A comet falls on Kennett
So one last time
I need to be
The one
Who takes you home
One more time
I promise after that
I'll let you go
- One Last Time by Ariana Grande
I came up with this very quickly and thought it would be cute and somewhat sentimental. It was intended to be short and sweet based off the lyrics and video.
"Pull over right here," A sickening feeling crept into Bonnie's stomach as the radio news report revealed that bits and debris of the comet had landed nearby at Whitmore. Kol looked strangely calm as he locked into her gaze. She wondered why, because Mystic Falls was next on the comet's hit list, smaller meteors had already crashed to the grounds, injuring many.
"We have to keep moving," he insisted. He only slowed down due to the halt in traffic.
"It's too late,"
"That's not the Bonnie I remember talking. What happened to that risk it all for love and harmony hearted girl?"
Blinking back tears, she reached over and grabbed his hand. "I'm sorry, babe," she began. "I know you'd rather be over in-"
"Don't. Don't do this now, Bonnie. I'm here, and I'm not going anywhere," he gave her a soft, somber smile. The usual smirk was nowhere present and he had that serious look in his eyes, the look he used to give her when he'd tell her how much he loved her.
Her heart smiled, remembering the first time he uttered the phrase she'd missed over the last eight months. Two years ago tomorrow, actually if Mother Nature desired to grant them one more day together. In the apartment complex that was just to Bonnie's right. It was Elena's birthday and they had just watched the sun set when he held her from behind and leaned in close to her ear to spill his heart. For Bonnie it felt like it was fate that they were here again, being that the sun about to set on civilization and life as they knew it.
"Do you mean that?" She asked quietly when an impulse came over her. Kol knew that look of determination in her eyes all too well. He tightened his grip on her hand as she undid her seatbelt and reached for the door handle.
"Bonnie, no!"
She yanked her hand away and flung the door open, exiting the car. Kol immediately followed suit, exiting the vehicle as well and catching her as she raced to the sidewalk. He caught her shoulders and spun her around to face him.
"What are you doing? We have to get the hell out of here!"
"You said you weren't leaving, so just trust me!" Bonnie jerked out of his grip and looked up to the sky as a fiery streak flew overhead. The comet had reached their city.
Regret and remorse marred his features. The catastrophe was here and there'd be no leaving town. There was only one place to go with their fate being sealed. Bonnie was compelled to face the end with a strong heart as ever, she would not be consumed by the fear of the unknown. Maybe it was the fact that she knew Kol, whether or not he was where he wanted to be in his last moments, he wouldn't let her go out alone. He had loved her once and memories of that had haunted him since, just as they did Bonnie. Even though his heart belonged to another, by some miracle, she knew they were destined to be together until the very end.
"It's here," Eager eyes told Kol she was up to something. When Bonnie turned and ran towards Elena's old apartment building, he grabbed for her once again but she squirmed out of his hands and swore out loud, claiming she was doing what she needed to do.
Bonnie nearly tripped over an EMT who was checking the vitals of someone who has the side of their face charred with burns. It appeared that there was no life in the victim. People were dying left and right.
Kol wanted to believe that they had a fighting chance of survival if they could only flee to the next town and settle in underground bunkers as he chased Bonnie into the building and up the staircase. According to a current news report from an opened apartment on the second floor, the cities all around them were getting hit with smaller comets that were still causing significant damage. He discovered this when he found Bonnie paused by the doorway and there was a young family inside, transfixed by the news. Another streak of red flashed in the not so distant sky and the young mother rushed to close the front door, exchanging thoughtful glances with Bonnie.
"Why don't we just go home, let's return to your place, darling," Kol insisted.
She shook her head as she rushed toward the staircase again. "Home is where the heart is and my heart needs to see this through,"
"What?"
"The sun's about to go down. I wanna see it one last time," Bonnie sped up the stairs as quick as her legs would take her when suddenly a loud boom and a jolt of the building startled her as she reached the third floor. An unarmed security guard came rushing at Bonnie, nearly knocking her over.
"You can't go up there, ma'am. It isn't safe!" He attempted to guide her down by forcing her shoulders back. Bonnie twisted and turned away, shoving him to the side and kicking at him while Kol assisted, pulling the man down and shoving him away. Their collective efforts immediately caused a slip in his balance and he stumbled back. As soon as he released her she continued up the last step onto the third floor.
The security guard pulled himself up on the stair railing, turning towards the duo again. "Ma'am, please!"
Kol flipped back around and shoved him against the railing, throttling him before he pushed him back down to stumble down the stairs.
On the third floor, the smoke and scent of paint on fire began to cloud Bonnie's vision. She realized a sizey meteorite had crash landed in the apartment next to Elena's former one. The tenants that now occupied Elena's apartment were live streaming it, though they were losing channels quickly.
Bonnie surveyed the damage in a mix of awe and horror before she waved smoke out of her face and headed towards the stairs again. Dashing up the stairs, she didn't stop until she reached the roof level as an emergency alert blared all through Mystic Falls.
T minus two minutes until impact.
Fiery streaks continued decorating the sky, illuminating it instead of letting day fade into night. Tendrils of smoke rose up and added clouds to the horizon and most people were rushing about in their frenzied panic. Bonnie took note of some townsfolk who stood calmly on the sidewalks or on top of their cars, just watching the sky.
"Just look at this," she said with a soft sigh. The sadness, the pain of everything she was about to lose was setting in as the countdown indicated one more minute.
Kol hesitated by the door. "I've seen enough,"
"Would you just come here?" Bonnie pulled him towards the edge of the lookout point. Once glance told Bonnie he'd truly seen enough. "Look at me, babe," With gentle hands cupping his cheeks, she turned him to face her, before pulling his arms around her waist, knowing this was the last time she'd feel his embrace.
She kissed his lips softly for the last time.
"Kol," she said, then buried her face in his neck.
Thirty seconds left.
"Bonnie,"
No other words were needed. There was nothing more to say or do but accept their fate that kept them coming back to each other. No other love could compare to a love so true, so timeless that it followed them to the end of the world. Fate cemented their relationship on this rooftop and Bonnie felt it was fate that all would come to an end since they were no longer together in this life, it would transcend into the next one, since nothing compared to what she and Kol had. That's why he was here with her when it all came crashing down.
A bright streak flew by and landed mere miles away. The impact shook the earth all around them and created a shockwave that expanded at incredible speed. Nothing else mattered in that moment, only that Bonnie was in Kol's arms. One last time.
