Author's note: I do know Nights is officially genderless, but because the English translation goes with male pronouns that's what I'm going to be using. Though it probably doesn't matter as much, please let me know if anything sounds off (I'm sure I'm going to screw up something with these two series)

A dejected sigh.

He had just wanted to say hello, but the strange small egg-headed creatures kept running away. They didn't seem like enemies; they hadn't tried attacking him. Yet anyway. Usually that meant they were friendly, but they kept running away and hiding. He was just a small pink puffball. He wasn't that scary. People typically called him cute…

The green valley he was in was at least reminiscent of his own home, though there was something off. He just figured it was due to being hot and hungry. Those weren't really pleasant things to begin with, so of course things would feel off.

Darkness drifted over the spot he sat. A frantic glance up.

A purple clad figure gracefully floated midair, dressed like a jester. The figure let out a light soft laugh. "Aren't you a strange one?" An elegant spin around, as if to examine him. "What even are you?"

He stood up and held out his stubby arms as he let out a cheerful shout, "Kirby!"

"Kirby." This got a friendly smile from the figure. Then the figure gave a nod down the weird empty valley. "Don't let the Nightopians get you down. They can be friendly…" The figure burst out laughing. "Though it probably helps not to chase them!"

Kirby let out a saddened moan. He hadn't really thought about it that way. A glance back up at the figure. He let out a confused murmur.

The figure landed. "That's rude of me…" He put a hand to his chest as he gave a deep bow. "I'm Nights." Nights straightened, a playful smile across his face. "It's very nice to meet you, Kirby."

Kirby gave a cheerful shout in agreement as he jumped.

Nights' smile widened. He took a moment to study Kirby again. "Do you like flying?"

This got a cheerful babble in reply before Kirby puffed out his cheeks. It was more floating than flying, and he couldn't sustain it for very long. Even less so than usual, with his stomach bothering him. Kirby let out a heavy breath falling back to the ground. He clutched at his round body with a pained moan.

The bright smile from only a moment ago was quickly replaced with wide-eyed worry. "What? What's wrong?"

Kirby let out another babble as he motioned to himself.

"Hungry?" Nights repeated as he tilted his head and crossed his arms. He then let out another laugh. "You are an odd one, aren't you?" Nights leapt up, back to deftly flying in the air. "I'm sure we could figure something out." He stared at the small ball creature for a moment. Then shot up through the air.

A light gasp as Kirby stared back in awe.

Nights did a beautiful loop through the air before drifting back to the pink puffball. He crossed his arms again. "What do you eat?"

Kirby rubbed one of his tiny arms against the side of his head as he let out a sigh. Then he held his arms up with a cheer.

"Well obviously, but what kind of food?"

This got a soft murmur.

"I… see." Nights made a gentle landing. He put a hand to his cheek as he stared at the small puffball. "It wouldn't hurt to try…"

Kirby let out a dazed hum.

He held out his hand. "We could Dualize."

A confused murmur.

"Wha-" Nights tilted his head. "No!" Nights fluttered his fingers. He held out his palm. "You can just touch my hand."

Kirby shook one of his stubby little arms. He jumped to touch Nights' hand.

A bright light flashed.

Nights blinked as he slowly tested his limbs. Nothing really felt all that different. "… Kirby?"

What… happened?

A small, soft voice in the back of his mind. Nights let out a sigh. "Good, it worked."

So that's why you don't need a sword to duel.

"Duelize," Nights corrected. "It's probably quite a bit different than whatever you're thinking of."

There was a cheerful laugh as one of Nights' own arms went up to rub the back of his head. Thankfully, Kirby had such an overwhelmingly optimistic demeanor that Nights couldn't help but smile as well. Otherwise he might have been a bit annoyed at the forced action, though he was used to it.

Yeah… you're probably right. So how does d-do… due…?

"Duelize," Nights provided again. He frowned. He didn't really like explaining things. It wasn't all that fun. "Honestly, it's something that's much easier to show than explain. Like did you notice how my arm went up when yours did?"

Nights' arms frantically waved through the air.

Yeah, that's weird!

He put a hand to his chest as soon as control was back to himself. Nights almost let out a laugh. It was hard to believe such a small creature could be so expressive, especially while apparently hungry. "It's because we're now in sync. We share control of each other."

So like being friends!

"I guess?" Nights blinked. "Do you… often control your friends?"

Well… no. But you share with friends, right?

"Right…"

So then we're friends now!

Perhaps it was just the infectious cheeriness or the creature's soft voice, but Nights couldn't help but smile. "Sure." He let out a light cough as he leapt into the air. "Anyway, I thought a search for food would go a lot easier if you're with me."

I hope we find lots!

Nights glided effortlessly through the air. He scanned the ground carefully, not that it seemed to be helping. There wasn't anything Kirby cared to eat anywhere, at least anywhere in sight.

A thought came to him. "Say, Kirby… where are you from, anyway?"

A cheerful giggle.

Dream Land!

Nights burst out laughing.

A sudden wave of confusion. The switch in emotion caused Nights to stop.

He took a deep breath. "Well, Nightopia is a dreamland."

No, Dream Land's on Popstar!

As Kirby's small soft voice stated this an image of a giant planet in the shape of a star flashed in Nights' mind.

"That's where you live? It's beautiful."

Yeah! And everyone there is great, too! Well… I mean, even Dedede isn't that bad… Though he does still hit me…

Nights rubbed at his own cheek as well.

Then again, Meta Knight's always telling me, 'you're too trusting.'

Kirby seemed to be trying to emulate a much deeper voice than his soft one could allow. He even tried to scowl, though for Nights it ended up as more of a cinched frown.

"Meta-?"

Everyone likes Meta Knight! He's an even better hero than I am sometimes!

Nights blinked. "You're a hero?"

That's what everyone says, anyway. Honestly, I'd rather just eat, sleep, and be around my friends.
