Prompt XIX: Impossible

Yami hurried forward, wagging his tail as he spotted Yugi. Yugi's head snapped around, eyes widening, and he caught him as Yami hurled himself forward and sprang. They collapsed backwards into the straw and Yami licked his face vigorously. He was quivering, excited and almost panting with relief. He pricked his ears forward and licked him once more. Yugi ran his fingers over his scruff and across his ears, sighing and melting into him for a moment.

"You're back already?"

He licked his cheek and pressed his nose into his collarbone. Atem was afraid you'd come and kick his butt if I came any later.

Yugi snorted and grinned, eyes sparkling with warmth. "He damn well should be. I would have put my foot through his ass if he didn't bring you back sooner rather than later!"

Yami huffed against his throat and raised his head. Yugi looked slightly troubled but not in the manner of being truly upset. He just seemed mildly concerned, as if he were trying to understand why Atem had brought him back sooner instead of worrying about Yami himself. He relaxed against him again, exhaling and blinking at him. His eyes were warm and soft and molten as they met his.

He wondered if he ever looked at him like that. If he didn't, he needed to change that.

Yugi deserved to be looked at that more than anyone else.

He was the best.

Yami licked his nose and wagged his tail again. Atem said he plans to finish the hunters off tonight. He said this would probably be the last time we ever really got to see each other so he wanted to spend the day with me. He paused for a moment, then flattened his ears against his head. Thank you, by the way.

Yugi blinked, for a single second startled as if he had just cursed at him. It took him a moment to relax again, as if the words had truly shocked him. His fingers worked at his scruff again, lacing through his fur until his fingernails gently ran over his skin. He kicked his back leg with appreciation, tail wagging wildly with approval. Yugi grinned and rubbed his ears again playfully. "I'd give you the moon and the stars if I could. Letting you have time with Atem is a lot easier, though."

Yami laughed and wagged his tail until his entire body was shaking. He knew it had to have stressed Yugi out to let him leave like that, especially, knowing Atem was planning to attack the hunters. But he'd still let him go and the warmth that blossomed in his chest made his limbs feel almost boneless. Lupa and Fenrir, huh? You'd give me them if I asked?

"Give me a few days to figure it out and they're all yours."

Yami tilted his head, then licked his nose as he took a seat. I just want you.

He didn't care about deities, from Lupa as the face of the moon to Fenrir as the night sky. He didn't care for them in the slightest. He loved stories about them, but he didn't want them. He wanted Yugi. Yugi gave him warm feelings and soft grins and looked at him like he was the most precious thing in the world. He wanted to lick his face and snuggle and hold him and melt into him.

Yugi blinked, then smiled at him warmly. "You've always had that."

The wolf snorted and opened his mouth into a sloppy grin. I really have, haven't I? he said, wrinkling his nose slightly and closing his eyes halfway. You're the best. You know that, right?

Yugi snickered. "Didn't I tell you you're my number one?" He shifted slightly beneath him, moving to sit up beneath him and searching his face. There was something in it that Yami couldn't entirely read, but it made his insides warm all the same. He wanted to lick his face again. "You're my best friend. You make me want to be the best."

Yami blinked, studying him, then licked his nose again. He knew from stories that mates were always like that. They pushed each other to be better. They grew and evolved with each other. They kept stability when the other was breaking. It was give and take and always fluctuated where the other needed them.

He tilted his head and closed his eyes. He didn't really think that he did much for Yugi, in truth. Yugi had always helped him rather than the other way around. He always felt that Yugi was helping and doting on his needs rather than anything else. It always seemed Yami himself did not help him in any manner.

He opened his eyes again. Yami had needed him, almost using him as a crutch at times. He'd only been allowed into the pack because of him. He'd gone after him when Yami had run away to find Atem. He'd been with him, supporting him no matter what even when Yami was being a butt.

He shifted his weight and pressed his paw into his chest, touching the ribs where his heart rested. Yugi blinked at him and Yami enjoyed the way his heart rushed and danced beneath his paw. That warm feeling spread from his toes to his tail and his entire body trembled with approval.

"Yami?"

I'm just thinking about things, he mumbled, raising his eyes to his again and wagging his tail. His heart raced in his chest. He opened his mouth into a sloppy grin once move, tongue lolling as he looked down at him. You're my aibou.

Yugi blinked, then snorted. "Of course I'm your partner, dumb butt!"

I wanted to ask you—

They both froze at the sound of a gunshot, followed quickly by several more. Yami swallowed his words entirely and moved away to let Yugi get to his feet. The teen stood stiffly, blinking and listening for anything else, and finally looked over at Yami again.

"Stay here. I'm going to go see if Grandpa is back yet."
