Asta knew instantly that this wasn't his thing. Going with Finral and Luck was just to please them. Mostly Finral. The older knight was still insecure about himself, Asta could tell.

Even if he acted cool around woman, trying to impress them wherever he went, the teen knew that he was silently worried about his own actions.

So, Asta agreed to accompany them. But when he saw her, Rebecca was her name, he knew it wouldn't work out. She was nice, that wasn't the problem. She was funny and looked good. A good person at heart, with lots of love for children. Especially her younger siblings.

But there was nothing about her that seemed to really spike his interest. Not the way he seemed to find himself fascinated by Yuno.

Asta found himself spending more and more time with the other magic knight. Mom and Dad didn't have a problem with that. He didn't know a lot about him though. Yuno was a quiet person, didn't talk about himself much. No matter what he asked, all he would receive would be short answers. If he got one that is.

So, most of the time Asta would talk with him about himself. About his parents and his life. How he grew up with the magic knights of his father, sometimes even his mother's.

But sitting there with Rebecca, there was not the same interest to talk. He had not problem helping her though. When that drunken guy came and was more then eager to 'help her out' there was no doubt in his mind to literally throw him into the wall. So he did.

That's what his parents had taught him. That was his ob. To help those who needed it, to protect others.

And again, when the children vanished in the middle of the night, he had no problem to help out again. Where Gauche suddenly came from, he didn't really know. Something about his sister living in the church.

The search led them into a cave not so far away from the small village. It was cold outside. None of them knew why it had started snowing. It wasn't the time of the year for snow. Usually, it was quite warm in these months.

His questions were answered thought when he found two mages inside the cave. One with snow magic an the other with some kind of mud magic. The children were gathered around them, not fully aware of what was going on.

They seemed to be in some sort of trance. Finding out that they were stealing their magic made his blood boil. Asta knew what it was like to live without any magic. Hundreds of children sharing the same fate was more than just unfair.

As much as he wished to find someone who knew what he felt like, he would never want someone to be like him. Mom always said that it was fine to be different, that it was good. But this kind of different was nothing he wished anyone else to be.

And then there was her. Sally. Some crazy girl, that was fixed on 'inspecting him'. She was not just crazy and completely out of her mind, but she was also creepy.

Her magic was strong too and no matter how hard he tried; his swords couldn't cut through it properly. She could regenerate her spell within seconds. His only chance was to cut through it until she had no magic left, but that was hard.

In his desire to be more powerful, the guy with mud magic asked her to strengthen his magic. And she did. With an enormous needle, injecting whatever it was directly into his neck.

It didn't work out like he wanted it too though. His magic running wild and turning him into mud. A giant monster made out of mud. Enough magic to regenerate whenever he was hit.

Asta had cut of his entire arm, but it didn't do much. It grew back in the next five seconds, if it even was that long. Sally found all this more than just funny. She enjoyed watching him fight it out.

Asta was more or less alone in the situation. While Sister Theresa helped him the best she could, Gauche had grabbed his siter and flew away.

He didn't care about them, that's what he thought for a few long minutes. He only cared about his sister and her safety. Sometimes he wondered why Gauche even became a magic knight.

Like everyone else in the black bulls, Gauche had been someone his Dad found him somewhere in the middle of nowhere while traveling. Asta had been eleven when that happened.

He was confused when his father came home with some grumpy teenager in prison robes. The questioning look he gave his father the first few times something like this happened had already vanished.

Well, no one came in looking like someone that just escaped from prison, but Yami tended to bring weird people home. Luck hadn't been any better.

But Asta still believed that Gauche would realize someday that with his magic he would be able to help someone.

And apparently Gauche had heard him. Because right when he was about to get blasted, Gauche kicked him out of the way. He was only fifteen but reckless as hell. If Mom knew about all this then she would lock him in somewhere and never let him out again.

And while all this was going on, the fight with the monster and keeping Sally at bay, Teressa tried to evacuate the children with her magic. It was hard, Asta knew it. He could see how tiring it was for her.

Gauche on the other hand didn't seem to have any problem. Aside from the fact that none of their magic could really do anything.

No matter how often he slashed with his sword, no matter how many fire explosions sister Theresa send, no matter how many mirror spells Gauche used, nothing changed.

The monster was still able to regenerate.

"I'm only doing this for Marie's love anyway" Gauche muttered. And Asta had enough.

"Why only her?" he asked.

"Cause she'll be sad if either of you dies. Can't let that happen" he retorted.

"Gauche we're a team. We work together" Asta said, slashing at the mud monster once again.

"Not me. I work only for Marie's love. If she wants something she gets it! So if she doesn't want you to die then she will get it!" the mirror mage yelled.

Asta sighed. He'd take what he can get for now. Maybe someday Gauche would realize that they were a team, just like Luck had. They needed each other. Alone, none of them would make it.

Something Asta realized when he was about five years old. Alone, he could be strong, independent even. But he could only get so far. He got stuck in a tree once, unable to go back down.

It was just too high up and his parents didn't know where he was. The forest surrounding the hideout was large. To large to find him in one tree. Asta feared that he had to jump, breaking something because of the fall.

Being honest with himself, Asta had ben scared. He didn't mind jumping down but breaking something hurt a lot. And he was sure that something would break. But to his luck, Dad had found him before he could convince himself to jump.

Mom had been so glad when they came back. It was the day he found out about Ki. The thing Dad used to find him and taught him. And it was also the day he found out, that, sometimes it was better not to be alone and rely on the help of others.

And Gauche would realize that too.

Only seconds later Asta got the chance to save Gauche like he had saved him moments before. And maybe that was enough already. It was in that moment that Asta saw something in Gauche's eye that made him wonder if that was all it took to make him see that it was okay to ask for help.

That they would make it together, that they were a team.

It was the one thing he had never seen before. Gauche's left eye. He always hid it and Asta didn't know why. Until now. What hid behind his hair was something Asta would almost describe as beautiful.

The eye was almost completely clear, didn't have the brown color of the right eye. Around the ring of the magic item, it looked like the normal white part of his eyes were scales. At least it had the pattern. Around the eye the skin was scarred. Asta imagined that it had been painful to get the magic item inserted.

And when he looked more clearly, Asta saw himself reflect in the eye. A spell, he realized, Gauche was performing a new spell.

That was enough, it was finally enough. He couldn't even count how many duplicates of himself were sent flying at both the mud monster and Sally, who was hiding in her salamander spell.

The crazy scientist seemed surprised herself. While she tried to hide inside her own spell for protection, it didn't help her for long. Mere seconds later she was launched onto the ground, sliding in the dirt for a moment before coming to a stop. She didn't move, definitely unconscious.

Asta couldn't help but feel a bit satisfied at the sight. After she had kidnapped him and tried to kill him, wanting to perform an autopsy on him, he just felt satisfied to see her hurt as well. Maybe it was the bit more sinister part of himself.

The other boy, Asta didn't know his name, was devastated by the death of his brother. Weird, they didn't look anything alike. Then again, Asta didn't look much like his parents either. They said he got it from his grandparents. He never met them.

"I'm sorry" the boy said. "I will work to make up for the crimes my brother and I committed" he confessed.

Asta smiled. "That's good. And when you're done with that, we can be friends."

The boy smiled. Things turned into the right direction. At least for a moment.

The next moment, the pale boy fell to the ground beside him. Something that looked like a sword made out of light was stuck in his back. Asta wasn't sure if he was still alive. Not like he had the time to check.

Gauche was struck as well, but in the leg.

"ASTA!" he heard Theresa yell.

He turned around quickly. Sister Theresa fell to the ground, several of the light spear piercing her whole body. She fell to the ground, blood flowing from the wounds and her mouth.

Asta felt his eyes widen, hands trembling. This was meant for him. He was supposed to be hit and lie on the ground. Distantly he heard Gauche yelling at her to stay awake.

He quickly kneeled down by her side. She coughed, blood coming with it.

"Do me a favor" she whispered, clearly in pain. The teen nodded quickly. "Take care of the children."

And of course he would. If she didn't make it, he would take care of the children. If it meant leaving the magic knights, then he would. She took the blow for him after all. It was the least he could do. He'd visit his parents now and then, teach the children how to read and write. He'd do whatever they needed him to do.

And maybe Yuno would even help him. He had said that he grew up in a church, taking care of the younger children sometimes. He would be a great help.

He didn't notice how the attacker was aiming for him again. Only when he heard a slash he turned around.

"Dad" he grinned, standing up.

Yami stood a few feet away from him, his katana held out ready to slash again. He was smoking, like always, and didn't look pleased at all.

"Yo, I don't know who you think you are, but I'm the only one who's allowed to kill my brat" he said.

Asta laughed. That was his father alright. He didn't really mean it. It was just something he tended to say whenever any of them got into trouble. That they weren't allowed to die.

"When did you get here?" he asked.

"Just a moment ago. My ride was late" he gestured towards Finral.

The spatial mage laughed awkwardly, waving at them. The next second Gauche yelled at him to get Theresa out of there. Finral complied, bringing all three of them away. Dad yelled at him to come back though. Finral probably would.

His glee was cut short though, when he felt another one of the light spears go right through his leg. God, that hurt.

"Oi, what did I just say? Who even are you?" Dad yelled.

Asta finally saw who attacked them. It was a man. He looked young. Somewhere around his twenties. His white hair was separated into several braids. Even his lashes were white. Weird red markings were around his golden eyes.

He was holding Sally. She was slightly awake, apologizing for failing the man. He gently smiled down at her. Saying that it was okay, not her fault.

Another man beside him opened a portal beneath them. Asta remembered him from the attack in the capital. His name was Valtos. The stranger slowly dropped Sally into the portal. Asta noticed how she looked at him one last time.

"My name is Licht. And I do not tolerate that you hurt my comrades" he said.

Asta scoffed. He wasn't okay with them hurting her? She was attacking them to begin with. Thy only protected themselves. Of course she would get hurt.

And then Lichts eyes fell onto his Grimoire. His eyes widened. And then a mysterious smile came onto his lips. That wasn't good right?

"Oh. Maybe I shouldn't get rid of you" he mused.

That was even worse right?

Yami raised his sword at Licht. A scowl on his face. "You stay away from my kid, you hear me?"

Asta took a step back. His Dad was obviously angry. And it was never a good idea to mess with Dad when he was angry. He had always been protective of him. Even more when he had met the guy in the woods. The guy that gave him his Grimoire.

"I guess we'll see about that. Light magic against dark magic. Always wanted to try that" Licht said, a mysterious glee in his eyes.

"Asta" Yami didn't even look back at him. Eyes fixed on the opponent ahead, waiting for him to make a move.

"Yeah?" the teen already had both of his swords ready. He knew where this was going. During the last weeks Asta had trained with his father. Sometimes they even trained as a team against some of Mom's squad.

"You stay back. When Finral comes you go with him" he said.

"But Dad-"

"No buts. You stay back!"

Asta nibbled on his lower lip. Dad has never asked him to stay back. Never told him to keep out of a fight. He didn't really know what to do in this situation. Usually, Dad told him to stay focused.

But he had a feeling that it was better to just listen to him. So instead, he moved into a far corner of the cave. He still kept an eye on the spatial mage. The teen was sure that he would try something if he didn't watch him.

And he knew Valtos noticed. Because he felt the Ki of the mage close to him. Meaning he tried to open a portal somewhere around him. He probably hoped to hit him at some point.

The fight was intense. Asta had problems keeping up with their fast movements. It seemed like Licht could teleport himself with his magic. While Yami just moved really fast. Concentration never faltering.

Watching with concentration, Asta only noticed how bad it had gotten when the light magic began to fill the entire space. Now this was bad. He wouldn't be able to block that spell with his swords. It was to huge.

They were saved though when Finral came back, along with Gauche. He already looked better.

Gauche immediately stood and uncovered his eye once again. The 'full reflection' spell was enough to block the attack and send it right back at Licht.

Asta thought that this was it. That it was enough to knock him out. Licht fell to the ground.

"Take that you bastard" Gauche grumbled.

Dad laughed, patting him on the head. While searching for his binding spell, Asta heard Licht mumbling something.

And then Asta realized his mistake. He had stopped watching Valtos. He looked around, but the spatial mage was nowhere to be seen. Until three people stepped out of a portal.

To him, they were almost as creepy as Sally. Licht introduced them as Fana, Rhya and Vetto. Copy magic, fire magic with a spirit and beast magic.

And this time Asta was sure that this was it. They were even, but he could feel it. Especially with the girl having fire spirit magic. Which she immediately shot at them. He wouldn't get there in time. And Dad couldn't keep them at bay forever.

The teen closed his eyes, sword gripped in his hands and held out in front of him. All he could do right now.

But nothing happened. Opening his eyes, Asta was faced with familiar magic. He grinned. All of the magic knight captains were there. How they got there so fast wasn't important to him.

"Mom" he grinned, turning towards his mother.

Charlotte turned towards her son, frowning when she saw the cuts on his body. She turned to Yami.

"I leave you alone with him and he gets into trouble" she scoffed. "And what is this?" she shrieked, noticing the large wound in his leg.

"Mom that's nothing. That's how fights go" he assured her.

"Yesh, calm down. He's fine. Just scratches" Yami said.

"There is a hole in his leg" she said, lifting the limb up. Asta had to balance on his other leg while Charlotte showed the wound to his father.

"Yeah, scratches" Oh he was dead.

Asta knew that this would have consequences for him later. Maybe she'd even let the enemy hit him a few times. Charlotte groaned at his answer.

And then all hell broke loose. Spells flying everywhere. The only thing he remembered was how he hit Licht right in the side, giving his father the chance to finally take him out.

After that, all of them retreated.

While yelling at Dad, Mom dragged him off to the next healer. She had also yelled at Finral to open a portal.

Maybe he should wait until his wounds are healed for once.
