This is probably my first story in a long while, so I can't say it will be great. I do hope you enjoy it, and will continue to follow this story as it unfolds. Please, after you read it, I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Also, I am a mother who works and takes care of children, so updates will probably sporadic. Forgive me. I hope you like it, though!

P.S. I do not own Gotham, any copyrights, or any affiliations with the show. This is merely my own spin on things.

This takes place in season 2, after Nathaniel Barnes has taken over as Captain of the GCPD.

It was early. Around 5:30 a.m. I was locking up my apartment, getting ready to go to the GCPD for an interview. I attached my keys to my little black messenger back with the clip I had on the keychain. I absolutely adore my little bag, it's a faux leather messenger bag with a pentagram on the front of the flap, plus a matching wallet inside with my ID and other such things. I was wearing a nice black pencil skirt, a deep red blouse, (almost blood red, and probably showing too much cleavage, but it's one of the few nice ones I own), as well as a black blazer to match the skirt. After heading out the lobby of my apartment building, I started walking towards the GCPD, my red strappy high heels clicking on the sidewalk as I went.

Soon, I was walking up the steps and into the precinct, looking around at the somewhat controlled chaos. Not sure of where to go, I went to the desk sergeant and waited for a moment while they finished up with the person in front of me. I smiled politely as I stepped up to them. "Hello, my name is Salem Thorne. I'm supposed to have an interview with the commissioner?" I asked. They checked their computer and nodded. "Yes, you are a bit early. You can wait in the Captain's office, right over there." They pointed to the office up the short steps directly across the precinct lobby from his desk. I spoke my thanks and walked over, my heels clicking on the concrete floor as I made my way to the open office door.

I knocked gently on the door frame, smiling a bit as the Captain looked up at me. "Hello, Salem Thorne, I'm here for an interview with the commissioner. The desk sergeant said I could wait in your office?" He smiled and gestured to a chair, "Of course, Ms. Thorne. I'm Captain Nathaniel Barnes. The commissioner actually just called and said they wouldn't be able to make it in today, though. So if it is alright with you, I will be conducting your interview." I smiled politely. "That sounds lovely, Captain Barnes. I have no qualms with that." I set my bag down beside my chair and smoothed my hands down my skirt.

Two Hours Later

I believe my interview was very successful. Captain Barnes walked me out of his office and shook my hand, saying I could start today. I gladly accepted and followed his directions up to the forensics lab on the next level. I was halfway up the stairs when someone called to me, "Hey, lady!" I turned around on the staircase to see a scruffy looking man in a fedora walking over to the stairs. "You the new forensic chick? The name's Harvey. Harvey Bullock. I'm one of the detectives you'll be working with." He chuckled slightly and I smiled, trying to be polite, "Yes, I am. Salem Thorne. If you'll excuse me, I was on my way to the lab so I can get started."

He just nodded, turning back and heading to what looked to be his desk, almost miffed that I wanted to head up to the forensics lab. I just turned back and finished up the stairs, making my way to the door that read "Edward Nygma: Forensics". I knocked on the door, waiting patiently as someone shuffled about inside the office before opening the door suddenly, looking flustered, a rather tall man with short blackish-brown hair and glasses greeted me. He looked a bit puzzled by me standing there, "Uh, hello, miss. W-what can I do for you?" I smiled up at him, holding my hand out. "Salem Thorne. I was just hired as an assistant to the forensic science technicians. Which, under my assumption, you would be one of them, Mr. Nygma." I stated as he shook my hand.

He looked slightly shocked at my knowledge, soon letting go of my hand. He stood there a moment, dumbstruck. Then he shook his head, a bright smile taking over his features, "Yes, of course. My apologies, Ms. Thorne. I must have forgotten. Do come in." He stepped back to allow me entry into the office space. I looked around to see it was a typical forensics lab, slash office. Two desks off to one side, sort of making a little corner in the office as one faced towards the lab counters and the other faced towards the door. I walked over to see a plaque on one(the one facing the door) that had Mr. Nygmas name engraved on it, and the other desk had a plaque that had my own name printed, looking freshly laser etched.

I nodded and set my bag beside my desk by the wall, resting my coat on the hook of the coat rack in the corner inside the small space of the two desks. I turned around to see Mr. Nygma looking at me curiously, obviously sizing me up. I smirked slightly, noticing his gaze directed at my legs. I couldn't be upset, I mean, my legs are one of my greatest features. Perfectly toned, slender. I quickly schooled my features as he looked up, realizing I was facing him now. His cheeks turned red at the realization, and he began to stutter. "S-so, u-uh, Ms. Thorne…I-I understand it that you have, um, the same qualifications as myself. I know th-that, um, Captain Barnes hired you to be an assistant, though I-I'm sure that you will soon be doing things on your own. I-I hope th-that we can work well together." he spoke, flustered at having been caught eyeing me, adjusting his glasses. I assumed it was a nervous tick of his.

I smiled as I stepped over to him, my heels clicking on the floor. "I do hope so, Mr. Nygma. It is true that I was hired to help out here in the Forensics department. I intend to put that degree to good use here, as well as helping out in the lab and at crime scenes as I am needed." I stated. He simply nodded, smiling again and heading to his desk, picked up a file and handing it to me with renewed excitement. "Shall we get started, Ms. Thorne?"

After several hours of Mr. Nygma showing me around the lab, and explaining to me how he usually operates in the office, slash lab, I sat at my desk going over some paperwork on a case he had presented to me. He had said it was the current case Detectives Gordon and Bullock were working on. I spent a good hour and 30 minutes reading over the file, checking on things around the lab while Mr. Nygma was busy elsewhere. I wasn't sure where he had scurried off to in such a hurry, but I thought perhaps it was important to him. I decided I would set the file down for a bit, getting up and grabbing my coat. I stepped out of the office and began heading down the stairs to the main lobby.

As I get to the bottom of the stairs, a rather handsome man walked over, smiling slightly. "Hi, Jim Gordon, homicide." he said politely, holding his hand out to me. I took his hand in mine, shaking it firmly. He looked a bit shocked at my strong grip. "Thats some handshake, miss." he laughed slightly. I smiled at him as I let go. "Thanks, I work out a bit. Salem Thorne. I'm the new forensics assistant." I said, crossing my arms across my chest. "It's nice to meet you, Detective Gordon. I was just on my way to go get lunch." He nodded in understanding, "My girlfriend and I were actually about to get lunch, too. Would you like to join us?" I nodded in agreement, following him to the main door as a tall woman with chin length black hair walked up to him.

She smiled pleasantly at me, taking Jims arm in her own. "Hi, you must be Salem, I'm Leslie Thompkins, the medical examiner, but you can just call me Lee." I smiled back at her, nodding. "Yes, it's a pleasure. I hope you don't mind, Jim invited me to lunch with you two." She looked over at Jim, smiling as if she knew he was going to do just that, then looked back to me and gestured for me to walk with them. I followed them out into the street, walking with them to a small diner about a block from the precinct. Once inside, we took our seats, Jim and Lee sitting beside each other while I sat across from them. "So, how are you liking your first day, Salem? I hope Jim hasn't been running you ragged yet." she chided playfully as she gently nudged him with her elbow.

I giggles softly, shaking my head, "No, no, I've mostly been up in the lab with Mr. Nygma. He's quite interesting, to say the least. He kept asking me riddles while showing me around the lab, and was actually quite shocked that I had gotten them all right." Lee's eyebrows rose in surprise at my admission. I gave her a confused look before she spoke. "I didn't expect you to take up with Ed that quickly. He can be a bit…quirky, but he is super sweet. I'm glad you're making a friend out of him." I smiled at that, sipping on my tea that was set down for me.
