Start of story:

A string of profanities rang through the polished, marbled walls of Olympus. The voice was murderous, promising a death worst than Tartarus. However, to a certain goddess currently residing in her palace, murder and contempt was not what she heard. While the hundreds of residents in this grand city may beg to differ, they did not understand the intricacies of the heart as well was her. For she was home. And home is where the heart resides, where we are the truest, where our hopes and wishes are. No… the voice she heard was filled to the brim with anguish, with hopelessness. The ironic thing was, today was supposed to be the voice's anniversary. It was supposed to be a grand event… yet it turned into a grand disaster. Her husband, the incorrigible cheater he was, was discovered(to the surprise of no one), to be engaged in an affair with yet another mortal woman. Though his wife had grown accustomed, almost desensitised to this, she still held on to hope. Hope that was irrevocably smashed today. She would never be the same cheery, upbeat and beautiful woman she was. Instead, she would spend her days plotting sinisterly on how to kill her bastard husband's child. She would be moody, temperamental and volatile. And all because she was foolish enough to fall in love.

Love was a complicated thing for Hestia. After all, she is the virgin goddess of the hearth. Many may try, including her, to differentiate between familial love and romantic love. However, this is all in vain. The arguments brought out were all superficial. After all, though love many present itself in different way, however the attachment we feel to our family is the same we feel to our lover. No, these arguments were nothing more than an attempt at denial. Hestia craved love. Not just the warmth of her family (though she never experienced much of that), she craved romantic love. She knows such a thought is ironic. After all, she is the first virgin goddess of Olympus, the one who inspired the man hating goddess Artemis to take her oath, the protector of woman. However, she is also the goddess of the hearth. But what is such a title even worth if she does not have a hearth of her own. Sure, she has a family in Olympus, but she does not feel at home there, not even by her hearth. Besides the occasional consultation she offers, she is always in the background, never stepping out, never spoken to. She was indeed the silent goddess.

Lying in her bed, Hestia let out a restrained laughs. Many myth depict her as being content with her current life. After all, unfaithfulness and cheating is often synonymous with Greek mythology. Hercules, Perseus and Agenor, were all great heroes who were born out of affairs. Heck, this was the main reason for her taking the oath of virginity in the first place. However, as she matured and traveled the world, she saw that amidst the darkness that obscured humanity, little bubbles of hope still existed. They existed within her hearth. The joyful reunion of a son, father, husband with their family after a particularly recasting war. The boisterous laughter of families during thanksgiving that often reverberates within her ears. This was what opened her eyes to the world. To the real world. Lovers may argue, they may fight, they may break up. But this doesn't make love any less worth it. The yearning, the calling we all have ever since we were young to find our other half is not leading us astray. Rather, it is guiding us towards our future, a better future. But the road there is often fraught with challenges, with hardships, with heartbreak. But without these lows, there will never be highs. Love does not make us sad or depressed, it does not hold us back. Instead it empowers us, it makes us laugh for seemingly no reason at all, it gives us hope.

Thinking about this, the briefest of smiles blossomed across Hestia's face. But as quickly as it appeared, it was gone. In it's place was a frown, complemented with a healthy dose of tears. It is too late for Hestia now. She made her oath centuries ago on the most sacred of rivers. She was not one to break her oath. No she wasn't like her brothers. No matter how much she wanted to, it simply wasn't her to do that. But this did not make the burden of loss any less painful. Though her daily ritual of aiding humans in their quest for love helped kept her emotions at bay, she realised that it is not enough. No it will never be enough. As she realised that, the gates keeping her tears in burst open, releasing a torrent of water out. As they gushed down her face, as she buried her face in her pillow, the hearth next to her bed began flickering. Embers stopped being emitted from the fire. The fire's warmth started to diminish. As Hestia fell asleep, a deluge of nightmares hit her, nightmares that would engulf her for years to come, nightmares that would trap her in her dreams, nightmares mocking her with what she can never have. That night, as the clock struck 12, the fire in the hearth lost their life. The light that kept has for so long kept Olympus, kept the world at peace and given everyone hope, died. There was no more illumination left in the world. For the first time, the world felt devoid of hope. For the first time, there was nothing holding back pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth from ravaging the world. There was nothing holding back the Dark Ages.
