The plane starts taxing down the runway. The pilot comes over the speaker.

"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, this is the captain speaking. I would like to welcome you on board flight 1187 flying non-stop to Miami International Airport. The weather looks great the whole way there, and we should arrive at 5:30 pm local time. Thank you for choosing to fly with us, and enjoy your flight."

The plane gets to the beginning of the runway and takes off. It climbs through the clouds and over the woods. All is quiet until suddenly something breaks off inside the left engine. It dies, sending whatever broke off flying out of the engine and hitting the side of the plane where Athena is sitting. A giant hole punctures the side, and the woman sitting next to Athena starts to get sucked out of the hole. She grabs her and struggles to hold onto her until the man sitting next to her helps pull the woman back in.

Everyone hears the commotion and screaming coming from the back of the plane but they can't see what is happening. The plane starts dropping rapidly and swaying from side to side. The air masks fall down out of the ceiling and everyone puts theirs on.

"Please remain calm," the flight attendant calls over the speaker. "Fasten your seat belts and return your trays to their upright position. We will be going back to the airport and making an emergency landing."

The plane starts to turn around. It keeps dropping faster and faster and the ground keeps getting closer.

Audrey looks at Maddie with fear in her eyes. "We're going to crash," Audrey cries.

The old lady sitting in between them has her eyes closed and is crying. Both Maddie and Audrey take her hands and hold them tight.

Karen can see the flight attendants scrambling in the front of the plane. One pokes her head into the cockpit. She listens to what the pilot says then quickly closes the door. She whispers to the other flight attendant, then they both sit down in their seats and get buckled. The flight attendant grabs the intercom phone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are making an emergency landing. Brace for landing. Place your feet on the floor, cross your wrists and hold onto the seat in front of you."

Everyone gets into the brace position. People start crying and screaming as the plane flies closer to the trees.

"Brace, brace, brace!" The flight attendants chant over and over again.

The pilots are pressing buttons trying to land the plane as safely as possible. They look calm, but their demeanor says otherwise. They see an opening in the tree line and aim for that.

Everyone is bracing for impact. Anthony has one hand on his head and one hand on Zoe.

The pilot attempts to land on the clearing, but the plane is going too fast. The plane goes skidding up the hill, slowing down as it goes. It doesn't slow down enough and it starts skidding through the trees.

Inside the airplane, everyone is screaming and crying. Zoe is screaming. Anthony is trying to protect her with his one hand. He decides to unbuckle his seat belt and cover her with his body. As soon as he does that, a loud crashing sound tears through the plane.

It skids through the trees and hits a large rock. Upon impact, the plane breaks in half. Everything in front of the wings goes down one side of the hill toward the river while everything from the wings, back goes down the other side of the hill down a rocky cliff. Everything gets quiet as both halves of the plane come to a rest.

... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...

The plane is quiet for a moment. Everyone sits up, realizing what just happened. Jo sits up, her hand going to the gash above her eye. She looks over at Zoe who is screaming, but Anthony isn't in his seat.

"Anthony?" She looks around, then looks back. The back half of the plane is gone and is wide open. "Oh my gosh."

Smoke starts filling the cabin. The flight attendants get up and start opening the emergency exit.

"Everyone, please remain calm. Quickly, but calmly, make your way to the emergency exit. Leave everything and make your way to the front."

Flames start coming from the bottom of the plane and surrounding the cabin. Karen gets out of her seat and stands up. She looks back for Jo, but before she can find her, the stewardess is pushing her toward the exit. Karen slides down the emergency slide and joins the growing group of passengers outside the plane.

Flames start climbing up the sides of the plane. People in the back start to panic as the flames start coming through the back opening. Jo struggles to unbuckle her seat belt. She finally gets it, then starts unbuckling Zoe. One of the buckles on the car seat is jammed. She struggles to get it undone. Zoe's squirming doesn't help much. She finally gets the buckle off and picks up Zoe. She covers her with her jacket and makes her way to the front of the plane. Suddenly the ceiling collapses in front of her and flames fall down in. Jo and the few people behind her are trapped between flames.

"Turn around," Jo demands with a cry.

The small group goes to the back of the plane. They're about 10 feet off the ground.

"Jump!" Jo instructs.

One by one, the few remaining passengers jump down onto the ground. Passengers on the ground help pull them away from the flames. Jo is the last one in the plane. Karen comes to stand in front of the opening.

"Karen, I'm going to throw the baby to you."

"I'm ready!"

Jo makes sure the baby is covered, then gently tosses Zoe to Karen. Karen catches her. Jo hesitates, then jumps out of the plane just as fire falls from the ceiling and engulfs the rest of the plane. Karen helps Jo up. Jo takes Zoe from Karen, nursing her wrist.

"Where's the other half of the plane?" Karen stammers.

"I don't know."

The flight attendants and pilots gather everyone into a group. "Folks, we need to move away from the aircraft and get to a safe location."

"There are still people in there!" A passenger cries out.

"No one is going back in. Please, follow Linda up the hill."

"I can't climb all the way back up," an older passenger says.

"Don't worry, ma'am. We're just going a little ways up so we're a safe distance from the plane."

The group starts walking through the woods away from the plane.

... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...

Everyone is sitting around the kitchen. Eddie and Chimney are drying dishes. Hen, Bobby, and Buck are standing around the island talking to them.

"It's true," Buck says. "Ants never sleep. They also don't have lungs."

Everyone just shakes their heads and laughs.

Suddenly the bell goes off and everyone runs downstairs to grab their gear.

The intercom plays out the call as they get geared up. "All units respond to a plane crash, Angeles National Forest, 2 kilometers north of Monrovia Peak. Commercial aircraft crash landed in the woods. Unknown on injuries."

Everyone hops in the trucks and takes off.

... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...

The 118 arrives at the closest accessible trail head to the crash site. There are more than a dozen other emergency units on scene. The crew gets out of the truck and sees the path of the crash and smoke rising from over the hillside. Bobby goes to command.

"Captain Nash with the 118. What do you know?"

"The flight took off out of Ontario. Shortly after takeoff, the engine malfunctioned and died. They tried turning back around to the airport, but they didn't make it. We know the plane broke in half. One half went over this hill, the other half went over that cliff."

"Have you sent anyone down yet?"

"Not yet."

"My guys will go."

"Alright. Take your equipment up there where my truck is. You're going to have to carry everything you need the rest of the way. We're working on getting more rescue helicopters and possibly a rescue boat, depending on where that plane is. 87 will assist you."

"Yes, sir." Bobby turns back to his crew. They all have worried looks on their faces. "What?"

"What flight is it?" Hen asks, her face white.

The commanding officer hears the question. "We don't know yet." He walks away.

"The girls are fine," Bobby reassures the crew. "They're probably flying over Texas right now."

Everyone nods.

"Grab your gear. It's going to be a long day."

Everyone goes to the trucks to start getting gear and repelling equipment.

Have you ever flown into an airport on the top of a mountain? It is definitely one of the scariest flights I've ever been on. It didn't help that we had just had an ice storm and the runway was icy. If you go over the runway, you're going over a mountain. Anyway, enjoy your next flight! hehe
