Chapter 3
Later that night, Harvey and I played a game of basketball with Mira and Anna. Isa sat on the patio with Juju.
"And here goes another three pointer!" Harvey shouted and tossed the ball into the hoop.
"That's not fair your legs are longer!" Mira stated.
"So! Me and Bry have been taking it easy on you girls. Why don't you step aside and let the real pros on the court huh?"
"Excuse me but I happen to be the captain of the girls basketball team!"
"Okay then. Take it out, Captain."
Harvey tossed the ball at Mira. Anna just rolled her eyes.
"Mira!" She shouted. Mira passed it to her. She dribbled it away from Harvey on defense and passed the ball back to Mira. Mira shot the ball and missed. Harvey got the rebound.
"C'mon Captain!" He teased and took the ball out to me. I put my hand out to keep Mira from snatching it.
"Bryan!" She whined. I just smirked and tossed it to Harvey. It was intercepted by Anna who passed it to Mira. Mira shot the ball making the basket.
"Ha!" She boasted.
"Lucky shot. Take it out Bry."
We played until the street lights came on, and the crickets came out. The girls beat us 23 to 19.
"Great game Mira! You're pretty quick on passing." Harvey told her.
"Thanks."
"And here comes Anna with a slam dunk!" I shouted excitedly. I bent down for her to get on my back. She laughed as she threw the ball into the hoop while riding piggy back.
"And Mira also gets a turn!" Harvey exclaimed.
"Don't even think about-"
She screamed as Harvey picked her up around the waist and spun her around. I laughed as I put Anna down. I then looked ovet at Isa. She was smiling and she waved shyly. I winked at her. Mom stepped outside wiping her hands off on a dish towel.
"Dinner!"
Isa went in behind her, followed by Juju with his tail wagging. I fed Juju his dinner once I got inside. We all ate at the table. We had mom's famous tater tot casserole. It was full of protein, veggies, and potatoes. She served a light salad and macaroni and cheese with it. She made it special for Harvey. It's one of his favorites. Being diabetic, anytime Harvey came over he got used to the low carb meals we ate. Though sometimes Dad and I got to enjoy a meal like this one. Harvey didn't eat dinner with us often, so it wasn't every night Dad and I could spoil ourselves. I loved mom's tater tot casserole too even though I couldn't eat a lot of it.
"So...another school year come and gone. What have you boys got planned for tomorrow?" Mom asked before sinking her folk into her salad.
"Sleeping in probably." Dad answered.
"I don't think so..." Mom replied back.
"Har...Bry and the girls do it every summer. Go to be late, wake up late. By the time school starts back you and I practically have to pry them from their beds."
"I get up Momma!" Anna retorted.
"Sometimes." Dad answered back.
"Well maybe Harvey can teach you kids a thing or two. Bet he goes to bed at a decent hour." Mom said and smiled at Harvey.
Harvey and I just smirked at each other. Later, Harvey and I were in my room playing a video game.
"It's bedtime boys. Lights out." Mom said as she entered my room.
"Aw come on mom, five more mintues."
"Oh alright...but no more than 10. Goodnight boys."
"Night Mrs. L."
"Night Mom."
After everyone went to bed; we stayed up until two in the morning. We played video games, watched a horror movie, and read comicbooks. We were going to listen to a few CD's Harvey brought, but we didn't want to wake anyone. Around two-thirty we got hungry and went to the kitchen for a snack.
"This has been the best day ever man."
"You mean was. It's morning, it's a new day already."
We just snickered and took out some chips, a few sodas, and the box of ice cream. We took it, and some bowls and spoons back to my room. My bedroom was a mess.
"My mom has never caught me staying up this late before." He said as he opened the ice cream.
"I've never stayed up this late before...maybe until midnight...but it's almost three."
"Yeah...you tired?"
"No...you?"
"Nah."
He filled our bowls with ice cream. We then crunched up our chips and put them in the ice cream. I think I get my strange eating habits from my Grampa. When I do eat foods I shouldn't anyway.
"Bry...are you gonna be okay with all this junk food?" Harvey asked with his mouthful.
"Yeah...it's okay." I responded back with my own mouth full. We later watched anime, then a show about these rich girls that lose their dad's money and have to rent a beach house. It was mostly bikini's and breasts. It made me miss Rosie, but I tried not to bring her up in conversation to Harvey. It was a little after three and we were both out. He was asleep on a small cot near my dresser. I had fallen asleep on my stomach with my face down in my pillow on my bed. Around three-thirty my blood sugar was spiking. I could feel it. I felt weak, and thirsty. I got up and went to the kitchen for some water. While I was there I got some grapes out of the fridge. They would help lower my sugar.
It was pretty quiet in the house. The sun wasn't up yet, but I could tell it'd be daylight soon. The birds were already singing. I yawned as I ate a few more grapes. I then heard the TV in the living room. Someone else was awake. They turned the volume up on the TV slightly. It was as if they were doing something they didn't want others to hear, but also didn't want to wake anyone. They entered our bathroom and I heard the door click shut. I left the kitchen and entered the hall. I then heard it. I was the only one to hear it. You couldn't have heard unless you were in the hall, because the TV was so loud. It was Isa. She was vomiting with morning sickness. I slowly entered the bathroom. She gagged and was trying her best to keep her retching quiet. I shut the door and pulled a ponytail holder from the sink drawer. I put her hair up and held onto it for her as she threw up again. I knew her throat must have been burning as her eyes were watering. I wet a rag with cold water and placed it to her forehead. She began to dry heave. Even though I was tired, I stayed with her until her sickness stopped. I held her until the moment passed.
