Hello everybody! Today we've got something a bit more special! This story is dedicated to my good friend Guardian of 2fort, who really likes this couple, so I figured I'd write something short with the two of them! I also want to just try writing something a bit out of my usual comfort zone! Hopefully you all enjoy this one shot! Let's get started!

Facades

Nothing had been the same since Eggman took over, of that much Whisper was sure. Despite the Resistance's best efforts, nothing seemed to be helping. Their situation was becoming more and more hopeless as time went on.

To think this all started not too long ago when Sonic was captured… She'd heard of the hedgehog of course, who hadn't? She wondered how he was doing now… Probably not particularly great if Eggman had any say in it…

Still, that wasn't to say they hadn't had their own small victories. The slowly growing uprising was certainly evidence of that. Their most recent break however, had come about when they'd finally tracked down something, or rather, someone…

When she'd first met Tails, she'd been surprised. She'd heard a lot about the kitsune, specifically what he'd been like before the war.

He seemed nothing more than a hollow shadow of that now…

He'd been a lone wanderer, not really doing much aside from fighting his own struggle to survive. She'd heard he'd lived on his own before meeting Sonic however, and his level of experience in being a vagabond was certainly easy to notice in his demeanor.

Once they'd convinced him to come back, he contributed to the Resistance, but more often than not he was busy blaming himself for everything that went wrong and that had happened. Knuckles, the de facto leader of their little operation, had tried to talk some sense into him with little success. Despite all the guilt he had constantly weighing on his shoulders, Whisper found him pleasant to talk to. She always noticed faint glimpses of his former self in their conversations, moments where his previous fire and enthusiasm had slipped through, only to then return to the smoldering embers that were becoming all too familiar.

The fox preferred to keep to himself, and eventually, started avoiding contact with the other Resistance members whenever possible. He'd lock himself in his workshop for days on end, leaving only for absolute emergencies.

Despite this, Whisper kept trying to talk with him, and slowly but surely the two had developed a budding friendship. Simply spending time with the kit was something she enjoyed, even if he was quite difficult to talk to at times…

So when Tails suddenly went missing again, no doubt to return to his old wanderer ways, Whisper was the obvious candidate to bring him back.

She'd tracked him down late one evening, sat on the edge of the roof atop one of the many ruined buildings that made up the city, even with the setting sun in the background, it was easy to make out who it was.

"Tails… What are you doing out here?" She asked, finally reaching the top of the service ladder and climbing onto the roof.

"I don't want to talk right now Whisper…" The fox replied, even with his relatively quiet voice the wolf could feel a sorrowful tone in his words. "Just leave me alone…"

For a moment she considered obliging the fox's request, maybe he just needed some time alone… She quickly shook the thought from her head, he'd had more than enough time alone with his thoughts, and clearly it hadn't helped, this wasn't something he'd be able to get over on his own.

"Well, would it be alright if I just stayed here? We don't have to talk, I just don't want you to have to be alone out here."

The fox seemingly considered her words for a moment, but ultimately didn't answer. He didn't resist however when the wolf sat down next to him, her large black cloak resting over her.

The two sat in silence for a few minutes, Tails seemingly trying his best to ignore her as he avoided eye contact, turning away from her and looking down at the edge of the roof near him.

After a bit however, the sound of quiet sobs made their way to the wolf's ears. She looked over at the kitsune, who was trying his best to avoid crying, and was seemingly doing a poor job at it.

"Do you want to talk about it?" She asked.

This time her question didn't fall on deaf ears as the fox responded. "It's just… It's all my fault…" He spoke, forcing his words out between sobs. "It's my fault everything's like this… It's my fault Sonic's…"

The fox didn't bother finishing that last sentence as all the emotions built up since the war started fell atop him at once. The torment of his emotions shattered any small sense of comfort as he broke into violent sobs, tears cascading down his face.

The wolf moved a bit closer to the kitsune, gently pulling him into the folds of her cloak, wrapping it around the two of them like a blanket, at the very least it gave him something to cry on. Nothing was spoken between the two of them for a while as Tails released all of his emotions, eventually, Whisper broke the silence.

"Tails, I know how you feel. I used to be like you right now."

"Yeah right…"

"I'm serious, before the Resistance, I used to be part of a group called the Diamond Cutters…"

The kitsune's sobs slowly started to subside as the wolf continued, "They were some of my closest friends… Family even.."

"What happened?" He asked, the sorrow in his voice from his recent emotional episode still easily discernible.

"I… I messed up… I wanted to stop and do something to help but they told me to run… I never saw them again after that… I couldn't help but blame myself for everything that had happened… I suspect you're feeling about the same right now…"

Tails was simply silent, taking in what Whisper had to say as she continued, "I understand how you feel Tails, you don't have to shut everyone else out. Doing that only makes it worse… The only way you get over something like this is by talking about it… I've heard a lot about you, mostly that you're kind and loving… I want to know where that went… What happened to the fox I've heard so much about?"

The fox sighed, taking a moment to gather his thoughts before speaking. "It's just I don't feel like I belong with the Resistance… Everyone that I knew there has changed so much and I just don't feel like I belong anymore…"

"Of course you belong, I think so at least and so does Knuckles, he's the one that sent me to find you after all." The wolf took the fox's hand underneath the cloak, "Everyone's concerned for you Tails, I hope you know that."

A faint smile crossed the fox's face, something Whisper hadn't seen in a while, "Thanks… That helped a lot."

A comfortable silence fell over both of them, until Whisper spoke once again. "What do you say we head back? I'm sure they'll be happy to see you."

"Actually… Before we go… T-There's something I want to say… T-To you that is…"

"What is it?" The wolf asked, curious about what was on the kitsune's mind now.

"It… It's just… I…" He stammered, trying to express his thoughts. With each word a bright red blush spread across his face. "I-I think I love you Whisper…"

The wolf's face turned a matching bright shade of red in embarrassment as she heard those words, "T-Tails! I-"

"You're just so nice to me… The fact you even bother to listen to what I have to say, and you're just so beautiful, and you're such a good friend and-"

"Tails…" Whisper interrupted, still somewhat in shock from Tails' sudden confession. "You… You really think all that?"

"I… I do," He responded, gently fidgeting out of nervousness. "I really do love you Whisper… I have since we started to be friends… I just didn't know how to tell you…"

The wolf was still completely stunned, had he really had a crush on her for that long? Thinking over her time with the fox however, she recalled several moments where Tails had gone out of his way to talk or do something for her.

"W-Wow I… I've never had anyone say that to me…" She responded, the blush on her face certainly nowhere near going away.

"Whisper… You're beautiful and so amazing… I can't even look at you without feeling all nervous… I just didn't even know what to say for the longest time or if you'd even like me back…"

"Of course I like you Tails! I can tell you're kind whenever we talk, I've just been so busy dealing with the Resistance that I guess I never stopped to…"

Her voice trailed off as she felt Tails take her hand again underneath the cloak, the red on his face visible even against the orange sunset in the sky. "So… We've both always felt like this?"

"I guess… I don't think I really recognized it until now… But I do love you Tails…"

"I love you too…"

They pulled each other into a tight hug, drawing the kitsune further into the folds of Whisper's cloak, close enough that they could both feel the heat coming off of the other's body.

As the two gazed deep into the other's sapphire colored eyes, it felt as though all their concerns and the facades they'd put up completely melted away, seemingly insignificant compared to the things they both were feeling right now. Both of them felt an immediate connection form, and as Tails leaned forward leaving their faces just inches apart, with the setting sun as the backdrop, they shared their first kiss.

To Tails, it was a dream come true, and to Whisper, it was a fulfillment of a dream she never even knew she had.

They held the kiss for a while, to both of them however, it felt like hours before they separated, still focusing on their feelings as they looked into each other's eyes, bright red blushes easily visible on each other's faces as they both took a second to catch their breath.

"So… I guess that's a thing now huh…" Tails spoke. The kitsune felt pure joy course throughout his entire body, his heart felt like it would burst right out of his chest. He'd just shared a kiss with the love of his life, and he couldn't be happier.

"I… I guess so…" Whisper responded, she felt similar feelings of pure happiness, as well as hope for the future that lie ahead of both of them. While this was certainly not the outcome she'd expected when she'd climbed up to the rooftop, she wouldn't have it any other way.

"How do you think the others are going to take it?"

"I'm sure it'll be fine, definitely going to surprise them for sure." The wolf put a hand around the fox's waist, holding the two close together. "But we can worry about that later, I just want to enjoy this…"

They sat in silence, enjoying the sunset and the feeling of love floating in the air between them. The wolf gently rested her head on the fox's shoulder, a feeling of overwhelming bliss in her chest.

"I love you Tails."

"I love you too Whisper."

While neither were sure where things would take them, or what was going to happen. They both knew that as long as they had each other, things would be just fine.

Alright everyone, that's it for this story! Hopefully you all enjoyed this rare but adorable pairing, I know I did! Feel free to leave a review with your thoughts on the story and I'll see you all later!
