Chapter Two
"What's taking Lucy so long?" Angela asked her. "I don't know, but I'm going to check on her." Jane said as she stood up. She hustled over to the bathrooms and looked around for Lucy. "Lucy! Are you ready to go?" Jane called out. She opened the stall doors and saw that Lucy wasn't in any of them. She then walked past a wooden pole and saw something out of the corner of her eye. Jane turned around and looked at the photo. It was of her, holding Lucy. She then noticed a scalpel holding the photo. She could think of only one person who could have done this, but that couldn't be possible, Charles Hoyt was dead...could it have been an accomplice of his?
Jane ran out of the bathroom and called Frankie and Nina to the scene to examine the crime scene while Jane ran to her mother. "Someone's taken Lucy." Jane told her. "What do you mean someone's taken Lucy?" Megan asked her. "The bathroom is empty, but I found a photo attached to a pole with a scalpel." Jane said. A few minutes passed and there were cops on the scene. They took statements from everyone while Jane and Maura examined the crime scene with the help of Frankie and Nina. Megan walked towards the crime scene. "You can't be here Dr. Hunt." Jane said to her. "I want to help." Megan told her. "We don't need the help thanks." Jane said to her. "Actually Jane, I could always use some help." Maura told her. "Alright...fine." Jane told her as she lifted up the crime scene tape. Megan joined Maura as Maura handed her a pair of gloves.
"So you're Lucy's biological mother...I can see the resemblance." Maura told her. Megan looked at her for a few moments, confused on how she knew this. "I'm Dr. Maura Isles, the chief medical examiner. Jane told me about you." Maura added as she looked at Megan. "You are Dr. Megan Hunt, a former neurosurgeon, but currently a medical examiner for the Philadelphia PD." Maura surmised. "I checked your credentials." Maura added. "Yes, that is correct." Megan told her. "Jane, we found fingerprints on the photo and the scalpel, we'll run these to the lab." Frankie said to her. "Thanks Frankie." Jane sighed. "Jane, it's going to be alright, we'll find her okay?" Frankie reassured her. "Thanks Frankie..." Jane told him before he left.
"Jane, what's wrong?" Maura asked her. "This has Hoyt written all over it, but that can't be possible...he's dead...I stabbed him to death..." Jane told Maura as she started to panic. "Jane..." Maura said as she took off her gloves and hugged Jane. "What if we don't find her...what if they kill her?" Jane said as she started to cry. Megan stood up and looked at Jane. "We are going to find her...they will not get away with this." she told her. "Thank you..." Jane told them.
They got back to the precinct and ran the prints on the photo and the scalpel. Once they came back Maura went upstairs to Jane's desk who was looking at pictures of her and Lucy together. "Jane...the prints came back, they belong to Hoyt and Marina Foster." Maura told her. "That's not possible...Hoyt is dead...and and and Marina is in prison..." Jane said as she buried her face in her hands. "Marina was broken out of prison a few hours ago, by a man matching Hoyt's description." Frankie told her. "So, we've got Foster working with a man that faked his own death?!" Jane said angrily. "Damn it!"she said as she slammed her fists on her desk.
"Hoyt went after you Detective Rizzoli correct?" Megan asked her. "Yeah." Jane said as she showed Megan her hands. "And Marina is the one who took Lucy...why though?" Jane asked her. "Because...she had a daughter...she was too far gone, and I refused to operate on her when I was a neurosurgeon." Megan informed her. "So Hoyt faked his own death, somehow survived cancer, and teams up with Marina to kill two birds with one stone?" Jane asked. "Jane, we're going to find her alright?" Frankie told her. Jane nodded and sat back down, looking at pictures of her and Lucy together, one of them was at a Red Sox game, Lucy was as big of a fan as she was. She would often play basketball with her daughter as well, despite her severe asthma she was quite good at sports.
Jane suddenly remembered that Lucy needed another dose of her nebulizer. She picked it up and looked at Frankie. "Lucy's nebulizer..." Frankie said. "How bad is Lucy's asthma?" Megan asked her. "It's pretty severe...she has to use this four times a day. She's only used it once today...at about nine in the morning, she needed her second dose an hour ago." Jane said as she set it down. "Does she have any other medical conditions?" Megan asked her. "She has some severe food allergies to seafood, peanuts, and tree nuts." Jane replied as she sighed.
"Jane, there's a delivery for you." Frankie said. Jane stood up and walked over to a man who handed her an envelope before leaving. Jane opened the envelope and inside there was a picture. Lucy had scalpels in the palms of her hands, pinning her to the ground. She had cuts on her throat, but not deep enough to kill her. Jane dropped the photo on the ground and covered her mouth with her left hand. "Janie...what is it?" Frankie asked her. Jane pointed at the photo. Frankie picked it up and looked at it. "It's a message for me..." Jane said to them. "Someone go track down that delivery guy." Jane told them and Frankie took off to go track him down. Jane took the photo and sat back down at her desk, examining the photo more carefully for anything that could stand out to where she was.
Suddenly Jane realized where this was. It was where she was first taken captive. Hoyt must be doing it there for some sick and twisted reason. "Janie, I put him in interrogation." Frankie said. "Interview him, but I think I know were Lucy is." Jane said as she grabbed her gun and took off. Megan noticed the photo as well and took off after Jane. "I'm going with you, I can help with her injuries." Megan said. "Alright, but stay back until I tell you to." Jane told her as they got in the car and left, with other officers following them.
Lucy laid in down on a slab, her hands pinned with scalpels to the ground. She already was having an asthma attack, her body shaking with fear and crying. "Now you and your mother can match..." Hoyt told her as he took a scalpel and ran it down her skin. He placed it to her neck and started to cut her as Lucy cried with tape on her mouth, it was getting even harder to breathe. Even with the tape over her mouth a wheezing sound could be heard in between sobs of fear.
Jane stopped the car and got out of it while Megan followed behind her. "No, stay in the car until I say so." Jane told her as she ran towards the building with backup. However Megan didn't take orders from anyone. She got out of the car anyway and followed closely behind. The backup busted down the door and Jane followed down the steps. "Freeze Hoyt. Step away from Lucy." Jane ordered. Marina ran at them with a gun and started shooting at them, trying to aim for Megan. Jane opened fire at Marina and shot her and then shot Hoyt. The backup officers arrested Hoyt and Marina, who were still very much alive as Jane and Megan ran towards Lucy. Jane took the tape off of her mouth while Megan removed the scalpels. Megan could hear Lucy wheezing in between sobs. "We need help down here!" Megan called out.
"Hang on Lulu, help is on the way okay?" Jane said as she teared up and brushed the hair out of Lucy's face. Jane kissed her daughter's forehead while Lucy wheezed and sobbed at the same time. "You, get me some oxygen, she's having a severe asthma attack." Megan told one of the EMT's. They handed her some oxygen and Megan placed the mask over Lucy's mouth and nose. "Dr. Hunt, you ride with her okay, I'll follow in my car." Jane told her. Megan nodded and got in the ambulance with the EMT's and Lucy. Once they arrived they took Lucy in to treat her asthma and her wounds, realizing they needed to perform surgery on both of her hands to fix them up so they would still work. Megan sat down while Jane paced around like an expecting father. Megan soon received a phone call from Lacey. "Hey Lace..." Megan answered as she waited for news on Lucy.
"Hey mom, you didn't tell us when you landed like you were supposed to." Lacey told her. "I know...something came up, I'm going to be another few days." Megan told her. "Why? What happened?" Lacey asked her. "It's nothing you need to be worried about Lace, just let your grandmother know alright?" Megan told her. "Grandma says she wants to speak with you mom." Lacey told her as she handed the phone to her grandmother. "Hey mom." Megan said reluctantly. "Why are you going to be longer? Did something happen?" Joan asked her. "Is Lacey listening in?" Megan asked her. "Of course she is." Joan said. "Lace, can you go to your room, I need to speak to grandma privately." Megan told her. "Sure mom." Lacey said as she left.
"Megan what is it?" Joan asked with a hint of worry in her voice. "I found Lucy." Megan replied as she continued to wait for someone to talk to them. "Are you sure?" Joan asked her. "Mom, she's identical to Lacey, of course I'm sure. She's in the hospital, someone attacked her, so I need you to stay with Lacey a bit longer." Megan replied "Are you going to bring her home?" Joan asked her. "Yes." Megan replied as she looked at Jane continuing to pace. "Okay, I'll see you two when you get back." Joan said before they said their goodbyes and hung up.
"Detective Rizzoli?" a doctor called out as Jane walked over to him. Megan put her phone back in her purse and followed Jane. "How is she?" Jane asked him. "She's out of her asthma attack, but we had to put her into surgery to repair her hands, she's out of surgery now and calling for you." the doctor said to her. "I'll take you back now." he added as they both followed him to Lucy's room. "Lucy..." Jane said as she hurried over to Lucy. "Mom!" Lucy cried out as she hugged Jane tightly and started to cry. "It's alright baby girl...shhhhhhhh..." Jane told her as she rubbed Lucy's back. Megan walked into the room and saw Lucy hugging her, feeling rather jealous. She wanted a bond like that with Lucy, but knew it was going to take time.
Once Lucy had calmed down Lucy looked at Dr. Hunt and smiled at her. "T-Thank you, for helping to save me..." Lucy told her. "Lucy, I'm your mother...I would do anything for you." she told Lucy as she gave her a hug. Lucy wasn't expecting this, but the hug felt nice, she hugged her back and smiled. She could feel the same amount of love in her hug as she did her mother's. Lucy knew that this woman cared for her a lot. Angela knocked on the door and saw Lucy hugging the other woman. "Lulu, thank god you're alright." Angela told her as she ran over to her. "Hi grandma." Lucy said to her as Megan let go and Lucy hugged her grandmother. Jane stood up "Dr. Hunt, can I speak with you outside?" Jane asked her.
"You can call me Megan." Megan told her. "And you can call me Jane." Jane said as they stepped outside of the room. "You're going to take Lucy away from me...aren't you?" Jane asked her. "She's my daughter...and I've missed her a lot..." Megan replied. "I know the adoption isn't legal because she wasn't put up for adoption, but I would still like to be in her life." Jane said to her. "She'd like that." Megan teared up and smiled. They talked for several minutes about Lucy before they came inside. That was when Jane knew that if she waned to stay close to Lucy and still be in her life then she was going to have to move to Philadelphia to be with Lucy. Megan went back inside the room to stay with Lucy as Maura and Frankie showed up. Jane told him to go inside and Maura sat next to Jane.
"Megan is taking Lucy back to Philadelphia once she's released from the hospital." Jane told Maura. "Oh Jane..." Maura said as she hugged her tightly. "I want to stay with her, but my home is here, my job is here...I don't know what to do." Jane said as she hugged Maura back. Once Maura had comforted Jane, Jane went back into Lucy's room before the inevitable happened. Maura visited Lucy for a while until visiting hours were over and Jane was the only one left. Maura had to do something for Jane. She knew Jane desperately wanted to stay close to Lucy so she was going to do something for her.
Maura came back the next day after Megan left to get something to eat. She saw Jane sitting in the bed with Lucy while Lucy laid her head on her mothers shoulder. Maura smiled and came in, sitting down in Jane's chair. She handed Jane an envelope with something inside. "What is it Maura?" Jane asked her. "Open it." Maura told Jane. Jane opened the envelope and inside was a picture as well as a deed for a condo in Philadelphia. "I don't understand." Jane said to Maura. "This is the condo directly next door to Megan Hunt's, I purchased it for you, you should be close to Lucy. Lieutenant Cavanaugh said he would approve the transfer to the Philadelphia Police Department." Maura told her. "I can't accept this." Jane said as she handed her back the envelope. "Jane, you are Lucy's mother too, you should get to be with her." Maura said as she handed her back the envelope. "I...I don't know what to say..." Jane said to her.
"I've spoken with Dr. Hunt, she's agreed to let Lucy live with you, she doesn't exactly have another spare room and you'd be right next door. "Thank you Auntie Maura..." Lucy said as she hugged Maura."You are welcome Lulu." Maura told her. "I'm going to miss you Maura..." Jane said to her. "Well you don't have to miss me for long, I've already found a house there with a guest house for your mother." Maura said. "You mean you guys are coming too?" Jane asked her. "Yes of course, the chief medical examiner has actually gone into congress and her position is open, I've taken the position there." Maura told her. "So this is really happening huh?" Jane said to her. "Thank you Maura." Jane added.
Megan walked in a few moments later. "I see you've told Jane the good news." Megan said as she sat down next to Lucy. "I have." Maura said to her. "I'm really glad that she'll be able to be close to both of us." Megan told her as she looked at Lucy. Lucy thought to herself, this would make everything way less awkward, she would get to stay with her mother, but still be able to get to know her biological mother and her twin sister. She didn't know about her biological father at all, but I'm sure they would meet at some point. Jane kissed Lucy's head and Lucy laid her head back on her mother's shoulder. Jane wrapped her arms around Lucy and rubbed her arms with her hand.
A few moments later Angela walked into the room. "Lulu, I've got a present for you." Angela said as she placed down a container of her chocolate chip cookies. "Alright! My favorite! You're cookies are the best grandma!" Lucy smiled as she tried to grab a cookie. "Let me do it Lulu." Jane said as she took a cookie and held it so Lucy could eat it. She still couldn't use her hands because they were wrapped up in bandages and they caused her a lot of pain. "Sooo good." Lucy said with her mouth full. "Lucy, chew with your mouth closed." Angela told her. Lucy felt the cookie crunch a bit in the next bite and became worried. Jane took a bite of the cookie and noticed there were nuts in them. "Lucy spit that out!" Jane said as she grabbed the trashcan for Lucy. Lucy spit out the bite into the trashcan. "Maura, go get the doctor." Jane told her.
"Why? What's wrong?" Angela asked. "Ma! What did you put in these?" Jane asked her mother in a loud tone. "They're just my regular chocolate chip cookies why?" Angela asked her. "Take a bite Ma." Jane said to her as Lucy started to choke. Angela took a bite of the cookie. "Oh no. I must have mixed the cookies up for TJ. He wanted walnuts in his!" Angela said loudly, panicking a bit. "Lucy's deathly allergic to nuts Ma!" Jane yelled at her. A doctor rushed in and saw Lucy gasping for air, her lips turning blue. "She's consumed nuts! Lucy's deathly allergic to tree nuts, peanuts, and seafood." Jane told him as she got up. The doctor gave her a dose of epinephrine as he cleared everyone out of the room. Jane continued to argue with Angela while Megan watched the doctors and nurses try to help Lucy through the window. Megan wondered how things were going to play out when Lucy moved in next door. How would she and Lacey get along? Lucy would be released from the hospital in a few days and Megan would come back without her as Lucy would be coming the following week with Jane. She couldn't wait to spend time with Lucy.
