Ed vs Roark

The next morning at the Oreburgh City Pokemon Center, the Eds were in the cafeteria, having breakfast. Eddy was having an omelette with a glass of orange juice, Edd was having grapefruit and a glass of orange juice and Ed was having, you guessed it, buttered toast with a glass of milk.

"Well, gentlemen, today is the day of our gym battles with Roark." said Edd.

"So which of us will battle with him first?" asked Eddy.

"Ooh! Ooh! I want to battle first." said Ed, raising his hand and waving it.

"Very well, Ed, you may battle first. It will give Eddy and I an opportunity to see what Pokemon that Roark uses and what moves they know." said Edd.

"Okay." said Ed. They soon finished their breakfast and left the Pokemon Center. They soon arrived at the Oreburgh City gym.

"This is it, boys." said Eddy. "You ready for this, monobrow."

"Yes I am, Eddy." said Ed.

"Keep in mind, Ed, that we don't know how many Pokemon Roark has and you don't have much, so maybe after this gym battle, you should focus on capturing more Pokemon for your team." said Edd.

"Okay, Double-D." said Ed. With that, they enter the gym. They see a battle arena surrounded by rocks. They see Roark standing on one end of the arena.

"Hello, boys, glad you could show up. So which of you is going to battle me first?" asked Roark.

"Me." replied Ed.

"Very well. Your friends can wait over there while we have our battle." said Roark, motioning to bleachers outside the arena.

"Let's go, Eddy. Good luck, Ed." said Edd. He and Eddy walked over to the bleachers and sat down while Ed walked to his side of the arena. A man stood outside the arena.

"This is an official gym battle between Roark, the gym leader and Ed, the challenger. The battle will end when one trainer's Pokemon are unable to battle. Let the battle begin." said the man, who was the referee.

"You ready?" Roark asked Ed.

"Yep." replied Ed.

"Very well." said Roark, pulling out a pokeball. "Geodude, let's go." He throws a pokeball and releases a Geodude. Ed pulls a pokeball out of his pocket.

"Come on out, Turtwig." said Ed, throwing the pokeball and releasing Turtwig. "Turtwig, use Growth." Turtwig begins glowing green.

"Very good, Ed. Using Growth will make Turtwig's attacks even stronger." said Edd.

"Yes, but let's see what you think of this. Geodude, use Stealth Rock." said Roark. Geodude became surrounded by silver glitters, they grew large and Geodude launches them at Eds side of the arena, they flew into the ground and formed pointy rocks.

"Careful, Ed. Stealth Rock is an attack that causes harm to any Pokemon you summon out onto the field. Good thing Turtwig was already out there before Geodude used that attack." said Edd.

"Turtwig, Leafage." said Ed. Turtwig unleashed his Leafage attack and it strikes Geodude, which caused super effective damage due to Geodude being part rock-type, part ground-type, both which are weak against grass-type attacks. It was stronger than it originally was due to Growth.

"Geodude!" exclaimed Geodude as it fell to the arena floor with swirly eyes.

"Geodude is unable to battle. Turtwig is the winner." said the referee.

"Yay!" cheered Ed.

"Geodude, return." said Roark, returning Geodude to its pokeball. "You did well, my friend, now take a long rest." He puts Geodude's pokeball in his pocket and pulls out another pokeball. "You may have beaten Geodude, Ed, but let's see if you can handle Onix." He throws a pokeball and releases an Onix.

"Turtwig, use Withdraw." said Ed. Turtwig tucks his legs and head into his shell and he begins glowing blue.

"I think it was actually wise of Ed to use Withdraw. It will increase Turtwig's defense. I'm beginning to think this Pokemon experience is improving Eds mind." said Edd.

"Never thought I'd see the day." said Eddy.

"Onix. Use Rock Throw." said Roark. Onix slams its tail onto the arena floor, unleashing rocks and they fall on Turtwig. It didn't do much damage to him due to its increased defense.

"Twig." Turtwig grunted.

"Turtwig, use that Razor Leaf move." said Ed. Turtwig unleashed green leaves from the twig on his head and they strike Onix. Onix was also part rock, part ground like Geodude, causing super effective damage. Onix roared in pain and it falls on its back with swirly eyes.

"Onix is unable to battle. Turtwig is the winner." said the referee.

"Onix!" exclaimed Roark.

"You did good, Turtwig." said Ed.

"Twig." replied Turtwig. Roark returned Onix to its pokeball.

"Rest easy, Onix." said Roark. He pockets Onix's pokeball and pulls out another pokeball. "This is my last Pokemon, Ed. Let's see if you have what it takes to beat it. I choose you, Cranidos." He throws a pokeball and releases a gray, bipedal pokemon that had a blue dome on its head.

"What is that?" asked Edd. He pulls out the pokedex and points it at the pokemon.

"Cranidos, the Head Butt Pokemon. It was resurrected from an iron-ball-like fossil. It downs prey with its headbutts." said the pokedex.

"I can't believe I'm seeing a prehistoric Pokemon." said Edd. "I'm speechless. This is an astounding sight to behold, a scienticfic achievement beyond my imagination, I..." Eddy covers Edd's mouth.

"I thought you were speechless." said Eddy.

"Cranidos, use Headbutt." said Roark. Cranidos charges at Turtwig and rams it with its head.

"Twig!" exclaimed Turtwig as it skids back. Turtwig flinched.

"Careful, Ed. Headbutt sometimes causes a Pokemon it strikes to flinch, preventing it from attacking.

"Uh-oh." replied Ed.

"Use Headbutt again." said Roark. Cranidos headbutts Turtwig again.

"Turtwig!" Turtwig exclaimed. It flies back and tumbles across the ground. Turtwig struggled to get up, panting.

"I fear Turtwig can't take it anymore." said Edd. Turtwig was suddenly surrounded by a green glow.

"Hey. What's going on?" asked Eddy.

"That must be Turtwig's Overgrow ability." replied Edd. "Remember. It activates when Turtwig's stamina is low, so now Turtwig's grass-type attacks will be even stronger." Fortunately, Headbutt did not cause Turtwig to flinch.

"Turtwig. Use Razor Leaf!" said Ed. Turtwig unleashes another Razor Leaf at Cranidos, striking it, causing super effective damage due to it being a rock type and because of Growth and Overgrow, Razor Leaf was more powerful than it would originally be.

"CRANI!" exclaimed Cranidos as it falls to the ground. It struggled to get up, but it fainted.

"Cranidos!" said Roark.

"Cranidos is unable to battle. Turtwig wins. The winner of this gym battle is Ed." said the referee.

"YAAAAY!" cheered Ed, hopping up and down.

"You did it, Ed." said Edd.

"I'm proud of that big lug." said Eddy. Ed runs over to Turtwig.

"You were great, Turtwig." said Ed.

"Turtwig." said Turtwig. He suddenly froze and began to glow.

"Ed. Your Turtwig is evolving." said Edd. The glowing stopped and Turtwig was now bigger and he now had a yellow shell with two bush-like trees on it.

"Grotle!" exclaimed the newly evolved Turtwig. Edd pulls out the pokedex and points it at the evolved Turtwig.

"Grotle, the Grove Pokemon and the evolved form of Turtwig. Its shell is hardened soil. Some Pokemon come to peck the berries growing on the trees on its back." said the pokedex.

"Ed, your Turtwig is now a Grotle." said Edd.

"Cool." said Ed. He hugs Grotle and he nuzzles Ed. Roark returned Cranidos to its pokeball.

"You did good, Cranidos. You just rest now." said Roark. He walks over to Ed. "You trained your Turtwig, I mean, Grotle, well, Ed. This Coal Badge rightfully belongs to you." He gives Ed a badge that looked like a boulder and pokeball combined.

"Oh boy." said Ed, taking the badge. Roark also gives Ed pokedollars. Edd and Eddy walk over to Ed.

"Congratulation, Ed. Seven more badges and you'll be able to compete in the Sinnoh League." said Edd. Roark turns toward Edd and Eddy.

"So which of you two will be battling me next?" asked Roark.

"I volunteer." said Edd.

"Very well. As soon as my Pokemon are healed, we'll have our battle." said Roark.

"Very well. I shall use the time to prepare my Pokemon for our battle." said Edd.

"I'm looking forward to our battle." said Roark. Outside the gym, Ed puts his Coal Badge into his badge case and smiles at it.

"Does this make me an Urban Ranger?" asked Ed, referring to Rolf's scout troop back in the Cul-De-Sac.

"No way. We're Pokemon trainers now. So why would we be one of those losers?" replied Eddy. Ed has won his first badge, and soon, Edd will have his chance to earn one of his own.
