Aftermath

Disclaimer: I own nothing.

He still hadn't said anything.

Max kept shooting anxious glances towards the silent figure at the back. Kai sat perfectly still, eyes closed and arms folded, as if he hadn't saved Max's life half an hour ago.

As if they hadn't been trespassing.

Sneaking around the BBA Research Centre had seemed like a good idea at first, but then they'd found themselves tangled up in all those lasers. Then Max had seen his mom and tried to get her attention and…

And then Kai was there, and the next moment Max was flying backwards, the breath knocked out of him and a steel band around his waist.

Max didn't know whether he wanted to keep as far away from the captain as he could or stay close to him. He'd saved Max's life – and he was bound to be furious with the other Bladebreakers.

For the rest of the evening, Max waited for the captain's anger.

It didn't seem to be coming.

"Kai?"

He turned around and saw Max standing behind him. The blond's shoulders were slightly hunched, as if he were trying to make himself smaller, but then he relaxed. Max straightened his spine and looked Kai right in the eye.

Not showing any fear or weakness. Good.

"I wanted to say thanks," Max said. "For saving me."

Kai nodded once. There was no need to say anything – this time.

Getting information on your opponents was one thing but endangering yourself was another. Should Max do so again, Kai would not be so lenient.

Hope you enjoyed it!
