Jess only stayed a few more days, Sam and Sarah had bought some of the cheaper easier to get parts and she offered to stay to help them put the parts in. At the moment she was standing in the kitchen with Sarah chatting away as she helped her prepare for lunch when both of them got a notification on their phones.

Check the news. Rhodey just told me that the government took the shield out of the Smithosonian and they're going to give it to some John Walker guy. Tony had sent to Jess, she looked up to see that Sarah had either gotten a text much like it or had found out some other way. Both of them turned and walked towards the living room dreading having to tell Sam. Sarah got to the living room first, Jess could see Sam's back turned towards them having just finished talking to someone on the phone. 'He probably doesn't even know what's going to happen.' She thought.

"Oh, my God, Sam. You better look at this." Sarah said as she grabbed the remote and turned the tv on. Sam turned his attention to the television, Sarah stood behind him and Jess stopped on the other side so that she could see the screen better. There was an older white man in a dark blue suit standing at a podium talking, a little red and blue ticker underneath held the worlds BREAKING NEWS as if they hadn't been planning this all along.

"Unrest, in the wake of recent events has left us vulnerable. Every day Americans feel it. While we love heroes who put their lives on the line to defend Earth," Jess looked over at Sarah, she had her hand up to her mouth and Jess could tell that she was trying to not get upset "we also need a hero to defend this country. We need a real person who embodies America's greatest values. We need someone to inspire us again." Jess looked at Sam now, he was just sitting in his chair looking at the television in shock. "Someone who can be a symbol for all of us," Jess walked over and gently touched Sarah's left arm when she saw her look down at the ground, as bad as she felt she could only imagine how Sarah and Sam felt at that moment "so, on behalf of the Department of Defense and our Commander-in-Chief, it is with great honor that we announce here today that the United States of America has a new hero." Jess let out a scoff at that and shook her head. "Join me in welcoming your new Captain America." Sarah let out a sniffle and Jess wrapped her arm around her while glaring at the screen, who she assumed was John Walker came out with the shield on his arm. She watched as he waved to the crowd but Jess just rolled her eyes and looked away, she rubbed Sarah's arm as she heard the other woman take a shaky breath. Of course Sam wasn't good enough to be Captain America in their eyes, he wasn't some blonde haired blue eyed pretty boy. She looked over at Sam who had his eyes closed and his head was down, Jess took the remote from Sarah's hand and turned the television off.

"I think we've heard enough of that bullshit." She said as she gently put the controller down on the table. She watched as Sam ran his hands over his head before he got up and walked out of the room. Jessica looked at Sarah who was trying to compose herself, "Are you okay?".

"Yeah, I mean I guess we shouldn't have been surprised huh? I don't know why I expected anything other than that." She said before sitting down on the chair.

"Uh hey. Guys. Who was supposed to be watching the food?" Sam asked, Sarah let out a gasp and Jess ran into the kitchen to see that Sam had barely turned the stove off in time to keep the water in the pot they had put on from boiling over. "And Sarah always makes fun of my cooking." He mumbled as he made sure the water had gone down.

"I am so sorry I should have stayed here and kept an eye on it. I swear I'm a better cook than this." Jess said and Sam laughed.

"It's fine. I would have put the food in and let it burn so you did better than me." He said with a grin as he turned the burner back on just enough to keep the water warm while Jess added in the food.

"Did you keep it from going over?" Sarah asked from the doorway.

"Yeah he did. The Falcon saves the day again." Jess said while Sam did a goofy pose.

"Well, I didn't think that the water almost boiling over was an Avengers level threat but I see that I was wrong." Sarah joked. Both women started to laugh while Sam headed outside.

"Yuk it up you two. See if I save your noodles next time."

"Maybe Ant-Man will be willing to help." Jess called out.

"Yeah right. Tiny only thinks that he can do it as good as me." Sam said before walking off of the porch. Both Sarah and Jessica rolled their eyes at him before going back to working on lunch for the three of them.

Before she went back to her hotel room she found Sam at the docks, he had disappeared shortly after dinner and she just wanted to go down to check on him. She found him sitting on the boat looking out at the water "Hey Sam." She said as she walked up. He slowly looked up at her before looking back down.

"Hey Jess. Getting ready to leave?" he asked.

"Yeah. I got stuff to do back home. I'll still come and visit. Only been a few days and Delacroix has grown on me." She said as she sat down next to him. "You know. That shield doesn't mean anything right Sam? Just because they gave it to someone else doesn't mean you're not a good man."

"That's not the point. I knew that they'd never accept me being Cap and it's so much to be asked of me from Steve and Bucky. So I figured that if I retired the shield the world would move on from Captain America. I mean we made it through seventy years without a Cap so why did we need one now?" he said with a shrug.

"The world's crazy Sam. I know that you got dusted so you don't know what it was like in the five years that you guys were gone. Everyone got along, there was more than enough food for everyone. Nature was starting to recover. And then all of you came back, now so many people are displaced. People that had jobs before don't have it now, they don't have homes. Their families and friends have moved on, I've had so many friends of mine that were dusted coming back only to find out that their significant other has moved on to someone else. I agree that we need someone to help lead us. I just wish they had picked someone that doesn't look like they tried to copy and paste Steve." Sam laughed at that part and looked over at her.

"I'm sure that Steve loves that fact."

"And let's be honest Sam. We both know that he's just going to be the government's puppet. You don't seem like the kind that would be into that whole song and dance thing. I know Steve said that he hated it."

"That's a good point. I don't think that I'd ever want to do that." The two of them looked out at the water as they watched the sun slowly sinking down.

"So who were you on the phone with?"

"Oh buddy of mine named Joaquin Torres. He's investigating this group called the Flag Smashers."

"I've heard of them. They came out of the woodwork not to long after people came back. Threw a fit because the government was trying to help the people that had returned get settled in. I mean I get that it's not right to force people that have resettled somewhere to leave and to lose their jobs but the messages I've heard," she shook her head before looking at him "I don't like it Sam. It gives me a bad feeling about what they're willing to do to get their way."

"They're just a bunch of kids Jessica."

"Not all of them. I mean their leader Karli is but some of them are adults. And I've seen the things they've posted online. They're not going to just peacefully protest." Sam thought about Torres's face, people peacefully protesting didn't hit people.

"I know. That's why I'm going to go check it out for myself."

"How would you be able to do that?"

"Well I have contracts with the military. But if something like this comes up I can go and check it out if I want. Nice thing about being a free agent."

"The government won't try to stop you?"

"The government won't know."

"Well what ever you're planning I know nothing if anyone asks. And if you do go do something than just be careful Sam. Alright? Your sister and your nephews need you. I know she hasn't really said it but I can tell from the way she acts that not knowing if she would ever see you again for five straight years upset her. She tries so hard to be strong because she thinks she has to be. Don't give her more to worry about." She said before she stood up and walked towards her car.

"I promise." Sam called out before turning back to the water.
