Chapter One
Lucy Rizzoli was an extremely bright girl. She was talented in many things, but loved science most of all, especially medical science. She got along great with her Aunt Maura who sometimes would let her hand tools and observe autopsies, despite her mother's objections, but Lucy also enjoyed spending time with her mother most of all. Her mother was her favorite person in the entire world and she would often notice something her mother had missed. However lately Lucy had been having strange dreams, dreams of a woman with red hair smiling down at her and a man doing the same moments later with dark hair. Lucy drew these people often on her iPad that Maura gave her. Lucy had an eidetic memory, which meant she could remember what she had seen and heard in perfect detail, she knew that this woman had to be in her memories, but she never told her mother.
She had her mother's dark hair, but she also had blue eyes. Lucy often asked her mother who her father was, but she never gave her a straight answer, so Lucy eventually stopped asking. "Lucy! Are you up yet!" Jane called out as Lucy was sleeping in her bed. She was having that dream again, of that red headed woman smiling at her, but this time the dream had taken a turn for the worse, she also saw a dark haired woman standing in front of her, trying to pick her up. Lucy woke up with a start and saw her mother standing over her. She jumped and panted, sweating to death. "Lucy, are you alright?" Jane asked her. "Y-Yeah...I'm fine mom..." Lucy replied, her whole body was shaking. "You're not fine, you're sweating to death and shaking. Tell me what's wrong?" Jane asked as she brushed a piece of hair out of her daughter's face.
"Mom...I can't..." Lucy said before she begun to sob. "Hey, hey, hey...it's alright...everything is going to be alright okay? Come here." Jane replied as she hugged her daughter tightly. Once Lucy had calmed down Jane let go. "Come on, you are going to spend the day with me...and later you have field hockey practice, go get dressed and get your things for me okay?" Jane told her. Lucy nodded and got up, got ready and grabbed her things, which included her nebulizer, hockey gear, and iPad and followed her mother out the door. They got in her mother's car and Jane drove them to her work. She followed her mother to her desk and set her things down while her mother set up her nebulizer. "Alright Lulu, put your face in the mask." Jane said to her once it was set up.
Lucy did as she was told while Jane went downstairs to get them some breakfast. A woman came into the room with red hair and a red dress with a pair of leopard print heels. She took off her sunglasses. "Can I speak to a Detective Jane Rizzoli?" she asked. "Yeah, see that girl over there, her desk is right over where she's sitting, she'll be back in a minute." Frankie said to her. The woman walked over to Jane's desk and saw the girl using a nebulizer. Once it had finished Lucy looked up and noticed the woman. "Lacey? What are you doing here?" the woman asked her. "Lacey? I think you have the wrong person...my name is Luc...y..." Lucy said as she looked up at the woman. It was the same woman from her dreams.
"Lucy?" the woman asked her. Lucy nodded, her face turned pale, she tried to look back at something else. Who was she? Why was she dreaming about her? Jane came back into the room and set down their breakfast. "Bacon and eggs for you with hot chocolate, and bagel and coffee for me." Jane said to her. "Thanks mom." Lucy replied as she smiled at her mom. "You're welcome Lulu." she said as she kissed her forehead. "Are you Detective Jane Rizzoli?" the red head asked her. "Yes, is there something I can do for you Mrs..." Jane started to ask. "Dr., Dr. Megan Hunt, I'm a medical examiner from the Philadelphia Police Department. I'm here about evidence that we received regarding an apprentice to a Charles Hoyt." Megan told her. "Oh yeah, we spoke on the phone, please sit." Jane told her as Lucy scooted over in her chair.
Lucy started to eat her breakfast and tried to ignore the doctor, which Jane noticed, she also noticed that Lucy was very uncomfortable with her. Lucy was looking through the pictures she had drawn in her iPad. She finally found the picture of the woman smiling at her and looked up at the woman and then back at her drawing, hopefully it wouldn't draw attention. It was the same woman alright, but why? Now that she had a name Lucy typed up her name in Google on her iPad. She was a former neurosurgeon, but lost a patient and retired, thus becoming a medical examiner. Lucy noticed her drop her sunglasses and hold her hand. "Paresthesia right?" Lucy interrupted. "Yes, how did you know?" Megan asked her.
"You dropped your sunglasses and it looked like it hurt, like your hands went numb...also I read a lot of medical books in my spare time." Lucy told her. "Lucy, you've been reading waaaaay too many of your Aunt Maura's medical books. Please excuse her, she thinks she's always right." Jane said as she shot Lucy a look. "I always am." Lucy replied. Lucy bent over and picked up her sunglasses and handed them to her, slipping a note into her hand with the sunglasses."Here." Lucy said as she smiled at her. "Mom I'll be back, I need to use the restroom." Lucy said as she closed her iPad's cover and left. They talked for a few more minutes before Megan started to walk away. She read the note that Lucy had passed her. "Meet me in the women's room. We need to talk. -Lucy" the note read.
Megan found her way to the women's room and walked in. Lucy looked at her. "Good, you're here." Lucy said to her. "Why did you call me Lacey? Why are you showing up in my dreams? Who are you?" Lucy asked Megan as she looked up at her. Megan took out a photo of her daughter Lacey. "This is my daughter." Megan told her. "She looks just like me...exactly like me..." Lucy said to her as she examined the photo. "That's because she's your identical twin. You're my daughter." Megan told her. "But...that's not possible...I'm not adopted..." Lucy told her. "Maybe she just didn't tell you, but you are definitely my daughter. I'm the one who named you." she told Lucy.
"Why did you get rid of me?" Lucy asked her. "I didn't get rid of you, you were taken out of the hospital a few hours after I gave birth to you." Megan explained. "You're lying...just stay away from me." Lucy said before she took off. "Lucy wait!" Megan called out as she went after Lucy. Lucy ran out of the police station crying. Megan went after her as quickly as she could to try to stop her. Megan finally caught up to Lucy and grabbed her wrist. "Lucy stop!" Megan said to her as Lucy tried to get away. "Lucy, listen to me. I did not abandon you..." Megan told her.
Jane noticed that Lucy had kept staring at the doctor like she recognized her from somewhere and kept looking back at her iPad. She opened the cover to her iPad and put in Lucy's pin number. She looked at the screen that opened up was a picture of the doctor. There was no way that Lucy had drawn this just then, her art took time. Jane looked at the date of the picture. It was dated three months ago. She then realized that Lucy recognized her with her eidetic memory. Jane went to the bathroom to check on her, but she wasn't there. "Hey have you seen Lulu?" Jane asked Nina. "Yeah, she took off, and that woman you were speaking to chased after her." Nina replied as she pointed out the door. "Thanks." Jane said as she took off to go find her daughter.
She didn't have to look very far, she saw the doctor holding Lucy's wrist as she tried to break free. Jane pulled out her gun and pointed it at the doctor. "Let go of my daughter! Get down on the ground! Hands behind your head! NOW!" Jane ordered. Megan let go of Lucy's wrist and she ran back to her mother. "Get behind me Lulu." Jane said to her. Lucy nodded and did what she was told. "You don't understand Detective Rizzoli." Megan told her as she did what she was told. Jane approached her, put away her gun and took out her handcuffs, placing them on Megan's wrists. She led her inside and into an interrogation room, telling Lucy to wait outside.
"What were you doing to my daughter?!" Jane asked her as she stood there with her arms crossed. "That girl is my missing daughter." Megan said to her. "What are you talking about?" Jane asked her. "Fourteen years ago I gave birth to identical twins...Lucy was the one who was taken. I can prove it." Megan told her as she took out a photo of her other daughter Lacey. "This is her sister Lacey." Megan added as she handed Jane Lacey's photo. "She looks exactly like Lucy..." Jane said as she brushed her hair out of her face with her hand. "So you told my daughter that she was obviously adopted...and she's recognized you...Lucy has an eidetic memory...she has a drawing in her iPad from three months ago of you...that must be what she's been dreaming about, but was too afraid to say anything...because she thought that it might upset me." Jane added.
"You never told her that she was adopted?" Megan asked her. "No...I wanted to tell her when she was older." Jane replied. "She handed me a note saying to meet her in the bathroom. She asked me why I called her Lacey and why I kept showing up in her dreams. So I told her the truth." Megan told her. Jane unhooked the cuffs for Megan and led her out. Lucy stepped away from the doctor and hid behind her mother. "Lulu it's okay...she's not going to hurt you." Jane told her as she hugged her daughter. Lucy hugged her back tightly. "Lulu...I'm sorry I didn't tell you that you were adopted...I wanted to wait until you were older...until I found some more answers for you." Jane started.
"W-What do you mean?" Lucy asked her. "Sit down Lulu." Jane told her. Lucy sat down with her mother and Megan sat in a chair next to them. "Fourteen years ago I was working a case with a woman named Marina Foster. This woman had killed a woman, a surgeon. We came to arrest her and busted down the door, and she was standing over you and attempting to kill you as well. We arrested her, and I picked you up. We tried to find your parents, but we never found anything, and rather than put you into the foster system, I decided to adopt you. Just know Lulu that I love you very much and nothing will ever change that." Jane explained to her.
"Marina Foster is the one who kidnapped you. Here I have a photo of what she looked like, carrying you out of the hospital." Megan said as she took out a photo of the woman carrying her. "You weren't lying...I...I'm sorry..." Lucy told her as she examined the photo. "It's alright...I mean that would be my first reaction too if I were in your shoes. I never gave up hope of seeing you again." Megan said as she placed her hands on Lucy's cheeks. She pulled Lucy in for a hug as Lucy started to cry. The hug felt just as nice as her mother's. While Megan may have been her biological mother, to her, Jane would always be her mother.
They let go and Lucy dried her eyes. "Ma? What are you doing here?" Jane asked as she looked up at her mother Angela Rizzoli. "I came in to check on my favorite granddaughter and take her to lunch." Angela told her. "Hi grandma." Lucy said to her. "Lulu? Have you been crying? What's wrong sweetie?" Angela asked as she helped dry her tears. "And who is this?" Angela continued. "Ma, I'd like you to meet Dr. Megan Hunt...she's Lucy's biological mother." Jane said to her. "Her biological mother? " Angela asked. Jane nodded and started to explain what she had learned. "Would you mind if I see a picture of her twin sister?" Angela asked her. Megan took out the photo of Lacey and handed it to Angela. "She looks exactly like our Lulu." Angela said as she looked at the girl before handing her back the photo. "Her name is Lacey. I named them both." Megan replied.
"What a beautiful name." Angela told her. "So you're a doctor, Lucy wants to be one too, don't you Lulu?" Angela said as she looked at her adoptive granddaughter. Lucy nodded "Well I want to be a medical examiner...like Aunt Maura." Lucy told her. "Dr. Hunt, why don't you join us for dinner. I'm making gnocchi and we would be happy to have you." Angela offered. "Thank you. That would be lovely." Megan told her. Pretty soon it was time for field hockey practice and Lucy hadn't eaten anything since breakfast because they talked through lunch.
"Mom, I'm going to go get ready for practice okay?" Lucy said to her. "Oh yeah, go change and meet me downstairs." Jane told her. "Practice?" Megan asked. "Lulu plays field hockey, she's an attacker like I was." Jane informed her. "I still say that's far too dangerous Jane." Angela told her. "Ma, Lulu will be fine okay?" Jane reassured her before she went downstairs. "Would you mind if I go with you? I'd like to see her practice." Megan asked her. "Sure, she's waiting for me downstairs, let's go." Jane replied. Angela followed them as well as she promised Lucy she'd see her play. Megan followed Jane's car to the field for her practice and they got out. "Okay Lulu, have a good practice okay?" Jane said as she kissed her forehead. "Thanks mom." Lucy smiled before walking onto the field with her hockey stick.
As practice went on Jane cheered her on, Megan noticed that Lucy was rather good at it and was more of a sporty girl like Jane was, while Lacey was more girly. She wondered if the reason Lucy dressed like she did though was because Jane couldn't afford to get her anything nicer. As she watched Lucy play she remembered what happened that day at the hospital. She remembered breaking down when Lucy was taken, one of the few times she showed any weakness. Megan, her mother, and her ex-husband were the only ones that knew about Lucy's existence, she never told Lacey, she didn't want Lacey to feel guilty for being the one who stayed. Megan thought she would tell her if she had ever found Lucy, and she finally had.
Once hockey practice was over Lucy met her mother. "Hey I'm going to use the restroom, I'll be right back okay?" Lucy said before setting her things down and running to the outdoor restrooms. She had done her business and was washing her hands when someone approached her from behind, placing a chloroform filled cloth over her face. They then left a message for Jane. A photo of her holding Lucy as a baby pinned with a scalpel. They loaded Lucy into a van and took her away.
