaded what was about to occur. The moment she walked through the hall, she noticed Mr. Grey impatiently standing in front of the medical examiner's office. With a huge lump in her throat, Gia walked towards the copper-colored haired man.

"Mr. Grey?" she said, her voice shaky, while attempting to cover up her trembling hands.

He turned towards her, and looked her straight in the eyes." Detective Matteo?" he replied, his voice deep, while the look in his eyes almost made Gia want to run out the morgue.

She swallowed hard, and decided to act professional. But it was so difficult for her, because she was about to tell this man a gigantic lie— one that would destroy him from the inside out. One that would destroy his family... Gia was certain of that, because she knew how much he loved his wife.

"Shall we, Detective Matteo? I'm ready." She heard him say, his voice breaking in the end.

She nodded in response." This way, Mr. Grey." She commented and led him towards their destination.

As they both reached the metal door, she walked inside first." Wait here."

He nodded at that, and stood in his spot. She opened the door, and greeted the medical examiner. As he pulled the white blanket down to reveal the body that was lying on the table, Gia almost wanted to throw up. However, she was able to keep herself in check and walked over to Christian.

"You can come inside." She told him, her face expressionless at that moment.

At hearing that, he walked through the door, and halfway the room abruptly came to a halt. The moment his eyes landed on the brunette lying on the metal table, Gia saw how his face instantly turned pale. She noticed how Christian Grey's body reacted at the sight before him. While tears pooled in his gray eyes, he slowly walked closer. And the second he had reached the body on the table, tears were streaming uncontrollably down his face. As he watched the brunette, Christian's hands started to tremble heavily.

"Is it r- really her?" he questioned, unable to believe that the woman on the table was his wife.

The face of the brunette was so battered that she was unrecognizable.

Gia didn't want to lie, but yet she did." Yes, we've tested it, Mr. Grey... The DNA is a match to your wife's."

As those words reached his ears, a loud gut-wrenching sob escaped Christian's lips, making the hairs on Gia's neck stand up. She wanted so badly to tell him that it wasn't her! It wasn't his wife! But those words refused to leave her lips. She watched in horror as the mighty Christian Grey sank to the floor, while he grabbed the dead brunette's hand. That day, Gia saw how a lie was able to destroy a man completely. In the months that he offered his assistance to the Police to search for his wife, not once did Gia see him falter.

He kept his emotions in check, and stood tall and firm. But at this very moment, that big, tall, strong man sat on the cold, hard City morgue's floor, sobbing for his 'deceased' wife. While watching and hearing Christian, Gia couldn't turn her head away, even if she tried. As his lonely, gut wrenching sobs echoed in the room, she wanted to run once more, the sound of his voice cutting right through her heart and soul.

"Why, Ana? Why?" he sobbed, while squeezing her hand tightly." I cannot... Aurora and I cannot live without you"

** End of FLASHBACK**

.

And now here they were, Christian Grey and her, once again standing in the same space, while she finally was telling him the truth about his wife.

He instantly walked up the stairs, correction, leaped up the stairs, and stood right in front of Gia in a blink of an eye. How he got upstairs that fast, was beyond her.

"What did you just say, Detective Matteo?" he growled, as he towered over her, his hands clenched into huge fists.

At that, she swallowed hard but still looked straight at him." I know. I know that we've been…" she began, but he cut her off.

"No!" he roared, while tears of anger pooled in his eyes." No, not they, not we, but YOU! You lied!" he shouted, all the pain and agony from the last four years pouring out from within him, leaving through his pale lips." Did you enjoy seeing me like that in the morgue?! Did you?!"

"Mr. Grey! I am so sorry for everything and I understand—"she started, but once more, he cut her off.

"You have no clue, Detective Matteo! No clue at all!" he hissed, while the tears spilled from his eyes without his accord.

At seeing that, Gia's eyes fluttered shut and she let out a deep breath. In the state that Christian was in right now, the way she had ambushed him with the knowledge of his wife's disappearance, she knew that she had to be very careful with her words.

He appeared to be at his breaking point, so Gia had to be cautious.

She decided to change the subject, maybe he would calm down a bit. So she opened her eyes, and looked up at him." Mr. Grey, I have to inform you that there are dangerous people out there who want to do you harm. They almost captured you, but my partner and I, we swooped in and got you out last night. Remember?" she said, her voice pleading.

In response, Christian clenched both hands into fists, attempting to contain his rage. "Why are you changing the subject, Detective? You know what? Clearly you people do what you have to do, doesn't matter if you hurt and destroy others! Lies... all of it, lies!" he said angrily." Well, I don't need your protection. I can take care of myself. And as much as I would love to do and say things right now that I know I will regret later on, I want to know just this one thing, Detective. And don't you dare lie to me...Where the hell is my wife?!"

Gia was just about to respond, but then her eyes darted over to someone or something behind him, her eyes wide.

"I'm right here, Christian" he heard a familiar voice say from behind him.

.

.

Meanwhile at Christian's villa, Gail was busy in the kitchen, preparing food.

"Where's daddy?" she heard Aurora ask, while tugging on Gail's apron.

As her eyes landed on the little girl, Gail felt her heart break all over again. She turned off the electrical stove and grabbed Aurora's small hand.

"Come here, sweetie" she said and led her towards the dining room." Sit here"

"Where's daddy?" she repeated, her big, blue eyes filled with tears." We didn't have breakfast together... and he didn't give me kisses, before going to work. Do you know why?"

Gail sighed deeply, and cupped her gorgeous face." I told you already, Aurora... your dad will come home soon" she managed to say, as her heart dropped inside her chest.

"But when is soon?" Aurora insisted." Can we call him? Is he in an important meeting?"

Gail shook her head in response." No, sweetie... we cannot call him"

Aurora shook her head." I won't talk long, Gail... just a few words. Just to ask him how he is... and to tell him that I love him" she told her, as tears began to roll down her cheeks.

With all her might, Gail swallowed the huge lump in her throat." OK, OK... we'll call, but uhmmm, if he doesn't pick up, that means his meeting is too important." she lied." You must understand, Aurora. Sometimes, he just can't answer his phone"

Aurora smiled through her tears, and nodded happily." I understand... if he doesn't pick up then at least I'll be hearing daddy's voice on the voicemail message"

As those words reached Gail's ears, her heart bled. Poor little girl... little did she know that her father's been missing since last night.

She watched as Christian's daughter grabbed the phone, and listened patiently." Voicemail" she whispered, and then left a message for her father.

Tears pooled in Gail's eyes, while hearing what Aurora was saying.

It was then, when she heard the front door open and shut with a force.

"Fucking cops!" Luke growled, as he walked in.

"Shhh!" Gail shushed him, then mouthed." She doesn't know about her dad"

Sawyer then walked towards the fridge and grabbed a beer from it.

"Aurora, are you done, sweetie?" Gail asked.

"Yes, Gail" she replied." I told daddy to hurry up"

"Good" Gail said, and smiled." Go play with your toys, sweetie. I'll have a quick talk with uncle Luke"

"OK" She replied and grabbed her 'Nijntje'.

"Those Police officers are fucking useless!" Sawyer spat, and then took the last swig from his beer.

"What happened? Tell me?" Gail said and took a seat at the dining table.

"Nothing... nothing at all" he said, gritting his teeth. Sawyer was seething!

"Didn't you explain that he's unreachable on his phone and that he's nowhere to be found?" Gail questioned.

He nodded in response." I did" Luke replied." But, the Police officer said that they couldn't do anything. I have to wait 24 fucking hours! Then, I can report him missing!"

At that, Luke hit the table with his fist, making Gail jump up, startled.

"Did you tell them he would NEVER leave without his daughter? He won't ever disappear without our acknowledgement!" Gail said, while getting angry herself." Did you tell them that?"

"I did" Sawyer replied, and clenched both hands into fists." We have to wait"

"Have you looked everywhere, Luke?"

He nodded." Yes, Ethan and Jose have also called all the hospitals in the area" Luke replied." But with no success"

Gail was so worried and on edge, and noticed how her hands began to shake." We have to find him"

It was then, when they both heard a cell phone ring loudly.

It was Sawyer's.

"Ethan, tell me you have good news" he said into the phone.

"Luke, we've found his car" he heard Ethan say." But there's no sign of Christian anywhere"
