"I ask you one last time: Where have you seen her?"

Mirabel tried to massage her headache away, unsure if they were the same as the previous two weeks or if they showed up because an angry man started screaming at her. All she wanted was to check if tío Bruno was already back; she definitely didn't want an argument with two people she didn't even know.

"Father, give her time to breathe." The younger man seemed to be more sane, but he clearly was angry, too. "I don't know if you or one of your siblings saw her, but I have to know where my daughter is hiding."

"Who are you, anyway?" Mirabel wasn't dumb; she figured out by now that those two men must be none other than Mateo and Samuel Moreno, father and grandfather of Elena. She only needed time to think of a way out of this unpleasant situation. How did they find out of their encounter, anyway?

"Don't play stupid, you little brat!" The elder one demanded. "Don't you know that my daughter-in-law was a Guzmán? She even was Mariano's godmother, and he apparently chose to be with one of your cousins!"

Silently, Mirabel cursed her nosy cousin. Of course, Dolores told her boyfriend everything, who told his mother, who told the Morenos…

"What is going on?" Mirabel sighed in relief when Bruno and Abuela came out of the house; she didn't even wonder how her uncle managed to come back without her noticing him.

"Oh, look who is back!" Samuel mocked, looking straight at Bruno. "That you even DARED to come back after all you have done you misery excuse of a…. "

"You will NOT talk to my son like this in my own house, Samuel!" Abuela screamed in anger, protectively positioning herself between Mirabel and the Morenos. "You will never …."

"It's ok, mamá. I'll take it from here." Softly, Bruno pushed his mother aside, looking directly into Samuel's eyes. "Whatever you want to say, say it to me and not to my mother or my niece." He stayed calm, but Mirabel could see the white of his knuckles. Oh boy…

"Oh, I would LOVE to say a thing or two, Bruno!" This time, Mateo Moreno was speaking, hardly holding back his anger. "YOU made us foolishly believe that there might be hope for my wife, only so that YOUR sister could give her up! YOU ruined my daughter's life with your damn prophecy; YOU made sure that she isn't married yet, and YOU made her run away. And now it is YOUR family who doesn't even have the decency to tell us where she is hiding!"

"You can say about me whatever you want, but NEVER say a bad word about my sister!" Mirabel and Abuela flinched at Bruno's words; none of them had ever seen this side of him.

"Julieta risked her health and the life of my unborn niece just because YOU were too stubborn to listen earlier! She tried EVERYTHING to heal her from cancer, but your wife didn't have the strength to fight anymore. Elena was the only one seeing it!"

For a brief second, Mirabel felt like the fog in her head cleared up. She could feel that something was hiding behind the rage and fury, but whatever it was, the Morenos made sure that nobody could see it.

"Elena cried because YOU told her she had to wait for at least ten years to marry. Did you ever have a vision, or was it a clever trick to make sure that no Moreno would be left?"

"Elena didn't cry because she had to wait to marry; Elena cried because she thought she had to marry Perez eventually!" Bruno was furious.

Abuela protectively wrapped her arms around her granddaughter, aware that almost everything could happen now. Her son rarely screamed, but something bad was sure to happen when he did.

"Do you know how many times she had to fake a smile because he belittled her? Do you know that reason her face was the last thing he remembered seven years ago was that she BROKE HIS NOSE after he drunkenly tried to touch her? She ran away because YOU were too stubborn to listen to her even once!"

"Where is she hiding?" Samuel growled, and suddenly, Mirabel felt like she could empathize with every emotion coming from the Moreno's. It wasn't just hate and anger like she expected. Instead, she could sense grief and guilt, worry and angst not only coming from the Morenos but also from her Abuela and uncle. Something inside her screamed to do something, but she couldn't even lift her finger. She couldn't feel the embrace of her Abuela anymore; actually, she didn't even feel like she possessed any body parts. Then, in horror, she noticed that her spirit was indeed not connected to her body anymore.

"You could beat the life out of me, and I wouldn't tell you." It was the last thing Mirabel heard her uncle say; his eyes were glowing in bright green. Then, everything faded black.

"We have to get her inside." Bruno helped his shocked mother raise his unconscious niece, secretly cursing himself that he didn't notice Mirabel's condition any sooner. At least the Morenos had the dignity to leave as soon as her body hit the ground. He could see his brother-in-law running down the stairs, ready to rip some heads off if necessary.

"What happened? We heard screaming and…Camilo, get Julieta!"

Félix rushed them inside, looking worried at his niece. Bruno could already hear his sister reaching for every food she could get her fingers on while he placed Mirabel on the bed in the guest room. It was the only room with a bed in the basement, having direct access to the kitchen in case of an emergency.

"You don't have to stuff an arepa into her mouth; it wouldn't help anyway."

Julieta looked at her brother's face as if he had just killed somebody.

"Don't worry." Bruno's voice softened, noticing that his words could have been misleading.

"She'll be alright, but you shouldn't give her any food before she hasn't woken up. Mirabel needs a rest, not the potential risk of choking from a healing arepa."

Hesitantly, Julieta stopped trying to feed her child before she finally put the arepa back on the tray. Somehow, Bruno always knew more about what was going on, so mistrusting his words was of no use.

Bruno gave his family one last look, then he rushed out of the room, his mother following him.

"Bruno, wait! I saw you having an uncontrolled vision; what does it mean?" He turned around to see his mother's worried face, knowing that he probably didn't have the time to explain everything.

"Actually, I don't know." He sighed. "It was something regarding Mirabel's headache and our dispute with the Morenos… I have to be sure and see what it means." Bruno's glance went up to his tower, but Abuela's eyes widened in shock.

"Do you really have to do this? You never wanted to go up there again!"

He shook his head, not knowing how he could explain the urgency of the matter to his mother.

"I went too far when I said all those things to the Morenos. I was angry with them and with myself, but by indulging in anger, I made everything worse."
