Prologue 5: Know Your Enemy
I was walking down the street, munching on the cheap cheeseburger that I would never, ever spend my money on again.
"I hope I won't throw up later."
'I hope you do. This thing... I think it's poisonous.'
'Hey, do you think I can make it taste better with my powers?'
'Eh, it wouldn't hurt to try'
A few soul pulls later the taste of the burger changed. It was still way worse than what I was used to, but it was an improvement. I finished the burger as fast as I could and drank the rest of my coke to get rid of the aftertaste.
'So, we need to gather and sort through as much information as possible today. What do you suggest we do first?"
'I can understand how gathering information would help us, but do we really need to spend all day on that?'
'Do not be mistaken. This whole city is our enemy. E88, ABB, Merchants, even the PRT, and Coil, especially Coil. We need to gather as much information and resources as soon as possible if we are indeed stuck here.'
'Then we need to get ourselves a map of the city first. We also need to get a pen and a notebook, or a pad. We can probably get all this in one of the shops or stands nearby.'
I knew that you could always buy a map from a gas station store, and I vaguely remembered passing by a gas station tonight when I was heading for the park. After about half an hour of wandering around, I finally found that gas station. I got everything I wanted there, which was great, but now I had only twenty dollars in my pocket. A few minutes later I was back in the park near the Captain's Hill. It was time to start thinking about what we should do.
"Okay, first, let's mark the gang territories on the map"
E88 territory was the first and the easiest one to do. They pretty much owned a larger and more financially successful half of the city. The Coast, most of the Downtown area, as well as the Commercial District and a small part of the South Docks near Captain's Hill not-yet-a-Memorial, it all belonged to them. Then there were the Merchants, the least important gang in the city. They had the Trainyard and the Boat Graveyard, as well as a small part of the Docks nearby those two areas. Basically, they were on the opposite side of the city from the E88. If ABB, PRT and Coil's territories didn't stand in Empire's way then Merchants probably would've been history a long time ago. Next was the PRT territory. They had the smallest one, which told you exactly just how bad the situation in Brockton Bay was. All they had was the Oil Rig base and a small area of the Docks where the Broadwalk was, right between two ferry stations, and a small part of the Downtown area, near Lord's Street. Then there was the ABB. All the territory that I left unmarked so far, about 80% of the Docks area, belonged to them. And the last one was Coil and his organisation. I didn't know much about his territory, but I knew that it was almost on the edge of E88 territory in Downtown, near the Docks, close to the border between E88, ABB and PRT territories. It was a sweet spot in many ways. He didn't have to fight for it that much, other gangs did it for him without even knowing it, and he could observe all three other actually important players from there.
'What about Faultline's Crew, New Wave and Undersiders?'
"Faultline and her people don't really have a territory, all they have is one building, and they work only outside of the city. We will probably have to contact them soon, but they are not that important for now. Undersiders are just thieves that work for Coil right now, they don't have a territory and don't have the power to hold it. New Wave is barely functioning at this point. They don't really have a territory anymore. The only one still patrolling is Glory Girl, and she probably sticks close either to Gallant, or to the better parts of the city, like the Downtown area and the Broadwalk. Maybe I will mark them all down on the map later when I get a burner phone with an internet connection, cause I will need some up to date info for that."
'Hmm, alright, so what happens now?'
"Now let's plan for what we're going to do tonight. When we are done, let's go for a walk around the city."
'Okay, priority number one for tonight: we need to get us some cash. It will help us with a lot of things later on. '
"We could spend all night hunting down criminals and taking their money, I think I can handle a few thugs now that I have my Fullbring and a bit of training with high-speed movement. I don't think this will be enough though. We need as much money as we can get in one go, and fast, so we will probably have to break the law to get it."
'Robbing a shop at night is probably not an option we should consider. I doubt anyone leaves any money inside a shop for the night in this city. That would be a very dumb move.'
"I don't know how exactly basic Fullbringer powers will interact with electronics and computers, but getting our money from an ATM would probably be our best bet."
'Alright, I think we're done here for now.'
"Yep! Now, let's go tour the city!"
Author's note:
And another one is done! I really want to finish the prologue as soon as possible, so there will probably be a bigger timeskip between this chapter and the next.
