Jack rides blue who just bucks him off. Scraping his arm and hitting his head. Jack heads inside to get some ice.
"What did ya do?"
"Nothing"
"Oh no what did you do?"
"Nothing""what did you do?"
"It looks a lot worst than it is"
"Well let me see it"
"No"
"Let me see it"
"No i'm fine"
"Jack are you crazy or are you trying to prove something? What is it?"
"Well i probably am crazy but you already knew that so i guess yeah i do have something to prove
"That you're a young tough cowboy. You have buckles, you have trophies. you don't have to go out there and try and kill yourself"
"It's not about me i swear, it's about Blue. When i saw him over at Stumpys. I knew he was a good horse but nobodys giving him a chance. Stumpy gave up on him but i'm not gonna. When i told Amy that Blue and I were gonna be friends i meant it and i never give up on a friend"
"You see good where no one else does, you always have and that is why i fell in love with you BUT you don't have to be an old fool and seriously hurt yourself. You're just not gonna stop are yah?"
"No, i'll be okay Lisa"
"Well you better be"
Jack goes back out to the round pen to try again. However Blue just keeps bucking him off. This last fall has Jack hitting his heading way too hard and everything going black for him.
Lisa shrugs feeling her heart sink and in this moment looking out the window. Her breathe catches, her eyes welling with tears as she musters all her courage to run outside and into the round pen with her husband who is lying there unconscious. "Jack" she screams out. Gently, she turns him over, pulling his body into her lap as the sobs are dashing through her body. Snapping out of her trance, she reaches for her phone but soon realises she left it in her handbag on the table. She then fumbles with his pockets to see if he has his phone. Her hands run over the object and she pulls it out calling for an ambulance. "Jack please stay with me, you hear me. You can't leave me" she says through her tears.
As the ambulance approaches, sounds blaring Lisa is once again brought back to reality. "I told you to wait for Amy. Why didn't you just listen to me?" She asks hoping he can hear her. She has to step back slightly to let them work on her husband. "We've got a pulse. Lets move him NOW" they shout. She looks from face to face as if silently asking for permission to ride with. They give her a small nod and load him and allowing her to enter.
Lisa takes a seat next to him, tears still streaming down her face. She reaches over and takes his hand in hers. It feels cold but she still brings it to her lips to kiss. She has been in such a hurry trying to get him to safety that she forgot to call the girls. Reaching for Jacks phone again she hits speed dial number 2 "Grandpa?" Amy answers. Lisa chokes at the sound of their granddaughters voice "Amy" she cries into the phone "It's Jack. We're heading to Calgary general" "Lisa? What's wrong? What happened to grandpa?" She asks holding back her own tears. Lisa just said "I'll explain everything later" With that she hung up the phone.
Reaching the hospital they rush Jack through a door. "Jack Bartlett, 70 year old male, bucked off a horse. Lost consciousness" Lisa heard them say as she tried to keep up with them.
"Miss we will take good care of him" A nurse says stopping her from going forward
Lisa now pacing the waiting room. Back and forth. The door flings open and she turns and meets the puffy eyes of both Jacks granddaughters. They run to her and console her. Hugging her "He's gonna be okay Lisa" both whispered yet not sure if any of them believe it. "He loves you" they hear coming from Tim who has just walked through the door. Lou had called him on her way out of the mayors office.
What seems like forever "Family of Jack Bartlett" they hear the doctor say scanning the room. Lisa was frozen in her seat, eyes wide. Tim steps forward, that's us he says gesturing to the ladies. The doctor walks over. "Jack has suffered a lot of blood loss from the fall, because of that he did arrest on the table" All of them crying now and holding each other "We did get him back" They sigh through their tears and relief washed over them all. "Doctor can we see him?" Amy asks without hesitation. He nods "Only 1 at a time"
Lisa turns to the girls "Amy you go first, then you Lou"
"No way Lisa, Grandpa will want you to go in first" She lets out a big sigh and decides to go first. Nothing could have prepared her for this moment, she opens the door and enters the room. Tubes and wires coming from Jacks body and it suddenly hits her that she almost lost him. Trying to be as quiet as she could she rushes over to him, sobbing quietly with her hands wrapped around his. "Jack" she pauses "I love you so much. If you can hear me, the girls are here. We're all here for you honey. Please fight, fight for us, fight for me" that last part she said with a heavy heart. "I'll be back honey but I have to let the girls come and see you" she gently kisses him on the lips before she walks back into the waiting room.
Amy gets up and walks down the hall and into Jacks room "Grandpa? I just wanted to say I love you" she says choking back her tears. "Lisa loves you grandpa, please fight for her. Fight for Lyndy" she lets her tears fall "After Ty, I don't think I can go through that again" She looks at his pale complexion and leaves the room.
Lou looks around and doesn't want to go in. "I don't think I can go in" she admits with her head down. Lisa's and Amy's eyes snapped up to look at her "I can't see him like that" she says as she finally allows herself to break down. Sobs are wracking her body. Lisa holds a hand up to Tim as if to say 'I got this' She gets up and walks over to gently pull Lou into a tight embrace "Lou, honey your grandpa loves you" she says wiping away her tears. "I know" she says as she feels stupid about what's keeping her out here. She stands, straightens her pants and walks into Jacks room. She stood there silent. Not moving any closer, not talking. Just hoping.
Hours later, Lisa walks back into the room after allowing everyone else to see Jack. She takes a seat right on the edge of the bed. "Jack, You see good where no one else does, you always have and that is why I fell in love with you BUT you don't have to be an old fool and seriously hurt yourself" she remembers the conversation they had right before her world turned upside down. She gently strokes his arm. Willing him to feel her presence, to feel her touch. To know she was here and wasn't going anywhere. "I need our talks. I need your hugs, I need to feel you beside me at night" she whispers softly to him. His hand slightly moves and intertwines with hers. She feels the movement and looks up to find grey eyes blinking back at her "I need that too" he says with a hoarse voice "I'm sorry Lis, I never give up on a friend" She smiles knowing that he's here. That he's fine. Still too stubborn and she knows all too well that he's gonna keep working with Blue
