Chapter Two

Luz, realizing she wouldn't make it on time if she walked, flew overhead and landed behind a bush. Luz stepped out from behind the bush and was met by the girl from earlier who exclaimed, "From the sky! You flew, and I saw that! I know I did!"

Luz gulped, realizing she would have to be more careful. Luz said, trying to divert attention, "What are you talking about? I was behind here the entire time. That hit to your head must have been worse than I thought."

Luz walked away, and the human called after her, "I'll catch you! I know I will! And I'll find out what you are!"

Luz started sweating as she entered the school which was bristling with students. Luz walked up to a random kid and asked, "How do I find Principal Bump?"

The kid shrugged, "He'll be in the office. Just go straight ahead until you see a glass window in the wall. Then go into the door beside it marked, 'Office.' Good luck, new kid. You're gonna need it here."

Luz chirped, "Thank you!" Luz then hurried and found the door the kid was talking about. She pushed it open and asked the receptionist, "Is Principal Bump here?"

Another door opened and Principal Bump, an elderly man with a scar going over his eye, welcomed Luz, "You must be Luz Noceda, the new student. Welcome. I think that you will like it here once you get settled in. Let's take the tour, shall we?"

Principal Bump took Luz around the school, showing her where everything was and showing her where her classes would be. The tour took a while, so Luz was 10 minutes late for her first class. Principal Bump escorted her and gave her a class schedule. Principal Bump opened the door to the classroom and let Luz in. The teacher welcomed Luz, "Hello, I'm Mrs. Bradford. Welcome to 9th Grade Economics. Why don't you introduce yourself to the class?"

Luz stood in front of the class and gulped, wishing she had read some more of the file so she knew here backstory. Luz decided to wing it and addressed the class, "My name is Luz Noceda. I just transferred here from another school. I live with my family at home. I am now in 9th Grade Economics."

Luz got some funny looks as a couple of students from the back snickered. Mrs. Bradford chuckled, "You certainly are. Why don't you take a seat by Miss Park over there?"

Mrs. Bradford pointed to an empty seat and Luz scampered over to it. Mrs. Bradford resumed the lesson and the girl next to her, a little pale, slightly pudgy, and who wore glasses, smiled and introduced herself, "Hi, I'm Willow."

Luz smiled back, "I'm Luz, nice to meet you."

Willow nodded before paying attention to what Mrs. Bradford was sating. Luz tried to keep up and was flabbergasted by the lesson. Luz thought that economics, while it seemed so simple, was just…. Over the top. A little confusing. At the end of class, when Luz was packing up to head to her next one, Willow stopped her and commented, "You looked confused by the lesson."

Luz asked, "Is it that obvious?"

Willow chuckled, "Do you want some help? Maybe we can study together sometime."

Luz grinned, excited that she was making her first human friend, "I would like that. I'll see you later?"

Willow replied as she walked away, "Yep, see you later."

Luz nearly squealed and scurried to her next class, a new excitement for the following day rushing through her veins.

Luz got through her first half of the day and made it to the cafeteria for lunch. She got a tray and looked around the room for a place to sit. Luz caught sight of Willow sitting at a table with a boy who looked a little younger than them, who motioned for Luz to join them. Luz started in that direction and when she was close, however, she tripped over somebody's foot and went crashing to the floor. Luz looked up and saw a girl with a ponytail wearing a letterman's jacket. Luz got up, brushed herself off, and picked up the remains of her lunch. While the bully and her table of friends snickered, Luz said, "I think you should apologize. That wasn't nice."

The girl's face furrowed, and she stood up, towering over Luz, "I'll let you get away with your remarks for now, new kid. Consider that your initiation. So, what's your name?"

Luz noticed the pale girl from earlier sitting at the table, her eyes still focused on Luz's wings. Luz sighed and turned back to the bully, "My name is Luz."

The girl cackled and replied, "That is so perfect! Your name is Luz-er now, okay? Now go and join your loser friends, if you can make any."

Luz hung her head and joined Willow and her friend. Willow shook her head, "I'm so sorry. Boscha just likes to pick on the new kids who come through. She'll lay off you soon enough when she gets bored. Besides, since she captain of the volleyball team, nobody can touch her. Our school puts its heart and soul into volleyball."

Luz sighed, her spirits slightly dampened, "Thanks Willow. I just don't know if I can fit in here. What if I'm too different?"

Willow's friend chuckled, "Don't worry about it. We're all human. All humans have flaws that make them stand out, but that is what makes us what we are."

Luz tensed up and gulped, "Right, all human. We are all human. Thanks, um, I didn't catch your name."

The kid extended his hand, "I'm Gus! Gus Porter."

Luz went to take his hand in a handshake, but she felt an intense coldness spread through her wings, pain shooting into her back. Luz turned around and saw the pale kid from earlier, "What is your deal?"

The girl's face froze, "I was just touching your wings. I'm sorry."

Luz's heart started to beat rapidly and she replied, "For the last time today, I don't have wings!"

Boscha and her table started to pay attention since one of their own was talking to the new kid. The pale girl stammered, "Th-then how di-did you fly earl-earlier? Huh? Y-you landed in the bushes." She steadied herself, "I know what I saw!"

Willow and Gus face-palmed and Boscha chuckled, walking over. "Amity, that's not how you say it. IT goes, 'Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?'"

The girl, Amity, grew pink and exclaimed, "That's no that I meant!"

Amity then stormed out and Boscha returned to her table, chatting with her friends. Luz turned back to Willow and Gus, "So what's Amity's deal?"

Willow shrugged, "Not much. vice principal's daughter, bully, high in the food chain. She used to be nice, but then she started school. She can't be touched. Too high in the food chain. Steer clear from her and her friends. Once they sink their teeth into somebody, well, let's just say we have a lot of students transfer out."

Luz gulped, realizing who she was dealing with, "Got it. I'll… I'll stay away from them."

Hey guys, gals, and non-binary pals, I'm sorry for this chapter. It isn't where I'd like it to be, so it is most likely going to be revamped in the future. Please comment who you would like to see integrated into the story, or any characters you'd like to see stay out of it. Any moments you want to see happen as well. Also, I apologize if I can't produce these chapters on a regular basis, but I'll try to. I'm a student, if it helps to explain it. Thanks for reading and I'll see some of you next chapter! Remember to leave any recommendations or criticism below, good or bad. It is much appreciated. I again would like to apologize for this chapter.
