A bat is resting on a branch of a tree in the yard of Roxanne's home. The night in this part of town is calm. The crickets are performing their chipping musical, and every person in this neighbourhood is currently on their night's rest. Other than the cricket noises, the night is peaceful and quiet until a scream of horror echoes through the neighbourhood. The bat is startled and flies away. The crickets' orchestra is interrupted, and some of the neighbours are rudely awakened.
In Roxanne's living room, Winston and Lola are awakened by Roxanne's horrified scream. "Roxanne!" They stand up and dash upstairs as fast as possible. Upon reaching upstairs, they see Roxanne standing in the doorway between the dark hallway and her lit bedroom.
"What's wrong?!" Lola asked as she approached her best friend in concern. As she and Winston look inside Roxanne's bedroom, they see the source of her apparent horror: Alfred dressed in her gown.
Alfred screams in horror, and Winston and Lola follow suit. They continue screaming for about another thirty seconds.
"Alfred?!" Winston is in a state of bewildered shock.
"What are you guys doing up this early?!" Alfred asked, his heart racing. "I thought you were all asleep!"
"We were gonna ask the same thing!" Lola exclaimed. "Why the heck are you wearing Roxanne's gown?!"
"I… I… I…" Alfred is at a loss for words. How is he going to explain this to his friends, let alone his girlfriend?
"Everybody calm down!" Winston orders everyone. "Let's take a few deep breaths!" He faces Alfred. "Alfred, do you mind explaining why you are wearing Roxanne's pageant gown?"
Alfred sighs in defeat. His friends have found out his secret, so he might as well explain himself. "Okay. Okay, okay. I'm gonna fess up: I'm into girl things."
"You are?" Roxanne inquired.
"Yes!" He confirms. "And I have no shame! Well, actually. I do have some shame."
"Can you elaborate?" asked Winston.
Alfred takes another sigh. "Since I turned two, I have taken interest in traditional feminine interests, or to put it in mainstream terms, I am into girl things. In secret, I play with the dolls my mother used to use. I put on makeup. I try on dresses as I did just now. You get the idea."
Winston, Lola, and Roxanne nod in understanding, but there is one thing they still do not understand.
"Okay, but why would you hide this from us?" Roxanne wondered.
"Don't you get it? I'm a boy! I'm not supposed to do girl stuff! But I am! And I'm afraid that if people found out, I'll be a laughing stock!"
"Ohhhh…" the children now understood.
"And now that you guys have found out, promise me you'll never tell anyone about this!" Alfred exclaimed. "Especially my father!"
"But-" Winston was about to object but was suddenly interrupted.
"Promise?!" Alfred begged.
Winston sighs in defeat. "Fine. We promise."
"Good! Now if you excuse me, do you guys mind stepping out of the room so I can change back to my pyjamas?"
