This one has nothing to do with the Jamko Baby Fics Series but can see this scenario happening. Enjoy!
"Babe," Eddie whispered as she gently shook her husband. Jamie didn't stir and instead turned onto his side, facing away from her. She sighed and tried again.
"Babe," she said a little more urgently as she shook him again. Finally, the man opened his eyes and turned toward her, more confused than anything as to why she was waking him up at such a late hour.
"What's wrong?" he asked. Then, there was more confusion on his face when he saw that she was dressed. "Where are you going?"
"I'm kind of hungry so I'm going to go out and find something. You want anything?"
"Right now?" he responded.
She gave a smile at the look he was giving her, "Yes, right now.
He looked at the time on his phone, "It's one-thirty, Ed. How about I make you something?"
She shook her head and ran a hand over her belly, "Your child wants Leon's."
He sighed and threw the covers off of him, "Let me get dressed."
Late night snacking was common in their household but ever since Eddie was in the last stages of her pregnancy, it was even more so. Her growing belly made it difficult to lie down comfortably so some nights she would go out to the living room to snack and catch up on her favorite shows or organize the nursery to wear herself out.
He came out a few minutes later in a pair of shorts and a sweatshirt. "Do you want to drive or walk?" he asked, following her out of their apartment and shutting the door behind them.
"Walk," she responded. "It's only around the block."
He nodded and took her hand. Leon's was a small diner that was open during the weekend, mainly for late night party goers and Eddie, who frequented there even before she got pregnant.
"How long had you been up?" Jamie asked as they started off on their trek.
"For awhile," she replied, letting out a small yawn. "I think I only slept for an hour after we went to bed."
Jamie frowned and squeezed her hand, "I'm sorry."
She gently hit his arm, "You have nothing to be sorry about. I'm fine."
"I just hate that you have trouble sleeping. You need your rest more than I do."
"It's not too bad. At least I'm on maternity leave already. I get the whole day to sleep if I want to at least until he…"
"Or she," Jamie interjected.
Eddie smiled, "Or she gets here."
They had decided to hold off on finding out the gender of the baby, wanting it to be a surprise on the day. Eddie had a feeling that they were having a boy, while Jamie was sure that they were having a girl.
"I can't believe that we've held off this long," Eddie said.
"Held off on what?" he asked curiously.
"Finding out what the baby is," she replied.
"I'm truly surprised that you've held off this long. I thought you would've given up and wanted to find out a long time ago."
"I surprised myself too. But I will admit that I was very close to calling the doctor one day because the suspense was killing me. As I was about to, you ended up calling me so I took it as a sign that I shouldn't do it."
"Well I'm glad I called you that day. Would've you told me that you found out?"
"Of course," she responded. "I wouldn't have been able to keep something like that in."
They made it to Leon's a few minutes later and placed their orders at the register. As they sat down at the table, Jamie could tell that his wife was pensive.
"Hey," he said gently. She looked up at him. "What's on your mind?"
She gave him a small smile then shook her head, "Nothing."
He gave her a look, "Eddie."
She sighed, "Fine. I was just thinking about the baby… and the promotion. It's just a lot of things happening at once."
"It is," he responded.
"I'm grateful that I got the promotion to detective… and I'm so happy about our baby. But what if I can't handle both?"
"You will," he said with confidence.
"But what if I can't?" she replied, her face etched with worry. "I love my career but I love our baby even more. I don't want our baby to grow up and resent me because I'm away all the time. My dad was great but he was away a lot. I'm scared, Jamie… I don't want to be him. He would rarely make it to any of my school functions. At first, I would be sad but eventually, I'd barely notice that he wasn't there. I don't want it to be that way with our baby."
"It won't," he reassured. He stood up then went and sat next to her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "I know it won't. You won't be your dad, Eddie. Our baby will always know how much they're loved by you. Yeah, being a detective is going to be hard because it's a very rigorous job and you're on call all the time. It's hard not to take the work home with you. But we'll make it work in whatever way we can."
"I know," she nodded, letting out a sniffle.
"And I'll just tell you now, if one day, it all becomes too much, I'll be perfectly okay if you want to stop working and stay home. I'm not saying that you have to or I want you to but I'm just putting it out there so you know."
Eddie gave a small smile, "I appreciate that. But I don't think I would."
"I know… but if you ever got that point to thinking about it, I would be okay with you doing that."
She wrapped her arms around him and sighed, "Thank you."
Jamie pressed a kiss to her head, "Everything will be okay, Ed. I promise.
