" W-what? What did I hear? Blimey!"
Kurt sank into his chair. The situation seemed to be completely unrealistic. He was going to be used as a prop. And how did Blaine figure out he was gay? Or was it bait? And a boyfriend? Was Blaine a gay or a bisexual or pansexual or whatever?
Blaine couldn't read Kurt's mind exactly but he could figure out what he was thinking.
"I know it seems to be weird or something, but I need your help."
"Alright. Why should I help? We barely know each other and we agreed on staying together. I am not interested in you."
Kurt didn't bring up the topic of coming out to each other nor did Blaine. Kurt was still shocked- struck. The basic idea of being his boyfriend felt sick in Kurt's stomach or did it?
He always liked Blaine deep inside and he got every indigestion symptom in his abdomen region whenever he threw his sight at Blaine. Blaine was practically begging him through his eyes. Kurt wished he had an eye blinder to block his roomie's honey-filled puppy eyes. Blaine was pretty sure he maintained the lie of being a total bachelor and hiding that he was a divorcee.
But Kurt knew something, something that Blaine wouldn't have dreamt of in a thousand years.
"I am asking you to be my fake boyfriend, Kurt. I just need help as friends."
Blaine knew it wasn't convincing Kurt. And he knew it was completely insane. Kurt shifted himself from the dining chair to the couch in a split second and Blaine followed him. He didn't make eye contact with Blaine. Blaine didn't expect him to. He took the rage time to study every detail of the Irish boy's appearance: The way his lips curved downwards, the squinting cerulean eyes, his slender waist, and the way his leg crossed and perfectly locked over the other, his rosy pink years, perfectly coiffed hair. Blaine felt a tingling sensation in his stomach.
"Say something, Please. Silence is worse than your words."
Blaine could see Kurt gritting his teeth.
"Why should I help you? Do you think I will come with you and make me seem gay?"
Blaine realized he made a big mistake of outting himself to a stranger on the pretext of asking. He could have rented someone else for this job.
" No, that's not what I meant Kurt. I- I"
Kurt stood still, his ocean blue eyes focussing on Blaine's invisible moustache, craving for an explanation. Blaine didn't want to throw a mere explanation. He had to explain a minor, a kid (at least in the country) to convince him to do this sacred job. And words were to be chosen from heaven. His mouth quivered as he was waved for the words out of the air.
"What do you mean by that mate? Do you see me as an accessory?"
"No, no. Look, I got this message from my parents this morning and it shook the Earth for me. When I told you I am tight on budget, I really meant it." Blaine pulled his phone and scrolled for the message. He produced it before Kurt for proof.
" I came out of a miserable situation recently and my parents are trying to accept me for what I am. But in the situation prevailing, I had to make them believe that I was true. I am not dating anybody now. I could be going someplace to find an alternative but you and I as roommates have coped up the situation together for the past two and a half weeks."
Kurt couldn't get these things into his head. He knew he was younger than Blaine and Blaine asking him to be his boyfriend although it was fake was beyond ridiculous and unacceptable. Blaine gave his iconic puppy eyes. Kurt found himself getting less resistant to those. He wouldn't have given his face if somebody else put him in this situation. But something from Blaine couldn't make tell no. It was like a spark. A spark.
" Look, Kurt. I am more than happy to help you with the money. I think you are going on hard terms with your family. I am just asking for a favour in return. You can be straight, gay, or whatever you are, but it's just like an acting job. You act and you get paid."
Kurt put his creative mind into this kind of thing for the first time. Sure, pretending was not a difficult job as he pretended so much at school. If he said his school life was a theatre show, it was an understatement. But pretending to help a stranger is a different type of pretending.
Blaine's stomach had been twisting like a front load washing machine. Staying in an apartment just to make deal with a minor to be a fake boyfriend would be the best adventurous story possible.
Kurt's face had toned down in its anger field. Kurt's emotions were vibrant with curiosity, almost shadowing his anger and frustration.
"Kurt? Kurt? KURT!"
Blaine snapped his finger in front of Kurt to bring him back. He nodded at Kurt, waiting for his words. " I don't know what to say."
Blaine started to use emotional talk as a weapon to bait Kurt. " I don't know anybody in this city. You are the only person I know. Wouldn't you want to help your friend?"
That caught Kurt off-guard. Kurt did know he was lying cause he bumped into his ex-wife before. Should he bring up his ex? Probably not. Kurt knew his dad was a sweetheart. But he always had a distance maintained between them. Asking for money was a little uncomfortable task for Kurt.
Blaine tuning and trying out new songs added up to Kurt's mental note on considering his chance to be his "boyfriend." He kinda liked Blaine for sure. It wasn't the dislike he had at the start. And who wouldn't want to act a boyfriend to a man who is a masterpiece in appearance?
Kurt came out around an hour and sat on the couch with his result. Blaine plopped his guitar and looked like a peasant waiting for manna. " Well, We can discuss thisafter some more discussion. I mean...umm...the conditions and other things."
"Fine. First of all, this is obvious that we must be appealing enough to be boyfriends. Second, We are asked to stay for a week but we can modify that through excuses."
Kurt's beady eyes looked like they survived a disaster.
"And third, we would almost be kissing on cheeks if you are comfortable. And once my inherited money is credited to me, I would settle your payment."
"But what about our works? I have cloth designing and you must have rehearsals or shooting."
"For the record, We have them in the slot. Next week is off for me."
"Oh. I didn't know that. I have a week or two for designing and stitching and I am really a rapid worker. So, that shouldn't cause a problem."
Blaine kept staring at Kurt's perfect bow-shaped lips and his carved jawlines. He knew he couldn't but it happened without his consent as Kurt went ranting about being Mr Perfect and blowing his trumpet a little.
"Alright, are you in this? I mean you can drop out if you can."
"You have my word, mate. Only for the money."
"Alright cool! So we should talk about the other things."
Kurt couldn't keep his eyes open and he badly needed to excuse himself. Blaine wasn't dumb to not understand it.
"I think you need a nap. I have no issue in talking tomorrow."
Kurt nodded with all the strength he had. Blaine patted his shoulder amicably and let Kurt move to his room. Blaine had a weird feeling about the chain Kurt was describing. He hadn't seen the chain but if that made Kurt sad, he was sure to go to any extent. It had been a long time since he felt something like that.
The next day went with both of them filing a complaint about the robbery and on Sue Sylvester too. Blaine didn't have a picture of her, but he managed to depict her by drawing.
Kurt and Blaine walked back to their apartment in the afternoon to take some rest and get ready for their test.
"So, was she looking like that?"
"Who?" said Blaine with his food-filled mouth.
"Sue who? S-y-l"
"Sylvester Kurt."
"Yeah her. Was she like the portrait?"
" That woman was uglier than the portrait. I would rather buy the portrait than her photo."
Kurt chuckled a bit. That was the first time Blaine saw Kurt chuckling. He didn't know he would be the most beautiful thing ever in that chuckle. He was adorable. Blaine felt hot behind his neck on watching this sight.
"So, you gay?"
Blaine double- took to hear it clearly. Kurt repeated the same and the question was true. Blaine swallowed a lump, thinking of the incident that happened last night. Blaine nodded. He didn't ask Kurt about him. He had so much on his plate and his brain was not working well.
They reached the apartment and gave each other their privacy before they assembled for their interview part.
"Alright. Hi back here."
Blaine was excited as a 5-yr old kid who got a Chewbacca backpack or a heavily drunk guy in euphoria. Kurt sat gently, trying not to hurt his ass cheeks. Blaine didn't notice how tight Kurt's pants were hugging his leg. His lower body structure was seen translucent through his tight pants.
"Well, to start with, how old are you? I mean I shouldn't ask but you know-"
Kurt didn't realize until then that they didn't know each other well and it wasn't an understatement. His brain kept fiddling with numbers of his real age and older numbers. Blaine knew he was a minor but didn't know his age exactly.
"Ninete-nineteen?"
"I guessed it before. I mean you were talking over the phone about college and I did the math."
Kurt smiled pleasantly, nodding. God, he was gorgeous! Blaine slapped himself to come back to his senses. Kurt was curiously waiting for the next question.
"Just a fly, sorry. " Blaine cleared his throat.
"And you?"
"I'm 22." Kurt had heard this number before. Oh yes. He kept forgetting it was the same Anderson he had a fantasy with. And this went the basic conversation of knowing each other quite a bit to not mess up with their story spinning. It took them 3 solid days before their departure. Getting to know each other was in a way strengthening their friendship. They kept rehearsing their dialogues and syllabus to tackle the questions from Blaine's home.
The D-day had come and Blaine was all set for the visit, unlike Kurt who took days to pack his bags.
"Kurt, we are not going to get married. We are just going the visit my parents and going to pretend."
Kurt agreed to be his fake boyfriend for the trip but the word pretend was making him uncomfortable. He couldn't explain it, he couldn't to Blaine. He kept standing before his vanity, holding his stomach.
"Coming mate."
Kurt decided to focus on moving his bags and he kept dragging them.
"Whoa whoa. Do you wonna talk about this?" Kurt blushed a little in embarrassment. He was tired of explaining his suitcases to other people except for Blaine. A cool breath-mint air spread all through Kurt's body, making him shiver.
"Well, mate. Fashion has no time and gender. I wanted to present the best of myself to your family to convince them and I do it my way."
Blaine shrugged his shoulder smiling slimly and helped Kurt in loading his things in their rental car. They stopped into their seats with Blaine on driver's. Kurt wanted to sit in the back but his luggage said no. He rolled his eyes, thinking of sitting aside Blaine and his fate ruining his decisions.
Blaine was excited to drive to his hometown. The last time he visited his hometown was one of the tragic days in his life. All his dreams shattered that day. Kurt's cerulean eyes wandered all through his window side to get a glimpse of the perfect landscape of scenery. They were quite different from his country. Kurt was unconsciously grinning from ear to ear.
" It's funny how we went from being total strangers to hating each other to play fake boyfriends."
Kurt didn't get what Blaine was spitting out. He didn't realize until then how his stay changed. If someone said that he would be playing a boyfriend to a stranger in New- York a few months ago, he would have burst into a peal of laughter and called them crazy.
"We are still strangers mate."
"I thought we were friends." Blaine's animatic voice tickled Kurt a bit.
"I don't think we are friends when we don't know the whole of each other." Kurt had a point though.
"Well for the record, this is a great improvement of attitude from your side and..."
Kurt tilted his head slightly towards Blaine to signal he was listening. " We will get there. This might be the starting but we'll get there."
Blaine's hazel eyes were brimming with the promise of working on them and gaining a strong friendship that could change their life. Kurt found it comforting. Those Hazel eyes could comfort Kurt anytime.
Blaine needed some distraction and he turned on the radio. One thing that he would enjoy on a ride the most was listening to random songs.
It's been said and done
Every beautiful thought's been already sung
Blaine was almost sounding like him trying to seduce Kurt. Kurt twisted his head to Blaine: not in annoyance this time, but with curiosity."What?"Kurt shook his head. " Nothing. Uh... the song-"Blaine got what Kurt was trying to ask. " Oh! the song? I love this song and I love singing. Am I disturbing you? Should I-"
"Oh no, mate. Continue singing."
Blaine turned back to the stirring wheel, continuing with the rest of the song. Blaine's idea of practising to fake being boyfriend started to get implemented by him trying to sing to Kurt, even if it didn't make any sense as of now.
And I guess right now here's another one
So your melody will play on and on, with the best of 'em
You are beautiful, like a dream come alive, incredible
A centrefold miracle, lyrical
You saved my life again
And I want you to know baby
Never did Blaine get into the Marina Trench of the song's meaning until now. And funny enough, it could be something that he could sing to Kurt. He wouldn't be admitting to Kurt but Kurt was one of the most gorgeous living creatures to exist in his opinion. He could his teenage dream. He was a miracle unfolding before his eyes. And he was saving him in a way. A soft, fluffy voice joined with his honey-like dreamy voice. Kurt's voice was sweet icing on Blaine's, increasing its intensity slowly.
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
And I keep hitting re-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
And I keep hitting re-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat
Kurt was grinning like a hallucinated person. Music was his guilty pleasure; he had denied most people his love of music but when the music takes over his heart, he loses the battle naturally. Blaine slipped the throttle of the song to Kurt without his knowledge and Kurt didn't realize it as he was carried away by the song. The song was having a heavy British topping coated. Blaine was mesmerized nevertheless.
Constantly, boy, you play through my mind like a symphony
There's no way to describe what you do to me
You just do to me, what you do
And it feels like I've been rescued
I've been set free
I am hypnotized by your destiny
You are magical, lyrical, beautiful
You are
And I want you to know, baby.
Blaine didn't know if these lyrics made any sense to Kurt, but it made whole damn sense to him. That time, Blaine iced on Kurt's voice and it was a match made in heaven.
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
And I keep hitting re-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat
I, I love you like a (love song, baby) love song, baby
I, I love you like a (love song, baby) love song, baby
I, I love you (I love you, I love you) like a love song, baby
And I keep hitting re-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat (like a love song)
They found a perfect duet partner for each other and they weren't complaining. All they cared about was the song and the voice. A tinge of thought revolving around their lives to be smooth and carefree like the very moment was bugging their minds.
No one compares
You stand alone, to every record I own
Music to my heart that's what you are
A song that goes on and on
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
And I keep hitting re-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat-peat
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I, I love you like a love song, baby
I love you... like a love song
The RJ was comparing their next program and blah, blah, blah, blah. Kurt and Blaine barely listened to the radio anymore. They were facing each other, pausing the car on the roadside. They were grinning at themselves, thinking of the silly concert they put on some minutes before. That was a different experience for both of them. Their heavy breaths were echoing in the car gently and their limbs were stretched to ease themselves.
"Wow! That! We have undeniable chemistry between us!" told Blaine, panting and taking breaths between words.
"Undeniable Chemistry eh?" asked Kurt playfully, hitting Blaine's elbow and grinning widely. That was the first time in a long time that Kurt found internal contentment and happiness in him. It was not explainable and the feelings were strong.
Blaine chuckled, showing his pearl teeth. " Hmm hmm! I was scared of us being satisfying enough in our pretend but now I have no doubt."
"I am a great actor. Don't underestimate me."
Both of them stared at each other for a good minute and burst into a pile of laughter. The hopes of their budding friendship kept growing to a new level as they were heading to Hicksville. Kurt could call that progress even if it was a teaspoon of improvement.
