"Mr Deeks! Do you have a moment?" Hetty appeared at Deeks shoulder, making him jump as she so often did..
"Hetty, I always have time for you" Deeks wouldn't dare not make time for Hetty "What can I do for you?"
"I have a plane to catch so I don't have much time. Kensi asked me if I would supply a reference to assist your application to the Adoption Agency, I had to say no." Hetty sounded concerned.
"I understand" Deeks wondered what the problem was.
"I'm sure you do, but I want you to make sure Kensi understands. It's not you, it's me" Hetty smiled.
"It's just that my word would do more harm than good, not that I think you shouldn't be parents. Nobody deserves have children more than you two"
"We'll just have to wait and see, hope for the best" Deeks smiled ruefully.
"Kensi reminds me of myself at her age"
"How so?"
"Driven, wanting to save the world. Wanting a family. I envy her so much"
"Envy Kensi, why?" Deeks was even more confused.
"Because she has you Mr Deeks! She has a partner who wants a family with her. A partner who was patient enough to wait until she was ready. I've had a lot of partners in my time, we saved the world time and time again, then moved on. I've looked after lots of children too, it's was very rewarding but it wasn't a family life I gave them. I could never get away from this life, now neither can they"
"Do you have regrets?" Deeks spoke softly.
"No, regrets would be churlish. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat" Hetty shook herself. " I really have to go now. Make sure Kensi understands, nothing would make me happier than you two having a family. Remember there is life outside this life"
"I will. Be careful out there Hetty" Deeks spoke to an empty space. Hetty had gone.
"You too, Mr Deeks, you too" Hetty's voice echoed round the bullpen.
