Scrape The Surface

These corridors were... uncomfortably familiar.

Koriand'r held her lit starbolt close to her body as she wandered through the derelict Gordanian ship. The other Titans were at her heels, following close behind her and Cyborg, who had his mounted shoulder-light out and beaming forward, slicing through the darkness with stark white.

The ship seemed abandoned but... Koriand'r couldn't help but hear echoes of guttural voices, exchanged words in a harsh language, bouncing off the walls.

She blinked hard, pausing momentarily and shaking her head. Whatever occupants had been on this vessel, they had long since abandoned it or perished. There was nothing to fear.

Still, as they proceeded through the bowels of the ship, she couldn't help but feel a crawling unease on her skin.

They descended another level and the feeling grew to a tingle.

They found the prison deck and now her breaths were shortening. The air down here seemed terribly thin, dank with a scent that crept into her nose and lungs and mind.

She faltered. Momentarily unnoticed as the others examined cells one by one, she stepped off to the side, quietly heaving for breath.

Her starbolt fizzled out, both hands clutching around her ears as the echoes grew too much and she was losing herself inside her own head, her skull echoing with clanking chains, sparking electrical prods, pain, pain

"Kory?"

The voice reached her somehow through all the other overwhelming sensory inputs, gently tugging. She felt a calm seeping into her, as if the haywire neurons in her brain were being shut off one by one. The feeling spread like cool liquid over her.

Her pulse slowed and she emerged from the fit with a deep inhale, her head clearing, eyes focusing. To her shoulder, hovering nearby, was Raven, violet eyes probing and concerned underneath her hood.

"You are not there," the empath told her, her voice still ringing with a trace of her powers. "You are safe."

Koriand'r nodded, pinching her eyes closed. "I know. I'm sorry, Raven, this place... it just..."

A pale hand found her shoulder. "Would you be more comfortable waiting outside?" she asked, without a hint of judgement.

Relieved, Koriand'r paid her a grateful look. "Yes, thank you. Thank you, Raven."

The empath nodded, stepping aside as the Tamaranian princess hurriedly made her way out of the bowels of the ship and into the blinking twilight.
