Chapter 7: The Battle of Tokyo

TOKYO
JUNE 13, 22:17 UTC+9

The Justice League's Gamma Squad, composed of Captain Atom, Plastic Man, Elongated Man, and Steel arrived in Tokyo as there was an Apokoliptan ship in the immediate vicinity. As they headed for the outer edge of the city, the four superheroes saw the Japanese military units, armed with the enhanced technology from the Justice League and some of the high-grade military tech of their own design making their way through the streets, which were devoid of citizens as in Metropolis and Mexico City. On their way, Steel managed to catch on to a message sent to the soldiers below. Over the radio, a voice said urgently, "An Apokoliptan vessel has been sighted some eight hundred yards off Tokyo Bay! It's headed towards Shinagawa!"

"We'd better get to the pier and ready ourselves for battle," said Steel.

"Roger that," Captain Atom replied.

And the four heroes headed on to Shinagawa Pier, where a few thousand soldiers had gathered in defense of the city. When they arrived, the four Leaguers went to meet quickly with Hiroshi Nakamoto, the general of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces.

"Konichi-wa, Justice League. Thank you for coming so soon," General Nakamoto said to Captain Atom and the others when they arrived.

"Are Japan's military units fully prepared for Darkseid's attack?" Captain Atom asked immediately.

"Yes, Captain Atom," General Nakamoto replied. "50,000 men are here on Shinagawa Pier with forty Mazer tanks as well as the upgraded military technology America delivered to us from you. More than 100,000 more soldiers are positioned further into Tokyo in case our front lines aren't enough to hold off the advance."

"And the Justice League will not be alone in their defense of Tokyo," came another voice, this time a woman's.

Captain Atom and his companions looked in the direction of the voice and saw the speaker was Katana, the samurai superhero whom Batman had worked with on several occasions. To the surprise of the Justice Leaguers, Katana had brought Asami Koizumi, who was a recent addition to the Outsiders. Asami explained in nearly fluent English that Batman had allowed Katana to teach her to master her power of Chi-manipulation as well as the English language.

"Though my superhero title is better suited for Katana, you may call me Samurai," she said.

"Good to have you with us, Samurai," replied Captain Atom with a bow, which Asami (now Samurai) returned. Then Plastic Man tapped Captain Atom on the shoulder and said, "Sorry to interrupt, Your Captainship, sir, but we have Parademons and other Apokoliptan goons coming in now!"

It was true, for at that moment, hordes of Parademons were headed straight for Shinagawa followed by Doom Hawks, Hell Hounds, and Draco-Tanks. The Justice League and the Japanese army readied themselves to fight, and General Nakamoto gave the order to military headquarters, "Begin the counterattack."

"2nd and 3rd, 6th and 7th Air Wing beginning counterattack," came the reply.

Two large squads each of Heron jet fighters and Griffon fighters along with Mitsubishi fighters enhanced with laser cannons, high-grade missiles, and deflector shields roared through the sky at Darkseid's invasion force. They opened fire on the attackers and many Parademons and Doom Hawks received photon blasts and radar-controlled missiles at point-blank range. In moments, the sky was patterned with explosions so bright that the stars faded. Though most of the monsters in the front lines went down, several jet fighters were destroyed as well, and those pilots who escaped their jets sent them careening into the enemy ranks while they drifted away on parachutes.

While the Air Force held Darkseid's attackers back, the Justice League and the ground forces prepared to face the horde of Parademons and war machines that had not been slowed down. General Nakamoto gave the order for the Maser tanks to open fire on the Hell Hounds and Draco-Tanks, which burst into flames from the energy beams that coursed over every circuit, gear, and power cell. Another band of soldiers, led by Colonel Ichiro Kaneko and Captain Akira Noguchi, fired at the Parademons and Doom Hawks with portable Masers, downing several of the monstrosities as they came on. A few soldiers fell in the initial attempt, but where one man went down, several more took his place.

The Justice League moved in to fight as more Parademons and Doom Hawks came on, and the first of the heroes to strike was Captain Atom. He rose up to meet them and extended his hands, releasing his awesome atomic energy. The attacking Parademons barely had time to howl "For Darkseid!" when they were hit by Captain Atom's radiation. The searing heat and rushing particles melted their armor plating, and hundreds of the monsters fell from the sky with terrifying shrieks and shattered into flaming pieces on the ground. He flung blasts of energy at several Draco-Tanks, and then at many Doom Hawks and more Parademons, and each time the creatures failed to reach him or the ground forces. Even if some of the creatures managed to lay hands on him, Captain Atom blasted them away with atomic energy waves.

Plastic Man cracked his knuckles with a grin as the Parademons came at him. Then as a few of them landed, the stretchable hero wrapped them in his long arms and whiplashed them into some of their own comrades. He stretched his legs so more Parademons and even a few Doom Hawks were booted out of the sky and stretched his hands to the size of tires and dealt them punches that packed an extra bounce. Plastic Man tripped a few Hell Hounds by stretching himself between streetlights or wrapping his body around their legs. He bounced more Parademons away, and when some Doom Hawks tried to hit him with lasers, his rubber-like flesh slingshotted the beams back at their owners.

While Plastic Man held off one portion of the attack force, Elongated Man was dealing with some more of Darkseid's monster warriors in a much different fashion. He twisted himself into a bouncing ball and ricocheted off several Parademons and even a few Hell Hounds, sending them straight into each other and causing several head-on collisions. When some more Parademons attacked with energy pikes and Agony Gauntlets, he bounced like a spring to avoid their attacks and bounced them away with his legs.

Several more Parademons swept down on a battalion of soldiers led by 1st Lieutenant Sara Tanaka and several of the men were injured in the first attack. However, as Lieutenant Tanaka prepared to meet her doom at the hands of one Parademon, Steel rushed up behind the monster and struck a mighty blow with his magnetized hammer, and the impact was so hard that the Parademon was catapulted into a skyscraper and exploded. Steel saluted Lieutenant Tanaka and then rushed into battle, swatting more Parademons out of his way with shocking efficiency. Then the armor-clad hero positioned his hammer and fired an energy beam at a Hell Hound. The shot splintered the mechanical beast's left leg and sent it crashing upon a Draco-Tank, and both machines burst into flame.

Altogether, the battle for Tokyo's defense was going well, but Darkseid's contingency attack was unrelenting. More and more Parademons and Doom Hawks filled the sky while several Hell Hounds and Draco-Tanks made their way toward Shinagawa Pier. That's when the Japanese ground forces and the Justice League got some relief, for the Japanese navy had moved out to fight. They opened fire with ship-mounted photon cannons and radar-controlled torpedoes, ripping Darkseid's lines to pieces and diverting the attention of thousands of the attackers. When a handful of the creatures made for the destroyers, carriers, and battleships, several submarines counterattacked with missiles that released waves of sonic energy on detonation, wiping out hundreds of Parademons and Doom Hawks in one shot. Then to the amazed eyes of the Justice League and the Japanese soldiers, several more planes from China, Taiwan, and Thailand appeared in the sky from out of wormholes. They diverted even more attention from the Apokoliptan attack force, buying time for the ground defenders to get a second wind.

Emboldened by the new arrivals, the Justice League and the Japanese military fought on with vigor and resolve. As more Parademons swept into Tokyo, Katana and Samurai were waiting for them. Katana looked at her young apprentice with a smile and said, "Remember, Asami-san: a samurai must overcome fear. When fear is gone, the mind will be empty."*

"Hai, sensei," replied the younger girl. "The samurai never hesitates. He acts without anger and fights without mind."*

Katana's smile grew wider and she said, "I have trained you well, Asami-san. Remember what you have learned, for it could easily save your life."*

The two had no time to say more, for several Parademons suddenly landed and came at them with roars of bloodlust. Katana stood her ground and raised her sword Soultaker and uttered the creed of the samurai: "Fumeiyo no mae no shi."*

Then with a warrior's shout that rattled the ears of anyone nearby, Katana ran straight at the Apokoliptan monsters. She cut through the Parademons' armor like it was paper and moved at lightning-quick speed, never giving her monstrous opponents a chance to strike. Several Parademons fell to her sword and the rest were taken down by the Japanese military. Katana even felled a few Hell Hounds with the efficiency of a woodcutter and destroyed several Doom Hawks while not moving so much as a hair's length.

Samurai clapped her hands together, bringing her life force to the forefront of her mind. As she focused, the welling inside her heart grew stronger. She took a breath even as hundreds of Darkseid's warriors continued to advance on Tokyo. Finally, as a few Parademons came to land, Samurai opened her eyes. She bounded at the monsters, tackling them and knocking them away with fierce blows. Her kicks catapulted the Parademons and Doom Hawks away as if her feet were laced with springs and every punch was like being hit with a fifty-pound weight.

Thus far, the League and their allies were holding the lines well, but thousands of miles away in Europe, more Apokoliptan vessels were already making their descent to attack.

A/N: I had Asami Koizumi from Young Justice take the name Samurai as tribute to the SuperFriends character of that name and also because it would suit her if Katana trained her.
