6 Unlucky In Love
November crept by as Maddie and Jack added to their arsenal. Both of them were determined to deal with the rising ghostly threat. Ever since the portal started working ghosts had been popping up with a greater frequency. She shook her head going over the files on her computer. They were still sparse, mostly made up of witness testimony from those who had seen the ghosts. So far there was only one file that had more than one page. The Ghost Girl. No one seemed to know who she was, who she had been rather. She was powerful though, seeming to toss back other ghosts who tried to take over Amity. It was worrying. Ghosts were territorial, haunting places they once lived, she knew that but the Ghost Girl seemed different. It bothered her how powerful the Ghost Girl seemed to be. But that wasn't the only thing bothering her these days.
Jazz had taken a liking to a boy a few years too old for her who Maddie just didn't like. She couldn't quite put her finger on why she didn't like the boy but it seemed for once Dani shared her mother's opinion, even getting caught spying on the two of them. Maddie couldn't even be mad. At least now she was sure that Dani still cared, she hadn't been so sure. Lately Dani seemed to have stopped caring about many of her old hobbies. A model rocket sat unfinished on her project table, gathering dust. It was unlike Dani. Jack had noticed too but was proud of Dani for telling them about Jazz still meeting up with Johnny after they specifically told her not to. Jack was a wonderful man but maybe not the most observant. He hadn't really noticed the change in Dani over the last few months. He was currently making her a jumpsuit just for her.
Maddie had to admit that Dani was more like her father than she'd ever admitted. They were both very protective of their family and friends. She was fantastic at taking things apart and putting them back together, though her dedication to the second was sometimes questionable. Maddie still remembered the time when Dani was seven and took apart the microwave, then forgot to put it back together. Maddie shook her head slightly, unable to hide her smile as she looked over her youngest daughter.
"Gone, and he won't be coming back." Dani stated flexing her fist. Jack's eyebrows shot up.
"You decked him?" He sounded both surprised and a little proud. "But we brought the bat, with the word Fenton on it." He pouted slightly but Maddie leaned on the bat in question with a grin.
"Aw, Jack, she's like a little you!" She said making Dani blush bright red. Jack laughed pulling Dani into a hug. The three of them headed back to FentonWorks. Jazz was waiting for them, slightly dazed in the kitchen. She spotted Dani and pulled her into a hug. Maddie and Jack sat Jazz down, Dani hanging out at the table munching on a few cookies Jack had given her from his secret stash.
"Honestly it's really romantic that he would sneak in just to see you, but you still can't ever see him again." Maddie said patting Jazz on the shoulder.
"I told you that punk was no good." Jack and Dani said at the same time, Dani going bright red. Maddie and Jazz laughed, Jazz standing from her chair.
"You did, you both did, but you did first." Jazz said hugging Dani who grinned lightly.
Jazz honestly didn't remember most of this week. Everything got a little fuzzy after she nearly got hit by the roller coaster car. She clearly remembered Johnny threatening Dani, turned out he was a ghost, something Jazz hadn't realized until his sentient shadow dropped a cabinet on Dani. Jazz didn't remember much after that until Johnny left, chasing Dani, well ghost Dani. She'd left the things Johnny had given her in the lab so she headed down the stairs to take care of it. She heard someone in the room and peeked around the corner. Dani was in the lab, currently transformed. She'd just pushed the cabinet back into place. She grinned, landing and changing back into herself before stretching and picking up the jacket and scarf on the floor. She unclipped the Fenton Thermos from her belt loop and twisted it into the panel that released its contents back into the ghost zone. The portal door opened, Johnny's shadow passing through the entrance. Dani tossed the things Johnny had given Jazz into the portal. She pulled the ring he'd tried to give her out of her pocket and threw that in too. She sighed as the portal closed. Jazz hurried back up the stairs before Dani could catch her snooping. Jazz smiled to herself, it was good to know her sister was looking out for her, she'd have to find a way to look out for Dani in return.
A few days passed in sweet peace. Dani really should have expected that it wouldn't last. But it was nice, even if she ended up wearing the jumpsuit her father gifted her to school so she didn't hurt his feelings. She almost cried with joy when Lancer dress coded her. She had a feeling he could tell how uncomfortable the suit made her, partially just because of the nature of the clothing and partially because she was worried someone would connect the dots between her and the Ghost Girl. Either way she was sent home to change and decided it wasn't a good idea to wear her jump suit to school again. Little did she know her problems were just beginning. She never saw the invasion coming, nor did she have any idea where Walker's goons were coming from. She had the Fenton Portal on lockdown, it didn't make sense. But the ghosts were all over town by the time they made their presence known. Everyone was panicking. The news had an ongoing Ghost Watch. The Red Hunter had been seen running around town like mad gunning down any ghost in his path. But since no one could get a hold of the Hunter the town turned to Dani's parents. They were running themselves ragged setting up anti-ghost measures. It made Dani nervous, especially when the students were called into the auditorium to hear a presentation on ghost safety. Dani rolled her eyes at Jazz and caught Vince's eye. He looked bone tired and the invasion had only been going on for a day or so. Dani shook her head, turning her attention to the stage, where the mayor was readying his cue cards.
