A/N: I wrote something for the prompt of Abby and Chester being in a band together! It was supposed to take place in the 70's, but I don't think the story conveys a specific time period. Anyways, this is pretty short but I think it's cute!
It's late at night, but it's never been brighter
The music drifts out of his guitar, simple chords and melodies. Everything comes natural to him. It's effortless, he doesn't deserve the spotlight.
But she's shining up on that stage. Long, red hair flowing behind her, she holds the microphone in her hand. Even without singing she manages to captivate him
He stops playing for a second as she glances towards him and smiles. He loves that, the way her lips turn up when they lock eyes. Brushing his bangs out of his eyes, he smiles back. A beat passes before she turns back to microphone and begins.
"Listen to the wind blow
Watch the sun rise"
The Chain isn't the type of song he's normally into- it's folk, he likes rock. But for some reason it sounds so pretty right now. He's not sure if it's his guitar or her voice. Perhaps it's both.
"Run in the shadows
D*mn your love, d*mn your life"
It's a break-up song. He feels odd playing it with the girl he loves. For some reason, it reminds him of his enemies. The guys at college who cornered him whenever they felt like it. He wonders if she would understand his reasoning.
"And if you don't love me now
You will never love me again
I can still hear you saying
We would never break the chain"
He admits the song is catchy. He's tempted to sing along with her, but he keeps his mouth shut and focuses on the rhythm of the guitar. After all, his voice could never be as good as hers, even though she insisted he could join in during her solos.
It was when they were first discussing their strengths and weaknesses regarding music. They were both incredible at their respective talents of singing and playing, but she had asked if he ever wanted to switch roles before confessing that she wasn't as adept with the guitar as she was with her voice. He laughed and promised he'd teach her everything she wanted to know.
"And if you don't love me now
You will never love me again
I can still hear you saying
You would never break the chain"
He didn't consider what he had with his bandmate a band, it was a friendship. That was what he told his fellow musicians when they asked.
They had finished the song. He lifted his hands from his instrument, listening to the crowd's cheers. She laughed, running a hand through her hair as she waved at the audience. The cheers grow wilder.
He's not a fan of performing on a stage in front of so many people. She's a natural from her years of acting. He'd never seen her in a play though, and he wonders just how different her acting is from her music.
When the audience has finally emptied out from their seats, she sighs and stretches before making her way over to him. She smiles again, but it's clear she's tired from her half-lidded eyes.
"Want to play some boardgames at my place, Ches?" She asks
He smiles at the nickname and grabs his guitar case.
"You bet."
It's late at night, but it's never been brighter
"So how was the concert?"
Ty grabbed his monopoly piece to move it a few spaces. He turned to look at his sister, who was currently leaning on Chester's shoulder while surveying the board to decide her next move.
"Good, but I think Chester would rather sing something more punk rock next time"
"There's a difference between punk rock and rock n roll" Chester piped up and moved his hand out from under Abby's so he could grab the dice.
"I could never tell- take that property I dare you." Abby's tone went serious as soon as Chester's piece hit the board. Jolting up, she stared him down as he struggled to make up his mind.
"Alright, it's yours." Chester passed the dice to Abby as she grinned and accepted it.
"I love you so much!"
Abby's tone was joking, but Chester allowed himself to relish in those words before sarcastically replying.
"Yeah, love you too."
