Shortly after 2:45, Rachel decided to check on Olive to see if she had obeyed her parents' instructions and stopped watching TV to apologize to Maya. She saw her bedroom door was still closed and she could hear Olive laughing. Annoyed, Rachel hurried to the end of the hallway, ready to scold Olive. But she paused as she heard a second person laughing.
Slowly, Rachel opened the door. Sure enough, both Olive and Maya were on the bed, giggling at the TV. They both turned to look at Rachel.
"Sorry, Mom. I know it's after 2:45 but this is another good one!" Olive explained. "And I told Maya sorry like you said I should." Rachel turned to Maya, who nodded in confirmation.
"Well, thank you for apologizing," Rachel said. "And you girls can watch one more episode but I don't want you watching TV all day. After that let's do something else," Rachel was glad the girls appeared to be bonding (with no first aid kit necessary) but she also knew that Blaine and Kurt didn't send Maya to stay with the family only to watch TV the whole time.
"Okay," Olive replied. She turned back to the TV.
Rachel hurried downstairs to tell Jesse.
"Jesse!" she ran into the living room.
"What?" Jesse jumped and nearly spilled his wine.
"I went upstairs to see if Olive had stopped watching TV like we told her to apologize to Maya and she was still in our room watching."
"Oh," Jesse frowned. "What has gotten into her lately? She's been so -"
"Jesse, wait," Rachel interrupted. "She and Maya were watching together. And they were laughing and actually having fun."
Jesse raised an eyebrow. "They were?"
Rachel nodded. "Yes."
"That's…wonderful," Jesse got up and hugged his wife.
Later, when Olive was briefly alone with her parents, they tried to ask her about it.
"Did you have fun watching TV with Maya?" Jesse asked.
Olive gave him one of her infamous OSJ looks.
"I wasn't watching with her. I was watching next to her," Olive corrected.
Jesse sighed and shook his head. "Okay, well, either way - Mommy and I are so happy you two had fun together."
Olive shrugged. "I'm gonna go get a snack," and with that, she was gone.
Despite Olive's reluctance, the rest of the day went off without a hitch. Jesse took the girls to the park while Rachel took a nap. Then they all went out for dinner and to see a movie. When they returned, it was already time for showers and bedtime stories. Rachel read the girls a story from Olive's Disney Princess storybook and then it was lights out.
At about 2am, Maya woke up to Olive standing in her doorway.
"Maya? Are you awake?" Olive whispered, clutching her pink stuffed unicorn.
"Yes," Maya replied wearily. "What's going on?"
"I had a nightmare. Usually when that happens I go to sleep with my parents. I tried to wake them up but I couldn't - they were both snoring and everything," Olive sighed. "But I don't want to be in my room by myself - can I stay in here with you?"
"Sure," Maya moved over.
"Thanks," Olive climbed into bed and settled in.
"What's your unicorn's name?" Maya yawned.
"Uni," Olive replied. "I got her for my sixth birthday. At first I named her Horny, but Mommy and Daddy asked me if I had any other name ideas for her. I thought of Uni and they said I should go with that one. So I did."
"She's cute," Maya said.
"Thanks," Olive replied. It was quiet for a few minutes. Finally, Olive spoke.
"What's it like having two dads?" She asked Maya.
Maya paused for a moment. "It's pretty good," she smiled. "I mean, I don't know what it's like not to have two dads. But they're fun. I wouldn't trade them for anything - but sometimes I wish I had a mom. That's one of the reasons I like to visit here because Rachel is the closest thing I have to a mom."
"Oh," Olive said. She felt awful. She had already apologized to Maya for what she had said but she had never thought about it that way.
"Maya?" She said after another pause.
"Yes?"
"I'm really sorry," Olive said.
"Thank you but you already said sorry," Maya replied.
"I know, but that was mostly because my parents made me. I really do feel bad about what I said to you earlier, though. And about…everything else."
"I'm sorry, too," Maya said. "I know I've been really mean to you sometimes as well."
"That's okay," Olive said.
At some point shortly thereafter, the pair fell asleep. The next morning when Rachel went to check on Olive, she was alarmed to find Olive's bed empty. She then went to Maya's room and gasped at what she found. Jesse happened to be coming out of the couple's bedroom and quickly went to his wife's side, thinking something was terribly wrong. But it wasn't. Because Olive St. James and Maya Hummel-Anderson had fallen asleep in Maya's bed with their arms wrapped around each other.
Through teary eyes, Rachel snapped a picture on her phone which she then texted to Blaine and Kurt with the caption "so this happened."
Yes.
Just like sisters.
