Entry Trial : Chapter 2

Sleep didn't come easy for Sylvern and when the morning came, the small child barely had a good night sleep at all.

'Knock, knock', "Hey, are you awake? The Captain wants to see you in her office for your trial."

Sylvern got up rigidly at that. That was not Professor Laventon's voice.

The small child quickly got up and get dressed to her original clothes since the night air had dried them off completely. It didn't mean that much, but her clothing especially her black buttoned-vest brings her so much comfort. The kind of comfort she doesn't think she'll get anytime soon from anyone or anything else.

After making sure her dark black blue hair which has natural silver grey shine and linings from her family hereditary was at least presentable, Sylvern went out and saw a 15 year old boy waiting outside, a little impatient and suspicious when seeing her.

"Finally. The Captain is waiting, better get going. Gee, you really are a stranger from the sky, aren't you? From the way you dressed and those clothings.. they're so different. And the Professor told me you didn't even know about Pokemon before, so does that mean you don't have them from where you came from?"

For a boy who looks suspicious and wary, he was sure mildly interested and comments a lot about her. Not that it bothers her so much, at least he's not quiet. It fills the silence void from the night before and Sylvern has to admit she welcomes it.

Turns out Captain Cyllene's office was in Galaxy Hall, and the Galaxy Hall itself was beside her lent quarters. Huh, a short walk was sure preferable when whispers from yesterday were still around with added snickers from the children villagers.

Sylvern was never good with socializing with other children, she remembers that much. But she never felt so alone for as long as she can remember, which- well, not much apparently.

She rubbed the side of her head gingerly. This amnesia she has was proving to be a big hindrance so far. But even so.. she can't help but to think if she doesn't forget any of her memories, would she able to continue her days without crying for the return of everything she knew of?

That was not her present problem though..

Inside the building was huge, and apparently Captain Cyllene's office was straight in the middle on the 1st floor. Very convenience.

"You are finally here." Captain Cyllene said before she stood up from her desk to stand in front of the small child. When she saw Sylvern gulped in nervous anticipation, Cyllene continued as to not give time for fear to settle in her silver grey eyes. She wouldn't- couldn't see her in the eye if then, "Your entry trial to become the Galaxy Survey Corps Member is to catch three following Pokemon: Bidoof, Starly, and Shinx. This wouldn't be a problem to you if the Professor's claim of your gift with Pokemon is to be believe, and you have caught three Pokemon as well yesterday. I believe this would be a suitable test for you."

Sylvern can only nodded. Those three Pokemon names mean nothing to her. She doesn't even know what they look like, let alone how to catch them later.

Cyllene thought for a moment before saying, "You can borrow this satchel for the items you are going to carry later." She tied a small satchel to the girl's waist, "Try to come back here safely. Rei here will guide you on your trial."

Rei reluctantly agreed since it was an order, but he was sure curious to see what the small child can do to received such high praises from the Professor.

Sylvern felt weird having the satchel tied around her middle, but it's not uncomfortable so she won't let it hinders her for now.

Outside Captain Cyllene's office, Professor Laventon was waiting with yesterday's three Pokemon. He smiled at the young child who can't help but to return it, "There you are, Sylvern. I see you are ready to go. Since you don't have any Pokemon of your own yet, why don't you pick one of these three? It will help you with your entry trial and by your side, you can help me observe them more closely."

Sylvern agreed. So she crouched down to see the three Pokemon more closely.

It was somewhat easy if she can look at them more closely, she can see that Cyndaquil seems to have a tiny grudge with her for catching him in that Pokeball involuntarily, while Oshawott looks between curious and uninterested. Rowlet seems to be the right choice when he was the only one who seems calm enough for her to set her hand on his fluff feathers.

It was so fluffy. Sylvern unconsciously let out a big smile and a laugh when she petted it. That seems to cheer Rowlet up whom look pleased and curious at her while Professor Laventon took that as a good sign and decide it for her, "Well, I can say that Rowlet will be a good friend for you if he can make you smile like that." He smiled warmly at the child who's still smiling at the fluffiness, "So Rowlet it is?"

"Yes!" Sylvern laughed again when Rowlet jumped into her hug, "Thank you Professor Laventon."

"You are very welcome my dear." He smiled softly. By then, Cyndaquil and Oshawott look somewhat jealous at the attention Rowlet was getting from the child when it was the three of them who found her yesterday. At the rare occasion like this, Professor Laventon noticed it and crouched down to whispered at them, "Don't worry. If all goes well, I'm sure Sylvern would love to be your friend as well." And that settles the two remaining Pokemon for now.

"Alright Kid, ready to go?" Rei asked Sylvern who was holding Rowlet to her chest. The round body of Rowlet easily cover the child's torso completely making her part of the fluffy feathers.

"Uh-huh, I think I'm ready. And I'm looking forward for your..guide Rei." Sylvern smiled, still feeling comfortable from holding Rowlet close to her which he didn't mind at all.

At that Rei gave a small smile, "Sure thing Kid. Let's go then."

"My name is Sylvern."

"..Alright, Sylvern it is."

When they walked to the front gate the whispers didn't stop, but this time Rowlet acted as a buffer so Sylvern didn't really pay attention to them. At the front gate though… a blond man with his bangs to the left with white, blue, yellow clothing, and a really big bagpack on his back was waiting for them.

"Ah.. is this the famous child that had fallen from the sky?" the man asked with a pleasant smile.

"More like 'infamous'.." Rei muttered to himself. He had heard the whispers around which was normal when the villagers saw an outsider, but exaggerated rumours started to spread around and it was ridiculous. So far, the child hasn't done anything and rumours already said that she's going to bring bad luck to them. Even Rei frowned upon those words with a clear disdain.

Though, Sylvern has to reluctantly agree when she caught Rei's whispered words. She truly is more 'infamous' than famous now.

"Sylvern.. is quite well known for that," Professor Laventon reluctantly agreed, "It's a surprise to see you already back to the village, Volo. What brings you here so early from your usual schedule?"

"Well it's because I got a wind about our little girl here, and I decided to see her by myself, which remind me, they said she got a gift with Pokemon? Would you mind to give me a Pokemon battle then? I'm Volo, the Ginkgo Guild Merchant Member by the way, at your service if you want to buy some items." Volo said pleasantly.

Sylvern was confused though, "A battle?"

"Yes, each one of us will send out a Pokemon each and use some moves until one of them is faint, then the other wins the battle. How's that sound?" Volo explained.

That sounds usual.. Sylvern neither like nor dislike the description, but Pokemon battle sure sounds familiar…

"- I like winning more than anything else!"

"So.. you like me, mommy, and - less?..." she asked sadly to the white clothed man with the same silver grey eyes like hers. He looks blurry.. and the last name as well, but she remembers them as comfort, that can't be bad right?

"Oh Sylvern.. family means more than anything to me. You know I love you right? and your mommy, and - as well. All passengers accounted for." The silver grey eyes man kneel down on one knee to be more on her eye level. Even then he was still tall enough. She was a small kid, but they never made her feel any less though, they made her feel comfort.

"More than winning?" she had asked innocently, perking up. The man had picked her up and held her close. She likes being held, it made her feels safe. This man is one of the 'safe' place.

"More than the tracks itself, kiddo.. and you especially, are one special kid. I won't let you go that easily. - as well." He assured her. The younger her grinned,

"And I love you more longer than the tracks -." His name escaped her. Why?

"Then I love you more than the longest tracks." He grinned, teasing her but meant every word he said. She was thinking for an answer, but the white clothe man said, "I think that's our stop Kiddo, or else - will get jealous." He sent a teasing glance to another man. One with similar silver grey eyes like theirs, but his face was also blurry. Who?

"I am not jealous." The second man answered.

"Sure you are. She loves me more longer than the tracks itself." The white clothe man boasted.

But before the second man answered, a woman came in. She has similar physical traits with the two men but younger and same silver grey eyes. She picked her up from the white clothe man's arms and said, "Obviously Mommy wins first place. Because she's the fastest to wins her heart." She smiled victoriously to the two men.

"How are you the fastest?" The white clothe man challenged.

"Because Mommy loves her the moment she knew she has her in her womb." The woman grinned, her long silver grey hair flowing flawlessly behind her.

"..I think we all tied on that one." The second man said.

"A definite line." The white clothe man agreed.

"-vern. Sylvern!"

Sylvern's thoughts snapped to the present, her stray memory came to a halt. Professor Laventon, Volo, and Rei were looking at her worriedly, even Rowlet look up to her with concern tilt of his head. When they realized she was back with them, Rei explodes,

"You can't just space out like that! What if you were outside the village and the Pokemon attacks you huh? Even my guides won't save you Sylvern!" Rei scolds her. He knew full well how dangerous the outside world is. He just got attacked after all and he barely got out. Even if he didn't like her he wouldn't want anything bad happen to her, she's still so young.

Sylvern lowered her head, "I- sorry.." She really didn't mean to. That memory was sudden, and even then it was blurry for most. It was a precious memory she can tell, but she can barely recall it.

Rei calmed down but refused to say anything else to her. It's not everyday you see him outburst like that. Professor Laventon can only stood awkwardly since he agrees with Rei but didn't know exactly what happened to the girl at the time. Volo was the one who managed to melt the silence with another offer for a battle. Sylvern agreed just to escape the awkward silence.

Volo let out a Togepi while her Rowlet fly down from her hold. He looks determined when he look back at her and nodded.

Alright, let's see what she and Rowlet can do together.

Rei couldn't believe his eyes. The small child managed to beat Volo in Pokemon battle. Rowlet didn't leave unscathed but they still win.

What a teamwork. Huh, maybe she really do has a chance to get her entry trial done. With Rei's guide, he'll make sure she passes it for sure.

Volo congratulates her on her win by giving her 5 potions for her Pokemon and healed both of their Pokemon. With the potions he gave her, she now has that and some pokeballs from the Professor in her lent satchel to complete her trial test.

Professor Laventon told her to always tell Ress the Guardsman of her destination, so if anything bad happens to her in the wild, someone can go and look for her. What a comforting thought.

..No, it really does. At least then someone knew where she is, even if it's not exact.

The three of them, Professor Laventon, Rei, and Sylvern travelled to Obsidian Fieldlands where she can find the three Pokemon of her trial.

"Rei here will give you some important tips of the Survey Corps, so pay attention and listen closely okay?" Professor Laventon said which Sylvern nodded in understanding.

Rei and Sylvern walked a little farther from the Fieldlands base camp to search for Bidoof, and Sylvern was immediately in love with the landscape and was excited to explore. Even with her natural fear, Sylvern was first and foremost a curious young child.

"Alright, do you see the brown Pokemon with thick flat tail and buck teeth? That's a Bidoof." Rei pointed to the Pokemon with the exact description. That's her first trial Pokemon.

"Bidoof was quite tame, so as long as you are careful and didn't provoke them they won't bother you. Go on, give it a try."

With Rei's urging, Sylvern hides behind a rock before taking aim and threw the first pokeball. Bidoof didn't react much and was immediately caught.

One down two to go.

Rei's jaw was agape. Sylvern made it looks so easy when it was certainly not.

"How did you do that?" he asked in pure wonder when Sylvern went to retrieve the pokeball.

Sylvern thought for a second searching for a memory that should've been there, but when she couldn't find it she settles on saying, "I think I practice throwing a small ball like this a lot so my muscle remembers."

Rei was confused but Sylvern can't explain it more specific than that. Her vocabulary and memory are limited.

Shooking himself back to his serious state, Rei went on walking before pointed to a grey and white Pokemon with curl top feather and a pointy beak.

"That is Starly. It's your second Pokemon on the list. To approach timid Pokemon like Starly, you have to be very quiet and sneak behind the tall grass. For me, I have to bend to hide but you're short enough so you can just stand and walk slowly and quietly behind it to close in on them. Be careful not to go too close or you'll spook them away."

Sylvern nodded at the helpful tip and decide to ignore his teasing jab about her height. She had a feeling she was used to it.

Creeping closer to the big patch of tall grass, Sylvern walked slowly to sneak behind a Starly and threw the ball.

One shot. Two down one to go.

And Rei was even more in awe. She's an interesting kid, that's for sure.

"Next is.. Shinx?" Sylvern asked, unsure.

Rei shook out from his stupor and nodded, "Shinx is an aggressive Pokemon. They will attack you if you get to close to them, and sneaking behind them doesn't guarantee you to catch them. So the only other option is to fight them."

"Like.. pokemon battle?"

Rei nodded, "The differences are, they are wild Pokemon. If you lose, not only no one will heal your Pokemon, the wild Pokemon themselves will turn to attack you. So if the situation looks bad, I suggest you either run away and hide or try to faint the wild Pokemon. That will give you the opening you need."

Sylvern solemnly nodded. She remembered what Rei said earlier and what Professor Laventon said about Rei got attacked by a Shinx. This is serious business and very dangerous.

But even then, Sylvern is a curious child.

After Rei had pointed the blue, black, and yellow tail Pokemon which he had identified as Shinx near a bridge, Sylvern crept closer trying to catch it by surprise. But alas, it noticed her.

"Hi there." She greeted nervously. The Shinx let out an angry cry, "Okay.. pleasantries is out of the way then." She let out Rowlet who gave his own protective cry.

After a few blows here and there with leaf attack which Sylvern barely knew what it was called, and a few thunder attacks from Shinx, Sylvern managed to caught the Shinx in the pokeball.

But then..

A roar like cry was heard and few thunders were crackled and rumbled in the darken sky. Sylvern had heard Rei was calling for her to get away or something, but Sylvern can't move.

Because in front of her was a full-grown adult Luxray who has his eyes staring right into her silver grey ones.

The Luxray was easily much taller and bigger than Sylvern whom by normal standards was consider small. But even with the size difference, all Sylvern felt was familiarity and curiosity.

So she smiled.

"Hi! I'm Sylvern. Nice to meet you."

The Luxray, who was used to seeing people running in fear from him can only stare incredulously. Rei's reaction was not far from him.

A cub with curiosity like her would've died easily in the wild if they're not careful was Luxray's first thought, and yet…

He sniffed the girl's face who laughed slightly at the warm puff air he produced which tickled her face.

Rei still can't believe his eyes.

Luxray didn't pay attention to the other human. The small cub in front of him on the other hand, has some distinct scent of another Luxray lingering around her. It was faint, but it was clearly there. An adult caretaker Luxray scent.

Interesting.

The other Luxray was clearly a companion of some sort for the cub and he had caught a protective scent around her too, humans and a Luxray.

Luxray was confused at his findings, but one thing was very clear,

This young human was a reckless, curious cub that has a faint borderline between smart and stupid.. No wonder the other Luxray scent clings protectively around her. If it wasn't there to warn others, she would've died by now.

Curious and wondering about the young child he knew was a cub, Luxray made a decision. The sky clears up again and the thunders stop before he slowly pawed on the pokeball in her hand.

Sylvern looked on his paw for a moment of confusion before she brightened up, "You want to come with me? You can help Professor on his research work too like me, if I pass the entry trial that is… but you wanna come?"

With a small nod from the Luxray, Sylvern took out a spare pokeball and gently threw it to Luxray. The ball barely struggles before it let out a steam of mini firework.

Rei's jaw was still agape, and he still didn't believe what he saw.

Sylvern finally noticed him looking and smiled brightly. Rei can only slowly shook out of his recent stupor and nodded, "Let's- Let's go back to the Professor."

Sylvern grinned and said with one finger pointing to the front, "Then let's go! Full steam ahead!"

A moment of jolt caught the Pearl Warden unaware for a moment. He was sure she was fine.. her mother- his Ayla won't let anything happen to her only daughter.

"Snea?"

Ingo shook his head, "Nothing to worry about, Sneasler. Now, all aboard to our next stop!"
