Dev was in the group of cops who hadn't gone to the show, about twelve people in the precinct had declined the invitation. So he was one of the first on the scene when the train pulled to a stop. Pulling his sidearm he followed Officer Sie, who had the lead. But as Sie went to slam open the door to the caboose Dev heard a thud from the next car over. He tapped West on the shoulder and nodded to the other train car. She nodded and followed him. He opened the door and frowned there was no one here. He kept his sidearm at the ready though, the train car was dark. It looked like it might be Freakshow's room on the train. The sound of something shifting to his left was like the crack of gunfire in the silent room. He turned, keeping his sidearm up. A large cabinet sat there, one of the doors slightly ajar. He glanced at West who nodded slightly. Stepping up to the cabinet Dev toed the door all the way open. He gasped stowing his sidearm as he spotted what was inside the cabinet.
Black hair fell loose around her tired face. She looked completely exhausted deep shadows like bruises under her eyes. Her bright blue eyes widened slightly at the sight of him. She was tied at the wrists and ankles, a gag stuffed in her mouth. Dev swore kneeling down in front of her. He carefully pulled the gag out of her mouth and began to search for the end of the rope so he could untie her. He spoke as he did.
"You're gonna be ok Miss Fenton." He reassured. West swore, ducking out of the train car to fetch help. Dev pulled his pocket knife out of his jacket, he couldn't find an end to the ropes so he sliced through them instead. "Can you stand?" He asked looking Dani back in her face. Her bright blue eyes were closed. She had passed out. He swore. Tucking away his pocket knife he carefully lifted Dani into his arms. It was worryingly easy, she was far too light, weighing maybe half of what he'd have expected. He rushed out of the train car.
"Call an ambulance!" He demanded as several of the other officers gasped at the teen in his arms. Dev checked Dani's pulse as Sie slapped a pair of cuffs on Freakshow who was denying ever having seen the missing teen before. His heart skipped a beat as for a second he couldn't find a pulse but then blessedly it beat against his fingers, low and slow but there. Several civilian cars pulled up to the scene, mostly the officers who'd been at the show, and the captain ran to Dev. Sie was busy loading Freakshow into the back of the patrol car. The captain took one look at Dani and swore.
"Fucking hell. I thought we searched this place." He said shaking his head.
"We did, we also didn't find the literal train car full of loot either." Dev pointed out. He lowered his voice, looking around. "When we searched this place that train car was empty. And the ropes he had her tied up with, they were one solid piece, we also haven't found any of his cast at all. They're just gone." Dev pointed out emphasizing his words in hopes that the captain would catch his meaning. The soft swear he let out told Dev he'd gotten his point across.
"You think he was working with ghosts." Dev nodded as the ambulance sirens heralded their approach. They weren't alone though, several more civilian vehicles had arrived, including the bright silver monstrosity the Fentons called the GAV. The captain swore again.
"I'll head off her parents, have them meet us at the hospital, instead of making a scene here." He said taking off to head off Jack and Maddie Fenton who hadn't spotted Dani in Dev's arms yet. Dev nodded as the ambulance pulled up to them the back doors slamming open. Two EMTs hopped out of the back of the ambulance just as two teens shoved their way through the crowd. Dev recognized them as Tanya Foley and Sam Manson and they spotted Dani as he set her down on the stretcher. They rushed up to her.
"Dani!" Sam called out, but the girl gave no response. Tanya burst into tears. Dev took control of the situation.
"Ok we don't have time for this, we need to get her to the hospital." Both teens glared at him looking mutinous. He turned to the EMT, Sam and Tanya had known Dani was missing before any of them and Sam had been reprimanded on record for trying to sneak into Circus Gothica a few times over the last week. "He rides in the front," he said pointing at Sam, "she rides in the back with us." He said pointing to Tanya. The EMT rolled her eyes but nodded as she and her partner loaded the stretcher up into the ambulance. Dev held out a hand to Tanya and helped her up into the back of the ambulance. The EMT had to work around them as Tanya slipped her hand into Dani's. The EMT let out a sigh. She tapped the window between the front cab and the back.
"You can turn off the siren she's stable." Dev let out a breath as Tanya hiccuped. They pulled up to the hospital and were met by Angelica Foley at the head of a few nurses. Apparently the captain had called ahead. She nodded to Dev as they wheeled Dani inside. Sam and Tanya stayed behind Dev frowned at them.
"How did you hear about what was happening?" He asked straight out. Both of them winced looking at Dev. They were really bad at lying. Dev glanced between the two of them. "You two knew where she was." He said, no hint of question in his voice. Neither of them answered him. Before he could question them more the GAV arrived Jack and Maddie sweeping up to Dev.
"You found Dani?"
"Where is she! Is she ok!" In the confusion both teens slipped away.
Sam swore under his breath. Tanya laid a hand on his shoulder.
"It's ok, she's gonna be ok." Tanya reassured him. He frowned.
"But what if they figure out she's…" Half dead, a ghost, has glowing blood. All his concerns flowed through him. Tanya shook her head.
"We shouldn't have to worry about it. I brought something I've been working on for a while now with me. We have at least six hours of battery life before it dies and her vitals dip back to their regular area, which probably isn't great for normal people." Tanya said with a sigh. Sam pulled her into a hug.
"You're a fucking genius." He said shaking, they held on to each other for a moment. Everything that had happened in the last few days crashed over them and Sam felt a damp spot growing on his shirt from where Tanya was crying. He was crying too, stress from being unable to help his missing and mind controlled friend over the last five days and falling off the train, unsure if he would be caught. He wrapped his arms a bit tighter around Tanya, glad they had all made it through this alive, or as alive as any of them were to begin with.
