The next day at Hexside, Luz, Amity, and Hunter were sitting at a table in the cafeteria during lunch talking to Willow and Gus about Hunter's mission.
"So you're going to find out who your long-lost family is", Willow asked.
"That's right", Hunter said, "after all these years of foolishly believing the lies of Alexander Whittebane, I'm finally going to learn the truth about who my family really is."
"Good for you", Willow said, "we hope you find all the answers you're looking for."
"Don't worry", Luz said, "Lilith's got a spell that should help us uncover some of the things we're looking for."
"She says it's one of the oldest spells on the Isles", Amity said, "that's got to mean something, right?"
"It should", Gus said, "a spell that old has to have a good chance of working somewhat effectively."
"In any case, good luck with your search", Willow said.
"Thanks, you two", Hunter said, "I appreciate it."
Later, the trio of Owl House teens made their way towards the Emperor's Castle, and when they got there, a guard saw them and extended the retractable bridge towards them so they could cross it to get inside the castle.
"You ready for this, Hunter", Luz asked.
"I sure am", Hunter said.
The trio went inside and walked down the hallways of the castle, which were now full of tapestries related to the new age of the Boiling Isles in place of the ones from Belos' time as ruler, and entered the throne room, where they found Lilith sitting on the throne and looking through a spell book.
"Hello, children", Lilith said, "I've been expecting you."
"Hello, Lilith", Hunter said, "do you have the spell you were telling us about?"
"Yes I do", Lilith said, "it's right here in this book of spells."
The teens went over next to Lilith, and she flipped through the pages of the book until at last, she found the one they were looking for.
"Here we are", Lilith said, "this spell will lead you to the closest relative you have that is currently alive."
"Okay", Hunter said, "how does it work?"
"Simply read this incantation, and a trail of magic will appear from it", Lilith said, "follow the trail, and it should lead you to the witch you're related to."
"How we know we're getting close", Luz asked.
"The pages of the book will start to glow", Lilith said, "once you've found his relative, they'll be completely lit up."
"Sounds simple enough", Hunter said.
"One more thing", Amity said, "is there going to be a way for us to tell how Hunter and the relative are related?"
"Yes", Lilith said, "once you have reached him, the pages will turn to a page containing a phrase that will reveal the relation between the two."
"Wow", Luz said, "this spell has everything we need to find Hunter's family."
"Glad to hear it", Lilith said, "now let's see if it works."
Lilith handed Hunter the book and he read the spell, which went like this:
Mist in the past,
Clouds in my memories,
The mystery of my family is ever vast.
Lead me in the direction that I must go go,
My living relative, to me you must show.
Then, a trail of magic appeared from the book just as Lilith had said and went out the door of the throne room.
"Look", Luz said, "there it is!"
"That's the trail that will lead us to Hunter's family", Amity said.
"What are we waiting for", Hunter said, "let's follow it and see where it leads!"
"We're right behind you", Luz said.
"Good luck, children", Lilith said, "I'd love to join you on your search, but I have to attend a meeting with the coven heads about the recent attacks by the True Magic Coven."
"Okay", Luz said, "I guess we'll see you later, then."
"Same to you", Lilith said.
Hunter followed the trail of magic out the castle with Luz and Amity following behind, and soon they were out in the streets of Bonesborough searching for Hunter's relative.
"This sure is a long trail", Luz said, "how much farther do you think we need to go?"
"I don't know", Hunter said, "but it looks like the book's starting to glow, so we must be getting close."
They continued to follow the trail, and soon, they found themselves at the door of the public library.
"Looks like whoever your living relative is must be in there", Amity said.
"Then come on", Hunter said, "let's get inside there."
Luz and Amity followed Hunter into the library, and once they were in, they continued following the trail of magic down an aisle of books, and Hunter ended up bumping into a male witch who was looking a book, causing him (Hunter) to drop his book.
"Sorry", Hunter said.
The witch shut his book and turned around, and Hunter noticed that it was the same male witch he had talked to at Grimgrub's Pub the previous day.
"Oh", Hunter said, "it's you."
"Hello", the witch said, "good to see you again."
Luz and Amity noticed the witch's resemblance to Hunter, and they both looked at each other in wonder.
"I'm sorry", Hunter said, "I wasn't looking where I was going."
"Oh no, it's alright", the witch said, "but tell me, what are you doing here?"
"Well", Hunter said, "it's like this..."
Hunter told the witch all about the spell Lilith had showed him and that he, Luz, and Amity were hot on the trail of his living family member.
"So, you've found a way to find out who your family is, have you", the witch asked.
"That's right", Hunter said, "I'm so close to finding the answers to all my questions."
"I'm very happy to hear that", the witch said.
Then, an idea popped into Hunter's head.
"Say", Hunter said, "maybe when we're done here, we can use this spell to try and help you find your son."
"Really", the witch asked, "that would be wonderful."
"What's that about a lost son", Luz asked.
"This witch lost his son when he was a baby, but he recently learned that he may still be alive", Hunter said, "he's been looking everywhere for him, but he hasn't had any luck."
"But now, there is a glimmer of hope that one day, my son and I will be re-united once again", the witch said.
"It sure looks like it", Hunter said.
As Hunter bent down and picked up his spell book, Luz and Amity spoke quietly to one another about the male witch.
"Hey, Amity", Luz whispered, "you don't think he's..."
"Are you kidding", Amity whispered, "it's so obvious."
"Good point", Luz whispered.
"Well, I have to go now", Hunter said, "it was nice seeing you again Mr..."
"Delacroix", the witch said, "Paxton Delacroix."
"Okay", Hunter said, "by the way, my name's Hunter."
"And what a fine name it is", Paxton said, "it was good to see you again too, Hunter."
"Thanks", Hunter said, "well, I'd love to stay and talk, but I have a relative to find."
Hunter opened the spell book back up, and when he turned to the page that had the spell he was using, the pages were glowing as bright as headlights on a car.
"These pages are really bright", Hunter said, "which must mean my relative is really close by."
Hunter walked away with the book, but as he got farther away from Paxton, the pages dimmed some.
"That's strange", Hunter said, "must be in the other direction."
Hunter turned around, and as he walked closer to Paxton, the pages began to get brighter again.
"Now we're cooking", Hunter said.
But when he walked past Paxton, the pages dimmed again.
"What's going on", Hunter said, "why isn't this book showing me..."
It was then that Hunter realized something, and then looked over at Paxton.
"Wait a minute", Hunter said.
Hunter walked over to Paxton and held the book towards him, and when he did, the pages glowed, but when he moved it away, it dimmed some, and he repeated this process several times until he and Paxton both figured it out.
"Mr. Delacroix", Hunter said, "I think we're..."
"Related", Paxton said, "it sure seems that way."
Then, the pages of the book began turning by themselves until they eventually stopped.
"What's this", Hunter asked.
Hunter read out a phrase listed on the page the book had turned to, which said,
At last you have found your family proper,
Look into the eyes of your long-lost father.
"That must be the page with the phrase Lilith was talking about", Luz said.
Hunter and Paxton were looking at each other in the eyes, both of them hardly believing what they were seeing.
"D-Dad", Hunter asked.
"Son", Paxton said, "it really is you."
The two witches hugged each other, and although they both were able to predict their relation, Luz and Amity still thought the scene was touching."
"I don't believe it", Hunter said, "Lilith's spell led me right to my father."
"Indeed", Paxton said, "but I believe it actually was fate that brought us together."
"Maybe", Hunter said, "either way, I'm so happy I found you."
"As am I", Paxton said.
"I have so many questions for you", Hunter said.
"I imagine you do", Paxton said, "but unfortunately, I cannot answer them all right now."
"Why not", Hunter asked.
"I have to go", Paxton said, "there are important matters that I need to attend to right now."
"What kind of matters", Hunter asked.
"I'd rather not say", Paxton said, "it's not something I like to talk about."
"Oh, I see", Hunter said.
"But I would like to see you again", Paxton said, "what do you say we meet up at Grimgrub's Pub tomorrow afternoon?"
"Sounds good to me", Hunter said, "I'll be there."
"Wonderful", Paxton said, "I'm looking forward to spending time with you after all these years."
"I am too, Dad", Hunter said, "I really am."
Paxton walked away from the group, and Hunter left the library with Luz and Amity.
"I can't believe some witch I met in a pub yesterday turned out to be my Dad", Hunter said, "can you?"
Again, Luz and Amity weren't surprised by the revelation at all because of how obvious it was, but for Hunter's sake, they agreed with him.
"I can't wait to tell Eda about this when we get back to the Owl House", Hunter said, "who knows how she'll react to me finding my birth father?"
