Chapter 3: Together
NSFW
Maura and Jane
"Oh," Maura looked up as she felt the first raindrops fall through the trees as they neared the end of their return hike. "Is it supposed to rain?"
"I noticed the clouds, but I thought we had more time," Jane said, but the raindrops were increasing quickly. Luckily, they weren't far from their campsite. "Let's hurry," Jane said, and they started running towards the tent.
They were both laughing hard as they nearly crashed into the tent. Maura stood close to Jane as Jane tried to unzip the opening to the tent, and the second she got it open, they both fell through the door.
"Well, we mostly made it," Jane said, smiling at Maura.
Maura returned the smile as she kicked off her shoes. "'Mostly' being the keyword," she teased as she pulled off her half-wet t-shirt. Even though it was still mid-afternoon, they ended up changing into their pajamas and lying on top of their sleeping bags.
Jane rolled onto her side to look at Maura, propping her head up on her hand, her arm bent at the elbow and resting on her pillow. "You know, over the recent weeks, there's been something I've been talking to Frost about a lot," she said so quietly that Maura barely heard it over the sound of the raindrops on their tent.
Sensing the vulnerability and sincerity in Jane's voice, Maura rolled onto her side, mirroring Jane's position and giving her friend her full attention. The atmosphere created by their physical closeness in the tent and the sound of the rain beating down on their tent made it feel like they were the only two people in the world.
"Maura, I know I've been more distant lately, and I'm really sorry, but I want you to know how much you mean to me," Jane said, and Maura was confused by what seemed to be a change in topic.
"I do," Maura said softly. "You mean everything to me, too." She reached out to gently rub Jane's forearm that was laying between them.
"Everything that has happened over this past year has really opened my eyes," Jane continued. "Maura, you are what I've been talking to Frost about a lot recently. Maura, you're so much more than just my best friend. You're my everything. You're a piece of everything good in my life, which I guess makes sense because you're the best thing in my life."
"Jane…" Maura started.
"Wait, let me finish," Jane said quickly, and Maura nodded.
Maura was sure that Jane could hear her heart beating, even over the noise of the growing rainstorm. It felt like her heart was going to beat out of her chest. She could feel the lump in her throat and the dry roughness of her tongue. And even though Jane barely paused a second, it felt like a lifetime to Maura.
"Maura, you're more than my best friend. I love you," Jane said. When Maura didn't say anything, Jane tried again, "I'm in love with you. Please know that I'm not asking for anything. I'm not expecting you to feel the same. I just…you deserve to know. We'll go home, and everything will go back to normal…"
"No!" Maura choked out, interrupting Jane. Jane's eyes went wide in fear, and Maura could tell that she was about to apologize. However, Jane's words had short-circuited Maura's brain, and she couldn't get the words she wanted to say to come out of her mouth.
So, instead of saying anything, she acted, crossing the small distance between them and kissing Jane hard. Jane responded instantly, pulling Maura half on top of her as she returned the kiss with passion.
Maura's left hand found its way into Jane's hair while she used her other hand to hold herself above Jane.
Maura pulled back slightly, sharing a shy smile with Jane. "I meant, no, I don't want to go back," she whispered breathily.
"Yeah?" Jane asked hopefully, her heart beating rapidly in her chest.
"Yeah," Maura confirmed with a smile before leaning in to kiss Jane again. Kissing Jane was officially Maura's new favorite feeling. Kissing Jane alone in the woods with the rain pounding down on their tent around them was indescribable. They were sweaty and sticky from their hike, and the humidity combined with the heat sparking between them was making Maura's head hazy with arousal. She couldn't get enough.
Jane slipped her hand under Maura's t-shirt, flattening the palm of her hand against the warm, smooth skin as she reveled in the feeling of her best friend surrounding her. She pulled Maura toward her, lying on her back with Maura half on top of her as they continued to make out.
Maura broke the kiss but didn't move away. She rested her forehead against Jane's, her eyes closed as she tried to calm her breathing.
"You okay?" Jane whispered, her breath tickling Maura's cheek.
A small smile tugged at Maura's lips. "I'm…wonderful, but I'm also a bit overwhelmed. Not in a bad way. Just…" she trailed off, "…overwhelmed."
Jane kissed the tip of Maura's nose. "It's okay if you need time," Jane said, and she felt Maura melt further into her in response to her words. "I've had time to think about this. I may not have planned to have this conversation here – or even this weekend – but I've been working up my courage to talk to you for a while."
"Yeah?" Maura asked with a smile, pulling back to meet Jane's eyes, but then her face fell suddenly.
"What's wrong?"
Maura chewed on her bottom lip for a few moments before responding. "I hate that you had to work up the courage to talk to me," she said sadly. "I-I wish you knew that you could talk to me about anything. Even if I didn't feel the same – and I do, by the way, I do feel the same…but even if I didn't, you still could have talked to me about it."
"Oh, Maura," Jane said softly, her heart clenching at the sadness in her friend's voice. She lifted her hand to push Maura's hair behind her ear. "I didn't mean it that way. I know that I can talk to you. I just…" Jane broke eye contact, but her hands continued to rub comforting circles across Maura's back.
Maura could tell that Jane needed time, so she rested her cheek on Jane's chest, listening to the comforting sound of her strong heartbeat.
Jane brought her hand up to run through Maura's hair before continuing. She appreciated that Maura was giving her time. "I shouldn't have said it that way. I just meant that I had time to work through my own feelings over the past few months. After Frost and losing the baby, I was lost, and you were the light in my darkness. I was terrified of losing you too, but I was also scared that I was misreading my feelings about you. I wanted to be sure that my feelings weren't just a reaction to everything that had happened.
"My point is, it's okay if you need some time, too," Jane added.
Maura's fingers fiddled with the hem of Jane's shirt as she considered how to respond. "I don't need time to know how I feel. I think…I think I've been in love with you for years but…" Maura paused and sighed. "That day…when you woke up in the hospital and…and…"
"And you had to tell me I lost the baby," Jane finished for her.
Maura nodded against Jane's chest as tears gathered behind her eyelids. "I don't know how to explain it," she said thickly. "Losing Frost was devastating, but in that moment, when I knew I was breaking your heart, I felt like I had lost a piece of myself. That's when I realized that you are a part of me in a way no other person has ever been. And I could have lost you that day, too."
Maura let go of the hem of Jane's shirt and pressed her fingers against her closed eyes in an attempt to stem the flow of tears.
"Maura," Jane whispered as she kissed the top of Maura's head. She felt guilt flood her system as she realized how much her friend had been hurting too. She knew that what hurt her the most was when Maura was in pain, but she hadn't realized that that went two ways.
Jane hugged Maura tighter against her body. "You know, there's one thing you got wrong," she said softly.
Maura lifted her head in confusion, her eyebrows knitted together as she met Jane's gaze.
Jane gave her a tearful smile. "You weren't breaking my heart," she said. "You were the one holding my heart together. Yes, losing the baby broke my heart. It hurt in a way I never could have anticipated, and on top of losing Frost…it was almost too much. But you were there. You held me together when I felt like nothing else could."
"I wanted to literally hold you together," Maura admitted. "I wanted to crawl into that bed and hold you until all the pain went away. But I knew that was both inappropriate and impractical."
Jane chuckled before lifting her head to kiss Maura's lips, tasting the salt of her tears as she did so. "You were there, Maura. You've always been there," she said in between short, sweet kisses.
"And I always will be," Maura replied, her eyes fluttering closed as she was bombarded once again by feelings of love and arousal. "As long as you'll let me, I'll always be here for you."
Jane deepened the kiss and rolled them so that she was lying on top of Maura. Maura let out a low moan as she buried one hand in Jane's curls and pulled Jane closer by the waist with the other.
"And I'll always be here for you," Jane said as she moved her kisses across Maura's jaw. "Always," she repeated, stopping to tease the sensitive skin behind Maura's ear.
"Oh," Maura let out a breathy whimper, arching her body up against Jane's. She was quickly getting lost in the pleasure coursing through her body. Every cell in her body was tingling in anticipation, and she felt a rush of warmth and wetness between her legs.
Jane continued lavishing Maura's skin with kisses. She nipped lightly at Maura's collarbone, enjoying the way Maura's body jerked in response. She kissed every inch of exposed skin on Maura's neck and shoulders, but she didn't make any move to remove Maura's spaghetti strap camisole top.
Maura slid her foot up the outside of Jane's leg as Jane returned to find Maura's lips in another proper kiss. "I…oh…love…mmm…I love you," she mumbled against Jane's lips. Her fingers gently scraped against the back of Jane's scalp as they kissed, and Jane's hand moved to cup Maura's cheek.
"Mmm," Jane groaned as Maura's tongue swiped across her bottom lip, requesting entry. Her lips parted, accepting Maura's tongue without hesitation. The sensation sent a shiver down her spine, and she tried to get impossibly closer to the woman beneath her.
"Jane," Maura gasped, reluctantly breaking the kiss. "Oh, um, Ja-Jane," she tried again.
Jane kissed Maura one more time before pulling away. "Hmm?" she hummed, kissing Maura's cheek and nose instead.
"We…we need to talk," Maura said distractedly. "Before…I mean…"
This got Jane's attention, and she finally stopped to look at Maura. They were both breathing hard, and Maura's eyes were dark, alight with passion and desire.
"I…" Maura tried again.
"What's wrong?" Jane asked hastily as she rolled off of Maura.
"No…no!" Maura said quickly. "Not like that…shit…I think all the blood has left my brain." Maura shook her head as though to clear it before turning to look at Jane. They were both now lying on their backs, chests rising and falling as they tried to catch their breath. "I just wanted to talk about what you're okay with. I didn't want to stop, but I also didn't want to do anything you weren't ready for. I didn't want to go too far."
Jane smirked. "Are you saying that my kisses are so good they fried your brain?" she teased.
Maura playfully hit Jane with the back of her hand. "Not that you need this knowledge, but sometimes your presence is enough to make my brain go haywire," she admitted with a laugh.
Jane rolled back towards Maura so that she was propped on her elbows, looking at Maura lying on her back. She tried to come up with something teasing to reply with but instead, all she could get out was, "You didn't want to stop?"
Maura met Jane's eyes, instantly seeing the vulnerability mixed with love in her gaze. "No, I didn't want to stop," she confirmed softly, reaching out to run her finger up and down Jane's forearm. "I want you. I've wanted you for a long time, I think. But only if that's what you want too."
Jane leaned forward to kiss Maura lightly. "I want you, too. I want everything with you. Maura, Isles, can I make love to you?"
If Maura had thought she was turned on before, that was nothing compared to how she was feeling now. Heat flooded her body, and all she could do was nod dumbly.
Jane moved so fast that if Maura hadn't been yearning for Jane's skin against hers as much as she was, it would have surprised her. Instead, it just skyrocketed her arousal. Now that she had permission, Maura couldn't hold back. This time, she was the one who rolled them. She moved to straddle Jane, sitting up just long enough to pull of Jane's t-shirt and her own camisole before capturing Jane's lips in another passionate kiss.
"Fuck!" Jane cursed into the kiss as Maura's breasts brushed against hers. She could feel Maura's stiffened nipples tickling her sensitive skin. Her hands instantly found Maura's breasts, cupping and testing the feel of the soft flesh in her hands. She quickly gained confidence as whines and whimpers fell from Maura's lips, mixing with the sound of the rain pounding the tent.
Maura gasped when she felt Jane pinch her nipples. Her hips ground down against Jane's pelvis as she felt herself get impossibly wetter. She was pretty sure that Jane would soon be able to feel it through the flimsy fabric of her panties and summer pajama shorts.
Jane gently pushed up against Maura's shoulders. "I wanna see," she whispered, running her hands down Maura's sides as she did so. Maura shuddered, and she had no idea if it was Jane's words, her touch, or her gaze that felt so good.
"Fuck, you're gorgeous," Jane mumbled. She trailed her fingers across Maura's flat abdomen, watching her muscles twitch in their wake. She softly traced the swell of Maura's breast, loving how Maura's eyes fluttered shut and how she leaned into the touch slightly. Jane let her hands fall back to Maura's hips. "Take them off?" Jane husked out, half as a demand and half as a question, her fingers tugging at the waistband of Maura's shorts.
Maura nodded and moved off of Jane, pulling off her panties and shorts in one movement as Jane did the same. Maura shifted back towards Jane, intending to straddle her again, but the sight of her lover completely nude distracted her. Maura paused, her eyes traveling from Jane's long legs, to the dark patch of hair between her legs, up her toned abdomen, across her pert breasts, and over her shy smile.
Jane tried to be patient as she let Maura look, but she had to admit that she was feeling self-conscious – or at least she was until she saw the look on Maura's face, a look that could only be described as hunger. She reached out, inviting Maura back into her arms. Maura smiled before complying.
Sighs and moans of pleasure filled the tent, and Maura was no longer sure what sounds were coming from her and what sounds were coming from Jane. Their hands roamed shamelessly, seeking to caress all the new skin they had access to.
Maura shifted, pushing her leg between Jane's. Her thigh pressed against Jane's center, and she gasped at the wetness she found there. "Jane," she groaned reverently.
"You do this to me," Jane whispered into Maura's ear as she nipped at her earlobe.
Maura's grip tightened around Jane, and her hips ground down against Jane's thigh.
"You like it when I talk to you, don't you," Jane said, clearly noticing Maura's response.
Maura nodded, dropping her face in the crook of Jane's neck. There was no use denying it. Even if she had wanted to – which she didn't – she couldn't stop the way her body reacted.
"Do you like dirty talk or words of encouragement?" Jane asked as she moved her hips to meet Maura's. They started moving against each other slowly as they tried to find a rhythm.
"I…" Maura's breath hitched when Jane's hands cupped her ass and pulled her down harder, increasing the pressure at her center. "I just like the sound of your voice," she admitted, a hint of embarrassment mixing with the arousal evident in her voice.
Jane smiled to herself even though she knew Maura couldn't see her face from the way she had her own face pressed against Jane's shoulder.
"I like the sound of your voice, too," Jane replied as she slipped one hand between their bodies. "Sometimes, I like to imagine what you sound like in the throes of passion. I close my eyes and imagine that you're there with me."
"Fuck!" Maura cried out when Jane's fingers found her clit.
"But the real thing is so much better than I imagined," Jane continued as her fingers began to circle Maura's clit. "The sound of your moans in my ear, the feeling of your breath tickling my skin, the weight of your body against mine…" Jane accentuated every statement with a particularly hard press of her fingers against Maura's clit.
Jane was driving Maura crazy. She wanted to respond, but she was helpless as Jane's touch turned off her thoughts and heightened every physical sensation bombarding her body. Pleasure coiled in her stomach as Jane continued to whisper things that Maura couldn't comprehend as her hand played between Maura's legs.
The speed of the movement of Maura's hips picked up as she approached her climax. "Jane," she whimpered. "Jane. Oh, fu-yes, Jane." Jane slid her hand back, circling Maura's opening. "Oh," Maura hissed as Jane's fingers found swollen, hot, sensitive skin, but she was disappointed when Jane paused. Her hips chased Jane's fingers, trying to find relief where she needed it most.
"Is this okay?" Jane asked, and Maura's body twitched in pleasure as she realized that Jane was waiting for her consent.
"Yes, please," she moaned uninhibitedly. "Please, Jane."
Maura lost the rhythm of her thrusts as Jane pushed two fingers into her without removing her thumb from Maura's clit. Jane used her thigh to increase the pressure of her thrusts as she moved fast and hard inside Maura.
Jane had never felt anything better than the wet warmth surrounding her fingers, and when she felt Maura's walls twitch around her fingers, she felt a rush of warmth between her own legs.
"Come for me, Maura," Jane groaned as she curled her fingers hard against Maura's front wall, causing Maura's entire body to jerk against her. "Let me hear what you sound like when you come. Let me hear you."
"Jaaannnnneeee!" Maura cried out, her body freezing as she arched into Jane. Every muscle in her body spasmed and pulsed as Jane's fingers continued moving, drawing out every ounce of pleasure from the deepest recesses of Maura's being. The waves lasted longer than she expected…longer than they had in a very long time…until her body finally released the tension it was holding, and she collapsed into Jane's arms. "Oh, god," she groaned as Jane removed her hand, sending an aftershock through Maura.
Jane wrapped both her arms around Maura, kissing the top of Maura's head as she tried to catch her breath. "I love you," Jane's voice broke through Maura's haze.
Maura lifted her head just enough to kiss Jane. The kiss was soft and slow at first, but as Maura regained control of her body, the kisses heated up quickly. She shifted her weight a bit to free up her right hand, trailing it down Jane's body until she could slip between Jane's folds.
Their moans mixed together, filling the tent, as Maura explored Jane's center. Jane was wet and ready for her, so she didn't make Jane wait. They'd have plenty of time to explore each other. Now, Jane needed to get off, and Maura needed to see Jane climax. "Can…" she started.
"Yes!" Jane interrupted impatiently.
Maura chuckled as she thrust two fingers into Jane. Jane was already on edge from making Maura come, so the pleasure started building quickly inside her. Maura's fingers were pure magic and within a few minutes, Jane went flying over the edge.
"Oh, Maur…oh, yes, mmm," Jane moaned as wave after wave of pleasure flowed through every inch of her body. Her toes curled, and her head pressed against the pillow until she had finally reached her limit, reaching down to brush Maura's hand away.
Maura moved up Jane's body, kissing her lightly before settling against her side. "I love you so much, Jane."
"I love you, too," Jane replied, turning her head to kiss Maura's sweaty forehead. They stayed like that, enjoying the afterglow for a while. Jane was the first to break the silence, "If we were in a car, the windows would definitely be fogged up."
Maura laughed lightly. "Are you saying that was hot?" she teased.
"It was," Jane laughed as her hands began drawing patterns on Maura's back. "And there's something about the rain…"
"I love the sound of the rain on the tent," Maura agreed. "But I agree that it adds to the atmosphere. I feel like we're the only two people in the world."
"Well, right now, you're the only person in the world that I want to think about," Jane said. "And we have all afternoon to enjoy the atmosphere," she teased.
"I like that idea," Maura said, lifting herself up to kiss Jane properly, ready for more. "All afternoon."
And they really did spend all afternoon enjoying each other and the feeling of being the only two people in the world.
