A/N: Enjoy, the mayhem.
Sick But Not Twisted
Chapter Seven: The Great Indecision
It was cloudy.
Itachi actually didn't know Jiraiya had been there for a good chunk of time if she were, to be honest, but of all people, she was glad it was just him.
With Jiraiya's interruption, Itach gently placed the fruit basket by her feet, before fixing her robe and closing any distance between them.
Finally, they would know who the masked shinobi was, all of their intel, research, and the number of tips Itachi threw Jiraiya's way.
"Bold of you to address me so casually out in the open." Itachi looked up at the taller ninja, his hair as long as ever, and resoundingly there were no signs of the aging man slowing down.
Normally, Jiraiya would crack a joke to begin with or lighten the mood with a side comment, but at this moment Jiraiya didn't seem to be interested in keeping a fun environment, it was all business.
"…will you do the honors then?"
Of course, she would.
And with the quick flick of her hands and the use of a genjutsu she'd stolen from Kurenai years ago, the two ninja were invisible to most naked eyes—and only a master genjutsu specialist could hone in on their conversation—but by then, Itachi would have been well aware of their presence.
"Done." Itachi said, and that was Jiraiya's queue to begin interrogating Itachi.
"Itachi, who do you think this Tobi truly is?"
Her mind went blank, but Itachi did know a few facts about the ninja. He claimed to be Madara Uchiha, but from what she's read and heard, Madara Uchiha had a completely different set of abilities and to be completely fair, according to the historical account, had a much more impressive assortment of jutsu than that of Tobi. So, Itachi never believed that crap about him being the great Madara Uchiha. Still—all she knew was that he was an advanced sharingan user with pure hatred for Uchiha—maybe another Uchiha who had run away from Konoha long before the massacre, maybe even years prior.
But even at that moment, Itachi couldn't lay a finger on who could possibly fit that time frame—she wasn't privy to any Uchiha who had left the village and were still alive. Anbu had always made quick work of those who attempted to defect. So, despite there only being a small figure of Uchiha who'd successfully defected or left on legal terms, Itachi still couldn't think of any specific person who'd be alive.
"I'm not sure."
"I knew you'd say that, so I'll try and just tell you, hmm... I got into a skirmish with the masked man while trailing him to Kirigakure. You said he plays some sort of character like it's all a game?"
A skirmish?
Jiraiya-sama had fought him? She was happy he was unscathed, a full-scale battle with Tobi she knew would be costly, Tobi was the shinobi who had eliminated the entirety of her team, the man responsible for her ever gaining the sharingan in the first place, and that day was the first time she'd seen someone's mangekyo and she realized that Tobi had shown off his most powerful dojutsu just for Itachi—just to show her what she could obtain.
"Hm, he acts childish. Absent-minded and naive. You'd think he was a complete clown and he's deceived the rest of the Akatsuki well—so much so that most members think he's just an annoying initiate-associate who wants nothing more than to join our ranks. However, in secret he's confessed to me that he's Madara Uchiha."
But again, Itachi never believed that.
"Psst" Jiraiya didn't seem all too convinced either, it seemed like a claim that only served the purpose of invoking fear. " at first he seemed impossible to beat—"
"His jutsu—that space-time technique?"
"Yeah. And we fought for a small amount of time, maybe a little under twenty minutes, and I almost got overwhelmed." Jiraiya seemed to get this blank stare, looking past Itachi almost as if he were having a flashback "…scorched the town we were in in the process—I've already sent word to Konoha to send funds for repair—within that time I was able to discover that his jutsu—where every single one of my attacks slipped right through him, it could only stay activated for a maximum of five minutes." Jiraiya held up his hand to emphasize, then got real close and serious. "Itachi…I blasted his mask away…shattered…rasengan right to his chin. He underestimated Jiraiya the toad sage, huh!? Gave me the chance to get a good look at him."
Spectacular! She wanted to know who he was too!
"And we're familiar with this man?"
Now, Jiraiya was quiet, like he didn't know how to proceed or like he was pondering the best way to answer her question "Oh yeah, you most certainly know him."
She knew him? Who?
Tobi didn't resemble anyone she knew of, well until he cut his hair, he sort of resembled her favorite cousin Shisui.
But that, if anything, was impossible.
Jiraiya seemed to be withholding the information for a reason and whatever the reason Itachi was sure she wasn't going to like it, so she swallowed softly preparing for the news.
"What I'm about to tell you, you must tell not a soul."
What? After all these years he thought she would tell somebody?
Sure he was much more experienced with these types of things but, they've been working on this joint mission for so long, Jiraiya had to have been indubitably aware of her capabilities.
Itachi sighed, "Of course. I would never jeopardize our assignment nor would I purposely forsake Konoha and Hiruzen-sama's orders. Now please listen, Jiraiya-sama, I must kno—"
"Not even Kakashi."
"…"
Blink. Itachi blinked like five times, she bit her lip when she realized her words wouldn't register on her tongue.
Cool air blew around and between them.
Did he say Kakashi?
Cotton mouthed, Itachi's first instinct was to cover her ass "What, what would give you that implic—"
"I followed your crows back to your location, and they brought me to your location…earlier…in the cave."
Oh.
Ooooohhhhh.
Itachi looked down at the floor, her face becoming so heated she suddenly felt the urge to fan herself, but voted against it so as to not prove that she was crazy "You—saw us—"
And they both had been declothed and entangled! How was Itachi supposed to anticipate that happening? There wasn't any planning or calculations that went into it.
But each time she'd checked for any intruders, the coast had been clear. She didn't even hear or see one of her crows fly by. Had Itachi really let her guard down that low while being intimate with Kakashi? Was that what happened?
Never again.
"I'm sorry, I did. I was able to put together two and two from there. I didn't really see anything, I saved you two your privacy." he shook his head from side to side and fixed his throat "Now, you're a smart girl, you must know what you're doing is extremely dangerous. And I won't tell you how to live your life—think about what could happen to Kakashi. I say to you both, caution and more subtlety."
More subtlety?
But…she always thought about what could happen to her senpai. The possibility…the probability that they'd get caught and then there would be huge trouble…It had been stupid of her not to cast a genjutsu, but at the moment Itachi had only cared about Kakashi.
Kakashi-senpai could be exiled and it would be all Itachi's fault were that to happen.
Why should she drag down Kakashi, just because she wanted to have her little moments with him—with that thought Itachi felt like a selfish ass.
Kakashi would literally be executed for treachery..
Perhaps Itachi was a selfish ass? But all she really wanted was to enjoy their moments, it wasn't even like they indulge in one another every week—it was more along the lines of every few months. They weren't necessarily dating as far as she knew, but she thoroughly enjoyed his presence. Itachi couldn't figure out any other way to describe it, she wanted to be around him, to take part in the things he does, to get to know the mysterious Kakashi a little more.
She didn't make things easy for herself, huh?
What would she do if Kakashi was fatally harmed and it could've been avoided if only Itachi just hadn't gotten involved?
What would she do?
What could she do?
Could Itachi even prevent it? Any of it? Surely, Itachi wouldn't be passive while her Kakashi was in trouble. Then who would protect Sasuke? Then there would be nobody Itachi saw in this light—
"—I'm sorry—but—" And Itachi never finished that first thought, whether because she was embarrassed or because she was asocial she couldn't really tell you, but right then Itachi upright and straight, her chin high and boom, in the conviction in her voice louder than anything she's said previously "—I'll protect him! And I assure you, not one person will find out! Not as long as my hands can weave signs and these eyes bear the sharingan!" then she grabbed back her original demeanor just as fast. "I understand that this is a risk for both the mission and the safety of a comrade and as such, I take full responsibility for the irresponsibility of my emotions."
The toad sage if his brief pause spoke for itself. He then laughed and gave her a care-filled look
"I don't doubt you will or can, and don't think that I'll attempt to ruin anything—I used to watch Kakashi running around with Sakumo-san from my balcony when he was just a cute fall kitten. No, if you two make each other happy, who am I to break that up? I'll trust your judgment."
So, he wasn't mad or disappointed? Well, She didn't see any disappointment on his face.
Jiraiya kept speaking, "But, knowing this now, I'm not sure how I should proceed with telling you this information."
"Jiraiya-sama…my prerogative has and will never change, I still know what's necessary for the mission. Now, who did you see under the mask?"
The sannin blew out a sigh "I'll just say it…the masked man, the true leader of the Akatsuki shares the same face with the Uchiha boy who used to yell about on team 7, Minato-kun's team 7."
Impossible.
"Obito!?"
Subconsciously Itachi shut her jaw, her first instinct to argue—to properly explain that that was just completely impossible. But then she thought about it.
Why Tobi was adamant on joining Itachi in the massacre, and when Itachi denied him the right, he asked her if he could have the honor of killing this particular couple. And the masked man was so obsessed with this Uchiha couple that Itachi just gave him permission to eliminate them and only them.
Only at that did Itachi realize how significant the fact that that couple was Obito's parents. And even then she suspected that the masked man was just collecting sharingan eyes—if she had suspected that the masked man was Obito back then she would've asked so many more questions. But—Itachi's anxiety had reached an all-time ultimatum hours before she began the massacre.
"Or some grown man who looks like him."
And the realization began to sink like a boulder hitting the ocean.
Was Obito securing his chance to unlock the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan? He did collect sharingan eyes that day.
Kakashi-senpai! Immediately Itachi's mind jumped to Kakashi. How would he feel? He still thought that Obito was dead!
But then the circuits in her head weren't connecting. How could this be?
Obito had been a ninja of the leaf. How could he be alive, let alone be the leader of the Akatsuki? The doubt was there but then even louder was her intuition.
She would have to confirm herself to be a hundred percent certain, but her gut told her it was true.
"How is that possible?"
He shrugged, "I wish I could explain it, but I can't."
Theories immediately started flying around her head.
"Tobirama's Edo Tensei? …no, it would be more obvious in his appearance, even with the mask."
"Perhaps it's one of the rinnegan's abilities, and he was revived—maybe he's being controlled?"
"Maybe he never died to begin with? Or he's a clone? A lookalike?" Itachi suggested.
"Either way, the iceberg gets deeper the further we dive. We need to be ready for when they act, and we cannot let this information slip out. Only Hiruzen-sensei should be let known."
And to Itachi the whole thing was terrible.
Obito, Kakashi's former teammate, and best-friend, the one whose grave he constantly visited on his off time was still alive—and on top of that Obito was orchestrating possibly one of the most dangerous operations in ninja existence.
How could she just keep her mouth shut about that? Maybe he was the one who left the plasma scroll for her senpai?
Just like every other lie in her life. Everything about her felt inauthentic and she hated herself for it.
"I see…" was all Itachi felt the need to say.
Why did she always have to lie, especially to him? And it's not like she didn't have a choice, that was the main issue, she had a choice. But her options were weighed…
"I'll proceed to train my godson, get him ready for the day the Akatsuki make their first move. And they. Will. Not. Win. This is a good step forward."
But then, all of Kakashi's pain, his suffering and distraught from his lost friend from eons ago it all was for naught—surely it was something that would make his mind numb—further things to push him down his lonely path. It wouldn't help her mission for him to know, but something deep within her wanted Itachi to speak out, to not just tell him about Obito but about everything. To simply release all the lies that felt bottled up in her throat and it felt like someone had placed a huge boat anchor on her chest.
"A–are you sure?"
Of course, he was, why was Itachi being stupid? Why was she in denial?
"Huuh??"
"Are you sure that this is Obito we're speaking of? He's a hero, a war hero. To think—"
"Itachi, there is no doubt in my mind, I almost lost an arm taking that man's mask off."
"We must tell hokage-sama immediately."
"My thoughts exactly—we're really close to home, so I think I'll do it. Haven't seen my godson in a long time, you see. Plus it's always good to see Hiruzen-sensei."
With that, Itachi didn't say anything, it was like her mind was running a relay race.
"Itachi, take some time to process this, I can see there's a lot of turmoil boiling in you." And Jiraiya-sama turned, about to make his way out of the genjutsu and back to Konoha. "I'll keep in touch, whenever you see a toad every now and then—that's one of my 'guys' checking in on you."
A sudden shower of rain began to fall, splashing on her pale face and head.
She had to keep up the deception—for the good of Sasuke, Konoha and she could never forget Kakashi-senpai. Maybe it would all be okay because Itachi would fix everything? She just needed to think, she just needed a solution.
And without another word and the sound of grass slipping off his sandals, Jiraiya took his leave - seeming to evaporate in a puff of smoke, leaving Itachi to just stand there as her basket of fruit began to retain water.
So, Kakashi didn't wake to the thunder, he woke up to an empty sleeping bag and a moderately lit campfire at the far end of the cave.
A pouch and a few of her kunai were still neatly stacked against the cave wall, so he wasn't too worried that she'd just up and dipped. But Itachi just getting up and leaving most certainly came off as unusual.
But Itachi was a weird lady, he couldn't deny that. That was actually one reason he liked her, she was different, surprisingly caring, and had a strange enigma to her that he planned to slowly uncover.
Confident, powerful, and beautiful—unafraid and caring, eager to do things for him just because she wanted him to be happy. But for their first time together he took the lead and despite obviously not having too much experience in intimacy, Itachi had always been a fast learner.
He was content, his future was looking interesting especially if he was to take care of three genin soon, and thinking about it, he might've had the squad with the most interesting background to think of.
A clap of thunder and lightning reintroduced Itachi into the cave, the dimness of the candles catching her stoic visage, but he saw past her stoicism and Kakashi immediately realized that the spin cycle in Itachi's head was erratic and off. Her entire robe was wet and there was a small hand basket filled with what looked to be fresh fruit sitting in her hand.
What was wrong? Was it something he did? Was she attacked while she went out? Did one of her crows die?
But Itachi wasn't really one to be so easily offended—still, when she walked back up, went over to the fire campfire and relit it the purse of her lip and a fire style attack he knew something was deep on her mind.
He shouldn't have pushed so far, maybe they should've waited?
Then Itachi sat down parallel to Kakashi with the campfire slightly eclipsing her from his position, Kakashi decided he'd break the silence.
"Ah, you got up before me, 'was wondering why it was cold all of a sudden."
"Breakfast—I got you a choice between at least seven different fruits."
Ooh.
So, Kakashi dressed in only his undergarment stood up and calmly walked over with a fast stretch of his arms and went over beside Itachi and grabbed a banana and bit into the ripe fruit, still feeling a tenseness come from her despite Itachi doing her best to hide some sort of discomfort.
"Thanks, I don't see where your bento box went."
"…ate it, and I'm not hungry. This is how I'm returning the favor."
Oh.
"You didn't have to…"
"I wanted to, I'm returning a favor and for you senpai, it was a simple task."
"Last night wasn't how you wanted to return the favor?" He brought up, hopefully, this would dislodge some information on why she seemed out of it.
But despite the small fluster on Itachi's face, she didn't seem all that shy about it "Last night was us…finally giving in to desire. I think…I loved it."
"Then it's not awkward for you, what a relief."
Itachi shook her head "We did what we did. I have no shame for it."
But then what was on her mind?
"Do–you regret it?" he sat beside her, their shoulders rubbing against one another and Kakashi shook at her touch.
That's when Itachi gave this look, a mixture of apologetic and reassurance "No. I—no, it was the most fun I've experienced in years." She giggled and her voice was like music "Senpai, you didn't do a single thing wrong."
And almost like she hadn't had that darkened expression she looked normal—well as normal
as the always stoic girl could be.
In short, all Kakashi could gather was that Itachi was hiding something. Which wasn't a surprise because she'd always been hiding something, but between their first time having their moment and this moment, the change was obvious to him she looked like her brain was working on hyperdrive, and she had no intentions of telling him.
Had to have been his imagination, right?
No?
Then she laid her head on his shoulder, her hair overflowing and over his shoulder and he couldn't help but notice how soft and like silk it was…though wet with rainwater, but he didn't mind in the slightest.
Itachi buried her face into his neck and he heard the sigh push from deep within her.
—What was bothering her all of a sudden? There were things Itachi wasn't sharing with him—things about what's bothering her—things about that blood-drenched night. What was it that really went on in that calculative head of hers?
"Hold me..." she whispered, soft and almost desperate, her tone pushed him to do as she said and he pulled her to him, feeling every curve on her body in the process "I just want to spend whatever time I have left with you. I—I'm just sad that this will be over soon. You'll go back to Konoha and myself, I'll go back to my organization, that's simply it. That's it."
But then Kakashi figured that what she said made sense, they lived completely different worlds, however, this feeling kept bouncing around his gut, that what she was saying wasn't the 100% truth.
"I see, do you get along with that ninja? Have you got a new partner?"
Itachi said "We tolerate one another. And no, though I'm told I should hear from them soon."
"Tsk, I bet the pay's good."
In his ear, her words a whisper's pitch "Of course, but there aren't moments like this—nothing beats this."
"Yeah." With his arm around her waist, Kakashi pulled her closer "And I don't think I'll be able to see you for some time. So let's enjoy this."
Itachi shifted in his hold "You're going to be busy? A mission? "
Kakashi only nodded.
Then Itachi seemed to be thinking "You're going to train Sasuke when he becomes a genin."
"Precisely, and if his team passes I won't be able to see you or, well, do any of this." With that Kakashi pulled her even closer, and that's when he could feel her heartbeat.
Itachi stayed silent. The idea of them being absent from one another for an extended amount of time left an empty feeling in his stomach. She turned away from him, looked to the cave ceiling, and without turning to look at him asked "How long? The beginning stages of a genin's training are the most crucial. Sasuke and his team will need all of your time and attention. Tell me…Senpai, how long?"
Oh, the way she said senpai there made him feel weird, maybe he just felt guilty about what he was going to say to her "Seven months and I promise, Itachi, I'll see you again."
Itachi looked him in the eye, no visible emotion on her face, but her eyes twinkled with a weird gloss before nestling her face into his chest "You better, senpai. I don't want this to be our last and final time together, you look so stressed all the time—"
But Kakashi was confident "It won't."
He was stressed sometimes.
And he didn't know when, but Itachi threw herself on top of him, straddling him, leaving Kakashi both impressed and slightly jolted and with both eyes looking directly into him and both their most private parts were definitely rubbin—
"Then, one more time, can we—"
Itachi never finished when he made a sudden movement, but her message was received by Kakashi. What was he supposed to do, deny this amazingly beautiful shinobi who pressed her body so imaginably close to him?
But he didn't say anything, he instead kissed her with ferocity, grabbing lips with his own, admittedly his body just as lustful as it was earlier, and at that point, there was no turning back. His hands neatly rested on her rear-end and pulled her as close as possible, which made Itachi squeak in surprise, but the s-class kunoichi regained her composure and inhaled like she had the most important speech to tell.
"Look, and look me in the eyes, okay? All of your frustration…pain…disappointment…. anger, take it out on me—okay? You don't have to hold back senpai… Do whatever you like to me." she said panting after they both broke their lip lock, her dark eyes staring into his—like he was the only person worth looking at in the world. Wiggling her body, damn well aware of how she was having an effect on him.
-Wait, huh?
Kakashi was happy he had a mask on, for his face might've been red. He was definitely hot.
But he wasn't the one that looked super conflicted. Why was she volunteering to be an outlet for Kakashi's frustrations when it was clear that she was the one in need of comfort?
"Kind of a weird thing to say—I—" but before he could make a complete sentence Itachi slammed her soft lips into his again…and well…Itachi always made great suggestions…so they removed each other's clothing and the rest was history.
Okay!
Everyone waiting outside of the hokage's office, be it shinobi or Konoha's civilian officials, haphazardly dispersed and walked away in fearful surprise when a sudden series of aggressive shouts poured through the door of the sound tight hokage office. Of course, nobody could hear the subtle details, but there was indeed a shouting match going on in the office
Anko could count on her five fingers the number of times Hiruzen-sama had to raise his voice—though of those times every instance had been between both Hiruzen-sama and Danzo-sama, so their friendship—if you could call it that, had a smudge of toxicity in the mix.
It made her wonder as to why those two's conversations always lead down that lane?
Huh, Anko always wanted to get a peek at their little argument. But that'd probably send the hokage's personal anbu into a frantic enraged frenzy.
Instead, she patiently waited at the door, somewhat happy that the argument made most people figure they'd come back at another time because then there was no line to wait on and Anko could for the first time in ages get in and out of the hokage's office without much of a hassle.
And when the door creaked opened to a disgruntled old man with bandages wrapped around his face, brown hair, and a black robe that made him look like some type of hermit, the man's single-eye looked down at her for a second before suddenly two anbu operatives appeared from literally nowhere, causing the village elder to turn in their direction.
"How did it go, Danzo-sama?" one of the masked root shinobi said.
"As expected." Replied Danzo, sighing as he pressed weight on his cane. "Come, 'no place to discuss such matters."
Weird, but Anko didn't really care, Danzo as much as he was a respectable and notable presence in Konoha—didn't hold any significance to her, he didn't write her checks, and he surely didn't do anything of promise.
So Anko didn't really address the older man, yet and simply walked into the office, the third hokage sitting at his desk with his back turned to her, viewing the bleached yellow sunrise through his window and puffing a quick exhale of his pipe.
The cobra mask lay around her neck and she stepped right up to his desk.
"Anko, how was your shift? Naruto didn't give you any trouble, did he?" The old man said, only turning to face her after the words left his lips.
"No, Naruto's no trouble at all, especially with proper… motivation. But he's sleeping now. The boy surely had determination."
Now, Hiruzen-sama didn't need to know that they'd been training for the past 14 hours, nor did he need to know that she injected him with an extremely low potent venom when the boy insisted on more training when it was clearly her time to not only end her shift, but it was way past dawn and dawn was the best time to go forging for those cute slithery fuckers.
What?
Yeah, she did inject a child with just enough of a particular venom to put him to sleep.
But at least, Anko brought him back to bed and kissed his forehead goodnight, for luck or whatever.
She just hoped her drop-in with Hiruzen-sama would go accept her report as fast and normal as possible.
"Has your squad noticed any unusual activity?"
"Unusual? No, everything's been fine!" she beamed a smile, "I told you, nothing or nobody gets past me, my team, and my snakes! You've got not a lick to worry about."
But where normally Hiruzen-sama would laugh with her and probably send her on her way after a quick few exchanges of what they've been doing in their personal life.
Yeah, but, uh….nope.
Today was different.
"Yes quite…Anko, I must ask you something and don't get confused. This is no order from your elderly hokage, this is more of a…favor, yes a favor between comrades."
What? Was this some sort of cool mission?
And the snake specialist blinked a couple of times and then gave her best smile"Of course, Hokage-sama! A thousand times I'll do whatever you need me to do? What is it? You got some evil rogue ninja who started his own criminal syndicate of smuggling narcotics–" then the brunette paused, blinked and thought fondly of the possibility of another S-class mission and she absolutely—positively knew exactly what Hiruzen-sama was going to say next. "You need me. To. Kill. Him, huh!? Well, I say yes—"
"Please Anko, not quite! Stop being foolish, I'm about to give you an extremely dangerous task, there's nothing funny about this ."
Anko calmed herself, but was still excited to know that the hokage was finally recognizing her skill. She immediately bowed like thirty times…rapidly. "Apologies, Hokage-sama. I'm ready, ready to receive my assignment sir." she stood at attention.
"Penguin! Hornet! Take your squads and leave now! Do not return until Anko has left the premises of the building."
And instantaneously like twenty anbu operatives, like swift shadows that if you weren't skilled enough, you would have never noticed the squads were there to begin with.
Finally, they were actually alone.
"This isn't a task I would give to anyone—actually, personally I only want to give it to you because of your highly advanced skills in stealth and deception. Anko, this mission may ask you to go against every moral bone in your body, can I entrust this to you."
Well, she'd already joined Anbu, how could it be any worse?
"I can do it, you already got me curious, so please hokage-sama, let me serve you!"
With a nod, the Sandaime clasped his hands together at his desk.
"I need a shinobi at the forefront and inside the ranks of the foundation, no questions asked. I simply need someone to report on my friend Danzo and what activities he's engaging in that foundation of his."
Root? Spy on Danzo-sama?
Now she really wanted to know what happened between those two! Hiruzen-sama and Danzo-sama must have really gotten into it.
And Anko, who had an open mouth before it flashed to a grin "Of course! What, that sounds like a piece of cake! I never liked Danzo-sama all that much, he could choke on catfish for all I care!"
"Good, you will be taken off the active duty roster for the two weeks that you'll be spending training to pass the initiation—you should have no issue. I've already had Shikaku mimic your handwriting and sent it off to the foundation's recruiters."
"What?! You did that, already? What if I would've…you know, said no? Or had a thing to di?"
"I've been doing this kage business for a long time, I can, for the most part, predict the patterns and responses of most of my shinobi. Don't be surprised…this isn't one for the books, so don't expect any traceable records."
No, she was most definitely surprised. And Anko had no idea what to feel or do.
And so, the third discussed and explained to her the inner workings of her new task and how it weaves into her current duties.
Yes…she was now undercover Anko!
The academy students swelled all around Iruka-sensei, a small circle being produced just in front of the learning establishment, as their chunin-sensei conducted friendly spars between the future ninja.
Sakura Haruno can't remember why she indeed had a crush on Sasuke. To put it frankly, it didn't make sense, it was as if the thought of all the other girls liking him made her brain go stupid and fixate itself on Sasuke. The way she couldn't find a good logical answer for though.
Sure, there was literally no one else worthy of a relationship with the young academy student, but… why was Sasuke deserving?
He was attractive, that much she agreed, self-determined, skilled, and the best student in class for a fact. Certainly, he would graduate as the top of the academy students, even higher than Sakura.
But this—two weeks before graduation, Sakura found herself randomly questioning the insanity of constantly trying to gain the attention of a boy who didn't seem all the bit interested in anyone…or for the sake of the hokage, anything in that matter.
And it was here that she decided that Sasuke Uchiha—and well, boys in general, were overrated.
The air cracked and to Sakura, it sounded like a whip.
Oh yeah, Sakura may have forgotten to mention that said Uchiha was currently soaring with this stupid yellow-haired kid naked Naruto, and typically when Sasuke and Naruto fought the events were pretty one-sided.
Like always, Naruto would charge in.
And Sasuke would knock him flat on his ass, and usually, these spars only last about fifteen seconds.
This day was certainly an abnormality…
The typical events played out, as usual, Iruka would tell the two to make the seal of trust—a bond between comrades, then the two students would stand on opposite sides of the circle created by the students after that Naruto charged Sasuke and with a quick whip of his feet Naruto was sent clumsily into the dirt.
But, no, Naruto never hit the dirt, this time he caught himself, spun himself back to his feet, and in an act that the entirety of the class will forever keep solidified in their memories, landed the best punch to the jaw on an unsuspected Sasuke she had ever seen.
Ino and a squad of cringey fangirls, a clique that Sakura, only mere moments ago, had personally been a part of, cried out in horror at the terrible sight of getting his precious face bashed in and all this by their very own dead-last.
"Tsk, if you keep gonna do the same thing, I'm eventually gonna catch on, duck-head," Naruto said, smugly standing as Iruka-sensei's eyes went wide-mouthed—she could see their sensei's eyes glisten.
Sasuke wiped his mouth and the two circled around the ring, the class of students getting silent, Iruka-sensei just as interested in the outcome as everyone else.
"Oh, I didn't know you had the ability to learn something."
"Yeah I can learn, I can teach too and I'm about to teach you why you don't joke around with Naruto Uzumaki."
"Lame. You landed one hit, don't get a big head!."
"Shut the hell up!"
And then Sasuke swung a haymaker, Naruto blocked and then checked Sasuke with a face nudged of his hand and then Naruto tried to take a swipe under his feet, Sasuke jumped a small distance and his kick cracked Naruto right in the nose, drawing blood and causing Naruto to
Sakura frowned, as of only a few minutes ago, Sakura would have certainly been cheering on the sole Uchiha. But, the conclusion she found herself coming to—that Sasuke Uchiha wasn't some immortal, amazing Goddess made her want to cheer on neither party. And for the first time in her years at the academy, Sakura was finally looking at herself from an external critical lens.
Was she becoming a shinobi just because of one kid? That was stupid.
Punch!
They kept hitting one another, Naruto's attacks more heavy and brute, while Sasuke's were precise and accurate, then exchanged blows and scuffed up one another's faces as kicks and punches flew. In particular, after Sasuke had kicked Naruto in the jaw with one of the most rage-filled kicks she'd seen come from the Uchiha, Naruto immediately speared Sasuke with speeds that nobody present (except for well, Iruka-sensei and his smile), knew Naruto was even remotely capable of doing. Sasuke was caught off guard, but there on the ground, their skillful battle transitioned into a brawl on the ground where they rolled around and began beating the living shit at one another, knocking over kids and all.
"Sasuke, Naruto!" Iruka-sensei ran out, dropping his hands onto the boy's collar as he attempted to pull a furious Naruto and irritated Sasuke from one another as their punches kept connecting and doing damage—strangely not one of them attempted to dodge and was more interested in harming the other.
They left that battle a draw.
What the hell had just happened?
It was then that Sakura realized just how stupid she had been in the past.
And well…
Why was she even trying to be shinobi?
And this question echoed throughout her dome, even after Iruka had called out Sakura and Hinata's names.
After they'd already touched fingers and the reality of their fight finally set in.
Whoosh!
Sakura barely dodged a kick that brushed her right Cheek, right before a quick flat palm struck Sakura in the chest like a runaway horse-drawn carriage.
Gasp! Her lungs forcefully expelled all the air within and Sakura hit the ground on her back. The match only lasted a few seconds.
She wasn't even that good with taijutsu…and had she versed Sasuke she was sure it would've been worse.
Hell, even Naruto would have wombo-combed her.
And Sakura lay there with the milliseconds ticking and after a few moments of Sakura marinating in her own irritated disillusion, a pale hand came down right in her face, Hinata bit her lip nervously, before a benevolent grin molded around her "Sakura-chan…"
Sakura was a useless student, and she couldn't find a reason to continue her line of work. And only two weeks before graduation.
With a firm grasp, Hinata helped the pinket to her feet.
And Sakura in her shame could only spare Hinata two words "Thank you."
Before she returned back into the huddle, with Iruka-sensei watching Sakura the entire time, she could see he wanted to talk to her, but his priorities were of course the rest of the class.
Was she even fit to be a shinobi?
So she remained silent and watched in amazement as Shikamaru and Shino began their battle.
The marketplace couldn't have been more packed than this afternoon. Kids kept cutting him off, some people would ask if he was that shinobi that used to protect the Yondaime, and some freaking snot-nosed kid kept pelting rocks at him from behind to see if Genma would dodge. And the answer was: duh. It would be nice if their parents and or guardians could keep a hold of their children—though, that really was a normal day in the marketplace for Genma at least.
Now it was definitely Genma's day off, that's why he had the brown bag and groceries and everything, so when Hayate started calling after Genma in the middle of the marketplace, where all eyes could look at them, he was hoping that he would suggest they go to a bar or something.
"Hayate…" Genma switched the senbon between his lips "Found a new bar? Or is there some new movie you want to force me to watch?"
Hayate looked like he'd just smoked a bunch of unmentionable narcotics, but that wasn't really his thing. He adjusted his headband and coughed into his hand "I—I wanted to talk to you…and excuse me for being selfish."
Well, Genma wasn't too busy, he'd do anything for a friend "What's up."
"Should I be worried…?"
Genma wanted to scratch his head "You're gonna have to get specific."
"You've heard about Yugao finally being released…"
"Yeah, you've finally admitted that you're dating. Congrats. Heard your relationship has never been better, at least that's what you told me."
"That's the thing…everything's been—" Hayate almost choked then cleared his throat "Amazing. Beautiful."
"Okay, I understand, just don't get all mushy on me—especially in front of these families."
"I'm sorry, I've just been thinking. What sort of emotional turmoil did Itachi put her through for her to outright express her every emotion to me the moment she woke?"
Genma shook his head, Itachi Uchiha was known for her brutality and Genma truly prayed for anyone caught in a genjutsu by that Kunoichi.
"Man, she may have been tortured and probably just doesn't want to even share what she saw—right? She probably doesn't want to worry you."
"Well, yeah… she would try to protect me. But she has to let me protect her too." Hayate palmed his hand to his chest.
And suddenly Genma felt terrible for Yugao "And if it made her realize how short the life of a ninja is, then it also made her realize how much she actually cares for you."
"I would never want it this way, I can't even imagine what she went through."
"Neither could I…some scary people out there."
"And that's what I want to talk about—what worries me. We're not strong enough to beat foes like that—to take her on you have to be up there with Might Guy. Which is why I want to suggest this..."
Genma already knew where he was going with this and it just made him roll his eyes, as if he wasn't busy enough "Training…you want to start training."
"Exactly! I want us to train! Myself so I can protect Yugao" Hayate couldn't hold back a cough "And finally, we can kill Itachi for what she did to her."
Huh? Hayate was officially a nutcase.
"Kill Itachi? You want us to do what? Oh yeah, one of the top ten criminals listed in the bingo book…"
"I know it sounds like we're out of our league, but that's the mentality of a quitter—I don't want to be stagnant, I can't just let her get away with what she did to Yugao!"
Genma could understand his desire for revenge, and as Hayate's long-time friend he gave a defeated sigh "Okay, I'll train more with you…but if you think we're doing one of those wild unauthorized missions like back in our chunin days, then you're smoking some good shit, because if you're really suggesting what I think you are, you're trying to kill yourself."
And that was enough to satisfy Hayate and he let out a cough"Have some faith, we're not kids anymore. I've read the Nidaime's manuscript: a thousand ways to defeat an Uchiha!"
And Genma wished those words had been more reassuring, but considering that Hayate wasn't the second hokage or someone of great power, killing this particular Uchiha wasn't as simple as one, two, three…
On a small cobblestone bridge where the land of fire and the land of Earth were separated by a huge lake, Itachi's client a short brown-haired middle-aged man who simply went by the name of Gato paced beside her, an obsidian briefcase hung gripped in his right hand and, despite the smile on his face as he stared at the opposing businessman, whom of which hired maybe 7 ninja to Gato's one, Itachi could feel the hammer of his heartbeat change. It became faster… less rhythmic.
And as he was panicking, Itachi had to admit that her thoughts weren't all that together nor were they appropriate. Thinking about Kakashi-senpai and their moments together at any part of her day was proving to be a distraction.
She couldn't get it out of her head.
She couldn't get him out of her head.
Itachi had a task, a mission to complete as a professional, and her mind wandering about did not help.
But how could she blow him out of her mind? Itachi had learned a horrible truth about someone from his past and his mental state already worried her. Now if he suddenly discovered that Obito was actually the leader of the Akatsuki, she doesn't know how he'd respond, though he'd probably recluse himself even further—maybe even from her.
At least they'd had their passionate moment together…twice. Itachi doubled her sexual experiences twice in one day and with the freaking shinobi she was convinced was the only shinobi for her. The only person she would ever be 'stress relief' for, that was sure
It had been a good week and counting since she last saw him and already that lonely-empty feeling had returned to her gut.
When the two illegal businessmen met they just stood for a moment, their shinobi were calm and bored looking even, while Itachi was the same, most recognized her off of her face alone, which meant, the well-informed usually did well to stay far out of her way.
Their businessman was much taller, though he certainly had the cigar thing going, with a gray tux and thankfully no hat, just a flat clean fade.
You could hear the birds calling to each other.
"Those delays were killing me, can't say I've ever had my hands on these goods, Gato how did you come by these?" Were the first words of the big man on the buyer's side.
Gato smirked and tilted his head "I keep my shoes next to my designer watches, that's why I'm lucky."
"Can we get a look?"
And Gato nodded, his devious smirk never leaving his face proving that Gato was definitely the sort of person she disliked. He had all the traits that Itachi could also find in someone like Orochimaru and selfishness was at the top of that list.
When the briefcase was clicked open, the buyer could only look on in awe and joy, within the briefcase, strapped and cushioned laid glass jar with a preservative liquid with a green tint, within that liquid gently floated two eyes with paled pupils, that Itachi knew well enough to belong to the Hyuga.
This grey-suited man let out a long whistle "…I've never been in possession of the byakugan."
"For the agreed-upon price, it's yours," Gato said.
"Don't smudge my name, here look." And at that moment the buyer opened his briefcase and they all were exposed to the glory of millions of Ryo, "60 million."
"Right…right, all in order. And I take it you're impressed with the product?"
"It's authentic, yes?" he nodded to some shinobi in the back, sensory ninja perhaps.
"Now you're blowing on my good name, of course, it is!"
And with that the two businessmen exchanged briefcases and were about to head out back on their own merry ways, but just as they attempted to cross back to their side of the bridge, Itachi and Gato had themselves blocked in by a squad of rogues, Itachi couldn't help but suspect had been with their buyer.
"You sure I shouldn't have gone with that other group, the one that was cheaper and offered more men?"
"Positive."
Water splashed below and before anyone could say anything Itachi withdrew her kunai, hopefully, that would show the present ninja that Itachi wasn't going to run, but apparently, these shinobi were committed.
"That dirty conmen, at least have the balls to betray me when I'm in your face!"
"If you leave now I won't take your lives," Itachi explained.
One of the rogues began talking "Gato doesn't leave this bridge, and you if you must protect hi—"
But Itachi didn't care for any speeches, saw an opening, and used her kunai to slash open his chest, the rogue fell leaving his friends to band together.
"Shit! He's dead, hurry and kill Gato and run!"
There were possibly seven remaining ninja and all of them must've been horribly informed because all of them made the mistake of looking Itachi directly in the eyes while her sharingan was activated and with her genjutsu she simply stopped their hearts.
But see, that wasn't enough, their targets needed to be eliminated. Without wasting time Itachi weaved a hand signal, left a shadow clone with Gato, and began sprinting across the bridge. Of course, the men would be far down the road, but they couldn't have made it that far with a non-shinobi among them. And of course, Itachi was right as she jumped to the trees above and found that gray suit-wearing businessman, shinobi calmly escorting him, unbeknownst of Itachi's presence.
Without wasting any time, Itachi fell from the sky, flipped her kunai around by its ring, and lodged the weapon directly into the businessman's chest.
Another death and the killing didn't seem slow over yet, the ninja were eager to fight coming at her with shuriken and someone tried to wrap a Kusarigama around her, but Itachi slipped through and ripped open a kunoichi's throat instead.
All eager opponents however were turned into either corpses or shivering ninja no longer ready to take on the Uchiha and some contemplating retreat.
But it was all too late when a huge white bandaged sword wrapped around the air with a swish and turned on a dime like a boomerang, ripping through all that stood in its path, blood painting the landscape, leaving Itachi to just watch the spectacle, not sure what to make of it but eventually, it was silent as all the screaming ceased.
All targets met a painful end, and with it, Itachi walked over and picked up the briefcase containing the byakugan.
But for what it was worth, Itachi didn't expect there to be assistance, not from the enormous blue-skinned, gilled man who caught the weapon while on the branch of a tree, before the shinobi decided to appear in front of Itachi, his smile all teeth and no lips.
Sure, Pain had told Itachi that she'd be getting her teammate at some point that month, but the specifics were odd and vague.
"Hey, from today on I'll be your teammate. I used to be one of the seven swordsmen of the mist, Kisame Hoshigaki. And you're Itachi Uchiha, the clan killer." That made her hand twitch a movement that didn't go unnoticed by Kisame "A loner and a shinobi known for having deadly precision. That's why I want to be on a squad with you."
She looked him over, unimpressed but well aware that he was a capable ninja.
"You think you know me."
"I know the face of someone spiraling through despair."
"And what is it, Kiri couldn't accept you so you ran to the Akatsuki."
A bulge of his eyes told her that she'd struck a nerve, and he pointed his weapon at an unmoving Itachi.
"That's a bold statement, and maybe it would be right looking outwards in. But even so, you know little about me too. When there is something precious to protect and preserve—a shinobi's life is irrelevant in the matter."
With a flick of her sharingan Itachi replied "That's why you killed your comrades, you considered the mission more precious than their lives."
Almost similar to Itachi's situation.
That seemed to catch Kisame off guard, but the shark-looking man only smiled before changing the subject "C'mon, we should return to our client. But how about it, let's be friends. There isn't any reason we shouldn't be friends and enjoy ourselves in this clustered shit of a world."
That Itachi could agree with, at least she would no longer be traveling alone, no matter who it was.
And when they returned to Gato, he was practically shaking next to Itachi's clone.
"Who's that?!" Gato asked when Itachi and Kisame casually walked right up to him, no sense of personal space from either of them…admittedly.
"Oh, where're my manners? Kisame Hoshigaki, I'll be helping Itachi finish the mission."
Her clone poofed away, Gato scratched his head before he looked at the briefcase in Itachi's hand and his eyes dilated "You got the eyes back! Hey, I just doubled my earnings—all the money in this briefcase and I can still sell the byakugan!"
The drug lord or—whatever you called him was much too giddy for Itachi's liking. But as much as it would've been satisfying to knock him over the head with the back of her kunai, they had a mission to complete. And then from there, she would start her analysis of Kisame Hoshigaki and hopefully see what information she could send back to Jiraiya-sama.
"I hope you're not the type to annoy me—client or not. I have no qualms against taking the limb of an irritating man." Kisame suddenly told Gato.
"Of course not! I'm a simple businessman and will pay the Akatsuki the presented price." Gato fixed his shades and gave his best smile.
"Well you're over here talking about double profit, but I didn't hear you talking about doubling our profit." Kisame pointed Samehada at both himself and Itachi.
The way Kisame acted, it sort of reminded her of Juzo—which she guessed made sense because of their relation, though nonetheless, it made her grin.
Gato waved his hand "I-if that's what you want—"
"It is. So say…why don't you do that little favor for us and things stay peachy?"
Gato was in complete pander mode and Kisame took full advantage of that, making the much smaller drug lord tremble in his shoes. It was enough to make Itachi smile, her client had probably done something much similar before—for Gato was a man known for his cruelty.
"Of course, anything for the ones who saved my life! We're partners!" The short man, obviously uneasy, fixed his glasses.
"Ex-actly." Kisame said.
And maybe Kisame and Itachi would actually make quite the duo.
—Kakashi had found himself at Konoha's grand library yet again, the contents of this scroll still a mystery and yes, while there he certainly looked for more information on the Uchiha massacre and came up with nothing.
As a matter of fact, his entire time in the library was spent uselessly searching for information that Konoha just didn't seem too interested in sharing with the public. Nor was there anything on the scroll that clearly read plasma.
And it didn't make his late evening any better that he just so happened to bump into Anko on his way out.
Who for the first time, genuinely seemed surprised to see Kakashi.
"Huh, the library? I thought you only read erotica."
The copy-ninja sniffled at her greeting "Oh, yeah, hey, it's good to see you too Anko."
"What? Have you found some new series or something—something you want to share maybe?" Anko slowly inched to his side, then slightly nudged him with her elbow.
"No, I'm actually doing research, as crazy as that sounds."
"What? You need more jutsu to steal?"
Steal? Did she really have to put it like that?
"No…I don't typically copy jutsu that way. What's really going on is that I've found—or rather was given this scroll and see, I can't exactly get it open, the seal's written in some sort of dialect, it might be ancient Uzumaki—I asked a professional."
Partially true, he was also looking into all public information on Itachi Uchiha.
"Ancient Uzumaki? Ooohh, you mind if I can let see?!"
"You won't be able to read it."
"Just let me see it! You know I've always had a thing for sealing. Why do you think hokage-sama has my squad protecting Naruto-kun?"
Seeing that it would be no harm showing Anko the scroll, he withdrew the black object, they could only read the clear printed writing: Plasma—the rest might as well have been scribble-scrabble.
And when Kakashi handed the scroll over to Anko, she looked over the item, her eyes glowing with parted lips. Then she smiled and scratched her nose "I have not a single clue what the rest of this scroll says."
"Yeah, nobody does." Kakashi gently took the scroll back into his possession.
"It might be wise to bring to anbu, but then the scroll would be given to their forensic team and we'll probably never be told the contents."
"Shit, we definitely want to see what's inside, that's for sure. If hokage-sama hands the stuff off to Anbu, nobody gets to." Anko grabbed her chin "But certainly Jiraiya-sama has seen his fair share of ancient language!"
"If I can get a hold of him for a few moments. But, he isn't even around to talk about his upcoming sequel to Icha Icha Paradise's hiatus!"
"Oh, no! Not your erotic fiction! Psst. Why not dabble in the real thing—you know, be with a physical woman!?"
Well, he wasn't really sure if she was his woman, because Itachi was her own person, so the kid in Kakashi wanted to shove the fact that he had been with a physical woman. But then, she would ask too many questions and his relationship with Itachi might end up on the forefront.
"I would, but there's no woman who would want to bear my insanity. Plus, I like my solitude." he lied.
And Anko put her hands on her hips. "Maybe I can take up that challenge. Don't you think we—you know—would make an awesome pair? Think…the copy ninja and the alluring venom, together!"
And Kakashi literally choked on his own saliva, because she was freaking insane herself. Sure, Anko was a beautiful and powerful kunoichi, but Kakashi had his interests with someone else.
In addition, sometimes Anko could be plain old despotic and Kakashi would rather deal with someone who didn't constantly leave, as Anko referred to them, non-lethal venomous snakes in his freaking bedsheets. And also, perhaps someone who didn't feel the need to make a scene right in front of the public library. Kakashi had to thank God that only a minor amount of people were out at that time of the evening.
Not to bash her or anything.
"Ah, Look, great offer, but—"
Anko laughed it off before he could finish, "I'm pulling your leg! You're so serious sometimes."
Well no—it's just that Kakashi had a thing with a freaking S-class criminal.
Kakashi then said "And you, what has you heading to the library at this time of night?"
Now, the joyful expression that'd been across Anko's face disappeared like a firefly falling into an abyss.
"I—I've decided to join root!" And then another grin, but it was a forced grin and…something else.
"Root?!" See, Kakashi's free eye didn't blink.
Anko continued, suddenly playing with a snake, she probably had hidden in her sleeves "I want to do research on the foundation's history."
Since when has Anko been interested in the foundation? Hell, Kakashi wouldn't suggest anyone work for the foundation and Danzo, hell, he suspected the foundation and Danzo's corrupt ass were responsible for attacking both Guy and himself. Kakashi couldn't name one good thing that has ever come from Danzo and the foundation.
"But why the foundation, isn't serving under hokage-sama just as rewarding?"
" 'Heard the foundation will give me a better challenge and hey, maybe I'll turn out a little more like you." Anko said.
"You wouldn't want that." Kakashi said blandly without further explanation.
But then Anko laughed "Kakashi Hatake—do I sense that you're worried about me? Ha, here I thought you didn't care about anything!"
"I just know you personally wouldn't want to go down that road."
"Ooohh, sounds like you're speaking from experience."
Kakashi didn't say anything to that, he had in fact worked under Danzo for a short period of time, this was during a time in Kakashi's life that he would much rather forget. He just prayed that Minato-sensei and Kushina-sama forgive him.
So, Anko took his silence as a yes, "Then maybe you could…you know, tell me about Danzo-sama. What's he like? Mmmm…. some particular habits that he's into…maybe some secrets, I. Don't. Know…"
"He's old and radical. Not much to tell you, he was never personal with anyone. I didn't work under him for too long…"
"Right…he's not the type of person to want that sorta stigma."
Man, she was really serious about joining the foundation…he didn't like it. But who was he to decide people's life choices?
"And Danzo's not the same type of leader as Hiruzen-sama—Danzo's faction of anbu is a—well, a different place from the typical assignments given to you and your squad of anbu. Not your typical 'go kill this governor and come back'. "
And it would probably be more on the lines of 'go kill this governor, burn and pillage this town and then come back'.
A single one of Anko's eyebrows twitched "So? I can handle anything thrown at me."
"I don't doubt that. Just a fair warning…"
"The caring Kakashi." She did that little thing that some girls do with their eyelashes… "You know, I know a thing or two about torture."
Unfortunately, the way she said it was sort of creepy, along with the fact that she was no longer grinning and had the greatest deadpan.
Wait, did Anko specialize in torture?
It was then that Kakashi remembered that Anko was most certainly one of Orochimaru's late experiments—something she made sure to never bring up.
Until now apparently…
"Ah, I didn't mean it like that," Kakashi said.
Anko brushed her hand through her hair. "So anything Danzo-sama throws at me will be a piece of cake."
Welp, the conversation took a dive for the worse…but he figured that was just a good way to look at a horrible situation.
He whispered "I—then all I can do is support you. But heed my warning, Danzo is not a man that needs to be followed."
And then something flashed in Anko's eyes, like there was some information that the snake specialist just couldn't or didn't want to tell him. He couldn't place his finger on it, but she had some sort of ulterior motive and it made Kakashi rethink his statements.
Strange things kept bumping into Kakashi around every corner and he couldn't help but get this shiver-inducing feeling that something terrible was brewing. Maybe Itachi had sensed the same thing, that would explain her dampened mood the last time they were together?
Anko looked up to the evening sky, decorated with constellations and whatever else was up there, "Good to know, so the rumors are partially true. Danzo-sama's a plain old asshole. No wonder sensei liked him so much." Anko then looked Kakashi in the eyes, determined like a rogue tidal wave "That's fine, doesn't change a damn thing. The foundation…yeah, that's the next step in my shinobi journey, and I'm gonna topple that place in one gulp, I'll be the best kunoichi in that damned organization."
Kakashi didn't doubt that, but the moral compass of that old rag was way more radical than any shinobi Kakashi has ever met in Konoha, he just hoped that she wouldn't have any major changes to her personality, despite Anko being…well, Anko, he wouldn't change the way she currently was for anything.
