Chapter Five: In Which Jack Knows the Way

Sandy returned to the library and reported to all of the Guardians that Jack was doing well and seemed to be getting better. He had been acting less and less disoriented from when he had first woken up, which meant that his head injury had to be improving.

"If Frostbite isn't actin' as wacko as before, then he might be perfectly fine when he wakes up," said Bunny.

"I'm happy that Jack's getting better," said Tooth brightly. "But I still think we should check on him again, just in case."

"Bunny will go and check Jack next," said North with a smile. "Is his turn anyway."

"I hope Frostbite doesn't do anything stupid while I'm watchin' him," muttered Bunny.

"I'm sure he won't," said Tooth, patting Bunny's shoulder lightly. "Besides, you did say that he's getting better."

"Who knows," said Bunny as he settled back into his chair. "He might wake up and start jumpin' off the walls."

"Jack will not do that," said North. He sat back down in his chair as well, picking up a toy train that he had been working on earlier. "You will be there to stop him, da?"

Bunny grumbled. "Sure…"

A little while later, the next hour arrived, meaning that Bunny was due to head over to Jack's room to see how he was doing. It was also around the same time that the yetis and elves wrapped up in the Workshop, so North stood up from his seat, preparing to head down and monitor the cleanup.

"I will be back soon," said North. "If argument doesn't break out between yetis and elves, that is."

Bunny, Tooth, and Sandy waved kindly, watching the Guardian of Wonder leave through the large, ornate doors of the library. Bunny glanced at the grandfather clock that sat tucked away in the corner.

"I guess it's my turn ta check on Frosty," he said.

Tooth nodded, her yellow feathers bobbing along with her head movements. "I hope that Jack's feeling better," she said. Sandy nodded in agreement, golden dreamsand swirling over his head in a lazy ring.

"I hope Frostbite's feelin' better too," agreed Bunny. "It's about time for him ta return ta his normal, irritatin' self."

Tooth and Sandy looked at each other, smiling lightly. Sure, Bunny claimed that Jack was annoying, but they both knew that he cared about him, even though he never showed it.

Shortly afterwards, Bunny left the library, heading toward the direction of the infirmary, where Jack was supposedly asleep. Or awake. Bunny didn't know just yet. As the Pooka walked through the halls, he thought back to when Jack had pranked him, which had started this whole delirious mess. Bunnymund really—really—wanted to get his revenge on Jack sooner than later, but at the same time, a sliver of guilt poked him. If he hadn't chased after the boy, Jack wouldn't have flown off so quickly. Bunny surprised himself with that feeling, and he quickly plucked it out and tossed it aside.

Naw, this is entirely Frostbite's fault, thought Bunny with a terse nod. If he hadn't pranked me in the first place, this wouldn't have happened.

Satisfied with that thought, Bunny continued to make his way to Jack's room in the infirmary, wondering how the winter spirit was going to act this time. While Bunny was hoping that Jack would wake up completely fine, he knew that he had to expect something other than normality knowing that Jack was delirious. First, he had impersonated Pitch (which Bunny found extremely hilarious but at the same time rather odd). Then, he had thought Tooth was his mother, and continuously asked Sandy questions that he didn't have the answers to. Bunny had always found Jack somewhat aggravating at times, but he knew that the winter spirit was that annoying little brother who needed to be looked after every once in a while (although Bunny would never admit that out loud).

Bunny hoped that Jack wouldn't act too odd or irritating when he arrived at the winter spirit's door. The Guardian of Hope pushed the door open, finding Jack sprawled out in bed, snoring lightly. Bunny smirked. For someone who always insisted that they weren't a child, Jack sure did sleep like one. Bunny walked up to Jack's bedside and adjusted the covers and placed Jack in a more comfortable position (although he looked quite comfortable the way he had been originally sleeping). Jack shifted and let out another soft snore, and Bunny sat down in a nearby chair, wondering what he was to do next. Jack was sleeping soundly, and he didn't seem like he was going to wake up soon, but Bunny decided to stay with him for a while, just in case he woke up.

But watching young winter spirits as they slept on wasn't very intriguing, so Bunny quickly found himself bored after a few minutes of sitting down, watching as Jack continued to rest. Since he was probably going to be sitting there for a while, Bunny decided that he could at least get a snack from the kitchen. Bunny stood up to leave, sending a quick glance at Jack to make sure that he really was fast asleep. Once he was sure that Jack wouldn't wake up for at least another few minutes, Bunny left Jack's bedroom and headed for the kitchen. While the Guardians of Childhood were immortal and didn't require as much food as mortals did, that didn't mean that they couldn't eat when they wanted to. And Bunny did enjoy a carrot or two every now and then.

Bunny entered the kitchen to find no yetis or elves in sight, which he was silently glad for knowing that the kitchen grew rather chaotic when the elves and yetis were cooking at the same time. But the sight of the empty cooking area was a little unfamiliar to Bunnymund, knowing that it was usually active and bustling with activity. Bunny walked over to the fridge and opened it, finding a bundle of orange carrots sitting on the third shelf. The Pooka smirked triumphantly, pulling out three carrots before leaving the kitchen.

As Bunny walked back to Jack's room, he bumped into North, who seemed to be on his way from the Workshop. The ex-Cossack was rather surprised to see Bunnymund away from Jack's room, and Bunny couldn't blame him. With the state that Jack was in, he knew that it would be best to have someone monitoring him in case he did anything crazy or something that he would regret doing in his delirium.

"Bunny? Is Jack doing alright?" asked North.

Bunny shrugged. "I left the kid sleeping."

"You left Jack on his own?" asked North in surprise. "No one is watching him?"

Bunny rolled his eyes. "Relax, mate. I just left ta grab some carrots. I'm heading back ta his room right now."

North nodded, stepping out of the way to make room for Bunny. "Tell us how Jack is doing once you give him medicine," he reminded the Pooka as he began to walk away. Bunny waved a paw over his head dismissively, but he had heard what North said.

Bunny chewed on a carrot as he made his way back to Jack's room. Once he arrived, he noticed that the door was slightly ajar. Bunny's ears twitched and he cocked his head; he was sure that he had closed the door when he had left. The Guardian of Hope shrugged, guessing that he might not have shut it all the way when he had closed it. Bunny pushed the door open and stepped inside, nearly dropping his carrot in shock when he noticed that Jack's bed…was empty. Jack was gone!

"Frostbite?" called Bunny. He looked around the room frantically, worry bubbling inside of him. "Jack?!"

There was no response, and Bunny hadn't expected one. Jack was nowhere to be seen, and there wasn't a trace of him throughout the room. The blue covers had been tossed off the bed, and Jack's staff was gone from the wall. Bunny shoved the rest of his carrot into his mouth and looked under the bed, in the closet, everywhere that Jack could hide, but the winter spirit wasn't there. Jack must have left the room when Bunny had left.

"Aw, strewth!" exclaimed Bunny. He shouldn't have left! What were the other Guardians going to say? Bunny bounded out of Jack's bedroom, searching the nearby area around Jack's room for any sign of the winter spirit. Unfortunately, Jack was nowhere to be found, and Bunny was just about to head to the Globe Room to look for Jack when he bumped into the other Guardians of Childhood.

"Hi, Bunny!" greeted Tooth cheerfully. "How's Jack?"

Bunny scratched the back of his head. "Ah…about Frostbite—" he started, but Tooth quickly cut him off with a wave of anxious questions.

"What happened to him? Did he hurt himself?!" asked Tooth in a rush, feathers bursting in all directions. "Did he hit his head again?!"

"Toothy, calm down," said North, laying a hand on Tooth's shoulder. "Jack is probably fine." The Guardian of Wonder turned to Bunny for confirmation. "Right, Bunny?"

"Yeah, Frosty's probably fine…" said Bunny. The Pooka shrugged awkwardly. "At least…I think he is."

North raised an eyebrow in suspicion. "What do you mean 'You think?'"

Knowing that he wouldn't be able to hide the truth from his friends any longer, Bunny ran a paw over his ears and sighed. "Frostbite's gone."

"What?!" exclaimed Tooth, her feathers popping out once again. An exclamation point burst over Sandy's golden head, and North's eyes widened in surprise.

"I left ta grab a snack from the kitchen, but when I came back, he was gone," explained Bunny.

Sandy put up the image of a snowflake, representing Jack, and several question marks flashed over his head. "Where's Jack?"

Bunny held his paws up. "I don't know, mate."

"We have to find Jack before he hurts himself," said North seriously. The Guardians nodded and they split up, each of them taking different areas of Santoff Claussen. Bunny looked around the Globe Room, Sandy searched through the infirmary, Tooth investigated from the air, and North looked through the Workshop, but there was no sign of Jack anywhere. Not a snowflake, gust of wind, or a familiar chill was seen or felt. The veteran Guardians regrouped in the Globe Room, each of them worried for Jack.

"Bunny, you should have stayed," said North as he placed his hands on his hips. "Carrots could have waited until later."

"I wanted something ta eat, mate!" said Bunny, defending himself. "Besides, Jack was sleeping when I left him. I thought he wouldn't have woken up so soon."

Dreamsand poofed over Sandy's head, forming the image of Bunny standing next to Jack's beside. "You still should've stayed."

"Oh, so it's my fault that Jackie's missin'?" said Bunny with an irritated flick of one of his ears.

North shrugged. "Pretty much." Bunny glared at the ex-Cossack.

Tooth had been silent throughout the entire conversation (a rather heated conversation, but still a conversation nonetheless), and she focused on searching for Jack. He couldn't have gone far, could he? With her bird-like eyes, Tooth suddenly spotted something flying amongst the high, lofted rafters above. Tooth recognized the blue hoodie that only belonged to one person and one person only.

"Uh, guys?" called Tooth.

"Jack is delirious, and he can easily hurt himself. If we do not find him, who knows what he will get himself into," said North.

"I know mate. Why do ya think I gave him the medicine, huh?" argued Bunny.

"Guys?" Tooth called again, a little louder than before.

"Then you should've stayed with him instead of leaving for carrots," stated North.

"I just wanted some bloody carrots!"

"GUYS!" shouted Tooth. The three male Guardians turned to the Queen of the Tooth Fairy Armies in slight confusion. Tooth was wearing an exasperated, but worried expression.

"What is it, Shelia? We're tryin' ta argue," asked Bunny.

"I found Jack!" Tooth exclaimed. She pointed up to the rafter above, and the other Guardians followed her gaze. Jack was walking on top of the rafters, a sight that each of the Guardians had seen multiple times before. They never worried for Jack when he was performing one of his balancing acts on top of the rafters, or simply spending time up there because he enjoyed it. The winter spirit possessed grace and agility that no other being could muster. And if Jack fell, the Wind was always there to catch him, but Jack falling was a rare, and almost impossible sight to see.

But that was when Jack was stable minded. At the moment, he was completely delirious, so the Guardians couldn't help but let worry grab them in a choke hold when they saw Jack walking across one of the rafters with a not very good amount of balance. The winter spirit had his hoodie tied around his waist for some strange reason, and a silver necklace wrapped around his neck. At the end of it was a round, silver charm that glittered like starlight. The Guardians had no idea when Jack had found the time to change or why he was wearing a necklace (for the winter spirit never wore any sort of jewelry). But what made the Guardians extremely concerned was that Jack was walking across the rafters from a high height, looking as if he could fall at any moment.

And what struck the Guardians most of all was that Jack was signing. Singing!

"AND THE CALL ISN'T OUT THERE AT ALL ITS INSIDE MEEEE!" sang Jack as he balanced his way across the rafters. The yetis and elves from below watched him in amusement. Well, at least Jack had an audience.

Jack grabbed a beam that sat a few feet away from him, swinging around it with his staff clutched in one hand. The winter spirit leaned out toward the edge, the Wind billowing behind him, sweeping up snowflakes and ruffling Jack's hair and sending his hoodie flapping dramatically. Jack's necklace dangled from his neck.

"IT'S LIKE THE TIDE ALWAYS FALLING AND RISINGGGGG!" Jack continued, singing loudly.

Tooth's feathers were twitching madly. "We have to get him down from there!" she exclaimed.

Bunny tilted his head with a small, amused chuckle. "Do we have ta? I mean, this is—"

North, Tooth, and Sandy sent Bunny looks. The Pooka raised his paws innocently.

"Fine, fine. But how are we—"

"I WILL CARRY YOU HERE IN MY HEART YOU'LL REMIND MEEEEE," sang Jack, cutting Bunny off entirely. The winter spirit stood dangerously on the edge of the rafter he was standing on. "COME WHAT MAYYYYYY I KNOW THE WAYYYY!"

"I think he's going to jump!" said Tooth anxiously. "What do we do?!" The other Guardians were too surprised to respond.

"I AM MOANAAAAAAAA!" yelled Jack. Then, he jumped.

Tooth gasped and thousands of exclamation points burst over Sandy's head. Even Bunny's spring green eyes widened in shock.

North was the only one of the group functioning. "Get ready to catch him!" he bellowed. The other Guardians snapped out of their daze and each positioned themselves, ready to catch the falling winter spirit until a gale swept into the room, carrying Jack into the center of the Globe Room. The Guardians silently thanked the Wind for her help, and Jack smoothened out his hoodie and swung his staff over his shoulder. The necklace thumped against his chest as he walked toward the veteran Guardians.

"What are you all doing here?" asked Jack nonchalantly, as if what had just happened never occurred.

"Oh, thank the Moon," breathed Tooth. She fluttered up to the winter spirits, eyes flashing with worry. "Jack, you're supposed to be in bed!"

"And who's Moana?" asked Bunny. The Guardians looked at Bunny and the Pooka scoffed. "What? It's an honest question!"

"I am Moana of Motunui," said Jack dramatically. The winter spirit looked around. "And I'm going to board my boat, sail across the sea, and restore the heart of Te Fiti."

"Te Fita what now?" said Bunny in bemusement. Jack ignored the Guardian of Hope and continued to look around the room, seemingly searching for something. The winter spirit's sapphire blue eyes landed on a chair, and he pointed his staff toward it.

"I found my boat!" said Jack. The winter spirit ran over to the armchair and picked up the pillow that was sitting on it. The Guardians stared, nonplussed. "Come on, Hei Hei. It's time to make our way across the ocean!" Jack placed the pillow next to him, and flipped his staff so the crook touched the ground, making rowing motions with it as if he was rowing a boat.

Bunny blinked. "And I thought Frostbite was gettin' better."

Tooth shook her head, a small sigh escaping her lips. "We need to get him back before he hurts himself."

The Guardians walked over to Jack, who was still rowing with his staff, and Tooth was the first to reach him.

"Jack, you need to get back in bed," said Tooth. "You need to rest."

"Wayfinders don't rest," responded Jack. "I need to save my island before I can lay down and relax."

Bunny shook his head in exasperation, and he was about to pull Jack off the chair when the winter spirit whacked him with his staff.

"OW!" exclaimed Bunny, rubbing his aching paw. "What the heck, mate!"

"Don't distract me while I'm wayfinding!" said Jack with a frown. Then, he continued to row.

Bunny growled as he massaged his sore paw. "How are we gonna get him ta bed without him assaulting us with his bloody staff?"

"I know how," said North. He walked up to Jack and ripped off the necklace around his neck. Jack squawked in surprise.

"Hey! That's my grandmother's!" the winter spirit exclaimed. He stepped off his chair and held out his hand. "Give it back!"

North shook his head. "Sorry, moy mal'chik. You need to get to bed." North then walked off with the necklace in hand and, as he expected, Jack chased after him. Bunny nodded.

"Solid plan, mate," the Pooka said. He, Tooth, and Sandy followed North and Jack as they headed in the direction of the infirmary.

"Give that back right now!" Jack demanded. "I need to restore the heart!"

North had no clue as to what Jack was talking about since a heart was inside a person's body and couldn't easily be removed…The ex-Cossack ignored the winter spirit, and he continued to blindly lead Jack back to his room. The Guardian of Fun didn't even notice.

While Jack was distracted, Bunny managed to grab him and carry him the rest of the way to his room. Bunny ignored Jack's shouts of protest (and the hundreds of times he kicked, pounded, and whacked him with his staff). The Guardians eventually arrived at Jack's room, and Bunny plunked the winter spirit into bed. Jack frowned and he pointed to the necklace North was holding.

"Give me my necklace right now!" Jack said. "That's the heart of Te Fiti! It's one of a kind and I need to bring it back!"

Bunny quickly grabbed the bottle of medicine, poured some onto the spoon, and shoved it into Jack's mouth. The winter spirit stopped talking, but he still allowed a noise of disgust to escape his lips. Jack shook his head, supposedly trying to get rid of the foul taste in his mouth.

"Sorry, mate. Byt yer gonna have ta wait to restore hearts some other day," Bunny told the winter spirit as his blue eyes began to droop. Jack yawned, and his eyes eventually slipped closed, sleeping peacefully as the Guardians stood near his bed, completely frazzled.

Tooth rubbed her arm. "Poor Jack," she said. Bunny snapped his head in her direction.

"'Poor Jack?!'" the Pooka exclaimed. Jack groaned from where he was lying, and Bunny winced, lowering his voice. "The kit nearly killed himself!" he hissed.

"But we did not let that happen, did we?" said North. Bunny frowned.

"Doesn't matter. Jack's causin' us more trouble delirious than when he's mentally stable," said Bunny.

Sandy produced the image of all of the Guardians standing in Jack's room, watching the winter spirit. "We should all stay with him in case he tries to get out of bed again."

Tooth nodded, sending a look in Bunny's direction. "Well, most of us will stay."

Bunny rolled his eyes. "I won't leave this time, Shelia. After what I just witnessed, I hope Frostbite sleeps for the rest of the day."

All of the Guardians pulled up a chair, sitting near Jack's bed, watching as the winter spirit breathed in and out.

Bunny sighed. "This is going ta be a long evening."

And the other Guardians nodded in agreement.
