Part 1 Isidore Levinson
1888, Cincinnati, OH
Isidor loved his daughter very much so upon hearing his wife's decision to send her to London to marry made him terribly upset. His daughter, Cora was a kind young woman. She loved fully and to be with a man that could potentially never be in love with her would be tragic. He told Martha as such, but she was still determined use to give Cora position since she believed it wouldn't happen in America. Isidore had reluctantly agreed because of the discrimination their family received because of their religion. He decided that it would be better if no one knew at all. Martha thought the son of the Earl of Grantham would be perfect for Cora. He said she should tell them of their background because he did not want Cora to face prejudice alone in an unknown country. There was a knock on his office door . He got up curious as he had no more appointments foe the day.
"Hello, Abba," Cora said when the door opened.
He smiled. "Hello, my daughter, please come in," he replied noticing that she'd been crying. "What is it?"
"I suppose you and Mama made the decision for me to go to London. Mama has bought our passage on the next ship. I am to leave on Friday. I don't want to leave you, Abba. How can I leave all I know to marry a man I have never met before?" Remember my good daughter you will never be alone; God will be with you always and my love will follow you wherever you go."
Cora smiled giving him a hug. "I will do my best to be strong as you have taught me Abba."
Part 2 Martha Levinson
Martha only wanted what was best for her daughter, but she just couldn't see Cora as a middle class wife in Midwest America. She had explained to her husband that she planned to bring Cora to Britain to marry their daughter into a very distinguished family living in Yorkshire. He wasn't agreeable worried about the man who would be his son in law, but Martha reassured him that she met the family while visiting her close childhood friend in London. they stayed at the man's sister's home, so she spent plenty of time. He seemed charming to her and spoke to his mother about bringing Cora over for the London season. As soon as it was confirmed, she booked passage. She then hired a ladies' maid for them both to travel. Cora was very much against this all, but her child was extremely romantic and always dreamed of falling in love one day. Martha had no doubt that it would happen eventually if she was patient. She was happy when Cora returned looking less angry after having spoken to Isidore. She would be fine.
She jumped when the front door slammed opened. "Mother, what are we doing for dinner tonight?"
She sighed well she hadn't been blessed with two perfect children. "Harold, we are going out to dinner as a bon voyage for your sister so quit yelling and stomping around the house and get dressed!"
"How can you just ship Cora away to marry a man she doesn't know?"
"Harold, leave Mama alone. It's been decided. I'll be fine."
Part 3 Cora Levinson
Cora became more nervous as they got closer to her new life. They would be going to the home of Robert Crawley's sister (her future sister in law), Rosamond. Mama got on with all of them so well and she was the most brash one of the family so maybe Cora would be all right. Lady Rosamond was kind. She even sent her ladies' maid to Cora's room to help her dress for the ball. She was also kind enough to explain what was expected during the ball. Robert wouldn't be arriving until that day so she still wouldn't be able to speak to him for a while yet, but Lady Rosamond told her about their family and her brother's personality. Cora tried to think positively but when it was mentioned that Robert was as English as they come, her stomach dropped. Most Englishmen, as she heard were hard pressed to express their feelings to someone let alone a stranger.
As the days moved on, Cora attended fancy luncheons and dinner at the Ritz with Robert's parents, The Earl and Countess of Grantham which would one day be their titles. How grand it all was, much grander than her farewell dinner in Cincinnati.
Part 4 Robert Crawley
He wasn't so certain about marrying an American girl, but after speaking to his father, he understood, it was the only way to save their home. Rosamond sent him a letter describing the girl and he started to feel better hoping that he could fall in love. He wasn't sure what all this rigamarole was for. They would officially meet at the ball on Friday, but his parents had dinner with her and her mother. Robert headed downstairs to find Mr. Carson to make sure all the travel arrangements were ready.
Robert took a quick walk before dinner, ate with his grandmama, then headed up to bed after she left. "Watson, wake me up at 7:00," he requested once he was ready for bed.
"Certainly, Mister Robert," Valet replied.
When Robert arrived at Rosamond's home, he saw many familiar faces all getting everything together for the big dinner after the ball this evening. "Robert," His Papa called. "May I present Mrs. Martha Levinson from America."
He realized he was being introduced to hid future mother in law. He nodded, Placing a kiss on the hand that was offered. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Levinson.'
She smiled, "I know."
Part 5 First meeting
Robert waited patiently for Ms. Levinson to arrive. "There she is, Robert," Patrick said, nodding towards the door. Robert turned and saw a young woman with brown curly locks and an infectious smile. Her small figure was perfect in every way. He nodded to his father and walked over to meet this beauty. He bowed, introducing himself, taking her hand to kiss it. She smiled warmly and it made his heart beat a little faster. "It's a pleasure to meet you Mr. Crawley," she said.
He was never a fan of American accents, but she spoke musically. "Please, call me Robert," he told her.
Cora was quite enamored with Robert Crawley when he introduced himself. He had the most beautiful blue eyes she'd ever seen and felt as though she would drown in them. She couldn't bear to dance with anyone else but him that night and was thrilled when he felt the same. Cora never had luck with men, the two men she thought had liked her made a bet that the "Jewish" girl would kiss him first but neither ever cared for her. It's what she had been so reluctant to meet Robert. Was he only interested in marrying her for her money? Or will he end up liking if not loving her in the end?
Part 6 Going Home
March 1890, London, and Yorkshire
Almost two weeks after their Honeymoon, Cora and Robert Crawley stayed with Rosamond before returning to Yorkshire. From what Cora understood they would move to Downton after Lord Grantham passed. It felt almost morbid to her to await his death like this but wait they did. The couple were reading in the drawing room when Rosamond rushed in holding a telegram. It was from Mama and very urgent. "I'm afraid we must return," she told Robert. He nodded and went up to get his things while Rosamond rushed to find her butler to see about train tickets and helping with the packing.
Meanwhile Cora remained seated, not sure what to do. She stood up, determined to make certain was all right. He had been there for her when she learned of her father's death when they were in Rome. She went up and knocked on the door, opening after his permission to enter. He stood at the window staring down at the streets of London.
"Robert?" she said, walking over to him and wrapping her arms around, Laying her head on his back. "I'm here my darling."
He turned to face her, hugging her close. "I know," he replied. "I was thinking about the first time he brought me to London. I was ten at the time and a naughty chap."
Cora chuckled. "Why does that not surprise me? What did you do?"
"Well, I a hot day and decided to take a swim in the Venus fountain across from where Rosamond lives. It wouldn't have been too much a problem if I had left my clothes on. Papa was so embarrassed."
"Oh, I can imagine a rather skinny 10 year old running around naked in London. I suppose you received a smack on your naked bottom for that."
"I did indeed."
Part 7 Not a Year (mature)
March 1891
"Which, if I remember correctly was about a year after we were married."
"Not a year, not as long as all that." - Cora and Robert, season 1, episode 3
After dinner Robert was reading in the library, mama having left early. He noticed Cora was quietly staring at the crackling fire. setting his book down he walked over, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Are you okay, my darling?"
She nodded, but the sadness in her eyes betrayed her. "What is it?"
"Mama was asking when we would have children again. I didn't dare say that you've been sleeping in a separate room and bed."
"Oh, I am sorry for being such a disappointing husband. I just wasn't sure you would want me in the same room, let alone bed."
"Of course I do," she replied. "I love you."
That's just it, darling. You love me and I would feel dishonest sharing a bed with you... until now."
"What are you saying Robert?"
"You were willing to keep the secret that we haven't been together since the honeymoon from Mama for my sake when I should have told her many times over."
Cora smiled, amazed by the generosity of this man. He was willing to lie in a bed with her despite not being in love, but it may have changed, at least she hoped so.
"Let's go for a walk there's a perfect view of the sunset on the west side of the estate."
As they walked, Cora's eyes moved across the beautiful landscape of her home. the sun sank further towards the horizon, and she gasped at the mixtures of reds, yellows and oranges turning into purples and blue as daylight waned.
The stars started poking through the dark sky. It was so quite different from night in Cincinnati. the constellations her teacher mentioned were larger than life here. She could stare at the sky all night despite the chill out there. Without saying a word, Cora dropped to her knees then laid on her back in the cool grass.
"Good heavens!" Robert exclaimed, thinking she fell. "What happened?"
She giggled. "Just admiring the view," she told him. he followed her gaze toward the sky, smiled and laid beside her. "My dearest Cora," he said reaching for her hand. "I have fallen so deeply in love with you. Your beauty, your grace, your strength have been incomparable. I am only sorry I didn't see any of that sooner."
"I believe you did but did not want to admit it."
"You may be right if only to prove Mama wrong. She never liked to admit when she is. but I believe that we will do so one day, but first, May I make love to you?"
Cora nodded. "of course, Robert," she replied, getting to her feet. then running back towards the house laughing.
Robert laughed as well, chasing her. She entered the library; Robert close behind just as Carson opened the door in confusion and giving them a look. "Milord?"
Sorry, Carson, we're heading up to bed now."
"Very well," he replied with a nod.
Once they were upstairs and standing in front of their respective doors they busted out laughing again.
"Milord," Cora said mimicking Carson's deep voice then went into her room.
Of course Robert couldn't keep a straight face after that. "Sorry, Carson. I've just had an exceptionally good evening."
"That is good, Milord."
"Milady, are you all right?"
I'm great, why O'Brien?"
"Your face is red. Are you sure you don't have a fever?"
She sat down at the vanity. She felt her cheeks grow hot when Robert had been lying beside her in the grass then after their jog back inside and up the stairs.
"I'm fine, thank you. Truly!"
"Is there anything else?"
"No, thank you. Good night."
O'Brien nodded and left as Robert knocked on the door. "May I come in, Milady?"
"Please do, Milord.'
Robert did and sat on the bed. "What in heavens name are you doing, Cora?" he asked watching her pick things from her hair.
"Removing the pins O'Brien stabbed into my head to keep it from falling."
"Do you need help?"
"Only if you want to, darling." Robert grinned and moved to stand behind her. He had difficulty locating these pins while Cora had a stack of them on the vanity. "How many are in there? I can't see them.
"Well they blend in with my hair," She said, pulling the last two out effortlessly causing her hair to cascade down her back. Robert moved her hair to the side and began placing kisses along her neck.
"Come to bed my darling," he whispered helping her up.
"I'll be there in a moment, go on."
Robert watched as Cora put her hair into a braid. She turned to face him removing her dressing gown. He grinned like a child in a candy store. The night gown was short and well above her knees. Cora hopped onto the bed, placing her legs on either side of his body, and stared down at him, smiling.
Her braid, fell off her shoulder and tickled his nose. Robert couldn't hold in his sneeze, and they hit heads, causing Cora to tumble from the bed. He jumped up immediately, worried he hurt her. She didn't move or say anything as he knelt. He placed a hand on her back , realizing she was laughing, not crying. "That's not funny!" he said with a serious expression.
She sat up looking at him. "I'm all right, are you?"
Robert noticed small bump over her left eye. He gently kissed it. Cora crossed her arms. "Is that all I get for my troubles?"
He lifted her up and placed her on the bed slipping his hands under her night dress. She licked her lips and it drove Robert wild as he moved to straddle her. Cora moaned, her lips meeting his.
"Oh Robert..."
"My beautiful Cora..."
Part 8 We're having a baby
Cora had been exhausted the past few days. She was still sleeping when Robert got up, in fact she didn't even hear him get up. She swung her legs from the bed and went to stand to ring for O'Brien. She barely took a step when everything began to swim in and out of focus.
Carson told Robert that Cora had yet to ring for O'Brien and she didn't see her in the room. He ran up taking two steps at a time.
"Cora?" he called. He paused when he heard a quiet moan. "Cora?"
"Robert?" He went to her side of the bed and found her on the floor, looking around in confusion. she accepted his hand as he helped her sit up. "What happened?"
"You don't know?" he asked, concern on his face. "I'll call Dr Clarkson. Let me help you to bed first he said. Once Cora was standing, she felt dizzy and began to sway. She closed her eyes, holding tightly to his arm. "I'm going to be sick," she said.
Robert helped her to the restroom where she stood taking several deep breaths before the wave went away.
"Cora?"
"I'm fine for now," she said, voice shaky.
"Now sit, I'll contact the doctor. He settled her and picked up the garbage can. "Just in case he said with a small smile. He gave a kiss on her forehead and reluctantly left the room. He hated medical situations, but this was about Cora.
All Robert could do was pace in the library with a glass of whiskey while he waited for Clarkson to examine his wife.
Carson entered with tea. "Milord, Mrs. Patmore thought tea would be good and perhaps some sandwiches."
"Thank her for me." he replied as the door opened and Clarkson entered. He was new to the hospital having taken over for the man who treated him as a child.
"Doctor?" he said accepting a cup of tea from Barrow, one of the hall boys who had just been promoted.
"Congratulations are in order, Lord Grantham. You're going to be a father!"
Robert smiled. "Is Lady Grantham okay?"
"She's feeling better now. Woman can get lightheaded when pregnant. She'll need rest and quiet. She may faint again, but I'll keep an eye on her with regular checkups throughout the months."
"How far along?" he asked.
"I'd say about four months along."
"Carson, I'll be joining her ladyship in her room." Robert said, picking up the tray."
"I'll bring that, Milord."
Carson handed Robert the tray. "Anything else?"
"No, We should be fine, thank you."
"May I come in?" he asked.
"Please do, darling."
Cora was lying in bed and there was a beautiful color to her cheeks.
"You are glowing my dearest one," He said, sitting on the edge of the bed. "I was so worried when I found you on the floor. Just think, in five months we'll have a little one."
Part 9 Mary Josephine
July 1891
Robert rushed back from London when he received a call from Carson that Cora was in labor. He arrived at the hospital moments after she gave birth. Doctor Clarkson said the delivery went well and he was now the father of a healthy and beautiful little girl. just as he was about to enter the room to meet his little girl. "Robert! May I meet my grandchild?"
"Of course, Mama, but please don't be unkind to Cora. It's a girl."
"'Then step aside so I can meet my granddaughter!"
Cora smiled at the little bundle in her arms. She was so beautiful. Tears fell as she imagined her daughter's life unfurl in her mind. Brains and Beauty. Cora wanted only the best for her little one.
She looked up when the door opened to see Mama enter, Robert close behind with an apologetic look on his face. "Hello, Mama," she said with a smile. She was so happy that the thought of argument today was the last thing on her mind.
"Meet your granddaughter, Mary Josephine." Violet looked down at the little girl, a rare smile on her face. Cora honestly had never seen it before.
"Congratulations, Cora, she's precious."
Robert finally made his way over to Cora's side. He waited to see if he had to play referee, but luckily Mama behaved herself.
Part 10
Cora accepted the letter Carson handed to her and went out to sit on the bench just outside the library to read it.
"My Dearest Cora,
It is with great sadness that I write to you of the death of your cousin, Margaret, and her husband. They left behind a little girl who is beyond sweet, and you have been announced as her guardian. My sister, your Aunt Elizabeth is not fighting this as you are her godchild and knew how much Maggie loved you. I'm not certain if Robert will agree to it, but I shall bring Sarah Grace to Downton within a months' time to give you a chance to talk to your husband.
Love, Mama
Cora cried softly for her cousin. Maggie or Mags as Cora called her was like a sister to her. They did everything together. They used to get into so much trouble.
"Cora?" Robert called from inside.
She wiped her tears. "I'm out here, Robert!"
"Ah, darling, are you up for visitors tomorrow?"
She smiled, nodding
Robert noticed her smile didn't reach her eyes. "Is everything all right?" he asked.
She wordlessly handed him the letter. "Cora, I'm sorry about your cousin. Are you sure taking in her child is the right decision with Mary?"
"Oh, Robert, I loved my cousin and I she is trusting me with her child. please don't make me say no."
"It may not be me, but Mama."
"I love you darling, but this is not her home anymore. it is ours and were adult enough to make our own decisions."
He sighed. He couldn't refuse her he found. "Very well, Let's take Sarah in."
"Thank you," she said, kissing him. Robert rolled his eyes at himself, thinking if he couldn't refuse her, how could he ever refuse his daughter?
Part 11
The day finally came despite Mama's insistence they should change their minds, but little Sarah would be arriving within the hour. Cora placed a hand on her stomach, another reason Mama tried to change her mind. After confirming, Cora found out she was pregnant again and decided to let her mother know upon her arrival.
Violet said, "I should hate surprises, and this would have been the worse especially if a boy was not had."
Cora took to her room and remained there for several days upset. It took some convincing, but Robert was able to get her out and they enjoyed an evening walk before the Americans took 'Downton by storm' as Mama said.
Robert and Robert and Cora stood outside to greet their guests. She smiled at her mother who stared at her for a few minutes in shock. "Oh, My Cora!" She said, giving her a hug. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Surprise, Mother!" just then a little girl peered around Martha inspecting Robert and Cora. She looked like Mags at that age. Cora's eyes welled with tears. "Hello, Sarah," she said. "I'm your Mama's cousin, Cora.
Sarah waved then toddled to Robert. He knelt in front of her. "Hello!"
"Hi! Are you friends with Cousin Cora."
"I am!" he said with a smile.
Sarah excitedly jumped into his arms, almost knocking him over.
"Milord!" Carson exclaimed.
"No worries, Carson, I'm fine. Ms. Sarah just got a bit excited, right my dear?"
"Yes, I'm sorry Mr...?"
"Robert."
Ribit?" Cora chuckled
Robert didn't seem to care. "It's quite all right."
Part 12 Edith Violet
Early 1892
Cora flipped through her book, not really reading it. Tea was over and she was waiting for Nanny to bring Mary and Sarah down. She heard them before she saw them. "Mama!"
"Yes, Mary?"
'It's not fair!" she cried then rushed at Sarah, tackling her to the floor.
"Mary Josephine that wasn't very nice," Cora said "Apologize to Sarah."
"No! She's not my sister!"
"No, she's your cousin and that can be just as important. You won't act like that with the baby in my belly, will you?"
Only if she's not nice," Mary responded. then she glared at her mother. "I hate you!"
"See, what did I tell you, Cora?" Violet said coming into the room. Of course she heard everything. "It was not a good idea to take someone else's child in. "Cora felt pain in her lower abdomen and let out a gasp. Sarah wiping her tears, went up to her, taking her hand. "Are you ok cousin Cora?' she asked. "Do you want me to find Mr. Ribit?"
"Yes please, ask Mr. Carson."
Sarah nodded and went out to the hall as Cora sank onto the couch, holding her stomach. The pain was getting stronger by the time Robert arrived, yelling for Carson to have the car pulled around.
"Cora," he said, sitting beside her. She didn't acknowledge him as she was concentrating on breathing through pain. He was finally able to help her up and they went to the door. Carson and Thomas helped get her into the car and they drove off.
Cora was put into a private room and Robert was allowed to see her for a few minutes before delivery.
"I very much hope we'll have a son I hate to think I've disappointed you and Mama again."
"Please don't think like that, Cora," he said, Pulling her into a hug. "I love you and I will love all my children, daughters or sons. If it isn't meant to so be it.
Dr Clarkson entered. "Lord Grantham, if you would kindly wait outside?"
He nodded giving Cora a kiss. "Be strong, my darling."
Robert sat in a chair just outside the door. He wanted to be as close to Cora as he could. Something had seemed off since he found her in pain in the library. She let out a horrible cry that made him wince, his heart skipping a beat in fear. Suddenly the door opened Two people left, while another three entered. Then the best sound ever, the cry of a baby. He watched for the door to open again and waited to be invited in, but he wasn't. "No!" Clarkson said, we must stop the bleeding first or she'll not make it! Hurry!"
"Cora..." he whispered with fear.
Part 13
1895,Mary = 5 Sarah = 5 Edith= 4
Cora went to speak with Mary at the request of Nanny. It appears her eldest had taken to become haughty towards her cousin and sister. She sighed hoping for a quiet pregnancy this time around. she entered the nursery to see Mary and Edith playing with their dolls.
"Mary, darling, could you come and sit with Mama for a bit?" She smiled bounding over and climbing next to her on the bed.
"Yes, Mama?"
"Are you being mean to Edith and Sarah?"
"No. I just said they should listen because I'm the oldest and I'm going to own Downton one day!"
"Mary..." she began. How could she explain English laws and entails to a 4 year old? When she was older and could understand, she'll be crushed. She loved Downton. "Mary, that doesn't mean you can boss everyone around especially not now. Only Nanny, Papa, and I can do that because we love you. "She seemed
"NO! You're so American, Mama! You shouldn't be here!"
Cora stared at her daughter, wondering where she heard that from. "Who told you that?"
"Mr. Givens at the toy store. Nanny took us there. "Edith got up and went over to Cora. "Don't be mean, Mary, mama is perfect and kind.
Robert was changed and almost asleep when Cora entered with O'Brien behind her. When she spoke she sounded sad and defeated making him wonder if Mama was at it again about a grandson.
"Good night, milady" then the door shut.
"Robert you can get up, O'Brien is gone. He sat up looking at Cora. She looked healthier this pregnancy and she was absolutely glowing, but he could detect some sadness in her eyes tonight. "Come here, my dearest one," he said holding his hand out to her. She went over and pouted as she sat.
"Whatever is the matter?"
"I'm so huge!" Robert chuckled. "It's not funny! I can barely fit in the car. you may as well just roll me down the back hill to get to the village. It would certainly be faster!"
Early the next morning there was a knock on Robert's dressing room door. "One moment, Milord," Carson said.
Carson returned and Robert rushed to see if Cora was ready. "Come in."
"Morning, darling," she said. tuning she saw a grim look on his face. "What is it?"
"Sarah is ill."
"I should go check on her."
"Nanny is going to bring her to see Clarkson. She thinks it could be pneumonia and you shouldn't be near her in your condition."
Part 14 Ms. Sarah
3 days later
Cora sank into bed feeling completely and emotionally drained. She waited at home for hours to get an update on Sarah until finally Robert came home to say she was gone. Cora didn't get to be with her but at least she wasn't alone.
Robert came in, removed his dressing gown, and crawled in beside her. "I'm so sorry, Cora. I know how much you wanted to be there. Sarah understood, though. She didn't want to get you or the baby sick."
"Oh my sweet," she cried, moving closer to her husband. Robert pulled her into his arms and held her close as she sobbed in his chest. After a moment, she lifted her head and gave him a soft kiss on his lips. "Thank you for being there for her, I'm sure she was scared.
"She told me she wasn't because she was going to see her Mama and said how much she loved you."
"oh!"
"Cora?"
"The baby kicked she said", placing his hand on her stomach. He laughed. "She seems feisty."
Part 15 Sybil Cora
April 1895
"Thomas, have you seen Lady Mary? "Carson asked.
"I'm not that child's keeper. Have you asked Nanny?"
"If she knew, do you think I'd be asking you? His Lordship would like her to meet the new baby."
"What's so special about another girl?" Thomas asked. I'm surprised the Dowager Countess hasn't disowned Lady Grantham for not continuing the line with a son!"
"Have you no respect? "Carson growled in anger.
"Goodness, Mr. Carson, calm down or you'll give yourself an ulcer," Mrs. Hughes said. Oh and you have a visitor in your office.
He raised an eyebrow and entered. "There, sitting on a chair, with a small bag on the floor was Lady Mary.
What can I do for you? "He asked.
She hopped off the chair. "Mr. Carson, I've decided to run away and wondered if I could take some of the silver with me to sell."
"That could be awkward for his Lordship," He said, "What about a crown instead?"
"Very well," she said. "But you must be sure to charge me interest." she went over to him grabbed his lapel and pulled him towards her, giving him a kiss on his cheek. "How's that?"
"Full payment." Carson replied, patting the child on the cheek. "Now, Please go to the library, her ladyship is home with your sister, and they would like you to meet her."
Mary sighed. "Very well, could you see that my things are returned to the nursery?"
"Certainly, Milady!"
Part 16 Sisterly bonds
Mary quietly entered the library. "She's so cute!" Edith whispered in wonder. Mary wasn't so certain. Edith had once looked like a currant when she was a baby.
"There you are, my darling," Cora said when she saw Mary. "Sybil is so excited to meet her big sister.
Mary climbed onto the settee and looked at Sybil. She was a cute baby! "Oh, Mama!" she said. "I love her!"
Edith pouted, stomping her foot. "You never say that to me!"
"Well, you bother me too much."
Cora sighed. "Mary, that's unkind. Don't be rude. Especially to your sister."
Robert came in and smiled. "My four beautiful ladies all in one place, how splendid!"
Mary walked over to him and held out her arms to be picked up. Robert obliged and sat beside Cora
"Papa, are you sure?"
"Sure about what my darling?"
"That you want us?"
"What sort of question is that? Of course I do!"
"I thought you wanted a boy instead," She said sadly.
Edith nodded. "That's what we heard Mr. Barrow say."
Robert glanced back at Carson, who nodded and left the room. Cora reached for Robert's hand, tears welling in her eyes. It was difficult enough for her to hear that but her daughters.
"Well, don't listen to him, my darlings, I love my daughters dearly. You weren't meant to have a brother, but that's all right. I have mt three daughters and you all have one another."
"Yes," Cora replied. "It's important for you to love and care for each other."
Part 17 Wartime
Oct 1899, Boer War begins
Mary , 8, Edith, 6, Sybil, 4
Cora tossed and turned. She couldn't sleep after the announcement that Robert was conscripted to fight in the Boer War. Ever since Britain made the ultimatum with the Boers she feared the day he would receive the letter. She had gone to bed because she felt sick to her stomach after dinner. Just the thought of Robert getting injured or not coming home alive scared her so much she couldn't eat. How would she explain this to her daughters? The door from the dressing room cracked open and Robert entered. "Cora? Are you awake my darling?"
"Yes," she answered trying not to let him know she'd been crying. He was quick climbing into bed and once he pulled her close, so his arm was around her. She broke and began to cry.
"Shh," he said. "Don't cry my dearest one."
"I'm scared Robert, I can't lose you. What would mama do? She'll send me back to America where I'd be a laughingstock."
"No she won't! Maybe she can't admit it, but she adores you, as much as I do, Cora."
"You're full of it! When do you leave?"
"I'm to report to Ripon next week where I'll be assigned my batman and get in some training for a few weeks before heading down.
"We should tell the girls tomorrow. Is Mama coming for tea?"
"I did ask her to stop by so yes."
Part 18 High anxiety
February 16, 1901
The past two years, Cora felt anxious and stressed, She lost a lot of weight she hadn't heard from her husband in months She didn't let her concern and worry known to Violet but received a letter from Rosamond stating she wanted to come and stay with a friend. So now Cora had to meet with Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Patmore as well as entertain her sister in law, and some random woman, when all she wanted to do was see her husband and feel his arms around her. She only had one day more of peace and quiet until they arrived.
Mrs. Hughes glanced at Beryl as her ladyship left the room. "I don't believe she's well, Mrs. Patmore."
"I don't think so either. Is there no one even around to notice besides us? What about the Dowager?"
"She's kept to herself since his Lordship shipped off."
The two women were about to leave but not before making a pact to take care of the Countess of Grantham themselves. There was a knock on the door and Carson poked his head in. "How is her ladyship doing?"
"Not well, Mr. Carson? Have you seen her today?"
"I have not."
"She's lost a lot of weight, very pale, and I almost thought she was going to collapse she seemed so frail. We thought that perhaps we should contact Mrs. Levinson to come and stay."
"She already is coming."
"What?"
"Lady Rosamond is bringing her. Ladies Mary and Edith wrote to her themselves and asked to invite their grandmother."
"Well, I never. What sweet children."
Part 19 The Soldier
Robert sighed, as he attempted to fall asleep. He missed having Cora lying beside him and he wondered how much longer this campaign would take. In another two years Mary would be a teenager and Sybil would barely know him. There was a loud bang that He shouldn't have been so close to basecamp.
"Bates?"
"Yes, Sir?"
"What's going on?"
"Basecamp is under siege," he replied.
Robert, got up and dressed, grabbing a few essentials on the way out.
It was absolute chaos out there. He followed Bates through the camp only to have to stop when a bullet tore through his shoulder. Robert fell to the ground, gripping his shoulder. "Lieutenant!" Robert blinked. He must have passed out. "Bates, what's going on?"
"The Skirmish is over, and we won," Bates answered helping him up.
"Bullocks!" Robert exclaimed when he realized he tried to staunch the blood with the photo of his family. Glancing at Bates, he suddenly became panicked over how they were doing as he hadn't heard from Cora in a while. Instead he took several breaths to calm himself and lost consciousness again.
Part 20 I'm here for you
May, 1902
The next morning, despite being exhausted, Cora woke up early.
"Milady, are you certain you wouldn't like to sleep a bit longer?" O'Brien asked.
"I would love to if only I could actually fall asleep. I Should have said no to Lady Rosamond. I am just not in the mood to entertain anyone," She explained, tears slipping from her eyes. She couldn't prevent or stop them. instead she turned to O'Brien and hugged the woman tightly as she cried."
The only thing O'Brien could do was hold her. "Shh, milady, I'm sure you'll hear from his Lordship soon."
After a few minutes, Cora realized what she was doing and took a breath, wiping her tears. "I am so sorry, O'Brien," she said. "Please forgive me."
"Nonsense, Milady. there is no need to apologize. I know it seems like it, but you're not alone. All of us downstairs are here for you. I mean it."
"Thank you, O'Brien."
Once Cora had calmed enough, eaten breakfast, and had some tea, she joined her daughters in the library before greeting their guests. "They have arrived, Milady."
"Thank you, Carson," She said, taking Sybil's hand.
Cora saw Rosamond but was stunned by her guest. "Mother," she whispered.
"My sweet, Cora," Martha said, Pulling her into a hug. Cora let her mother keep her upright as she cried.
"Darling, why didn't you tell me to come? You don't look well; you should see a doctor."
"Oh, Mama I just. I thought I was stronger than this."
"You would have been if someone had been there for you," she answered glaring at Violet. "Your daughters summoned me, and I am grateful."
The women all went into the drawing room. Martha sat beside Cora choosing not to say a word to Violet since her daughter seemed to be in such a fragile condition. She watched her three granddaughters happy to know that Robert being gone hadn't affected them too badly.
Cora laid back, closing her eyes. She was so tired, and her head was pounding. Martha saw Mary and Edith looking at her worriedly. "Cora?" She suddenly leaned forward, grasping her head in pain, and crying out.
Part 21
Robert entered the hospital. He was told by the head of the medical Corp to see his local physician once he returned home to check his stitches and look for any sign of infection. A nurse walked up to him. "Welcome home, Lord Grantham. I'm afraid Dr Clarkson isn't available right now; he's making a house call."
"Thank you,
I can come back later."
"Very well, we have an opening at 2 this afternoon,"
"Excellent! I'll be back then."
What Robert didn't know was that the house call was happening in his home. No one knew he was returning; it was going to be a surprise. He opened the door and saw Carson coming towards him.
"Carson! It's jolly good to see you!"
"I'm sorry, Milord, we would have sent a car for you had we known you were coming."
"Oh, don't worry about all that. I didn't send a telegram. I wanted to surprise her Ladyship and my daughters. Where are they?"
"In her Ladyship's room, but you may want to wait a moment, milord."
Before Robert could answer he heard a familiar voice but one who should be at least an ocean away.
"Oh, Robert, how wonderful to see you again," Martha said giving him a hug.
"When did you arrive?" he asked.
"Earlier today. I received an urgent letter from your sister and my granddaughters."
"Is Cora all right?" he asked worriedly.
"Dr. Clarkson is with her right now but he will be down shortly, so he'll tell you."
That didn't displace all the worrisome thoughts in Robert's mind.
"I just want to say that I am completely disappointed in Violet. She had the nerve to leave Cora alone and had her paying calls to charities in Violet's place. Meanwhile she hasn't eaten or slept in weeks due to all the stress and anxiety. She had to resort to being comforted by your servants! Thank God for them my daughter is still with us."
Robert didn't know what to say to Martha's outburst, but he couldn't believe Mama would treat Cora like this. He knew she wasn't her biggest fan but to do to leave the woman he loved on her own like that. She would never!
The door opened and Dr. Clarkson went up to him. "Lord Grantham. I'm sure you're concerned for Lady Grantham? he asked, then continued at the earl's nod. "She was so overwhelmed, anxious that she didn't feel hungry. just eating seemed to make her nauseous. She felt anxious at not hearing from you and stress from the daily life as a Countess. I daresay that with you here things are less of a struggle for her," the doctor added.
Robert nodded in understanding, feeling extremely guilty for putting Cora in this situation. "May I see her?"
"I highly recommend it."
Robert smiled awkwardly and entered with a knock. Cora and Sybil were lying on the bed, his daughter fast asleep. Mary and Edith greeted him happily with hugs. Once they were gone, he went to the empty chair beside Cora, getting a good look at her. She seemed pale and frail and her blue eyes seemed dull, no longer bright. She had yet to look at or even acknowledge him.
'Cora," he began. Finally her head snapped up and she squeezed her eyes shut. "Oh Robert are you going to haunt me now? I ruined your life and now that James is the new Earl, I suppose I'll back to America. Your Mama will be happy to be rid of me. It's better this way, isn't it? I don't know where I belong anymore, and Mary is completely against coming with me if I do go. I don't know if Sybil will resent me for taking her there when she gets older. I don't know how Edith feels."
"Cora, My darling, Cora, I'm still alive, I'm home! I don't plan to leave you ever again. Not ever! You belong here, you are my Countess , my Love, my Angel, the mother of my beautiful daughters and that's all that matters to me. No one will ever take your place or take you away from me!"
"I love you, as I've told you many times. I have been writing you every day since I was in south Africa only to be told that most of our mail trains were attacked and it was likely they were never delivered. I am sorry you had to go through it all alone."
"Robert, don't apologize for something you couldn't control. You had to fight, and it was not your fault the trains were attacked. You know what seeing you has done to me?"
"What?" he asked.
"It's made me hungry, ask Mrs. Patmore to create a feast for our family. Oh, and let the servants eat as well. They have been taking care of us so kindly. A raise too?"
"really?" he asked, noting the color had returned to her cheeks and eyes.
She smiled for the first time in a while. "Yes, really. And you and I can go to bed early?"
Robert grinned. He would be eating fast tonight, he thought as he ran down to explain to Carson and have the cook and housekeeper report to the Countess who was right where she belonged!
