Unfamiliar Land : Chapter 1

Falling was the first sensation the girl felt before bone-chilling cold surged through her body.

It was cold, dark, she didn't know where she was, all she knew was after she fell, someone pulled her up.

Without knowing that she almost drown, she coughed up some water that lodge in her throat. Her rescuer patted her back firmly to help and handed her a towel. She was soaking wet.

"My… what- where- how on earth that a young girl like you fell from the sky?!"

Silver grey eyes which were hereditary from her family, looked up to her rescuer and reveal a man, a little on the short plump side, but his eyes were kind and worried. He wears a purple kind of hat with white pom-pom on the top. He also wears a familiar white coat, the ones that were usually wore by-

She winced. Her head hurts. Better to stop thinking about it and start answering questions since her rescuer was looking even more concern than before.

"Are-Are you alright dear? Are you still cold? I can get you another towel." He stood up to fetch it, but she was unfamiliar with her surroundings and was almost drown. She doesn't want to be alone.

She instinctively grabbed unto one of his sleeves preventing him from moving farther, "I-It's alright.. I'm okay.."

He looks hesitant, but willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. He kneels down to be more on her eye level, scrutinizing her trying to look for other injuries. When he didn't find one he sighed in pure relief and let out a small smile.

"Well you're certainly a surprise. You know, if it wasn't for these three running straight here, you might have been drown by now since I wasn't intending to go to Prelude Beach today."

These three? What is he-

When she looked down, her silver grey eyes widened in surprise to see three small..

"What- What are they?.." she asked, more to curious than hesitant.

Her rescuer was surprised, "You don't know? Well, these three are what we call 'Pokemon'."

Another jab of pain. But this one was quick to go away so her slight wince went unnoticed. ..At least by her rescuer. The three 'Pokemons' were looking at her rather curiously.

Seeing that she still didn't understand he elaborates, "Pokemon or Pocket Monster are mysterious terrifying creatures that live outside human boundaries. They are usually found in the wild terrains and are very dangerous creatures. If you're not careful, you can get hurt very badly. My.. even Rei was knock out by one of Shinx Thunder attacks.. But I'm rambling, the point is there's a lot we don't know about this creatures and that's where my job comes in. I'm a Professor that studies Pokemon. My name is Laventon."

There was a beat of silence before she realized the Professor was asking for her name, she quickly scrambles up to answer, "Oh, uh- My name is Sylvern. N-Nice to meet you, uh-Sir."

Professor Laventon smiled assuringly, "It's nice to meet you as well, Sylvern. Although.. it is quite mysterious and interesting with how you ended up falling into the sea.. You see, you had fallen from that space-rift up there."

Sylvern looked at where the Professor pointed and her eyes widened more. That black hole was a space-rift and she fell from there? Well.. that was.. unusual..

She blinked once, twice, when she didn't offer anything more, Professor Laventon asked what bothers him from the start, "Didn't you know that you fell from that?" Sylvern shook her head.

"Well.. it will be quite difficult to explain to the Captain why a child like you suddenly appears, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there. Now, if you three will just go back to the village.."

All three of the Pokemon looked on mischievously before darted from their spot and run off to hide at the field nearby.

"Ahhh! No, Come back!" Professor Laventon sighed, "Those three don't have their Pokeballs yet.. It makes this so much difficult to round them all back to the village, and I have to admit I'm afraid to touch them.. and my aim is worse. How about… What if you give it a try?" he looked at the young girl.

"Me?" Sylvern asked back.

Professor Laventon nodded, "You look so young, but I bet your aim can't be worse than mine. Why don't you give it a try? Who knows, maybe you're a natural about this."

"Okay.." Sylvern agreed. It's not like she can do anything else about it, and this man had saved her life. It's the least she can do.

"Alright, here's what you need to do," he handed her some Pokeballs which was red with wooden bottom and metal latch in the middle, "You need to get close enough before you throw them and let the balls do the rest. You'll see what I mean when you catch them, ready?"

Sylvern was curious and excitedly smiled, "Yeah!"

Professor Laventon returned the smile, "Best of luck then Sylvern."

Professor Laventon had explained briefly that the ball of feather fluff was call a Rowlet, the blue and white thing with shell in the middle and tail was call an Oshawott, and the last one with a snout and fire bursting from it's back was call a Cyndaquil. Her job was to try and get the three of them into the Pokeballs.

Sylvern went to the ball of fluff first where he was flying around. She took aim and the forgotten baseball muscle in her arm do the throwing.

It hit right at the back of it's head. Rowlet was so startled he didn't have time to react. His ball only struggles once before a small smoke went up to the air like a mini firework from the top middle of the ball.

When Rowlet didn't come back out again, she assumed she already did it and went next to Oshawott. Oshawott realized Sylvern was at the back of the bushes a second too late before the ball hit him. He struggles thrice before the ball went still. Two down one to go.

Cyndaquil proved to be the hardest of the three when he managed to come back out again after the ball hit him. It startles Sylvern so much that Professor Laventon quickly explained that this thing sometimes happened when the Pokemon was strong or alert enough of the ball that when it hit them, it can get out again. He told her not to give up and try again, and this time, Cyndaquil stays in his ball.

"It looks like you are a natural for this kind of thing, Sylvern. Even though you are a young child, I can say that you do this better than I ever did." The Professor grinned happily at her and she returns it.

After that Professor Laventon led her to Jubilife Village since she doesn't have anywhere else to go, and with her almost amnesiac state, the Professor took pity of her and introduced her to his home.

It did not go well.

Everywhere she goes, everyone starts to whisper suspicions about her and if they assumed she didn't hear any of it they were wrong.

But the hardest words came from 'Beni' the Wallflower's owner who claimed that he didn't serve outsiders outside the Jubilife Village and Galaxy Team occupants, even though Professor Laventon asked her to stay there for now.

Luckily, the professor was quick to come back to helped her out of her predicament. Unfortunately for her, his team Captain, Cyllene was her name, said that she was too young to be any kind of help for the village or for the team.

"Everyone here has to earn their keep to stay. You are around 5 or 6 if I'm not wrong? And she's a stranger who fell out of the sky, so no parents or guardians to support her either. And Professor, you are in no way to support her or any child with the amount of work you keep around the clock, and no one here would want to adopt or be a guardian to a small young child who fell out of the sky, you know how much the villagers wary of outsiders."

"I just turned 7." Sylvern protests to Cyllene, that much she could remember. But it fell on deaf ears when in fact, she really is a small child even for her age.

Laventon hates to say this, but if he wanted to help the child to at least survive the night he has to keep on his case, "You are right, Captain. But let me tell you, she has a gift with Pokemon. Why, just earlier the three Pokemon I have for my research went out of the village just to see her, and she managed to caught them all with the Pokeballs. Besides, she's too young to survive alone in the wild, even adults have difficulties. Please Captain, just give her a chance, she can help with my research I can assure you that."

Cyllene looked back to the small child while considering the Professor's words. It's true that they have difficulties with their research since most members are afraid of Pokemon and their wild natures.. Even if this child, Sylvern, has a gift with Pokemon, it hardly can be an assurance of the research to went well since they haven't take account of the harsh weather and terrains out there. Really, it was just like waiting for a disaster to happen. Yet…

The girl's wide silver grey eyes look almost pleading to her, and no matter how hard she tried, Cyllene just can't get her conscience to agree with the harsh decision she made.

Cyllene sighed.

"Fine. You can stay in that house over there," she pointed to the one near the Galaxy Hall, "and tomorrow morning I will give you a test to determine if you can stay or not. Have a rest tonight and don't be late. I will see you at 5 a.m." as briskly as that, Cyllene left the child in the temporary care of the Professor, just to get away from seeing the fear that settles in her young eyes that she was sure would be there if she turns around. Instead, Cyllene kept walking back to the Galaxy Hall. She has works to do.

Professor Laventon sighed before letting out a small assuring smile to the child which didn't help any to lessen the fear in her silver grey eyes. First things first though, she was still freezing from the earlier fall to the sea, her clothes: white collared shirt, black vest, black wide-end trousers, and black shoes were still soaked. The cool air helps to dry them, but if she stays in her damp clothes she would soon to be sick before she could take any of the Captain's trial test.

"I can borrow some of the small children clothes from the villagers to replace yours for now, then we can eat dinner at Wallflower and you can have a good night rest, how's that sound?" he asked with warm assuring smile that Sylvern returned with nervousness.

When she changed her clothes, Sylvern noticed an item that she had no idea that she actually has it all along with her. The professor called it an 'Arc Phone' which well.. written on the screen. Sylvern has no idea what she needs to do with the item, but Professor Laventon told her to keep it with her for now since it's probably part of her gift with Pokemon when they saw it already registered the three Pokemon from earlier as 'seen'.

True to his words, Professor Laventon gave her change of clothes, some dinner, and bid her a good night sleep before leaving her alone.

Sylvern hates the silence that came with it, but she can't do anything about it.

After the day the small child had, the deity can't fault her from letting out silent frustration tears that soaked her pillow for the night.

'The Almighty Sinnoh' felt guilty, but for greater reasons this has to happen. And for all it's worth, this is only the beginning of the small child many trials and hardships.

At the same time, at another place, up in the cold place same silver grey eyes that were hereditary to his family widened when some forgotten memories started to flow back to his mind.

".. Younger sister.. sister.. I-I have a niece.."
