Prologue 2: Welcome to Brockton Bay
I was standing on the roof of one of the buildings near the school. Getting up here wasn't too hard, but I still felt like shit after using my power so much with little to no breaks tonight. From here I could easily observe whatever was going to happen. The first to arrive...
'Is this Velocity? What the hell is he doing here?'
The red blur stopped in front of the main entrance of the school for a few seconds, then rushed inside, disappearing from my view. A few minutes later two vans arrived, one white and one black.
'The white one must be the ambulance, and the black one must be the PRT. Sure, I said I was a Cape, but did they really have to send in a Hero and a van full of troopers? Don't they have anything better to do? I'm sure there is always something better to do in this shithole of a city.'
The troopers rushed in first, the medics following them inside a minute later.
'Hmmm, checking for traps, or maybe for an ambush? Just how paranoid can they be?'
Nothing else happened for another three minutes or so, then Velocity rushed out of the building in some random direction.
'Going back to patrol?'
He came back to the front doors again a few minutes later, stopped for five seconds, and ran away in a random direction once more.
'Oh, he must've been combing the area, looking for me. Hope he's gone for good this time. I really don't want to interact with any Capes right now.'
A minute later the medics rushed out of the building, along with that rolling bed thingy that probably had Taylor strapped to it. Then the PRTroopers - "Heh" - strolled out. Two of them stayed near the entrance, one got inside the ambulance with Taylor and the medics, and the others went back to the black van. The ambulance left first, PRT's car following right behind it. I decided not to even try to go after them. I was really tired, and it could be a trap. BB has only three hospitals anyway, it wouldn't be too hard to find Taylor if I wanted to. Knowing her family's financial situation she would probably end up in BB Central Hospital.
"Damn, I really didn't expect that. PRT arriving here? Sure, I said that I'm a Cape after all. But Velocity? Was it because they wanted to make a good first impression? Ask me to join? Or was it because they were suspicious of me? Did they think I was stealing some info from the school, like the personal data of the students? Ugh, whatever, I'll have to deal with that later, or not at all. If I will keep quiet for a month then maybe they will think the call came from a civilian instead."
Well, now that this issue is dealt with, finding a place to sleep became my priority number one.
'Hmm, Winslow is in the South Docks area, if I remember it correctly. Going to Captain's Hill Memorial, or at least to where it will be one day, would probably be one of the safest options. I believe there was a small park there? It should be pretty close too. Even if there isn't one, It should be fine and safe. Or I could look for one of those empty storage containers or abandoned buildings scattered throughout the Docks area, closer to the water. Definitely not as safe, but it could be a more reliable option for the near future. Going to the Commercial District or to the Downtown area at night is definitely a big NO. I have no money, there is almost nowhere to hide for the night for free there, it's further away from Winslow than both other options, and I am at least four times as likely to encounter a Cape or a cop there. Going to the Boat Graveyard was also an option, probably as good as going to Captain's Hill, but I would have to go through the Merchants' territory to reach it.'
In the end, I decided that picking the safest option would be better. I had little to no energy left to fight back, didn't have any weapons either, and I had no skill at using my power in a fight anyway. The extra risk wasn't something I was willing to take at the moment. It was going to take a while to get there...
*About an hour later*
I arrived sooner then I thought I would, which was a welcome surprise. Finding my way in an unfamiliar city by using bus station maps was very annoying. And I was right, there was a small park area there! The streets were mostly empty and quiet, and I found it a bit creepy. I was used to living in bigger and safer cities, where the only thing that changed at night was the sky above. More importantly, Lady Luck smiled upon me on my way here. Why, you may ask? Because I found a wallet at one of the bus stations! I didn't bother looking for a way to identify the owner, all I was interested in was if it had any money inside. It wasn't much, but now I had forty-three dollars in my pocket, which means that I'm not going to starve tomorrow. I left the wallet where I found it.
'This can barely be called a park.'
The Captain's Hill not-yet-a-Memorial was a bit disappointing, but at least there were benches and almost nobody ever came here, especially at night.
'I certainly wouldn't come here if I was a local.'
"Welcome to Brockton Bay, huh? Sleeping in a park, like a bum." - I murmured to myself.
With a tired sigh, I picked a random bench and lied down on it. Before I lost my consciousness I used my power to pull on the soul of the bench with a desire for warmth and comfort. Then everything went black...
Author's note: A bit shorter than the previous one. That's probably because I'm lazy. Maybe if I finish writing the prologue I could just combine all the parts into one chapter? Nah.
