Elena woke up not to the sun shining on her face but to a migraine, it was around morning as she groaned and got out of the bed, the events of the previous night rushing to her mind. She took a deep breath to get the images out of her, the headache first, and then feeling guilty. She opened the side drawer, and took out the injection, and injected it into her body, it honestly was like Elixir to the migraine. She thanked her father in her mind for thankfully teaching her to use an injection. She took out her phone and saw that there were a few missed calls on them all from the same number, squinting slightly she realized with a jolt that it was Damon's number. She took a nervous breath as she realized that he had left a few text messages, he would be so angry and hurt. she thought. She took a deep breath again, she seemed to be doing that a lot nowadays and checked the messages,
Answer my call, Elena
or are you too busy playing housemates with the originals, huh
I hate you, you are no better than Katherine, oh wait you are worst, at least she didn't sleep with her family's killer.
I wonder what would Jenna think, what would Jeremy think, they must hate you now, right.
Answer my call, or are you too scared to pick up.
Everyone hates you, you know,
You traitor,
And there were insults after insults, one after the other, and Elena stopped reading after a while as she felt tears cloud her vision, those messages hurt more than she cared to admit and what hurts more that it was all true she could literally read Damon's hurt through the texts. She wished this all to be a nightmare but it wasn't and she had to deal with it, and so got out of the bed silenced her phone, and went in to take a shower, the faces of both of her past lovers imprinted in her mind.
"We had a deal!" Klaus yells at Sophie Devereaux as he whooshes and pushes her down onto the couch. "You protect my unborn children and I dismantle Marcel's army. And whilst I've been busy fulfilling my part of the bargain, you allowed Elena to be attacked and almost killed by a gaggle of lunatic witches."
"I had nothing to do with it, I swear." Sophie shakes her head. "Elena and I are linked remember? Whatever happens to her, happens to me."
"Then who were they?" Rebekah asks
"They are a faction of extremists," Sophie replies. "Sabine stupidly told them about some vision she had about the unborn children."
"What kind of vision?" Klaus frowns.
"She has them all the time," Sophie says. "They are totally open to interpretation. I'm guessing she's wrong on this one."
"Well, how may I ask, was this particular vision interpreted?" Klaus says seriously.
"Pretty much that your daughter would bring death to all witches and your son would be the most powerful being to walk on the earth.." Sophie rolls her eyes.
Klaus smiles widely, "Oh, well, I grow fonder of my children by the second."
"Sophie, look, I promised Elijah that I would protect the Mikaelson miracle children," Rebekah says to Sophie as she sits down across from her. "Besides, Elijah's already trying to win your witch, Davina's loyalty. So why don't you tell me just how extreme this faction is?"
"Elijah's talking to Davina?" Sophie raises a dark eyebrow.
"Yeah, as we speak, I imagine," Rebekah says.
"I'm guessing that she will have plenty to say about that crowd." Sophie sighs.
"Do tell." Klaus smiles as he sits down comfortably on the sofa
"I wasn't always an advocate for the witches," Sophie says. "My sister was devoted like our parents, and our upbringing was very strict, which drove me nuts. The minute I turned twenty-one, I left the quarter to travel, and play. But I wanted to be a chef, so I came back to Rousseau's..."
Flashback
Sophie was partying wildly as Jane-Anne entered Rousseau's. "Ooh..." Sophie smiled widely when she saw her sister. She quickly ran to her. "Jane-Anne! Hey! That wasn't me. Hi!" She giggled as she and Jane-Anne hugged.
"Welcome home, Soph." Jane-Anne grinned. "Can we go someplace to talk?"
"Just tell me." Sophie smiled and shook her head.
"The elders called a vote," Jane-Anne told her. "We're moving forward with the harvest..."
End Flashback
"What the bloody hell is a harvest?" Rebekah frowns.
"It's a ritual our coven does every three centuries so that the bond to our ancestral magic is restored," Sophie says. "We appease our ancestors, they keep our ancestral power flowing."
"And why haven't I heard of this?" Klaus asked not looking pleased.
"Because the harvest always seemed like a myth." Sophie answers. "A story, passed down through generations, like Noah's ark or the Buddha walking on water. The kind some people take literally, and some people don't..."
Flashback
"To be reborn, we must sacrifice," Bastiana said to the kneeled teenage girls as she poked Monique's palm with a knife.
"To be reborn, we must sacrifice," Monique repeated.
"To be reborn, we must have faith." Bastiana continued onto the next girl.
"To be reborn, we must have faith." The girl repeated.
"Do you have faith in the harvest?" Bastiana continued.
"Not for a second." Sophie interrupted as she ran up to them.
Monique turned her head to look at her aunt. "Sophie..."
Bastiana quickly shushed her. "What are you doing?" Sophie shook her head at Bastiana.
"Saving the community you renounced," Bastiana said calmly.
"You're all ridiculous," Sophie said angrily before looking at Monique. "Monique, seriously?!"
"My mom told me I had to," Monique said quietly.
"Yes, well, your mom and I are going to have words," Sophie said before storming off angrily...
End Flashback
"They had the girls of our community preparing for months," Sophie says. "Four would be chosen for the harvest. They said that it was an honor. That they were special. I thought it was a myth."
"Was it?" Rebekah asks.
Before Sophie can answer, Klaus's cellphone rings. He gets up from the couch before standing up and picking up his phone. "Marcel. A bit early in the day for you, isn't it?"
"I know I make this look easy, but I still have an empire to run," Marcel says.
"Rather you than me," Klaus says. "That responsibility seems like such a bore."
"Well, this might spice things up," Marcel says. "I just heard about a bunch of dead witches out in the Bayou. The kind of damage a werewolf might do? Only there was no full moon. I have an informant out there I need to meet, and I would love for you to go with me.
"Dead witches in the Bayou," Klaus says, making Sophie look up quickly. "Sounds like less of a problem and more of a cause for celebration."
"Well, something killed them and may still be out there and with your blood the only cure for a werewolf bite, I would love for you to accompany me," Marcel says. His invitation was not a show of friendship just a convenience in case they all end up getting attacked by whatever wolf is causing trouble in the countryside.
"Well, why not?" Klaus says. "I haven't been to the Bayou in ages. I'm on my way."
"Peace out brother," Marcel says before he and Klaus both hang up.
"You can't go out there now," Sophie says to Klaus quickly. "I need to gather the witches' remains and consecrate them. If I don't get to them before sundown, we lose the link to their magic."
"Those witches attacked Elena," Klaus tells Sophie unhappily. "I prefer for Marcel's informant not to find anything that would lead them back to us, or to Elena or that whatever that is," he said pointing to Elena's stomach.
"They are called babies, just so you know." Elena sighs and shakes her head as she walks into the room. She sounds as if she doesn't believe what she's saying.
"Stay perked." Klaus points at Sophie. "And save the rest of your story till I return..."
Elena walks slowly to the place where she knew she would find Sophie, who swings her backpack over her shoulders just as Elena reached her.
"Hey." Sophie looks at her. "What the hell?" she said
"You're going out there anyway, at the bayou, aren't you?" Elena asks her with a crooked smile. "I want to go with you."
"No thanks," Sophie says. "I already got assaulted by Klaus in the morning, I don't want a repeat. "
"What if whatever is responsible for those dead witches is still out there?" Elena asks her raising an eyebrow at her. "We've already established that it likes me and hates witches, not that you don't deserve it but so you'll be safer with me."
"Sorry if I'm not buying your sudden concern for my safety," Sophie says and is just about to walk away before Elena blocks her way.
"Listen, the whole reason I came to this stupid town in this first place was to learn more about my family," Elena tells her seriously. "Your sister's the one who told me that Marcel ran the werewolves out of the quarter into the Bayou, and last night, pretty sure that some guardian angel wolf saved my life. So I'm coming with you. I just want to find those wolves help them if I could and then I am going back to Mystic Falls, I have to do damage control."
"Could you two be more idiotic?" Rebekah said as she looks at Sophie and Elena who turns around.
"Two can play the following game, you know? You heard Klaus. He and Marcel are heading right where you're going." Rebekah continued
"So distract them," Elena said, "Because unless you want to lock a werewolf with authority issues in a tomb, I'm coming with you." She looks between Rebekah and Sophie. "And wouldn't Elijah be mad if he heard that the babies and I died of asphyxiation? And beside me, the witch is still linked so if she gets killed I do to and I would rather not be killed you know."
" I think I liked you better when you were in Mystic Falls," Rebekah said, looking defeated.
" Well, then you would be rid of me soon enough," Elena said with a smile.
"What's the matter, Rebekah?" Klaus said."You cross I'm out with your ex?" through the phone
"What is that dreadful hill billies ruckus in the background?" Rebekah frowns.
"According to the dreadful signage, it's Big Auggie's Bayou Bar," Klaus said
"Well, order up a few rounds of moonshine and stay clear of the dead witches for a few." Rebekah sighs. "The witch's on a burial mission, your werewolf descendant is on a spirit quest, and I'm trying to keep my promise to Elijah. So stall, please?" She says before hanging up.
Klaus sighed and did a mental countdown in his head to twenty before he went inside the bar to where Marcellus was sitting,
" Everything Ok?" Marcel asks.
" Ah, just the usual temperamental sister," Klaus replies pouring himself a drink, " So where's your informant?"
" Thomas? He is out sniffing around. Let me grab a drink then we will chase him down,"
" Well, I suppose it will give us a chance to talk things over, Like why you haven't returned Elijah, maybe your young witch has grown partial to his company she must get so bored," Klaus said taking off his jacket, Marcel stops in the act of pouring himself a drink and ask,
" You never stop do you?"
" You never answer, do you?"
" Why are you so curious about Davina,"
" If I had a 16-year-old powerful witch at my beck and call, you would wonder about her too."
" You are never gonna get her."
" Ok, ok, I will ask the harmless questions then, how did you meet her,"
" This might surprise you, it was eight months ago, before I banned the witches from using magic,"
Rebekah canceled the call and then looked at Sophie. "So this harvest thingy... Tell me more."
"Klaus said to wait," Sophie replies
"Yes, he also said to stay out of the Bayou, and yet, here we are, amongst the cruelly buzzy creatures." Rebekah rolls her eyes.
"We are here," Elena said as they reach a clearing of sorts where many bodies were lying ripped from limb to limb.
There's a moment of silence as everyone accesses the damage Rebekah looks indifferent, Sophie sad, and Elena tries to avoid looking at those mangled bodies and searches for clues, before she says suddenly, " Are these footprints?"
"Is that a wolf track?" Sophie asked before they hear the sound of a foot stepping on a branch.
"Who's there?" Rebekah calls out loudly. A man appears looking really scared, "What the hell?" he said, "An original..." And then he disappears proving that he was a vampire.
" Bloody hell," Rebekah said before walking a little further and dialing Klaus,
"Let me understand this," Klaus said. "Against all logic, you and Elena followed Sophie into the Bayou where you ran into a man you think may be Marcel's informant, and then, you lost him."
"Yes," Rebekah answers impatiently. "And now that we've established that I'm a failure as a sister, a friend, and an original, you should probably know that he's on his way to Marcel right now to rat me out. Skinny guy in a hurry, looks like he saw a ghost?"
"I'll handle it," Klaus answers. "But I'll need a distraction."
"I'm on my way," Rebekah replies before hanging up.
" You were quite a knight in shining armor," Klaus said, " Though Davina must realize you owe her as much as she owes you. You never could have banned those witches from using magic without her,"
" She was not exactly besties with them," Marcel said," I am protecting her, a lot of them would like to get their hands on her and kill her to finish the harvest. If they don't the other girls stayed dead and they lose their power."
" And if they do you lose yours."
" And Davina loses her life."
" Ah isn't this old times," Rebekah said, as she approaches the two vampires," Just how drunk are you too."
" Skating on the razor's edge, I am gonna use the loo." Klaus said getting up," Back in a tick."
" I haven't seen him this lushy since the twenties. " Rebekah said to Marcel,
" So you have come to take him home," he asked
" Why else would I be here?"
" I don't know, maybe to make sure that I don't get too drunk and spill secrets better left unspilled, about you and me. I know better."
" I hope so because you don't want to end up on the wrong side of me, "
" Oh, Rebekah Mikaelson you do not want to be on the wrong side of me," Marcel said, looking her dead in the eyes.
Elena and Sophie walk back to the car. "Those people..." Elena said suddenly. "All this because of a vision about one of my children that you don't think is true..."
"Look..." Sophie grunts as she puts her bag into the back of the car. "I love Sabine, but she's the witch equivalent of a drama queen. I've learned to take little stock in whatever she says or sees. Just kind of wish that she had kept her mouth shut."
"The harvest ritual, you said that you didn't believe in it," Elena asks. "Were you right?"
"No." Sophie shook her head sadly. "I saw it with my own eyes. It was working, it was real."
"So how can you be so sure Sabine's vision isn't?" There was no reply to this particular question
Marcel walks back to the compound his mind filled with worry over Davina's condition when he heard Klaus,
"Taking me on a field trip to the Bayou to distract me," Klaus said from the second-floor railing. Always so dramatic. "Pathetic and obvious. I taught you better than that."
"You taught me to protect what's mine. I'm on to you, Klaus. You'll not take Davina from me, end of the story. I saved that girl's life and I promised I'd keep her safe. That's exactly what I'm going to do. Keep her safe from you." Marcel replied
"An immutable law of nature, Marcel, is that the strong always take from the weak."
"If you were so strong you wouldn't have run away from New Orleans like a little bitch all those years ago," Marcel said knowing that before the word even got out of his mouth that he had crossed a limit,
Marcel sees in Klaus' dark eyes the moment when the blow lands. His lips curl up into a snarl and, before Marcel can even get out of the way, Klaus jumps from the second floor, a fist connecting with his jaw and sending him flying across the courtyard. Marcel sees stars as his face explodes in pain. It had been a while since he'd faced someone strong enough to take him like that. Let alone someone as strong as Klaus. He knew that if it would come down to a fight between the two there would be no chance of him winning with or without Davina.
"You've been playing king with a bunch of children for too long, Marcel. Don't mistake me for one of your nightwalker lackeys. I can take Davina any time I like," he says, his eyes flashing gold, displaying his now more powerful hybrid nature.
Marcel gets back on his feet, tasting blood on his tongue. This fight has been building up for way too long. They should have it all out in the open, stop pretending to be old pals. At least they'll keep it honest for once. Just as Marcel prepares to charge, someone rounds him from behind and he gets kicked back down, groaning in pain.
"Do forgive me, Marcel," Elijah said wearing one of his classic suits. Elijah smiles, fixing his cuffs and looking straight at Klaus. "If anyone is to teach my brother a lesson, it's going to be me."
"I don't care if we have to get you a leash. That was the last trip to the Bayou. What is it with you and those wolves anyway?" Rebekah said, pouring herself a drink and another for Elena, she seemed to have forgotten the fact that she was pregnant.
" I think we are connected somehow, maybe they are from my birth father's side. I don't know, maybe it's just these visions that I keep on having over and over again, you know like now there is this name that just keeps coming into my mind over and over again, I see one of my friends just running into a very familiar forest and then stabbing me in the front with a knife, which is totally crazy." Elena said and gives Rebekah a look when she offers her a drink.
" Oh yes, who is that friend? "
" Tyler Lockwood."
" Ummm, Klaus first hybrid who betrayed him,"
" No Klaus hybrid who fought for his and his friend's freedom from a sire bond ."
" Difference of opinion darling. Why are you so intent on finding these wolves?" Elena looks surprised that Rebekah would ask her such a question before answering,
" Well, I guess I don't want to be alone. I mean now I feel like it's me against the whole world, which is strange because till now, after what I had someone with me at my side and now being alone..., well let's just say that I don't want to be like that."
" Well if you ask me, we girls are, much better when we are free and as for being in it alone, How dare you? I don't ruin a perfectly fabulous pair of boots traipsing through the bayou for just anyone," Rebekah replied, finishing her second drink and Elena looks shocked for a second before laughing, Rebekah joined her before the door opened and Klaus burst through,
" Well aren't you two fast friends," Klaus said, before Elena phone rings,
" Ummm, I will take this, its Diego," She said before disappearing through the door,
" Nik, finally, What," Rebekah begins before shutting down as Elijah entered and froze for a second while he smiled at his sister, and they both embraced each other,
" Elijah, you are safe," She said looking as though she is quite not believing it," Now that you are home is your first plan to kill Niklaus," Rebekah asked, while her brother looks around the room and kisses her cheek, " Excuse me just a moment." and leaves in the same direction where Elena left previously
" Where he is going?" Rebekah asked, looking confused. Klaus seemed to understand and he did not look pleased with it.
Elena sat beside the pool as she canceled Diego's call, he had asked her out for another date although this time he told her they were going trekking and she had willingly consented, she had started off rather reluctantly to date a guy she had no interest in during the few dates they had, had started to enjoy his company, she checked her phone and saw a text message and recognized the number as Caroline's
Please tell me it is not real, her friend had texted. Elena texted back,
I could, but I would be lying
I am so sorry.
" I hope I am not intruding," A voice said from around her, and Elena turned back in surprise,
" Elijah," she said, he smiled,
" Elena,"
" Oh my God, I... I didn't know, I ... when?... I mean." She stopped,
" Welcome back." She said,
" Well its good to be back," he said sitting beside her, " I do hope you had no problems from my siblings when I was gone,"
" Ummm, no actually they were pretty good, more hospitable than I expected,"
" Well, that may be because of the fact that you have had always thought of them as monsters before that,"
" Well, I hadn't been given a reason not to,"
" Very true," they sat in companionable silence for a while before Elena spoke up,
" So, how was this Davina?"
" Well, she is not more than sixteen and has a desire to be free honestly I feel that she is confused more than anything ."
" So Marcel really wants to help her,"
" I believe that he saved her life intending to help her but on learning about the amount of power she has decided to use her to control the witches but he does seem to care about her. So anything new that happened in your life while I was away,"
Elena laughed," Maybe I will tell you sometime, Welcome back Elijah," she said as Elijah got up to meet his siblings.
"Everything that brought us here to New Orleans was a lie," Elijah told Klaus and Rebekah,
"The story that Sophie Devereaux fabricated, this struggle for control of the French Quarter, this war between vampires and witches, it wasn't over territory at all. This was over Davina."
Elijah took a breath before continuing. "Eight months ago, Sophie Devereaux and her sister Jane-Anne, lost everything. Four months after that, a pregnant girl is taken into the French Quarter, and suddenly all hope was renewed. Jane-Anne actually sacrificed her life so that her sister could use Niklaus to find Davina. If Sophie Devereaux is successful in capturing Davina, she can return Jane-Anne's daughter back to life. We thought we had come here to wage a war for power, but this is about family. In order to return her niece to life, Sophie Devereaux will fight to the death. That makes her more dangerous than anyone..."
And somewhere Sophie Deveraux weeps on the grave of her recently deceased sister and makes a promise to bring her sister's daughter back to life.
