Oh, my, god. It's been a while, hasn't it?
Well, if you're reading this, I might not interact much anymore, but I might be posting more.
-Lady Waffle
Two beasts stood at opposite ends of the street.
Lucia looked to her left and saw a kaiju with a bladed face of chitin and four arms, blue acid dripping from a glowing maw of a mouth. She looked to her right and saw 1800 tons of metal in a bipedal war machine.
She clutched Sinon a little bit tighter.
The two women were huddled in a tiny stone alcove, one of many cut into the wall of the Lenore Telecom Building, watching the two titans approach each other. Both women were terrified in that unique way that only comes from having to question if you'll survive the next ten minutes while having exactly zero control over the answer.
The kaiju roared, and it took Lucia a second to realize that not only was it screaming, she and Sinon were too.
The Jaeger's warhorn blared, and a salvo of rockets blasted the beast, who barely reacted. The kaiju began charging. The Jaeger began charging. The footsteps shook the ground. The kaiju angled its head down, like a boar spear attempting to stab a charging animal, and the Jaeger dodged right and landed a solid blow on the kaiju's chitin face with a metal fist, sending it into the wall, and followed up with a wrist-mounted blade that shot out like a pit viper and sliced the back of the beast's neck, sending acid blood flying. Blood landed perilously close to Lucia. She screamed again and pushed herself and Sinon away, wriggling like a worm.
Oh please God, she prayed, fighting hard to remember the prayers that she'd tried to forget ever since age twelve, oh please God, oh please God, oh please God, let us survive, let us survive, let us surviveā¦
The kaiju retaliated, swinging one arm at the Jaeger, who used another wrist-mounted blade to sever it with a quick, ergonomic slice that split through muscle at the titanic elbow of the creature. More acid blood sprayed out. The Jaeger shoved the beast against the wall, wrist blade opening a tiny chest wound. The building shook. Chunks of concrete and kaiju blood rained down. A crack spread across the alcove, splitting the keystone in half.
Oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God, please I don't want to die, I don't want to die, I don't want to die. Lucia's legs were jelly, heated butter, about as solid as a car underneath the foot of a kaiju. She couldn't stand, couldn't move, her arms wouldn't let go of Sinon. Oh God, oh please God, I don't want to die, please, God, let us survive, let us surviveā¦
The kaiju roared again, and an explosion cut it off as a rocket exploded against the chitin of its face. There was thunder as the Jaeger advanced and another mighty blow landed, cracking the chitin, before the Jaeger grabbed the kaiju by the neck and tore the weakened face-armor away before using it as a bludgeon, smashing the kaiju against the building, stunning it long enough to stab the bastard through the brain. It collapsed in a heap, lying across the side of the building, blocking Sinon and Lucia in their alcove.
The ground started shaking again, the tremors becoming rougher and harder with each step. "Oh, God," Lucia whispered. "Another one."
Sinon began softly crying. Lucia huddled closer to her, head on her shoulder. They were blocked in by the corpse of the kaiju. Who knew how long they took to decompose? Did they bleed as they decomposed?
All Lucia could do was pray and hug Sinon tighter as the ground shook like an earthquake.
Another roar outside. "Oh God," Sinon choked. Another barrage of explosions on the other side of the corpse set Lucia's ears ringing. The body blocking the alcove shifted, then was ripped upwards as the chitin of the head was used as a blade once again, dislodging a loosened piece of concrete from the arch of the alcove. A now-battered Jaeger backed into view, dropping to a knee to flip a kaiju over its head and stabbing the beast through the eye. Another kaiju, smaller this time, attempted to jump the kneeling metal machine.
Lucia wanted to look away as the Jaeger's arm shrieked. She wanted to close her eyes, but she kept watching as the kaiju locked its jaw on the elbow of the Jaeger. Metal tore as the elbow joint was wrenched in two before the Jaeger simply threw an elbow with the other arm that shook the kaiju to its core. It fell in a heap, crashing into the Lenore building once more, and the Jaeger slashed the beast's throat before stabbing it in the eye. It screamed in pain and thrashed as the Jaeger rotated the blades before it stopped twitching.
The victorious Jaeger yanked the blade free, showering the street with kaiju blue that melted through a few cars, and raised one bloody hand to the sky in victory.
