A week had passed since the interns started. It had also been a week since Carina had started experiencing strange things. Ray had been paying special attention to her recently and she was starting to feel uneasy about it.
"Another note." Carina grumbled as she pulled the piece of paper from her locker and crumbled it up in her hand. This had been happening every day for the past week. Notes, cups of coffee that seemed innocent at first glance. He seemed to be just trying to get on good terms with her. He was quickly becoming a headache. Pulling her cell phone from her pocket, she rolled her eyes.
Another note in my locker. xoxo. She added an emoticon of rolling eyes before hitting send. She made a habit of telling Maya whenever something like this happened. It was important to her that Maya understood that she was not keeping secrets from her. The last thing she needed was for her relationship to be put at risk by some intern she didn't even know. After shoving her phone back into her pocket, she tossed the note into the trash can before leaving. The day started with a page to the emergency room; a multiple accident crash had overwhelmed everyone. Carina had been paged when it was revealed that one of the drivers was pregnant. These kinds of cases were the most difficult because minutes could mean the difference between life and death for both mother and child. There was usually chaos as everyone hustled around and that sometimes left O.B. behind.
"We need to get her to the O.R.!" Carina all but shouted. "The baby's oxygen is decreasing." She said as her eyes scanned the screen next to the bed.
"We need to wait for neuro to evaluate and perform a CT scan." Miranda said. As her eyes scanned the room, Carina shook her head violently.
"I am not putting their lives at risk by waiting for neuro. I will not be the one to tell this mother that her baby died because we waited too long to act." Carina snapped. Some time later, after walking out of the O.R., she let out a sigh. Thankfully, everything went well. Both mom and baby were stable, allowing her to breathe a little easier. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed him watching her. Like he always did. He seemed to be everywhere she went. Maybe it was merely a coincidence. Or maybe she was going crazy. All she knew was that he made her uncomfortable. His presence made her nervous. Looking down at her watch, she realized it was getting to be lunch time. Having checked on the rest of her patients, she proceeded to head to the crowded cafeteria where she found a long line of people waiting to eat.
"Dr. DeLuca, there's room at our table if you're looking for a place to eat." Ray smiled as he walked up behind her. Carina shook her head before scooping some food onto her tray.
"I'm eating in the lounge, but thank you." Carina smiled, hoping that he would leave. With no such luck. Having been tucked safely inside the attendings lounge, she began eating her meal, unaware that there was anyone else in the room.
"Well, you entered the room like a bat out of hell." Someone laughed. "Who's chasing you?" The woman looked up to see Meredith raising her eyebrows.
"Only the new intern who seems to believe that flirting with the boss is totally normal and not at all inappropriate." Carina muttered as she took another bite of her meal.
"Take it from me. I was an intern banging an attending once. It's a messy and chaotic situation." Meridith chuckled. "By the way, are you married? I thought you were with what's her name over at Station Nineteen."
Carina rolled her eyes. "Yeah, I'm married to Maya, which is why I don't want to get involved in any of Ray's games." She paused for a moment. "So how did you handle it? Being an intern sleeping with her boss."
"Uh, well..." Meredith laughed a little nervously. "I married him. When he met me, he was already married and the whole situation was a mess for a while after that. It ended up working out for me in the end, though. It's almost the same thing as you and I. You're married and he's the intern trying to get into your pants or whatever he's doing."
"It's not that he's trying to get into my pants, Meredith." Carina laughed. "I think he's just trying to be nice, but he's crossing some very thin lines in the process."
"Well, whatever you decide to do, don't throw away your marriage if you're actually happy in it. In spite of the fact that Derek wasn't happy with Addison, she still didn't deserve what he had done to her. Of course I felt bad about what had happened. But I also couldn't be more happy that he chose me in the end." Meredith explained. "What I'm trying to say is that it's more important for you to figure out what's going on before everything you care about is at risk." Carina knew that Meredith was right. There was no way she could let this destroy what she had worked so hard for. What she would do anything to protect. After she had finished eating lunch, she dumped the tray before leaving the lounge.
"Dr. DeLuca!" She saw someone walking toward her. "I've been trying to find you. I'm on your service." The person smiled brightly as he reached out to shake her hand. "Dr. Hundini, first year intern!"
Carina forced a smile as she returned the handshake. It was a relief that it was a different intern, and that she could finally escape Ray. Although she didn't like to think ill of anyone, she would also admit that she was extremely grateful. "Let's go." She smiled softly as she led the way to resume the rest of her day.
After work, Carina was ready to relax and spend a quiet evening that didn't involve Ray. She didn't know what was going on. It was common for interns to try to get on her good side. But never like this. It made her feel uneasy; she couldn't explain it.
"Something light, Joe." Carina requested. While taking a seat at the bar, she pushed some hair out of her face. She turned around to look at the lights that illuminated the entire bar. Christmas was just a few weeks away and everyone was getting into the holiday spirit.
"Rough day?" Joe asked as he filled up a glass before setting it in front of her. She grabbed the glass and took a gulp before setting it down. She hadn't had a bad day, just a long one. Ray had still been following her around, even though he wasn't on her service. More times than she wanted to admit she saw him that day.
"Long, not rough." Carina grinned. She didn't frequent the bar very often; it was rare. But Maya was going to be at the station for a few more hours and she couldn't think of a better way to relax.
"Hey, Carina." Jo said as she took a seat next to the woman. "Haven't seen you here in a while." Carina sat her glass back down after having taken another drink before responding.
"Yeah, I don't come here very often." She smiled. "Maya's working for a bit longer so I decided to kill some time here."
"Alex is working late, too." Jo sighed as she glanced at the bartender. "Tequila, Joe." She smiled. From behind them, a loud commotion erupted. Both women looked towards the door as a group of people entered. "Looks like the interns are here." Jo observed.
Ray smiled back at her as she looked at the group, making eye contact. Her whole body shivered. "I, uh, I'm gonna get going." As she slammed down the rest of her drink, she paid the bartender then hurried out of the restaurant, leaving Jo confused by what just happened. There was nothing personal against Jo, but she didn't want to associate with Ray outside of the hospital. The work environment was enough for her.
Taking a detour to the store on her way home, she picked up some things for dinner. Whenever possible, she tried to cook for them both. She sat the bags on the counter before going to their room to change into a nightgown with her robe draped over it. A little while later, when Andrew came home, she was standing in the kitchen with a glass of wine in her hand, stirring the pan on the stove.
"Carina." Andrew sighed as he sat his bag down on the couch. "Put some damn clothes on. You're not the only one living here."
"Well, perhaps if you got your own place, you wouldn't have to see your sister in a perfectly respectable pajama set." Carina smirked as she sat her glass on the counter. "Andrea, you should get used to it if you plan on living here."
Andrew sighed, rolling his eyes. "I really need to find myself a place to live." He murmured before heading to his room. Carina rolled her eyes and laughed softly as she returned to her cooking.
"Are you hungry now? Or wait for Maya so we can all eat together?" Carina asked as Andrew came back into the room a minute later. "I'm fine either way." She smiled.
"Waiting for your wife means we'll never eat." Andrew teased, pausing briefly. "I'll eat now, and then you two can eat alone."
"You're always welcome to join us." Carina raised her eyebrows as Andrew served himself a plate. Andrew declined the offer before going back to his room. After dinner, she stored some in left-over containers before placing them in the fridge. In case someone got hungry later or they needed a quick meal soon, she always made extra.
"I'm finally home." Maya sighed as she walked through the door some time later. As she placed her stuff down, she smiled as she smelled the aroma of her wife's cooking. "Oh, it smells so good."
"Glad you're finally home." Carina smiled as she walked over, kissing Maya softly. "It's just us eating tonight because my brother wants to be incredibly stubborn and anti-social and decided to eat in his room before you got home."
"I heard that!" Andrew responded as he walked towards the restroom. "For your information, your wife could've been home next year for all we know. It would've meant we would never eat again." Carina glared at him as he smirked. After he had returned to his room, Maya carefully heated up a plate along with Carina before settling down at the table.
"How was your day? Besides the intern." Despite the fact that it wasn't funny at all, Maya's soft laugh reverberated across the room. In light of what had been happening, all she could do was support Carina in the best way possible. The only thing that made her happy was that Carina had been so open and honest with her throughout this entire process. It wasn't like she would ever doubt Carina's loyalty to her. Nevertheless, one of the things that Maya loved about her wife was the fact that she would go the extra mile just to make sure that there wasn't any doubt over the situation.
"Except for Ray, everything went well. Now if I could just get him to go away, everything would be fine." A smirk spread across Carina's face as she shoved another forkful of food into her mouth. "I'm probably gonna shower after dinner. I didn't have time this morning."
"You know, I could use one, too." Maya smirked. "We just have to be quiet since your brother's home." Carina smiled, glancing between the hallway and her wife.
"Who cares?" She asked. "We're all adults here. Besides, what's the fun of having a brother if you can't torture them once in a while." Carina smirked.
"The last time your brother heard us in the shower, he wasn't able to look at you for a week." Maya quipped, making them both laugh. Once dinner was done, Maya did the dishes as Carina went and started the shower before grabbing their stuff.
"The water feels good." Carina smiled as she slipped in behind Maya. Maya didn't say anything as she gently pushed her wife against the wall, brushing her fingers through her hair for a moment before slowly bringing her fingers down to trace her jawline.
"And you look breathtaking as usual." Maya purred, placing her lips against Carina's neck. The sounds of the water splashing around them would hopefully be enough to drown out everything else. The feeling of Maya's lips against her sent shockwaves throughout her entire body.
"Maya." Carina whispered her name, closing her eyes. She gasped as she felt the blonde's fingers inside of her, making her breath stop. As they enjoyed the feeling of each other, nothing else mattered and for now, Carina would take it.
