Summary: She was fearless. Or…- that was how she'd pretend to be, at least. Freedom bears no binds, and she refused to be a caged bird. She's transcended time and defied fate. A heart so unlike any other. Cautious and brave, all the same.

Pairing: Adaman/Kagome

Prologue

It was such a familiar feeling, standing at the well. Bluebell eyes gazed deep into the abyss. It was such a familiar sight to behold. This time, however, something about it felt so much more… imposing. She lifted a hand to rest it against her chest, and she flinched instinctively when she felt the faint pulse of the Shikon no Tama surge from within her body. It wasn't painful, but it certainly wasn't welcome to her, either.

Her expression softened as she reached to rest a hand on the aged, splintering wood. She couldn't help but wonder…- How did the well manage to survive five hundred years? How did it manage to look almost the same between the two eras? She sighed and shook her head, letting her eyes flutter closed as she stood there, letting the silence settle around her, along with the gentle breeze of the wind.

"I suppose it doesn't really matter," she mused softly, sighing as she let her hand fall away from the well.

The final battle had been a grueling fight, but it'd ended with things being righted. That was all that mattered, she knew, and now she must return back to her rightful time. She didn't belong here, and she knew that she never would. She couldn't stay, no matter how much she might want to on the inside. With the jewel back inside her body, there was no telling how fast she'd become a target again. Her time was the safest option for her and for the fate of the jewel. She knew that her friends would be better off, to say the least.

This was something that had to be done, and there was no changing that.

Her eyes opened as she took one last, long look around her. She forever memorized the sights that surrounded her- sights she might never get close to seeing ever again. As she did, she couldn't help but feel a wave of sadness upon coming to that realization.

She'd never been here again.

Faces she'd never see again, places she'd never see again…

It all coursed through her mind like a hurricane, and, without warning, a wave of tears crashed down on her. The field the well stood proudly in began to blur as stinging, hot tears cascaded down her cheeks in delicate rivers. She set a hand to her chest, fingers digging sharply into the white haori she wore. She bit her lip to try and smother down the urge she felt to vocalize her crying, and she eventually pushed it all back- letting all her emotions rest safely inside her.

She couldn't stray from this choice, she knew. It was final. It was for the best. Her heart may hurt now, but it was all worth it in the end if she could go on knowing she took the calamity along with her.

Kagome didn't spare another glance around her as she carefully climbed over the lip of the well, letting her legs hang off into the black pit awaiting her departure. She closed her eyes before she pushed off, letting her body vanish down the portal. That familiar, soothing blue light swelled up around her as it took her through one last time.

The final time.

000

She landed in a place unfamiliar to her, and she was instantly thrust into hyper-awareness. She climbed her way out of the well- the way she always did, and, for a moment, she assumed it hadn't worked. However… upon taking a better look, she realized that wasn't the case.

The scenery around the well was no longer the same. It was familiar yet unfamiliar all the same. She sat on the lip of the well, blinking curiously as she turned to look in every direction around her. Uncertainty filled her in waves, and she did the first thing that came to mind.

She dropped her body back down the well.

She landed on the dirty bottom with a wince when her ankle got twisted. That familiar blue aura never swelled up around her this time, and she could tell that the well hadn't activated that time. Sitting at the bottom of the well, she frowned, tightening her grip on her throbbing ankle.

Kagome sat there for a few minutes, blue eyes clouding over in unease.

Where was she this time? Why was she here? Why had the well not taken ber back to her rightful era?

So many questions pounded through her mind, but she couldn't find an answer to any single one. Her expression contorted into worry, and the hand that wasn't gripping her injured ankle lifted to burrow in the material of her haori.

Surely it wasn't because of the jewel, was it?

She glanced back up, her eyes meeting the sky that shone peacefully above her head. As she did, her frown deepened.

"I can't just sit here forever," she muttered to herself finally. Wasting time just sitting in the well like she was wouldn't do her any good. With a determined nod of her head, Kagome pushed herself back onto her feet, hissing softly when her injured ankle protested the movement. She ignored it and worked on hefting her body up out of the well.

With a fair bit of struggling, she finally made it, and she dropped her bag on the ground the first chance she got. She sat back down on the lip of the well, a soft sigh spilling from her lips.

"What am I supposed to do now?" she muttered to herself.

She sat there, wracking her brain for all possible options. As she did, she heard something approaching her. She jumped when it so suddenly appeared in front of her, sitting on the foliage that surrounded the well and looking up at her with a gentle, yet curious expression.

It was a creature she'd never seen before, and she was stunned. It didn't seem to regard her with any sort of hostility. It was quite the relieving swap from how her early days in these sorts of situations usually went over. Unable to help it, a gentle smile appeared on her face.

"Oh… well hello there," she commented softly.

It sat and observed her, its fur primarily a tan shade. A few tufts of green sprouted out at its legs, chest, and back, with a larger patch of green on the top of its head. Its four feet were all a light brown, and as were its eyes and nose. The ears and tail of this creature looked the most unusual, each appendage having the appearance of tattered leaves- the colors on them fading to that same green color that sprouted up at seemingly random, as well.

It tilted its head to the side at hearing her voice. It stood the following second, clearing the rest of the way towards her. Kagome sat up straighter, startled, as it nudged its nose against her injured ankle.

"Hey, what are you doing running off to this place?"

She jumped when an unfamiliar voice traveled over to where she sat. As she did, the creature merely glanced over its shoulder. Kagome followed its gaze, her eyes eventually landing on a figure unfamiliar to her. Silence followed as he seemed to catch sight of her just as quickly.

Her eyes met befuddled brown that watched her curiously. Hair that was spilt between deep blue and brown-ish blonde, pulled up in an off-centered ponytail- a lone lock of blue falling to frame the side of his face. He was dressed in primary shades of blue and black, with a golden necklace fixed around his neck with a blue gemstone fixed inside it.

She felt like a fish out of water, sitting before him. Sure, she probably looked a bit less suspicious due to clothing that had been given to her by Kaede, but still…- She could tell by looking at him, just as much as she could by feeling his aura, that he was surprised by her presence.

She scoured her brain for whatever type of explanation she could offer for her sudden and surely unexpected presence, but she was startled out of her thoughts when he started to approach her. She jumped and sprung up onto her feet in preparation for whatever may come her way, only to let out a hiss and drop to her knees when she put too much pressure on her injured ankle.

"Ugh…" she huffed. How stupid did she have to be to forget about it so quickly?

She sat there in silence for a few seconds, only to be surprised when he suddenly kneeled across from her.

"So, you're hurt, are you?" he asked, and Kagome couldn't do much else other than nod in confirmation. Even if she tried to lie, she knew it wouldn't do her any good. "Where did you come from?" he asked moments later, and she tensed up at the idea of having to actually answer that question.

Well, no better time than the present, right?

She sighed. "I… I came here through this well," she muttered quietly. He'd heard her, anyway, and she didn't have to be looking at him to account for the surprise that instantly washed over him.

"What…-?"

Kagome nodded. "I know it sounds really strange, but I'm telling the truth," she said. "I… It's a long story, but I'm not even sure where I am, let alone what time-period this is anymore…"

"Time-period…?" he repeated, and she merely nodded in response. "You mean to say you've come from a different one?" Again, she nodded.

"As I said," she sighed, "it's a long story…"

"I see," he said. Without much of a warning, Kagome let out a yelp when he abruptly curled one strong arm under her legs, letting the other brace her back, as she was cradled securely against a broad chest. The creature that'd found her first let out a joyous cry in answer to her started yelp.

"W-What are you…-!"

"What does it look like?" he asked, tone flat. "I'm not just gonna leave you out here on your own when you can't even walk properly," he stated as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. He shook his head. "Sitting here is just wasting time." Kagome was silent, cheeks flushed a dazzling pink as he started on his way. "On our way, why don't you tell me more of this supposedly long tale," he suggested.

Kagome squirmed in his arms, but he didn't allow his grip to go slack. "I-I don't even know who you are!" Sure, he didn't seem to have any ill intentions for her based on his aura, but that didn't mean much to her!

"You can call me Adaman," he stated, and Kagome huffed. "What's a name I can call you?"

She was quick to realize that she had no way out of this, and she gave up for the time being. "I… My name's Kagome," she eventually said. He nodded and she sighed softly. "As for my story, I guess I might as well start from the beginning…"

He smiled, seemingly pleased when she relented.
