Wait… Who's the Main Character?
Quick little authors note! (you can skip it if you want). I wanted to express that this is one of the first stories I'm sharing publicly. Even after reading other books I have absolutely no idea where my writing level is at. If I'm too slow, maybe the exposition is tedious to read? Please just tell me any way to improve. I honestly really need it.
You'll also notice how some of this dialogue doesn't sound like it wouldn't belong to a 10 year old and you're right. The main character's intelligence isn't mentioned in this episode but it's above average (around a thirteen year olds intelligence) . It will come back later but I thought I'd point it out so none of you are confused.
The world of pokemon had almost too many wonderful opportunities to succeed. From being a trainer and challenging gyms, to working and making a living growing crops on farms. Life in the pokemon world runs on pure hard work and nothing else. Luck is almost obsolete. Karma however… makes its own cameos more than most would expect.
Alex worked on a farm with a few pokemon and his grandparents. His actual parents had left to be trainers when he was of young age. Due to their absence in his life he favored his grandparents over them. He lived a fairly relaxed life. The farm was pretty far from any giant towns, but that isn't to say that Alex couldn't connect to a lot of people. His farm was actually a checkpoint along route 201, one of the most dangerous. Due to this fact he wasn't permitted to leave the farm. Anyways he had many friends from many different regions carrying their own unique backstories. One thing that all these very different people had in common was the fact that they would beam when talking about pokemon, or more specifically training them. They were always enthusiastic and up until I was around 10 I thought the opposite. Some of my opinion was influenced by the fact that my parents had left to train pokemon and another part of it was that it seemed boring. I was only exposed to farm pokemon like miltank my entire life and didn't really see much variety.
He had wanted to pitch in even if he had gotten adjusted to the lifestyle of watching science documentaries on TV and eating his heart out. His wishes were granted when one day out of seemingly nowhere his grandfather offered to teach him how to till dirt and plant seeds. Apparently after the harvest both his grandparents began suffering from their poor backs. While they could both still work it would be much better to have someone who was fully capable, even if they were only 10 at the time. That same day after feeding the miltank grandpa brought Alex outside and began demonstrating just how to do it. It was one of those moments where someone tries to make their job sound hard by overexplaining every step. Although tedious it wasn't exactly hard for someone that had a reliable back. Alex bent down, tuning his grandfathers over explanation, as he attempted to copy his grandpa's movements. While it may not have been perfect Alex was proud of how good it looked and stood back up, being met with a stunned grandfather. Alex followed his grandfather's gaze to see that the side of the field Alex had been on… now had perfectly tilled dirt and was poked with evenly spaced and sized holes with seeds in them. It took me by surprise aswell.
We both stood there for quite awhile and the silence was broken by Alex's grandpa. "My… my arceus. You're already an expert!" My grandpa wasn't the brightest and neither was I, it took a second to click. He thought I was 10 year old. Had planted hundreds of seeds in a matter of minutes? I tried explaining it to him but he was already running inside to grab grandma. I saw my grandparents walk out minutes later, my grandma wore a skeptical face which turned to surprise as she stared at me in the middle of the field. She put her hand over her mouth to cover up what was clearly a shocked expression. "Wait-" I attempted to explain to them but was cut off by my grandma. "Well, looks like you really were ready for this! What do you say to breakfast for dinner?" I almost let a bit of saliva escape my mouth. No kid could resist that.. What would be the harm in letting a little lie slide? I thought as I put on a smile and nodded.
After I went to sleep I had a bunch of weird dreams… Arceous was there aswell as a few other legendary pokemon… they were just there and so were two other humans… I couldn't make out any of their features but they said something before I woke up… "Karma is always on your side!" these words were what left me as I was drenched in the warm rays of light shining through my window.
It was already the next day and I listed my dream off as something weird my mind came up with during my sleep and I turned my mind to the bigger issue of where all those crops came from… I had absolutely no idea how or what happened, but it did indeed happen. That couldn't have possibly been any type of pokemon… not one that was near our farm at least. And it definitely wasn't me… or maybe it was? Do I have some secret ability not even I know of? The ability to plant crops fast… ah the miracle I would be. Obviously I didn't actually believe I could have done that, I was on the ground planting a singular seed that entire time. I stood up from my bed with these thoughts filling my head and looked out the window. My room was located in the attic but it was more of a second floor than an attic giving me a pretty good view of the entire farm. And I noticed a clump of people by some trucks with high-tech looking cameras on them. A news crew? Wonder what they were here for… I still had my pj's on but I didn't really mind. I walked outside barefoot and approached my grandparents who were standing right next to the hoard of people with microphones and cameras. "Hey grandpa…" I said. I was still half awake. "Oh hey buddy! These nice people are here because of what you did yesterday! Isn't that great!"
A wave of heat immediately hit me. I wasn't sweating but I was definitely turning a bit red. I was almost surprised they hadn't noticed. Not even I knew what happened yesterday so how was I supposed to explain anything to this group of people? One woman walked up to me and started talking super fast, so fast in fact that I could hardly understand her. I just had to add together the few words I did understand and guess what she was saying. It sounded like she was asking me about how I did it. To which I responded with a shrug. I meant to express that I legitimately didn't know how I did it but from their faces it seems like my point didn't come across. The next reporter that stepped up to me was a whole lot clearer. "So how does your family intend to address the large multiplication of miltank on your farm and in the general area?" The man said with a calm and confident voice. "what?" I said with an extremely confused expression. I turned to my grandpa for answers but he was no longer there. I looked around to spot my grandparents but they were nowhere in sight. "You know about that dont you? Your grandparents had told us that you were the one that lead to the miltank population increasing in the area." Well clearly I wasn't the only one making stuff up… but was that true? We've always had a relatively small amount of miltank on the farm. "Well it's um… all in the food!" Thanks to my grandparents I had to make up all this on the spot. "They are kept on an extremely precise diet" I stated as if I was a professional explaining how I won a horse racing tournament. The broadcasters mindlessly nodded as I carried on for a few minutes. I left the broadcasters with "well it's been fun but I have to go check on those miltank… uhh.. Recent overpopulation makes them quite the handful!" They let me leave, clearly not wanting to stay here much longer because of the rancid smell.
I ran over to the miltank cages and sure enough there were so many that they were squeezed against the borders of the pin. What was going on? I remembered the food I gave them yesterday… it was the normal stuff. And also… how do miltank multiply?! I seemingly forgot to ask myself this question. They don't just birth fully grown babies?! What explanation do my grandparents possibly have for this?
Sorry for the lack of much action! I needed to get all the introductions done and the base plot needed to be here. Don't worry Alex will, in not to long, learn the appeal of training pokemon!
