hi, this is my first time writing sonic fanfic, reviews are appreciated! enjoy!
The night was rainy and thunder cracked mercilessly. The stairs creaked as Madison Wachowski stepped downstairs to the kitchen, careful not to wake her boys and husband. It had been a few months since they had found two more alien children, and they were all adjusting to living in a full house. The two new kids had seemingly set unspoken rules about sensitive things.
At first, Knuckles was iffy about sharing things about his past and affection of any kind, but had opened up a little more and was now all in for affection, but liked to hide it, as to not to seem vulnerable.
Miles, or Tails, as he insisted on being called, winced as if struck when the topic of gangs of teenagers or bullying came up. The kid clearly had some bad history with people, as he was very, very shy, and at first had refused at being anything but polite and silent, as though expected to leave within a few days.
Both had eventually realized they were to stay there, and within the time that they had lived there, had become comfortable with them, and Sonic was overjoyed to finally have friends like him.
She got a small glass of water and headed up to her shared room, but turned as she heard a small whimper coming from the attic that had been remodeled into a room.
Leaving the glass on the counter, she climbed the steps and opened the door. Looking around, she saw Sonic kicking in his sleep, as though running. Knuckles slept like a rock, but twitched as she entered the room. Thunder boomed and a muffled squeak was heard.
Looking around, she saw the bundle of blankets scrunched up on the small plane shaped bed. It shuffled, the identity of the figure betrayed by the flicking of a white tipped tail, though it quickly became buried beneath the blankets once again.
She sat on the edge of the bed, tapping the head of the figure.
"Hey there, sweetheart. Doing ok?"
There was a surprised jolt and the blankets fell off, revealing a small orange fox, two fluffy tails draped over him, one over his muzzle and one between his ears. Quickly, he shook them off.
"M-Maddie!" He had long since stopped calling her "Mrs. Wachowski", but the small voice he had once used returned. He hung his head guiltily.
"Did-did I wake you?"
"No, I went to get some water and I thought I heard something. Are you ok, honey?"
"Y-yes I'm fine! Nothing at all."
"Any reason for hiding under the blankets?"
"I, uh, I was cold."
Another clap of thunder came from outside and he winced, stifling a whimper.
"Miles.."
"Tails."
"Right, sorry. Baby, are you scared of the thunder?"
"No!"The exclamation burst out of him, a bit of a shock to Maddie.
"I'm ok. I'm just fine." He seemed to be trying to convince himself of that statement.
Maddie looked into his eyes, and saw a scared little boy trying so hard to be brave. She took his hand and asked gently,
"Do you want some water?"
He nodded and hand in hand, they walked downstairs together.
"Thank you." He whispered. "For the water, I mean."
"Of course, honey. Tails, is there something bothering you?"
Tails was one to wear his heart on his sleeve, trying to hide complex emotions was a fail for him. He sat on the living room couch, having silently moved from the kitchen to the place he was currently in. Maddie sat next to him, giving him space, but within comfort range. He leaned on her and whispered,
"I'm kinda scared of thunderstorms. Are you going to tell?"
Ah, so this is what he worried about. He just wanted his big brothers to be proud of him for not being afraid.
"Course not, sweetie! You know sonic and knuckles get scared too, right?"
The kit snuggled closer, big blue eyes peering at her inquisitively. "Really?"
"Really. Sonic's afraid of water, like lakes and the ocean!"
"But he's so brave! He went in the water to save knuckles from drowning, how can he be afraid of it?"
"Being brave doesn't mean not being scared. It just means having the courage to do the right thing."
He sat quietly, processing the information he had just been told. Maddie noticed his still scared expression, and decided to ask a little further.
"Is that all that's bothering you?"
Tails hesitated and Maddie stroked his fur gently.
"You don't have to tell if you don't want to.."
He had started to inch even closer, and at this point, she was holding him in her lap. And it was then that she noticed he was shaking.
"What's wrong, baby?"
"Maddie?" His voice shook, as if he were on the verge of tears.
"Why didn't my parents want me?"
To say that Maddie was shocked was an understatement. Her heart broke in two as the words reached her ears, and her eyes welled up with tears at the very thought of this sweet child being abandoned.
"Was it really just because of my tails? Was I too smart? Why…why wasn't I good enough for them?"
Tears streamed down the fox's little face and he kept talking, cutting her off from answering anything.
"I guess they were all right about me. Maybe I am just a little two tailed freak."
She sat straight up, and looked him directly in his eyes.
"Miles Prower, I never want to hear you say that again! You are a part of this family, and we all love you, tails and smarts aside. I don't know who your parents are or why they left you, but believe you me, if I ever meet them, I will put them through hell and back."
Tails giggled, a small broken noise that told Maddie he'd be alright.
"If…if you guys are my family…does that mean you and Tom are my mom and dad?" He whispered this, fearing rejection.
A big smile grew on her face and she answered carefully,
"If you want us to be."
At that moment, another boom crashed, this one the loudest.
"Mommy!" He whimpered, pressing tighter against Maddie.
She pet his bangs and whispered soothingly, "it's ok baby. I'm right here."
It felt so good..so safe and warm…tails' eyes got heavier and heavier until…
"Mom?" A half asleep voice came from the hallway. Maddie turned to see Sonic standing in the hallway, rubbing his eyes.
"Hey blueberry, what are you doing up?"
"Whats the matter with tails?" Sonic crawled next to her, and she shifted tails onto her shoulder so he could rest his head in her lap.
"Lady of pretzels, the fox is—" knuckles had come in, also half asleep, seemingly worried about the youngest's whereabouts. "..here, ok then. There appears to be something wrong, is he alright?"
"Just a bad dream."
Knuckles had taken a seat on the floor, hugging Maddie's leg like a pillow, sonic had his head in her lap, and she was carrying tails. All three had fallen asleep in their current positions.
"Mads? Doing ok there?" Tom appeared in the hallway frame, a smile on his face.
"I think so, yeah. Wanna help me out here?"
"Before I do…" he pulled out his phone and snapped a picture.
Eventually they managed to carry the boys upstairs.
"Mommy?" Tails had woken from the movement.
"Go back to sleep baby." Maddie looked up at Tom, who stared at her and mouthed, 'Mommy?'
They gently put them all in their respective beds, tucking them in. Dropping a kiss on their heads, they left their sleeping children in peace.
Ahh yes. it sucked, it was cringy, but…THE SNUGGLES WERE CUTE THO! Lol anyway, ty for reading!
