Found Family
Petunia & Lily
Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter.
Petunia liked to pretend she was an only child. After all, she was perfectly normal with a perfectly normal family in a neighborhood where so many families were like hers. No one magical lived remotely near them, she would know as she spent her days spying on the neighbors while her husband worked and Dudley slept.
No one knew she had a younger sister she chose to ignore or that she was a witch and she preferred to keep it that way.
That changed when she opened the front door to discover her infant nephew sleeping on the front step; her heart dropped when she saw he was wrapped in Lily's blanket.
She swore mentally to herself when she realized she would have to arrange the funeral as James had no living relatives that she knew of to dump the responsibility on. She knew there was no getting out of it since she knew that Dumbledore guy would somehow know if she didn't do it and come scold her as he always somehow knew everything.
"Better get this over with," she grumbled to herself after she dropped Harry and Dudley off with the elderly Mrs. Figg the day of the funeral.
At least I'm normal unlike those weirdos you go to school with.
But Tuney!
Whatever, freak!
Shaking the thought out of her mind, the blonde listened to her husband ramble on about how magic couldn't even save the Potters.
"Guess that freaky school isn't all it's cracked up to be," Vernon was rambling while he waited for a stoplight to turn green.
"Guess not," Petunia halfheartedly agreed. She rested her forehead against the window, tuning out her husband's speech about being normal.
Petunia used to be a great older sister to Lily. She would help her parents out by playing with her while the Evans parents cooked or talked with their friends.
Lily wanted to be just like Petunia, copying her every move and mannerism. This would sometimes annoy the blonde but she knew it was because her younger sister loved her.
"Look what I made!" Lily declared, holding up a paper with two stick figures drawn on it. "It's me and Tuney!"
Petunia glanced at it, stifling a giggle when she saw Lily had drawn herself hair like she had been electrocuted. "It's nice, Lil," she said sincerely.
"Can we watch Fantasy Island?" The younger sister asked, her eyes lighting up like a Christmas tree.
"Of course." Petunia grabbed the remote while Lily grabbed blankets as they did every Saturday night.
Sadly, this dynamic changed when peculiar things started happening to Lily. Nothing bad but strange things like being able to make a flower open and close.
This enraged Petunia who also wanted to do cool things. She wanted to go to a magic school too!
The Evans parents praised Lily to the heavens, they were thrilled to have a witch as a daughter. All they talked about was Lily, making Petunia felt left in the dust and feel resentment that she was normal.
"You're a freak!" She hissed to Lily as the two stood on platform 9 3/4. She checked to make sure their parents didn't hear her. "Just accept it." With that, she flounced away.
Petunia blinked, her thoughts getting away from her. She stood over Lily's casket with a sour look on her face to keep up the façade she worked so hard to put on. After all,
Vernon was watching.
But so were other magical folks, including classmates of Lily and James's whose names Petunia couldn't even be bothered to remember. She and Vernon were the only non magical people here, muggles she heard them call the couple.
As she stared down at her younger sister, she made a decision she saw fit. "Sorry, Lil," she whispered sadly, gingerly touching one of her hands. "But don't worry, Harry will be normal if I can help it."
With that, she turned away. She would never tell anyone but she had Lily's blanket hidden away, all she had left of her sister.
A/N: Thanks for reading.
