Author's Note: I own nothing. This will likely be the last chapter of this one.

32 Jurisdiction

Dev frowned at his screen. He was processing the kidnapping case. They'd gotten lucky, Dani had been found safe and sound but the case was weirder than even Amity was used to. For one thing, none of Freakshow's cast actually legally existed. There was no record of them on any legal database that he could access. This just gave credit to Dev's idea that Freakshow had been working with ghosts. But what didn't make sense was that no ghost had tried to break him out. They'd been watching him around the clock, with ghost weapons they'd been given by the Fentons, who were more than happy to help in any way they could.

Dani remembered nothing from her captivity, a sure sign of possession but Angelica had shared some concerns with him. She'd told him about her possessed coworker, Flo who she'd been forced to leave alone with Dani for about ten minutes. But Dani had improved after that, showing no further signs of possession. Her next blood sample came back completely normal, completely free of ectoplasm. They hadn't thought to do blood tests on the other possession victims, so they had no way of knowing if that was a regular symptom. Dev shook his head again reaching for his coffee. But before he could even pick it up the door to his office opened and the Captain stepped in.

"Wulfric. Need to see you in my office, now." Dev frowned, why couldn't the captain just tell him what was happening here? He realized why when he stepped into the office. Two men in white suits stood in the room, they wore their sunglasses inside as well which was a little odd. The captain sat back down in his chair.

"Officer Wulfric, these are Agents O and K of the Guys in white." Neither of them moved to greet him. "They'll be taking over the Freakshow case from here. Nothing we can do about it, government says they have jurisdiction on this case." Dev could hear the slight resentment in the captains voice. "All files pertaining to the Freakshow Case are to be handed over to them, as soon as possible. Please go gather those files for us." Dev nodded slipping back out of the office. He frowned as he began to gather the files. Something here was fishy. He frowned as he made to move Dani's file into the mass of files. The guys in white were somewhat notorious for taking things out of context and massively overreacting. They'd been in the bunch chasing the reward money that had briefly been offered for Phantom's capture. Dev glanced up making sure he was alone and opened Dani's file quickly deleting the small note he'd made about the short lived ectoplasmic contamination. The last thing that poor kid needed right now was to be interrogated by government stooges. He saved the file and placed it in the mass of files downloading them all to a USB and heading back into the Captain's office. He handed over the USB and watched as the agents escorted Freakshow out of the precinct. He shook his head heading back into his office to close out the files. The case was out of their hands. He shivered lightly as he closed his office door. Was it colder in here than it usually was? He frowned.

"You need to stop." He nearly jumped out of his skin as he looked up. A young girl floated near the ceiling. Just as Angelica described she couldn't have been older than sixteen. She looked tired, there were bags under her eyes, a deep green unlike the usual eyebags a human would get. Her eyes were a swirling toxic green and her silvery white hair floated around in its braid. She was wearing what might have been a hazmat suit, but Dev would almost call it closer to the jumpsuits the Fenton's wore. He blinked up at her for a moment before he processed what she'd said.

"Stop what?" He asked, keeping his hands away from his sidearm. He wasn't sure if she'd attack or not, she'd been a bit unpredictable after all.

"Stop looking for me." She clarified.

"I can't stop looking, not after everything that's happened." She rolled her eyes at him, crossing her arms. He spoke again before she had a chance. "Why did you take city hall hostage?" He asked it outright, risks be damned, he had to know. She frowned at him.

"I didn't. The mayor was possessed by a ghost trying to make my… afterlife a living hell. Well… you get what I mean." She floundered. He nodded sitting down in his chair. He was starting to get a neck ache from looking up at her.

"That's sort of what I figured happened." She blinked at him, a bit startled. "He had all the symptoms of someone suffering from possession. The thefts, we found it all at the circus. What was that about?" Phantom grimaced.

"He had something he used to control ghosts, it's gone now though. It basically acted like possession for ghosts. Not a pleasant experience I'll tell you that much." She said with a sigh. "Now, are you gonna stop looking for me?"

"No."

"Why not! You know what's going on now, leave it alone!" She demanded. Dev shook his head.

"There's a dead kid wandering around. I can't leave it alone."

"I'm not a kid! I'm fifteen!" She snapped and looked immediately like she regretted she'd even spoken. Fifteen, far too young to be dead.

"I'm not gonna stop looking kid. You deserve justice too." She snorted.

"You're never gonna find me. Give up."

"Not gonna kid."

"Stop calling me kid!"She rubbed her head as if fighting off a headache. She was growing agitated and as she did the temperature in the room dipped further.

"Why wouldn't I be able to find you!" He pushed just a little further.

"Because no one knows I'm dead!" She snapped. Her eyes widened, what little color was in her face drained in moments leaving her nearly translucent. Without another word she vanished. Dev shook his head as the temperature in the room evened back out.

"Fuck." He buried his head in his hands rubbing his temple. This case was getting so much more complicated than he'd ever expected.

Sam and Tanya didn't even flinch when Dani reappeared on her bed, transformed back into herself, buried her head in her pillow and let out a muffled scream of frustration. Tanya didn't even look up from her phone.

"I take it that didn't go well." She commented. Dani spoke into the pillow, it was so muffled they couldn't hear what she was saying. Sam gently prodded her in the shoulder. She grumbled as she flipped over, holding the pillow to her chest instead.

"He's not gonna stop." She stated before once more screaming into the pillow.

"I still don't understand why you tried, it's his job not to stop." Sam pointed out. Dani threw her pillow at him.

"I tried because I don't want Vlad to kill him. That's the last thing I need on my conscious!" She grumbled yawning. Tanya rolled her eyes.

"I still say you should have waited. You're exhausted. Sleep dork." Tanya said finishing up her text to her mother. Dani rolled her eyes and a tap sounded on her door. Maddie stuck her head in the room.

"Oh good you're still awake, I made snacks, the doctor says you should try to eat more regularly." Dani smiled at her mother.

"Thanks mom, we were just gonna go over some of the notes I missed." Dani yawned. Maddie smiled stepping into the room, holding two plates, one quite large with nachos for the girls, the other had a salad for Sam who grinned his thanks. Maddie set the food down on Dani's desk and stepped over to the bed hugging Dani and pressing a kiss to the top of her head.

"I'm glad you're alright sweetie." Dani hugged her mother.

"Me too."
