I do not own Initial D. I only own my OC Jack Giri.

Author's note: This is my first try at an initial D story. Truth be told it has been a while sense I have seen Initial D and I never watched the special stage with Mako and Sayuki but this was an idea I had floating around in my head so I decided to turn it into something.

Initial D: Ghost Chase.

It was a beautiful hot summer Japanese night as Mako and Sayuki stood at the summit of mount Usi as they waited for their opponent.

"We don't even know if he will show." Sayuki said with a hint of irritation as a cool breeze began to blow. "We don't even know if it is a he, or if "they" are even real Sayuki." Mako pointed out. "Oh come on Mako, you don't actually believe that it was a ghost car do you?" Sayuki nearly scoffed as she crossed her arms. "I don't really know. All I know is that I have never seen a car that looks, sounds, or moves like that in my life." Mako said as her mind drifted back to the almost unreal memory.

-FLASH BACK-

Mako was racing down the mountain with her co driver and best friend Sayuki. Mako had just come back into town after fulfilling her dream of becoming a professional racer and winning the championship race. "Wow Mako you have gotten a lot faster!" Sayuki exclaimed with surprise. Sayuki was amazed at how much Mako had improved as a driver.

"A few years of professional racing will do that to you." Mako said with a smirk. It felt good to be back in the seat of her old Sileighty with her best friend Sayuki in the passenger seat just like old times. Just than the sound of an engine came roaring through the canyon. The sound was like nothing Mako or Sayuki had ever heard before. The sound was low and aggressive sounding like the roar of a wild cat while the rhythm was long and spaced out. "Huh?" Sayuki said with surprise. Not only at the fact that there was another car around but also at the fact that said car was loud enough to be heard with the windows up.

Mako saw a glint in her rearview mirror and looked in surprise to see a pair of headlights rounding the last corner that was behind them. "Where did they come from?" Mako asked almost breathlessly. Sayuki looked back over her shoulder at the set of headlights behind them with a sneer. "Why don't you show this looser what you can do?" Sayuki asked in disgust. "Right." Mako said with a serious nod.

Mako kicked it up to 110 as she tuned out the world around her and only focused on her driving. For the next several corners Mako gave it her all as she nailed almost every apex. By this time Mako was sure that she had lost them and was well pleased to see no lights in her rear view mirror. It would than come to her great surprise when she realized that the lights weren't behind her but beside her.

"What!?" Sayuki exclaimed in shock as she looked to her left to see the headlights coming closer to her window as the car was quickly gaining ground and about to pass them. Neither Mako or Sayuki were sure how they didn't notice the car with as loud as it was until now, they must have been too in the zone to notice the noise.

Mako could do nothing but helplessly watch as they went into a left hand corner with the other car taking the inside line. As the car quickly began to pass them in the corner bits of the car began to come into view in the glow of headlights. The car was long and low and sleek looking as it walked passed them like they were sitting on a park bench.

Once the car got in front the mystery car could be seen from behind. The back window was vertical instead of a fast back design and the rear deck portion of the car was very long. But the most notable thing about the back was the tail lights which were wide and span from the license plate, which, there was one, and around to the corners of the back of the car. In the tail lights on either side of the spot where the license plate should be there were two insignias of some type of a large roaring cat.

The mystery car moved to the right as it passed Mako's Sileighty before going into a long right hand bend. Mako tried to keep up but try as she might the ominous looking automobile simply walked away as she failed to match pace with it be for going into a long and steep downhill straightway where once out of the view of her headlight simply seemed to vanish almost like it never even existed.

-END FLASH BACK-

"Oh come on Mako. Remember another racer said that they had seen a similar looking car outside some automotive engineering shop? They said that they would go in and ask around and tell the owner to meet us here tonight. That's why we're here in the first place." Sayuki drew out sarcastically, hoping to jog her friends memory or snap her out of whatever kind of trance she was in.

"Yea but we don't know if that is the same car or not. That person said that they had no clue what kind of car it was. And we have no idea what kind of car we saw either so this could just be a ghost hunt." Said Mako. "Well obviously it must have been some foreign car Mako, not a ghost car." Sayuki said with disbelief.

Both Mako and Sayuki went rigid with the hairs on their arms and backs of their necks standing up straight as a strong gust of wind came rolling in along with the ghostly sound of an engine. The same engine that they had heard that night. "See, I told you it was real." Sayuki said as she tried to hide the fear in her voice. "Mmhhmm…" Mako hummed as she raised an eyebrow at Sayuki.

Before long a car pulled up about 10 feet away from Mako and Sayuki. It was hard to get a good look at the car from the glare of the headlights but it did appear to be menacing looking and the sound of that engine didn't help things. The lights and engine than cut off as the car's left door swung open. As the door opened Mako and Sayuki were eager to get a look at the person who would step out.

The man that stepped out of the vehicle was clearly of Caucasian decent and had long shoulder length brown hair that was slicked back with a matching beard about 6 inches in length and piercing hazel brown eyes. The man wore a white Hawaiian shirt with sail boats on it, blue jeans, and smoked a big cigar. The man simply stared at them for a time. Mako and Sayuki being Japanese didn't know what the man really looked like but to American's he would probably be likened to a Miami drug dealer.

"My Name is Jack Giri." The Man said in a strong low voice as he shut the door took a step forward. "Wait, that thing is just a hunk of junk!" Exclaimed Sayuki as she got a better look at the car from the light of a nearby street lamp. "Sayuki…" Mako said with embarrassment as she face palmed. The car did appear to be in very rough condition as most of the black paint was very badly faded or missing with light patches of surface rust scattered across the body.

"I know it doesn't look like much but appearances can be deceiving." Jack said ominously with a devious and predatory smirk. Sayuki flinched slightly as she took a small step back in alarm. "Please forgive my friend for her rudeness, but what kind of car is that?" Mako apologized, trying to make up for Sayuki's bad manners.

"This is a 1987 Mercury Cougar that for obvious reasons I call Ugly Cat." Said Jack. "1987? That thing is old as dirt!" Sayuki exclaimed in a condescending tone. "Sayuki…" Mako said with embarrassment as she slapped both hands over her face and shook her head. "What? I thought you wanted to race this loser?" Sayuki asked as if she had done nothing wrong. "This is why you can't get a boyfriend." Mako said slightly muffled by the hands still covering her face. "Hey shut up you don't have one either!" Sayuki exclaimed indignantly.

"Why would you want to race me?" Jack asked casually as if he really didn't care about what Sayuki had to say or the embarrassing argument between them. Seemingly snapped out of their own world Mako and Sayuki turned to look at him with surprise. "Are you…!" Sayuki began before Mako slapped a hand over her mouth to silence her. "Well you see… About a week ago we were out here doing a little run and you passed us." Said Mako. "If I passed you than didn't you already lose?" Jack asked as if he didn't care enough to be bothered even trying to remember.

Mako looked down a little embarrassed at his question. Sayuki than grabbed onto Mako's arm and forcefully removed her hand from her mouth. "Why you jerk we're going to make you eat those wards!" Sayuki shouted with angered determination.

Jack simply looked her in the eyes with an uncaring look as he took a long drag of his large cigar before releasing the smoke as he looked away uncaringly, causing Sayuky to tremble slightly at his gaze but she wouldn't let herself show weakness. "When I heard that two chicks wanted me to meet them up here at midnight I have to say that I had no intentions of showing up." Jack said with another drag of his cigar.

"You're asking for a fight aren't you!?" Exclaimed Sayuki as she rushed forward, fists ready for a fight but was stopped by Mako. "Sayuki no!" Shouted Mako as she wrapped her arms around Sayuki's midsection. "Mako let go of me! I'm going to teach this guy a lesion!" Shouted Sayuki as she struggled to get free. "Hmm, I like you." Jack said with a smirk as he gestured towards Sayuki.

"Huh?" Sayuki asked with surprise as she topped struggling and her cheeks began to turn faintly red. "You got fire and spirit. Things I like in a woman." Jack said with a smirk, causing Sayuki to turn redder. "But I digress. I had no intentions of coming up here, but not for the reasons you are thinking. A guy hearing that two girls want him to meet them on top of a mountain at midnight sounds a little… Sus. …And I'm not that kind of guy." Jack said before another drag. At that Mako and Sayuki both turned red.

"But then I heard that they were two female street races who wanted to race some car that they had seen on the mountain a few nights before. And then I have to admit, I was intrigued. So if you want to race, let's race." Jack said finishing with a devious and predatory smirk.

Mako and Sayuki stood there looking embarrassed for a moment before Sayuki shouted; "Fine!" and walked to their car and got in. "…Sorry about that. Anyways, this is how we race: We do a cat and mouse run. One chases while the other one runs. If the one fallowing passes, they win, and if they fall back to the point of losing sight of the other car they lose. At the end of each run we switch places. Is that alright with you?" Asked Mako. "Perfectly." Jack said as he let out a breath of smoke.

"So do you want to be the cat, or the mouse?" Asked Mako. Jack took another drag of his cigar as he appeared to think it over. "I'll be the mouse. This is your course so you have the most experience with it. If I fallow you I already know what to do sense I will have just seen you do it." Jack said after letting out a breath of smoke. Mako seemed surprised by his explanation. She knew a rooky driver would choose to be the mouse while a seasoned driver would choose to be the cat, for the exact reason he had described. However, the fact he chose to lead just to give them the advantage made her worried. Was he arrogant? She doubted it given his demeanor. Or was he some new breed of monster behind the wheel that she had never seen before? Somehow she feared that she knew the answer.

"Alright. …May the best racer win." Mako said slightly nervously. "That's kinda how racing works. Ya know, unless you cheat." Jack said with a smirk. "…Right." Mako said slightly nervously. Truth be told she found the man slightly intimidating. Not in the way she felt fearful that he would try to harm her but rather just intimidated by the power of his presence.

Mako made her way back to her Sileighty and got in as she waited for Jack to join her at the starting line. " I think he likes you." Mako teased Sayuki to calm her own nerves as she did up her racing harness. Sayuki didn't say anything as she blushed and looked away as she gritted her teeth.

As Jack pulled his Cougar in front on the starting line Mako started her Sileighty and revved the engine a few times. As did her opponent. Sayuki covered her ears at the thundering noise. "Geez! After this race is over we need to find out what he has in that thing." Said Sayuki. Mako nodded in agreement.

Mako and Sayuki than watched as the car in front of them began doing a burnout as tire smoke quickly filled the air and blocking the car from view with the exception of the tail lights in the smoke. "Alright, now he is just showing off." Sayuki said indignantly as she crossed her arms. Mako chuckled nervously as she looked at her friend. "He's warming his tires." Mako thought with amazement. "Ok Mako, time to get serious. You're not going to win this with fear." Mako told herself internally as she steeled her nerves.

With that the tail lights dimmed through the smoke as the driver let off the brake causing the car to lurch forward with a mighty roar. Mako put her gear box in first as she dumped the clutch and gunned it, making her own Sileighty shoot forward through the cloud of tire smoke. On the other side of the cloud Mako could see that her opponent had gotten a little ways ahead on the straightway before the first corner but she still had a chance to catch up.

As they went through the first few corners the car in front seemed to slow down as if to allow them to catch up but maintained a pace that did not allow them to pass. "GGGRRR! What does he think he is doing!? Is he trying to insult us!?" Sayuki roared. "Sayuki would you calm down? I'm trying to concentrate!" Mako shot back. Mako had improved greatly during her time as a professional racing driver. When she and Sayuki had first started out Sayuki had been her co driver like one would have in rally racing but that wasn't something that was allowed in her professional racing career so she had to learn how to drive without one which had forced her to learn even greater focus, concentration, and endurance when driving. Thus Sayuki really didn't have much to do these days other than sit and watch.

"Am I messing up your perfect weight distribution?" Sayuki asked with a pout. Truth be told while having Sayuki on board did increase the vehicles weight it also evened out the cars weight distribution by having very similar weights on either side of the car. "No your mouth is just slowing me down." Said Mako. "Ok fine, I'll be quiet." Sayuki pouted.

As Mako continued down the mountain in pursuit of her opponent the euro beat song Queen of love could be heard faintly from outside the car. "Huh? He must have one hell of a sound system." Mako thought to herself. As they continued down the mountain the Cougar stayed a little over a cars length ahead at all times Much to Mako's irritation. No matter how fast she went it seemed she couldn't close the gap even an inch.

Over the years Mako's driving style had changed from strictly drifting to a mix of drifting and grip depending on the corner. This allowed her to maximize her speed as drifting wasn't the fastest way through every corner, and gripping wasn't the fastest way through every corner.

"I wanna see what he does at C 121." Sayuki thought eagerly to herself as she gently chewed on her thumb nail. C 121 was a corner where the fastest way through was to drift. There was no way for the tires of a car to grip the road surface at maximum speed due to the lateral G forces and thus drifting was the only option. Mako had seen that her opponent's driving style appeared to be solely gripping as she had yet to see him drift on this run and nor had she seen him drift when he passed them that night. Her plan was to pass him at C 121. He would take the inside line bust start to slide off course or slow down to make the corner without sliding to the outside and she would just drift on through either on the inside or the outside depending on what happened.

As they approached C 121 the rusted old car in front seemed to speed up. As they entered the corner the car appeared as though it was about to drift. Much to Mako and Sayuki's surprise they watched as the car's weight shifted quickly to one side as it began to pitch heavily but instead of under steering and sliding to the outside line the rear end of the car merely slid slightly to reposition it's self on the road before powering through the corner as it hit the apex on the way out the corner.

"That did not just happen!" Shouted Sayuki. "He completely changed lines in the middle of a corner." Mako said breathlessly as she felt her blood begin to run cold. Even she had never been able to hit the apex perfectly. "That's not even possible! Isn't that against the laws of physics?" Questioned Sayuki. "I suppose it should be. But we just saw it for ourselves. I don't think that this man is even human." Mako said in breathless awe. "Now don't go back to your ghost car theory Mako." Said Sayuki.

The race continued as before as if nothing had happened. The Cougar didn't pull away and the Sileighty couldn't close the gap. At the bottom of the run the ghostly car pulled up behind Mako and Sayuki in their sileighty and waited for them to start the run.

"You think we have any chance of winning this?" Asked Sayuki. "No. But I don't intend on giving up. That would be disrespectful. If I can't beat him, I might as well give him something to look at." Mako said with a determined smirk. "You sure you're not the one that likes him Mako?" Sayuki teased. "Shut up!" Mako shouted as she began to blush. "Mako and Jacky, sitting in a tree. g." Sayuki teased in sing song fashion with a giggle. Mako simply growled as she turned redder.

Jack revved his engine a few times to signify that he was ready. At the thunderous growling noise from the other engine Mako and Sayuki snapped out of it before starting their run up the hill. On the run up the hill the car in behind stayed glued to Mako's bumper by a distance of about 2 inches the entire time except when he faked like he was going to pass, sometimes on the inside, and sometimes on the outside.

"Damn it! He's just toying with us! He could pass any time he wants!" Shouted Sayuki. "I know. So why doesn't he?" Mako asked softly. "Probably gets his sick kicks from playing rough with poor defenseless girls." Sayuki said indignantly as she crossed her arms. Mako chuckled. "Oh sayuki, you only wish it was something so perverted." Mako teased. "I do not!" Shouted Sayuki.

As Jack fallowed close behind he could see that the two girls appeared to be fighting. "Wow, that girl has some skill. They seem to be having a conversation, or argument while driving and it doesn't seem to throw her off one bit. I have to admit I'm amazed. Even though I been teasing her this entire race she has remained calm. She even seems to be improving as we go along." Jack said softly out loud with wonder. "Well, might as well light up another cigar. We're going to be here a while." Jack said as he took his hands off the wheel and lit up a cigar before casually placing his arm around the passenger seat.

"Wait! Is he relaxing?" Sayuki questioned in shock as she caught a glimpse of him in the side mirror. "You know, I think he is." Mako said with a small chuckle and an amused smirk.

The rest of the night was spent with both cars running up and down the mountain as they took turns chasing the other. Somewhere along the line it had stopped being a tense race and started being an enjoyable roller coaster ride. Both cars reached the bottom of the run as the sun started to rise on the horizon. At this point both cars were nearly on empty and unable to continue.

Jack was the first to get out of his car as he approached Mako and Sayuki as they got out of their car. There was a comfortable silence as a cool breeze blew through as Jack Mako just stared at each other for a moment.

"I guess you won." Mako said softly as she stared into his eyes. "I prefer to call it a tie." Jack replied casually. Both girls gasped in surprise at his reply. "But, why?" Asked Sayuki. Jack looked at them for a moment before turning to look at the sun rise as another wind blew through. "That was the most fun I have had in a very long time. Your skills are amazing. I have no doubt you have the potential to be among the best in the world." Jack said before turning back to look at Mako.

"Can you… Teach me?" Mako asked hopefully. "I already have." Jack said with a bright smile which surprised both of the girls. "I watched as you continuously improved as we went along. Do you know how few drivers can do that?" Asked Jack. "Not many I suppose." Mako said softly. "But… If you want. I guess I could help you girls out a little." Jack said hesitantly as he rubbed the back of his neck.

"Wow really? I would greatly appreciate it." Mako said thankfully as she clasped her hands together. "I have my own shop here in town. We're putting together a little racing team if you wanna join." Said Jack. "We would love to! "Announced Sayuki. "Grate." Jack said with a smile. "Well we best fill up. I don't know about you but I'm almost empty." Jack said as he walked back to his car and got in.

Mako and sayuki looked at him for a minute before turning to look at each other. "You know, I think this could be the start of something grate." Sayuki said cheerfully. "You think so?" Mako said stifling a laugh. "The only question is which one of us gets to date him?" Asked Sayuki. "Oh Sayuki." Mako said with a small chuckle as she shook her head in disbelief. "What? I'm just saying." Defended Sayuki. "You don't know if he is even single." Said Mako. The girls continued to bicker like that for some time.

Later outside a gas station both cars had their tanks filled as they sat around the parking lot eating and drinking convenience store breakfast and coffee. "So what's this thing got under the hood anyway?" Sayuki asked in a flirty manner as she batted her eyelashes at Jack as she sat next to him on the hood of his car as Mako sat on the hood of her Sileighty.

Jack slid off the hood and placed his food and drink on the roof as did Sayuki before Jack popped the hood and showed them the engine. "This is a 5.8 liter 351 Cleveland V8. It is a mild build making 420ish horse powers." Said Jack. "420!? Isn't that a lot?" Sayuki asked with surprise. "I have built naturally aspirated engines making over 1000 horse power." Jack said casually as he looked at her, to which Sayiki's eyes looked like they were going to pop out of her head.

"Is that the engine that came in the car?" Mako asked as she swallowed a bite of food. "No. The original engine was a 3.8 liter V6 making around 130 horse power. There was a 5 liter V8 option but the power and fuel economy numbers were only different by one or two numbers so it really made no difference. The only benefit to the V8 was greater reliability and a much greater aftermarket support. The engine I have in here is from like a 1970 Ford Mach1 Mustang and the 5 speed manual transmission is from a 90's ford truck. This car's counterpart the Ford Thunder Bird could be had with a 2.3 liter turbo engine which made about 190 horse power but that option was discontinued for the Cougar after 86 as it was unpopular due to the Cougar being an upscale luxury version of the Thunder Bird." Said Jack.

As Jack rambled on Sayuki looked at the interior and saw that the inside was about as rough as the outside. The dash was all cracked, the driver's seat was torn, the head liner and door panels were missing along with the radio and speakers. "Hey wait a minute! There is no radio in this car!" Exclaimed Sayuki. "So?" Jack asked with confusion. "So where was that music coming from earlier!?" Shouted Sayuki. "Music?" Jack asked confused. "Mako and Sayuki looked at each other like they had seen a ghost. "Ghost music." Mako said with a nervous smile. "Now don't you go starting that again!" Shouted Sayuki.

"So are you single?" Sayuki asked sweetly as Jack shut the hood and she leaned against the fender while batting her eye lashes at him. "Yea…?" Jack asked slightly apprehensively. "And you're not a ghost right?" Asked Sayuki. "What?" Jack asked with a small laugh. "Are you a ghost?" Sayuki repeated. "Um… No." Jack replied with a raised eyebrow. "See Mako?" Sayuki said as she turned to her. "Shut up." Mako said indignantly before returning to her breakfast.

"Well, you girls kept me up all night. I hope you don't make a habit of that." Jack said as he looked to the rising sun. "Don't worry I will." Sayuki teased. "You can ignore her if you want. I do all the time." Mako said with a mischievous grin as she looked up at them from her food. "Mako! That's so mean!" Cried Sayuki.

The girls bickered for a while as Jack tunes them out till they had stopped. "Hey, so you want to go to the water park?" Asked Sayuki. "Huh?" Jack asked as she had got his attention. "The water park, this Saturday. Wanna go?" Sayuki asked sweetly as she batted her eyes. "Sure. You're kind of cute anyways." Jack said with an amused smirk.

Sayuki began blushing a deep red before turning back to Mako. "See Mako, I get to date him first! And he said I was cute!" Sayuki rubbed in her face. "Oh no, if you two are going to the water park I am coming too." Mako said firmly. "What!? But why?" Sayuki whined. "Because you can't be trusted!" Shouted Mako. "I can to!" Sayuki shouted as she waved her fists in the air.

Jack simply smiled fondly as he watched them bicker which would probably last for some time. "I can already tell this summer is going to be fun." Jack said fondly as a gentle breeze blew.

The Euro beat song 'Season' began to play as the camera panned upwards to the sky. "Alright, where is that music coming from?" Sayuki demanded. "What music?" Asked Jack.

Author's note" Thank you for reading. I do not plan on making a continuation to this story but would be willing if asked.
