Chapter Three
Several days later Lucy was finally able to return home. Her mother helped her pack her things because Lucy wasn't able to do it herself. They were ready to go, Jane's transfer went in, and their flight left in a few hours, the movers had already taken their things. "You ready to go Lulu? We need to get to the airport." Jane said to her. "Yeah, I'm ready mom." Lucy said to her. Maura and Angela had already moved to Philadelphia, and they were going to help let the movers in to their condo while they were on a plane. Jane grabbed both of their suitcases and left, getting into the cab. Angela had driven Jane's car already to Philadelphia. Lucy buckled her seat belt and sat in the cab next to her mother. Once they boarded the plane they only had to wait an hour and twenty minutes for them to land. Lucy decided to play some Go on her phone, which was a bit harder all things considering.
Once they landed Lucy put her phone away and her mother helped her with her things. Maura and Angela met them at the airport and took them to their new condo. Jane opened the door while Lucy slowly walked behind her. She went inside and saw that all of her things in her room were unpacked and put away with the bed made. "Thanks for unpacking and putting away my stuff for me." Lucy said to them. "You are so welcome sweetheart." Angela said as she hugged her. "We still owe Megan that dinner, we'll invite your sister and I'll make gnocchi." Angela told her, "Okay, thanks grandma." she smiled.
"Hey mom?" Lacey asked Megan as she came in. "Yeah Lace?" Megan asked her. "I think our new neighbors are here. They have a girl that looks like she's my age. Can I go say hi?" Lacey asked. Megan put down her magazine. "Why don't we go over there together?" Megan suggested. "Alright." Lacey said. Megan stood up and followed her daughter over to the door. "Now Lace, before we go over there I need to tell you something. I don't want you to freak out when you see her. Let me explain everything when you meet her alright?" Megan asked her. "Mom...what are you talking about?" Lacey asked. "You'll see." Megan said as she opened the door. They went next door and knocked. "Hello Megan, and this must be Lacey." Jane said as she smiled at them both. "Come in, please. I'll get Lucy." Jane said as she let them in.
They came in and Jane shut the door behind them before going to get Lucy. "Hey Lucy, they're here." Jane said to her. Lucy got up from her desk and followed her mother out the front door. "Lacey, this is Jane Rizzoli and her adoptive daughter Lucy." Megan told her. Lacey looked at the girl and gasped. "Mom...why does she look just like me?" Lacey turned to ask her mother. "Lacey, Lucy is your identical twin sister." Megan explained. "I don't have a sister..." Lacey started to say. "Yes, you do...when you two were born a woman took off with Lucy...rather than let you have survivors guilt, we decided to hide everything about her from you until we found her. Jane here adopted Lucy." Megan explained. "You lied to me? Is she why you were always working?" Lacey asked her. "Yes...the guilt was eating me alive...so I buried myself in my work...and I put our relationship at risk..." Megan said with a hint of guilt in her voice.
"I can't believe this." Lacey said as she took off back to their condo and went to her room. "Lacey wait!" Megan called out. "She hates me..." Lucy said quietly before running off to her room. "Lulu..." Jane said as she heard the door shut. "Well this was a disaster." Megan said to them. "Would you mind if I speak to Lucy?" Megan asked Jane. "Go right ahead." Jane told her as she went back to unpacking. Megan walked over to Lucy's door and knocked. "Lucy, can I come in?" Megan asked her. "Sure..." Lucy said quietly as she sniffled and tried to wipe her tears away. Megan walked in and sat beside Lucy on her bed. "It's not your fault you know. I neglected to tell Lacey about you because I...I felt guilty...I didn't want her blaming me for something else...and I didn't want her to feel guilty for being here. Just give her time...I'm sure she doesn't hate you. It's me she's mad at." Megan explained to her.
Lucy nodded and wiped her tears once more. Megan noticed her hands were bleeding through the bandages. "Lucy, can I see your hands?" Megan asked her. Lucy nodded once more and showed Megan her hands. "I'm going to get some more gauze so I can change these, I want to check your stitches too." Megan told her as she stood up and left. A few minutes later she came back with some gauze and bandages for her wounds. She sat back down next to Lucy and began to unroll her bandages and take off the gauze. She examined Lucy's hand and noticed that the stitches weren't quite covering the wound so there was still some blood, but it wasn't enough to take her to the hospital. Megan then placed the gauze on both sides before starting to bandage her right hand.
Once she was finished she worked on her left hand before finishing it up as well. "Thank you...you do a much better job than mom does." she smiled. "You know...you can always call me mom too...if you want..." Megan told her. "Thanks, but I think that would just complicate things right now..." Lucy told her. "Okay, I understand, but the offer stands at any time." Megan said as she pat Lucy's leg with her hand. Megan stood up and looked around Lucy's room. "Wow, look at all of these trophies...basketball, softball, hockey, lacrosse, you play a lot of sports..." Megan told her. "Yeah, my mom got me into sports...we like to watch Red Sox games together too." Lucy told her. Megan then turned her head to Lucy's sewing machine with stacks of fabric and patterns. "You sew?" Megan asked her. "Yeah, I make my own clothes and sell costumes online. Mom can't afford to get me fancy clothes, so grandma taught me how to sew when I was like eight, I've been sewing ever since. I even make my own patterns and sell those. Here let me show you some of the things I've made." Lucy said as she stood up and opened her closet. Some things were store bought and simple, but the majority of her things were gorgeous and handmade. Some of the dresses were even nicer than store bought dresses, and everything else was just as amazing.
"Wow, these are gorgeous, you made these yourself?" Megan asked her. "Yeah. I mean I don't want to be a fashion designer or a seamstress or anything like that, but it's a fun hobby." Lucy told her. "I think Lacey would enjoy learning how to sew, could you teach her?" Megan asked her. "Sure, I would love to." Lucy said with a smile. Megan then turned her attention to something she thought was odd. "What are these?" Megan asked as she picked one of the objects up. "Those are ocarinas." Lucy replied as she stood up. "Ocarinas?" Megan asked her. "Yeah, they're musical instruments...I'd show you, but well..." Lucy said as she showed Megan her hands. "I'll show you how to play it. Take the ocarina and place your left hand down here, and your right hand up here." Lucy said as she helped her position her hands. "Now just blow into the top, but make sure to do a 'tut' sound, like this." Lucy said as she showed her.
Megan played the low C on it and looked at the instrument one more. "That is kinda cool." Megan said a she placed the ocarina back on it's stand on the shelf. "You play video games?" Megan asked as she looked at the Super Nintendo hooked up to a TV. "Yeah, I love video games, especially role playing games, they have such elaborate stories, it's like you're in it, you control your actions, and in some games you control your character's destiny." Lucy explained. Megan then noticed a wooden board with legs and lines on the ground, next to it were two wooden bowls. "What is this?" Megan asked her. "A Go board...I play Go all the time with Aunt Maura, she's the one who taught me how to play. I can teach you sometime if you want. It's a pretty complicated game though." Lucy offered. "Thanks, that sounds like fun." Megan smiled. "Oh...you wanted to see that drawing right?" Lucy asked her. She picked up her iPad, but dropped it when her hands started to hurt. "Here, I've got it." Megan told her as she picked up her iPad. Lucy put in the pin number and opened Procreate, she then scrolled to the drawing and opened it. Megan examined the drawing, Lucy was quite good, she saw herself smiling down at Lucy as she held her. Megan placed her hand on her mouth and started to tear up.
"Oh my grandma said she's making gnocchi tonight for us, she would love it if you and Lacey would join us." Lucy told her. "Alright, we would love to." Megan told her. "Actually I have someone I'd like you to meet, would you come with me next door?" Megan asked her. "Sure." Lucy smiled as she got up and followed Megan. "Mom, I'm going next door, I'll be back in a bit." Lucy told her. "Alright have fun sweetie." Jane told her as she waved her off. Lucy then followed Megan next door. "Megan, Lacey is completely upset and won't tell me what's wrong? What did you tell her?" Joan asked as she looked at Megan. "The truth...she's angry that I lied to her about Lucy..." Megan told her. "Speaking of which, mom, this is Lucy." Megan said as she stepped away from Lucy. "Hello...it's very nice to meet you." Lucy told her.
"Lucy?" she asked as she got a good look at her, she was identical to Lacey in every way. Joan stepped closer and gave Lucy a hug. She was taken aback, but hugged her back after a few moments. She now had two moms and two grandmothers, but wasn't sure on her biological father, but she didn't want to ask, she figured it would probably be awkward and she might not want to talk about it, she knew all about it from her mother. Joan let go after a few moments. "Have you told Todd about Lucy?" Joan asked her. "Not yet..." Megan said to her. "Don't you think he has a right to know? He is her father after all." Joan told her. "I told him." Lacey said as she came out. "I should go...it was nice meeting you Mrs. Hunt." Lucy told her before leaving. "You told him?" Megan asked. "Yeah. He'll be here tonight." Lacey replied. "I have to go." Joan said before hugging Lacey and leaving. "Lace, Lucy's grandmother has invited us to dinner. They're making gnocchi." Megan told her.
"What's gnocchi?" Lacey asked her. "A potato dumpling dish, it's Italian." Megan explained to her. "Mom...I'm sorry...I...I was angry, but I understand now, I would be a workaholic too if I were in your shoes." Lacey told her. "Thanks Lace...why don't you go talk to Lucy? She thinks you hate her." Megan said to her. "Alright, I will...I'll be back." Lacey said as she kissed her mother's cheek and went next door. A blonde haired woman answered it. "Lacey right?" she asked. "Yeah, I wanted to talk to Lucy." Lacey said to her. "Come on in, I'm Dr. Maura Isles. You've met Lucy's mother Jane, and this is her mother Angela." Maura introduced them. "Wow Lacey, you look just like Lulu." Angela said to her. "Lulu?" Lacey asked her. "Lucy, it's our nickname for her." Angela laughed. "Oh, alright." Lacey said to her.
"Lacey, do you like chocolate chip cookies?" Angela asked her. "I love them, but I have diabetes, so I shouldn't have one." Lacey told her. "Well you can take these to your mother, and if she lets you, have one." Angela told her. "Lucy! Cookies are ready!" Angela called out. "Coming!" Lucy yelled back as she came out of her room. "Are you sure these are nut free grandma?" Lucy asked her before taking one. "I'm positive." Angela told her. "Okay, thank you grandma." Lucy told her as she took a cookie. Lucy took a bite "Sooooo good!" Lucy said with her mouth full once more. "Lucy, don't talk with your mouth full." Angela scolded her once more. Lucy swallowed her bite. "Sorry grandma." Lucy told her.
Lucy turned and noticed Lacey. "Want one?" she asked her. "Sorry, my mom would kill me, I have diabetes." Lacey told her. "Ah okay." Lucy told her. She went back to being quiet around Lacey. "Lucy, I'm sorry if I made you think that I hated you, I don't...I was just mad at my...no our mom." Lacey told her. "I appreciate that...thanks..." Lucy replied to her. "Can I ask...what happened to your hands?" Lacey asked Lucy. "She was kidnapped by a serial killer that was after me. Your mom and I found her with scalpels pinning her hands down." Jane told her. "She saved her life..." she added. "Yeah...that sounds like her." Lacey replied with a smile.
"Can I see your room?" Lacey asked Lucy. "Sure. Come with me." Lucy told her as she led her to her room. Lacey looked at Lucy's trophies once she entered the room. "Wow, you play a lot of sports." Lacey remarked. "Yeah, my mom and I love sports, we always watch the Red Sox games on TV together." Lucy told her. "Hockey? You play hockey?" Lacey asked her. "Field hockey, I'm an attacker, just like my mom was." Lucy told her. "I love your dress...where did you get it?" Lacey asked her. "I made it...I make most of my clothes. My mom can't afford anything really nice so I make and sell my own clothes and patterns. " Lucy told her as she pointed to her sewing machine. "Wow, that's so cool. Do you think you can teach me? I want to be a fashion designer one day." Lacey asked her. "Sure, I told your mom I would love to." Lucy told her.
"You know, she's your mom too, and I bet she would like it if you called her mom." Lacey informed her. "I...I can't...I would disrespect the person in the world that I love the most. I'm very sorry." Lucy told her. "Are you and your mom close?" Lacey asked her. "Yeah, my family is really close...except my grandfather...I've never met him. He treated my grandma very poorly, and he never came by anyway. I suspect that he didn't come by because I was adopted. I'm fine with never meeting him." Lucy told her.
"So what about your Aunt Maura?" Lacey asked her. "What about her?" Lucy asked. "She doesn't really look like your mom." Lacey replied. "Oh, well she's not related to my mom. She's just her best friend, honorary aunt. I love spending time with her. She and I have a lot in common." Lucy told her. "Like what?" Lacey asked. "We're both really nerdy, we both love fashion...I like reading her medical books, I wanna be like her some day." Lucy replied. "What exactly does she do?" Lacey asked. "Well, she's a Chief Medical Examiner, actually I think she's now your mom's boss." Lucy laughed. "That'll go over really well, no one tells mom what to do. She kinda does what she wants." Lacey replied. "I'll be sure to let Aunt Maura know that." Lucy laughed. "So you want to be like mom?" Lacey asked her. "Yeah, I guess I do." Lucy replied.
"So...what kinds of things do you like Lacey?" Lucy asked Lacey. "I like drawing, I also ride horses." Lacey told her. "Oh wow, that's interesting. I've never ridden before." Lucy replied. "Mom used to ride, she got me interested." Lacey told her. "I've never even seen a horse in person." Lucy replied. "You should come with me next time." Lacey said with a smile. "Okay, that would be nice." Lucy told her. The girls talked until dinner, getting to know each other. Lacey learned that her sister had severe asthma and was deathly allergic to seafood, tree nuts, and peanuts, while Lucy learned that she did have a father, and that he would be meeting her...tonight. This made Lucy incredibly nervous.
"What does your mom do?" Lacey asked her, trying to calm her down a bit. "She's a detective." Lucy replied as she looked at Lacey. "Lulu, it's time for your nebulizer." Jane said to her. "Oh okay, I'll be back in a bit." Lucy told Lacey as she followed her mother to the table. She had already set it up and Lucy put her face in the mask and breathed it in. "Lucy, I've got to go, I'll be back in a few, mom wants me." Lacey said before leaving. Lucy finished her treatment and sighed. It was almost dinner time, and Lucy wasn't sure she wanted to meet her father. She had never had one before, and that made her nervous.
"Lulu, what's wrong?" Jane asked her as she took the nebulizer. "Lacey told me that...that her father is coming tonight to meet me." Lucy told her. "Are you nervous?" Jane asked. Lucy nodded, her body shaking. Jane walked back over and tried to comfort her daughter. She brushed Lucy's hair behind her ear. "It's going to be okay Lulu, I'll be with you okay?" Jane reassured her. Lucy nodded and hugged her mother. "Thanks mom." Lucy said to her. "You are so welcome Lulu, I love you so much, never forget that." Jane replied. "I love you too mom, more than anything." she said as she continued to hug her. Jane kissed the top of her head and rubbed her back with her hand. Lucy loved her mother's hugs, she could tell how much she loved her with each one.
"Let me see your hands Lulu." Jane told her as she broke free from the hug. Lucy showed her mother her hands. "The bandages need to be changed again. Sit tight Lulu." Jane told her. "Hey Maura, can you see if we have anymore bandages and gauze? Lucy's need to be changed again." Jane said as she looked around for her bandages. Maura nodded and went into the bathroom to go look, but didn't see any. "I think Megan used the last of them. I'll go see if she has any we can use." Maura told her. "Oh would you bring her these cookies? Oh and invite Lucy's father to dinner would you, I think it would help make Lucy more comfortable." Angela asked as she handed her a plate of cookies with cling wrap on them. "Sure." Maura said as she left.
Maura knocked on the door with the plate in hand. "Maura, come in." Megan told her. "Angela made these cookies for you two, and she would like to invite Lucy's father to dinner." Maura said to her. "She thinks that it might make Lucy feel more comfortable." Maura added. "Oh, well...we'll see if he has time." Megan replied. "Do you have any gauze and bandages, Lucy's bandages need to be changed again and Jane hasn't had time to run to the store." Maura requested. "I should, let me help her...I'd like to." Megan replied. "She'd like that." Maura told her. Megan set the cookies on the counter and went into her bag, taking out some bandages and some gauze. "Lacey, I'm going to change Lucy's bandages, when your father comes over let him in." Megan told her. "Okay mom." Lacey replied.
Megan followed Maura back to Jane's condo while Jane and Lucy were talking. "Mom...what if he hates me...I...I'm not ready..." Lucy said to her mother. "No one could ever hate you Lulu..." Jane said as she pulled Lucy close and kissed the top of her head once more. Lucy winced in pain, her hands were really bothering her, they were starting to go numb as well as feeling prickly. Lucy didn't like where this was going. "Lulu, what's wrong?" Jane asked her. "Nothing...it's nothing." Lucy lied as she stared at her hands. "I brought bandages and gauze, I can change those for you." Megan said to them. "Okay, thank you." Jane said to her. "Lucy, I know you're lying, we'll talk later." Jane said as she pat her daughter's leg and stood up and went to help her mother with dinner.
"So, you lied to her?" Megan asked. Lucy nodded slightly. "What about?" asked Megan. Lucy raised her hand. "She asked me about them...she saw me in pain..." replied Lucy. "What exactly are you feeling?" Megan asked her. "Pins and needles...and my hands going numb..." admitted Lucy. "I just...I don't want to worry her..." said Lucy in a soft and quiet voice. Megan knew those symptoms well and now she was worried. "You should tell her." Megan said as she started to unwrap Lucy's bandages. She carefully removed the gauze on both sides before applying new gauze and starting to wrap a new bandage on her hand. "Could you tell her for me?" asked Lucy. Megan nodded "Yeah, I can." she agreed as she started to undo the other bandage.
"Thank you." Lucy told her. "You're welcome." replied Megan. "If you want to ever talk, my door is always open." Megan added. "I'd like that..." Lucy replied. Megan replaced the gauze on her other hand before wrapping it in a bandage. "There you go sweetie." Megan smiled at her. "Thank you." Lucy smiled back. "I should go, I'll be back in a bit okay?" Megan said as she kissed her forehead. Lucy smiled at her once more before going over to talk to Jane about what she had learned. Once she was finished Megan left once more.
