"Do you love me, brother?"
Hikigaya Hachiman was walking around his neighborhood with his sister Komachi, when this question popped up. It was completely out of the blue and Hikigaya was caught off guard. They had been going on these nightly walks for awhile now and the tone had always been rather nonchalant, she had never asked questions like this
He glared at her in confusion, not knowing how to answer.
"Why ask this question now?"
"I have a deep regard for you." He said as he continued walking. He hoped that this answer would satisfy her and she wouldn't push this further.
This answer did not suffice for Komachi.
"But that's not what I asked you. I asked, do you love me?" She said making a pouty face. "It's a simple yes or no question."
"Why? Do you want to have a romantic relationship?" Hachiman asked in a sarcastic tone, slightly annoyed by the fact that she was pushing for an answer. He was not one to share his feelings and she knew that.
"Ew gross! You damn siscon." She said slapping him.
"That hurt." He said, rubbing his cheek.
"You had it coming. Now answer my question. I'm curious because I've never heard you tell me before."
As much as Hikigaya Hachiman would have loved to hide his feelings forever, he knew that she wasn't going to let go of this until he gave her an answer. After a brief period of silence, he spoke.
"You are very important to me, and some might say that I love you." He mumbled the last part in hopes that she would accept that response. She didn't.
"I'm sorry. What was that last part?" She said, with a grin on her face.
"Some people might say that I love you…" Hikigaya repeated.
"And what would you say?"
"I would agree with those people." He grumbled, his face getting redder.
"Aww! Onii-chan gets so cute when he is flustered."
"Shut up…"
They continued walking together until they reached the intersection that they usually turned back at. Hachiman saw that across the street, at a gas station, they were having a sale on popsicles. He was hoping that his sister wouldn't see this, so he turned around and started walking back home.
Suddenly he felt a tight grip on his jacket.
"Onii-chan! 2 for $1, that's perfect for us!" His sister yelled.
She was pointing at the sign and had a look of pure joy on her face.
"Do you have money?"
"Well… no. But you probably do…" She said, casting him a cute glance.
"Ahgh… fine." He mumbled, handing her a dollar.
He may try to hide his emotions, but Hikigaya Hachiman just can't resist smiling when his sister is like this. Of course, once he realized what he was doing, he immediately snapped back to his regular "dead inside" look.
"I'll be back in a jiffy..." She said, sprinting across the street, "...Don't leave me!"
"Like I would ever do that." Hachiman said with a grin.
While she was in the store Hikigaya reminisced on their conversation.
"Do you love me, brother?"
Ever since a young age, it had just been him and her against the world. When their parents died he was the one that had to step up and take care of her as a baby. She was his only family and up until recently (when his Sensei made him join a Service Club), his only friend.
"Yes, of course I love you, you are the world to me." He whispered silently to nobody. Hikigaya Hachiman was not the type to share his feelings, but if he was, that's what he would have said to her. He sometimes wished that he had told her that more, but he always ended up putting it off.
While he was deep in his thoughts, he saw the gas station doors slide open across the street. Out came his sister with two popsicles, both blue, her favorite color.
As she was running across the street, Hikigauya subconsciously noticed a truck that was going very fast…
….and not stopping…
"KOMACHI! LOOK OUT!" He yelled, desperately rushing forward to try and push her out of the way of the truck. Hachiman dove in an attempt to get to her, but he was too late. The truck rammed into both of them...
…
…
Hachiman was fading in and out of consciousness to immense pain. He never thought he would die like this. Through his blurred vision, he saw the truck speeding away. He was sprawled out on the ground and above He saw something that would forever be imprinted into his mind.
His little sister was on the ground surrounded by blood, her eyes seemingly glazed over, lifeless. Mustering up his remaining strength he tried to crawl towards her. Each inch moved was excruciatingly painful for Hachiman, but he couldn't feel the pain at that moment, all that mattered was that he reached Komachi.
Even though Hachiman's spirit was tough, his body failed him and he blacked out on the street.
The last thing that I heard was a weak "... I love you too… brother…"
